<p>Olympique de Marseille was founded in 1892. They are one of the most popular teams in France, having the highest average attendance in the league by a wide margin. They’ve played the majority of their history in the top tier of French football.</p>



<p>Originally the club were known as Sporting Club, US Phocéenne and Football Club de Marseille. The name Olympique de Marseille was adopted in 1899. It comes from the historic founding of Marseille by the ancient Greeks, in honor of the Olympic Games. Originally they were a multi-sport club, with rugby being the key sport. In 1902, the club began to play soccer.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Marseille have traditionally played in white kits throughout the club’s history. OM have played at the Stade Vélodrome since 1937, the largest club stadium in France. The venue hosted matches at the 1938 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, as well as 1960, 1984 and 2016 Euros. The ground also regularly hosts the France national rugby team, and occasionally RC Toulon of the Top 14 league.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Olympique de Marseille have captured nine French top division titles, ten Coupe de France, and three Coupe de la Ligue titles. They are to date the only French club to have won the UEFA Champions League, having done so in 1992/93.&nbsp;</p>



<p>OM competes in Le Classique vs Paris Saint-Germain. PSG have always been a competitive side since forming in 1970, but since the Qatari takeover in 2011, have risen to dominate the French game, signing superstars such as Messi, Neymar and Mbappe. This has added extra weight to the traditional north-vs-south, capital-vs-province rivalry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Todd Boehly’s time in charge of <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/chelsea-tv-schedule/">Chelsea</a> has been a whirlwind experience thus far, with the American owner bringing in a raft of new players at great expense. Yet Boehly is now looking to branch out his soccer portfolio with a takeover bid for RC Strasbourg.</p>



<p>Strasbourg currently play in <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/ligue-un-tv-schedule/">Ligue 1</a>, although they are currently in a relegation battle after winning just two of their last 15 league games.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.lequipe.fr/Football/Actualites/Les-proprietaires-americains-de-chelsea-s-interessent-de-pres-a-strasbourg/1382568" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">L’Equipe</a> reported on Monday morning that Boehly’s interest in the French club is legitimate and advanced.</p>



<p>It’s unclear whether he would run the French club as a totally different entity to Chelsea, or whether it would become a spoke on the wheel of his portfolio in much the same way the City Football Group runs multiple clubs across the globe.</p>



<h2><strong>Is Boehly being unfairly critiqued in England?</strong></h2>



<p>It can’t be doubted that Boehly is a serious operator in business. He wouldn’t have built up the level of wealth and success that he has if he wasn’t smart.</p>



<p>However, in England he has been ridiculed at every turn since completing his Chelsea takeover.</p>



<p>Initially his idea of <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/09/13/boehly-premier-league-all-star-game/">introducing an All-Star game</a> was considered silly by the purists in Britain, whilst a rather cruel jibe from Rio Ferdinand intimated that Boehly didn’t actually know how many players were allowed on the pitch at one time.</p>



<p>Americans face a really difficult task in convincing British fans of their competence, through no fault of their own. Be it due to the wariness of Glazer-style ownership models, or coaches who don’t quite work out, British football has always been averse to change. Just ask <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9092927/Schalkes-new-boss-Christian-Gross-laughed-Spurs-spent-six-years-Saudi-Arabia.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Christian Gross</a>.</p>



<p>It is worth asking whether Todd Boehly has been unfairly treated in the British media to this point. The suggestion of him purchasing <a href="https://www.rcstrasbourgalsace.fr/en/racing-en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RC Strasbourg</a> has been met with initial derision, merely because of Chelsea’s own on-pitch struggles at this juncture.</p>



<p>The reality is that Boehly has been smart. His use of longer-term contracts has worked wonders for Chelsea’s balance-sheet with regards to Financial Fair Play, although it is a major gamble with regards to these players needing to be successes.</p>



<p>If Strasbourg fans are worried about this possible takeover, it shouldn’t be related to Boehly’s acumen.</p>



<h2><strong>Boehly’s consortium has spoken with the French club</strong></h2>



<p>L’Equipe gave more detail on the stage that talks are at with regards to Boehly completing a buyout of the Ligue 1 team.</p>



<p>Strasbourg’s president, Marc Keller, has spoken with Boehly and his consortium about investment into the French club, although he wants to acquire 100% of the club.</p>



