Rome (AFP) – Promoted Salernitana remain in danger of being thrown out of Serie A after failing to find a buyer two weeks before a deadline set by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), the club said Thursday.

According to FIGC rules, two clubs under the same ownership cannot play in the same division. The club based in Salerno, south of Naples, is co-owned by Lazio boss Claudio Lotito.

The independent directors appointed in June to organise the club’s sale by December 31 have confirmed the absence of good bids and requested a new deadline.

“To date, none of the offers received for the acquisition of Salernitana are acceptable,” the administrators said.

The club has the support of other teams in the division.

Meeting Thursday in a general assembly at the League, Serie A clubs unanimously voted for a postponement of the deadline until the end of the season.

The request will be submitted to the FIGC Federal Council next Tuesday where the future of Salernitana is on the agenda.

“I no longer have power within the club, I am outside of Salernitana,” insisted Lotito, quoted by the Italian agency Ansa.

Salernitana finished second in Serie B last season.

They are competing for the third time in the Italian top flight and first since 1998-1999.

The club are last in the league, with two wins in 17 games, despite summer signings including French star Franck Ribery.

Salerno major Vincenzo Napoli said he was ready to “support and accompany” any initiative “to ensure that Salernitana continue the championship and can strengthen their squad to defend on the field the Serie A conquered with merit”.
