Bayern Munich revealed on Sunday that director of sport Matthias Sammer has missed their last two games on the bench alongside coach Pep Guardiola after suffering from a brain disorder.

The 48-year-old is suffering from “a tiny circulatory disorder of the brain that will heal completely and without consequence”, according to club doctor Prof. Dr. Roland Schmidt, Bayern said in a statement.

Sammer was missing for their 2-0 win at home to Werder Bremen last Tuesday in the semi-final of the German Cup and Saturday’s 2-0 league win at Hertha Berlin.

But the former Germany international says he is on the road to recovery.

“There is nothing I’m not allowed to do and the doctors have assured me that I will be completely cured and fully restored,” Sammer said in the statement.

“But I will give myself the necessary time to regenerate, so as to represent the team and Bayern again with full force.”

It is unclear whether Sammer can attend Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final, first-leg, at Atletico Madrid as Bayern chase a repeat of their 2013 treble.

He is also set to miss next Saturday’s German league match at home to Borussia Moenchengladbach, when a victory will confirm a record fourth straight Bundesliga title.

“The most important thing now is that Matthias Sammer recovers fully,” said Bayern’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

“Matthias knows that we will give him all the time he needs to get his old strength back to pursue his duties at Bayern.”
