
<p>US private equity groups are allegedly considering acquiring the Women’s Super League in preparation for the league’s rebirth in season 2024-25.</p>



<p>The WSL is at a turning point just as interest in women’s soccer is at an all-time high. Once this season concludes, the Football Association (FA) said it will no longer oversee either of England’s top two competitions, the Championship or the Premier League.</p>



<p>Since the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-super-league-tv-schedule/">WSL</a> was established in the summer of 2011, the English women’s game is undergoing its most significant transformation in the next year. Thus, in order to accommodate more teams, the FA is planning to revive the Women’s Super League for the next season. To get this idea off the ground, however, they need $30 million.</p>



<h2>US investment group eyes 10-year stake in Women’s Super League</h2>



<p>The FA conducted a study to determine the best course of action for the development of women’s soccer. It suggests the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/watch-premier-league-on-us-tv-internet/">Premier League</a> seizes the reins. Only around half of the clubs are on board with this idea, and several of them have women’s teams that play in leagues much below the top division.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-12625155/AHEAD-GAME-American-investors-want-buy-Womens-Super-League-Premier-League-clubs-refusing-provide-25m-start-costs-seasons-planned-relaunch.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Daily Mail</a> reports American private equity groups have interest in purchasing a 10-year stake in the league. They identify enormous expansion potential for the league. Interest in women’s soccer has increased after England’s campaigns at the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/uefa-european-championship-tv-schedule/">European Championship</a> and the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-world-cup-tv-schedule/">World Cup</a>. England won Euro 2022 and reached the Final of the next summer’s Women’s World Cup.</p>



<p>The existing TV agreement for the WSL expires in the summer. Therefore, the FA has until December to obtain the financing. Now the FA is hunting for an agreement that pleases all involved parties.</p>



<h5>What is EPL’s and clubs’ stance?</h5>



<p>Premier League teams would become the WSL’s proprietors under the FA’s plan. The FA retains veto power over major decisions.</p>



<p>Clubs in the Premier League are divided about if and when a takeover should occur. They also debate who should pay and what any amount needs to be. There are half as many women’s Premier League teams as there are men’s. More teams play in the lower divisions. </p>

US investors eye WSL amid EPL refusal of $30m relaunch costs

The FA is looking for ways to capitalize on the Women's Super League, and a US investment group may be there to bridge a gap.


<p>Financial conflicts between Premier League teams and a relaunch of the Women’s Super League next year might derail the initiative.</p>



<p>According to the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-12518863/Womens-Super-League-relaunch-2024-THREAT-Premier-League-teams-odds-FAs-25m-funding-plan.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Daily Mail</a>, the FA requested $31 million from <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> teams. This can establish a new, more competitive league for the next 2024-25 season. So far, consensus has not been reached.</p>



<p>The FA’s plans capitalize on England’s Lionesses’ recent success. The relaunch of the women’s league comes at the same time as the next WSL TV agreement. After winning the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/uefa-european-championship-tv-schedule/">2022 Euro</a> last year, England <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/england-reach-womens-world-cup-final-to-face-spain-20230816-WST-450422.html">reached the Women’s World Cup Final</a> this summer. The success created a frenzy and buzz around women’s soccer in England.</p>



<h5>English FA would have veto power</h5>



<p>A ‘significant minority’ of Premier League teams back the FA’s plan. But insiders have told Daily Mail that the clubs will not have enough votes to make the changes (14 are needed). The report goes on to suggest that the FA is worried that they will not have enough time to finish the relaunch by next year.</p>



<p>As a result, they have set a deadline of December to get the necessary cash. To implement their plan, the Premier League teams would acquire the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-super-league-tv-schedule/">Women’s Super League (WSL)</a>. On the other hand, the FA would retain a “golden share” that would give them veto power over major decisions.</p>

<h2>Premier League clubs debating for each share of Super League</h2>



<p>The Premier League’s pursuit of a WSL takeover continues. But, the clubs are said to be divided on whether or not now is the correct moment to officially present the bids.</p>



<p>According to the FA’s plan, the Premier League would be responsible for covering the first investment. While there is widespread dispute among the clubs on whether or not they should all pay and how much they should each put in.</p>



<p>It seems unlikely that the teams will be divided along the same lines as the classic “Big Six” and “other 14” groups. To add more complexity, just half of the EPL’s sides are represented in the WSL, and several of those teams play in lower divisions.</p>

Premier League to run Women’s Super League from 2024

Among Premier League clubs, there has recently been heated disagreement about the appropriate strategy for funding the Women's Super League.


