Lazio have confirmed that Feyenoord defender Stefan De Vrij will undergo a medical tomorrow morning before completing a move to the Serie A club. The Italian side’s director of communications, Stefano De Martino, made the announcement on Lazio Style Radio earlier this evening.

“Stefan De Vrij will arrive tonight at Fiumicino airport and tomorrow morning at 8am will undergo his medical at the Paideia clinic,” De Martino stated.

“We welcome with joy the best defender at the World Cup. He is an international-level signing.”

The 22-year-old centre-back was a key member of Louis van Gaal’s Dutch squad this summer and speculation was the Netherlands boss was keen on bringing the player with him to Old Trafford.

But Lazio are a few hours away from completing a £7.5 million move for the defender.

De Vrij has made nineteen appearances since being called up to the Dutch senior squad in 2012. He was named a member of FIFA’s World Cup All-Star Team this summer in Brazil.

He has spent his entire club career at Feyenoord where he was converted from a midfielding prospect into one of the better young defenders in world football.

In five seasons with the Eredivisie side, De Vrij made 135 appearances in all competitions; scoring seven goals.