<p>For the first time, Manchester United will host Manchester City in a <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-super-league-tv-schedule/">Women’s Super League</a> (WSL) Manchester Derby fixture at Old Trafford this season. The match is set the be the first time the two teams face off at the historic arena in the history of their women’s clubs. The game will take place on November 19th. Along with the match at Old Trafford, City will then host the return fixture at Etihad Stadium in the spring.</p>



<p>The Red Devils previously played two WSL matches at Old Trafford last season. United previously set a team record for most fans during its December matchup with Aston Villa. United won the game 5-0 in front of 30,196 fans. Then, United hosted West Ham at the stadium in March.</p>



<p>The two WSL Manchester Derby fixtures are bound to attract many fans, as the two teams attracted a record-setting audience of 44,259 at the Etihad Stadium. You can only imagine the numbers a match at Old Trafford would pull.</p>



<h2>United head coach ready for opportunity</h2>



<p>“These fixtures represent one of the biggest rivalries in world football and it is fitting that both games will take place in stadiums that provide more fans with the opportunity to attend and support us,” <a href="https://www.manutd.com/en/news/detail/man-utd-and-man-city-to-play-each-other-at-old-trafford-and-etihad-stadium-in-2023-24-wsl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proclaimed</a> Manchester United women’s team head coach Marc Skinner.</p>

<p>“As a squad, we have shown that we can perform on the big stage – winning all our previous games at Old Trafford and competing so strongly in the FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley in May. And now, of course, many of our players are involved in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-world-cup-tv-schedule/">FIFA Women’s World Cup</a>.”</p>



<h5>WSL attendance records keep increasing as women’s soccer grows</h5>



<p>Skinner also spoke on how the women’s game is growing rapidly inside England. WSL attendance records have been broken multiple times in recent years. Arsenal currently holds the league’s record for fan attendance after it broke its own record last season. The Gunners hosted bitter rivals Tottenham in September at the Emirates Stadium in front of over 47,000 supporters. </p>



<p>“Women’s football is again capturing the nation and playing these matches at grounds like Old Trafford and the Etihad can only add to the ever-increasing profile of the club, the WSL and the women’s game in general,” continued Skinner.</p>



<p>The Manchester United women’s team first began playing at Old Trafford in 2021. However, the COVID pandemic forced fans to stay away from the arena at the time. The upcoming move for the rivalry match will surely help draw more of a crowd for the game. Last season’s WSL Manchester Derby between United and City drew around 7,000 fans at Leigh Sports Village.</p>

Old Trafford to host WSL Manchester derby for first time


<p>The Women’s Super League documented its most successful season ever. However, this was before the Euro 2022 win from the England Women’s side. No, this relates to record revenue for the league in the 2021/22 campaign. </p>



<p>BBC Sport reports club revenues grew 60% in the 2021/22 season compared to 2020/21. Combined, revenues grew to over $40 million. By comparison, the club revenue in the 2020/21 season was $25 million. Also, wages across the league climbed 37%. </p>



<p>Attribution for this financial bump is largely going to the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/56459754" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">landmark deal</a> signed between BBC and the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-super-league-tv-schedule/">Women’s Super League</a>. Ahead of the 2021/22 season, the BBC announced that its channels would broadcast 22 live matches. Then, Sky would air a further 44 games across the Main Event, Premier League and Sky Sports Football channels. Also, increased <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/59661941" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">investment from Barclays</a>, the league’s title sponsor, helped drive up revenues.</p>



<p>It is important to note that matchday revenue had less of a role than one may think. Tickets, concessions and merchandise did not benefit from the Euro 2022 competition in England. Matchday revenues were just 10% of the clubs’ revenues in 2021/22. However, since the massively successful Euro 2022, attendance at games <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/63913485">increased by over 200%</a>. </p>



<h2>Women’s Super League is successful on multiple fronts</h2>



<p>Part of the league’s growth in revenue did come from the competitive growth of the league. In the 2021/22 season, Chelsea won. It was the fifth title for manager Emma Hayes and the third in the last three seasons. However, the league was competitive. Arsenal Women made a serious push for the title.</p>



<p>That excitement surely grew the interest in the league, which contributed to the growing revenue. The success of last summer’s Women’s Euro will do even more. England, which won the competition at Wembley in front of over 87,000 fans.</p>

<p>Chelsea FC Women won yet another <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-super-league-tv-schedule/">Women’s Super League</a> title on Saturday. The record champions have now won four-straight English top-flight titles to make it six out of the last seven seasons. A 3-0 win against Reading did enough to maintain a two-point gap over Manchester United, which also won at Liverpool on Saturday. </p>



<p>For both United and Chelsea, the 2022/23 season was a massive success. The Women’s Super League is just a 22-game campaign. Chelsea dropped points just three times to secure 58 out of a possible 66 points. For reference, if a men’s team in the Premier League were to have a similar ratio of success, it would collect over 100 points. </p>



<p>By that measure, this Chelsea side is equal to that of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. That club is in contention to be one of the greatest Premier League teams ever. For Chelsea Women, there is no dispute that it is England’s greatest women’s team. It is a massive credit to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/chelsea-should-look-toward-emma-hayes-as-next-manager-20230505-WST-431743.html">Emma Hayes</a>, one of the best coaches in the sport.</p>



<h5>A comfortable win at Reading</h5>



<p>Saturday’s win came from some of the biggest names in <a href="https://twitter.com/SkySportsWSL/status/1662497854173192199" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chelsea’s ‘greatest’ team</a>. Sam Kerr, for example, scored twice in the 3-0 triumph at Reading. She contributed the first of the Blues’ two first-half goals with a thunderous header.</p>

<p>Then, after <a href="https://twitter.com/AttackingThird/status/1662463580275605506" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Guro grabbed Chelsea’s second</a> in the game, Kerr wrapped up a perfect day for Chelsea supporters. The 88th-minute goal was Kerr’s 12th of the campaign, which is <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/womens-super-league/top-scorers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">third-best in the league</a>. Since arriving in London, Kerr has played 103 games for Chelsea. She has 83 goals and 10 trophies. Not a bad return for the Australian in the slightest. </p>



<h2>Chelsea dominant in the Women’s Super League with another title</h2>



<p>Emma Hayes has had an immeasurable impact on Chelsea women. Before her arrival, Chelsea’s biggest accomplishments were all in the second tier. However, since coming over in 2012, Chelsea has won 13 major trophies in 10 years. There were other chances to make that trophy count even higher. Two runner-up finishes in the league, a second in the Women’s FA Cup and a pair of silver medals in the Women’s League Cup transpired. Brutally, Chelsea missed out on European silverware in 2021, losing to Barcelona in the Women’s Champions League Final.</p>

<p>However, a sixth Women’s Super League title in seven years is nothing short of remarkable. It is a period of dominance from Chelsea in the women’s game, and Emma Hayes is at the core of that.</p>

Chelsea claims fourth-straight Women's Super League title


<p>England’s WSL – <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-super-league-tv-schedule/">Women’s Super League</a> – has risen to become one of the top women’s competitions in the world.  With big-name clubs, and an ever-improving roster of players, the WSL continues to evolve. The 2022/23 season has seen two English sides, Arsenal and Chelsea, reach the semifinals of the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-champions-league-tv-schedule/">UEFA Women’s Champions League</a>.</p>



<p>The WSL, a successor to the FA Women’s Premier League National Division, kicked off in 2011. Since then, it has grown, from the eight original clubs to twelve from 2019 onwards. From 2018, the league has been fully professional. The year 2013 saw the introduction of promotion and relegation with the WSL 2 (now known as the FA Women’s Championship). And in 2017, the league moved to the traditional Fall-Spring calendar. As the structure has shaped up and come into focus, the quality has as well. </p>



<h4>Moving in the opposite direction?</h4>



<p>Women’s soccer in England has made strides in working to recreate the wildly successful men’s pyramid, but is the WSL still headed on the right path moving forward? <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/daniel-levy-wants-to-scrap-pro-rel-from-womens-super-league-20230425-WST-429972.html">Recent reports</a> have key league figures debating the idea of scrapping relegation. Perhaps not coincidentally, one proponent is Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy. The Spurs women’s side currently find themselves in a battle to avoid relegation. Chelsea manager Emma Hayes, who coached the Chicago Red Stars in WPS from 2008-2010, has also floated the idea. Chelsea are six-time WSL champions, have a shot at a seventh (and fourth in a row) this spring, and would seem to be unlikely candidates for relegation anytime soon.</p>



<p>Not everyone is pleased with the potential closing-up of the top tier, however. Maggie Murphy, chief exec of Lewes FC (who play in the Championship), is <a href="https://www.sportspromedia.com/news/wsl-promotion-relegation-closed-league-lewes-ceo-daniel-levy/?zephr_sso_ott=x14YQP" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quoted</a> as saying “We’re basically deciding [by closing off the competition] that English club football in this country is going to contract into a very small number of spaces.” Two thirds of the clubs currently in the WSL are based in either London, Manchester, or Birmingham. And most clubs in the top two women’s tiers are affiliated with a men’s Premier League or Championship side.</p>



<p>Levy’s theory is that clubs would invest more in their women’s sides if there was no threat of relegation. But the opposing view is that it would severely hurt investment in the women’s game overall. There would be little incentive to invest and improve clubs outside the top tier if there is no chance at promotion. </p>

<h4>Inspiration from the US?</h4>



<p>An impending separation between the Football Association and the WSL is on the horizon. As the league becomes an independent entity, anything is possible. </p>



<p>It could continue on the path it has forged so far. Building out the pyramid, and working together with the entirety of the English women’s soccer ecosystem. Or the current elite could close themselves off, becoming gatekeepers to the highest level of the sport. </p>



<p>There is an example of the latter on the other side of the Atlantic. The USA’s <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nwsl-tv-schedule-and-streaming-links/">National Women’s Soccer League</a> is arguably the strongest professional women’s league. Founded at around the same time as the WSL, the NWSL kicked off in 2013. It replaced the short-lived WUSA and WPS leagues that both floundered in the early 2000s. While it has seen one club fold and two relocate, the league has been relatively stable. Five of the NWSL’s twelve current sides are affiliated with domestic men’s clubs. </p>

<h4>The franchise game </h4>



<p>The NWSL, like Major League Soccer, operates as a single-entity. The players are all technically employees of the league, not the individual clubs. New teams do not come from lower divisions. Rather owners pay an expansion fee (reportedly <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/investors-buy-nwsl-expansion-team-for-53-million-in-bay-area-20230404-WST-426677.html">$53 million for the latest expansion team</a>) to secure the rights to operate a franchise in a certain location.</p>



<p>The league recently shifted from its original model, where prominent national team players’ salaries were paid by their federation. It has also implemented free agency. But it has also seen <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/united-states-nwsl/story/4831972/nwsl-investigation-finds-ongoing-misconduct-at-more-than-half-of-clubs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">serious recent controversy and scandals</a>, with hard questions needing to be asked of both league and US Soccer officials.</p>



<p>Unlike England, the USA does not have a robust lower division structure on the women’s side. A patchwork of unconnected amateur and semi-pro leagues, mostly featuring short seasons and college players, are the level directly below the NWSL.</p>



<p>Professional <a href="https://www.uslsoccer.com/usl-super-league" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">second</a>– and <a href="https://www.wpslsoccer.com/news/2023/02/08/the-wpsl-announces-new-professional-division-iii-womens-soccer-league" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">third</a>– divisions are in the planning stages, but are still a few years off. Most men’s pro organizations do not have women’s programs at all. Even if it wanted to, the US system simply does not have the infrastructure at present to implement a connected women’s pyramid like England has.</p>



<h4>This is the way. Or is it?</h4>



<p>The American-style closed, franchise league model works wonders for club owners and increasing franchise values. But it also locks out many clubs and communities from ever having a chance at the top levels of the sport. The chosen few Super League clubs in the big towns may well see increased investment and reach higher heights faster. But it could easily come at the expense of every other women’s club in the nation.</p>



<p>The WSL, so far, has emulated the traditional setup of the sport, and has been able to grow and improve as a part of that ecosystem. But as owners of big-name clubs continue to pour money into the women’s game, they see the opportunity to shape the sport to their liking, in a way that would be very difficult to get away with on the men’s side.</p>



<p>And so a choice is on the horizon, and the future of the women’s club game in England, and perhaps the world, is at stake. If England becomes the first domino, it may not be long before the power clubs in France, Germany, Spain and other nations craft plans of their own to sequester their own top tiers. </p>



<p>Will the women’s game in England stay close to the roots of the sport? Will it remain driven by dreams? Or will it become the latest casualty in the ever-increasing corporatization of the beautiful game?</p>

<p>If you’re wondering how to watch the Women’s Super League on US TV, we have the info you need.</p>
<p>The WSL was founded in 2011, replacing the Women’s Premier National Division as the highest tier of English women’s soccer. Run by the Football Association, the division features twelve professional clubs. The league features clubs familiar to men’s football fans, such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, and Manchester United and Manchester City. Chelsea hold the most WSL titles at present, with five to their name.</p>
<p>The top three teams each season qualify for the UEFA Women’s Champions League, while the bottom club is relegated to the FA Women’s Championship. With continued investment, the WSL continues to grow in stature and attract top players. One such player is Australian Sam Kerr of Chelsea. The forward has been with the Blues since 2020, and is the all-time leading scorer in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nwsl-tv-schedule-and-streaming-links/">NWSL</a>.</p>

<p>Like it’s American equivalent the NWSL, the WSL rights in the US are held by CBS.&nbsp;<a href="https://paramountplus.qflm.net/c/330866/1007330/3065" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Paramount+</a>&nbsp;streams select matches throughout the season, usually at one or two per week. Occasionally select games are simulcast on CBS Sports Network, which is available on <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/channels/fubotv-soccer-schedule/">Fubo</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/channels/directv-stream-soccer-schedule/">DirecTV Stream</a>.</p>
<p><a href="https://paramountplus.qflm.net/vnzRry" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Paramount+</a>, the network’s subscription video on demand and live streaming service, is currently as low as $5.99 per month, with a free trial available.</p>