<p>The stable finances of Strasbourg are particularly attractive to the Chelsea owner, especially at a time when French football is walking towards a financial catastrophe after the collapse of the Mediapro television deal.</p>



<p>An interesting subplot to this story is the fact that Boehly believes Strasbourg would be relatively easy to build up, especially if propped up by player loans, which presumably would come from Chelsea.</p>



<p>The London club have long been criticized for stockpiling talented players and loaning them out. However, FIFA’s rule changes will come into force from July 2023.</p>



<p>These changes limit the number of outbound loans a club can make in a season to seven and then this will move to six in 2024.</p>



<p>Boehly’s rapid recruitment drive at Stamford Bridge has already left the squad bloated, even forcing some to be left off the club’s <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/">Champions League</a> squad list.</p>



<p>There is a sense that perhaps we could see a strategic partnership with Strasbourg. This would allow Chelsea to loan players, and perhaps even ‘sell’ them to the French club. Doing this would help circumvent the aforementioned changes to loan rules.</p>



<p>Once again, it’s clear Boehly is thinking smartly about how to best run Chelsea, even if the results on the pitch aren’t yet showing.</p>

<p><a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/barcelona-tv-schedule/">Barcelona</a> vice president Eduard Romeu claims superstar Lionel Messi could return to the club next summer. His comments come just a couple of months since team president Joan Laporta said that <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2021/08/05/messis-20-year-barcelona-career-ends-as-scramble-for-signature-begins/">Messi’s time with the club</a> is “<a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/barcelona-espbarcelona/story/4706027/lionel-messis-chapter-at-barcelona-not-over-president-joan-laporta" target="_blank" rel="noopener">not over</a>.”</p>
<p>The Argentina striker shocked many in the soccer world when he <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/09/24/messi-claims-he-had-trouble-finding-himself-at-psg/">departed Spain for PSG</a> last year. Although Messi seemingly had a contract agreement with Barca, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2021/08/18/barcelonas-1-5-billion-debt-how-a-mega-club-fell-into-a-financial-black-hole-and-lost-its-star/">financial issues inside the club</a> blocked the deal.</p>
<p>Romeu spoke on Wednesday about Barca’s financial situation. However, it was his remarks on Messi that grabbed people’s attention. “It would be possible financially because if [Messi] returned, it would be as a free agent,” <a href="https://www.ccma.cat/esport3/eduard-romeu-hem-salvat-el-barca-pero-encara-no-el-tenim-sa/noticia/3186823/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a> Romeu. “But it’s a decision which has to be made by the coaching staff and the player. It doesn’t correspond to me [to make those decisions], but it would be viable.”</p>
<h3>Possibility of a Messi return to Barcelona</h3>
<p>The financial problems within the club will apparently ease next summer. “Barca next summer will not have financial problems with the structure that we have set up,” continued Romeu. “Another thing is that we have established some ratios that must be followed.”</p>
<p>Romeu also talked about the concern with the club’s player wages. “With the wage bill, the problem is putting your hand in people’s wallets and that is very complicated. There are contracts signed and we do not breach them. However, 150 million euros have been reduced.”</p>

<p>These reductions could obviously help bring Messi back to Barca in 2023. The superstar was previously making a reported $168.5 million per year before moving to PSG. The Ligue 1 club is keen on keeping Messi and extending his contract a further year.</p>
<p>PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi has not been shy of his feelings towards Barca’s recent sale of commercial assets. “Is this fair? No, it’s not fair … Is it legal? I’m not sure,” <a href="https://www.politico.eu/article/psg-chief-nasser-al-khelaifi-crackdown-barcelona-economic-model-uefa/">stated</a> al-Khelaifi on Wednesday. “If they allow them, others will do the same. UEFA of course have their own [financial] regulations. For sure they’re going to look at everything.”</p>
<p>The two massive teams could be in for a messy battle for the soccer superstar next summer.</p>

<p>Many different cable companies and streaming services are now available with different media rights. Soccer fans get confused with the time-consuming hassle finding the cheapest way to watch the beautiful game. This is even more complicated when fans want to watch multiple leagues from around the globe. As different streaming services charge different fees, let’s find out which major leagues are the cheapest here in the States.</p>
<h5>North American leagues cost more</h5>
<p>Interestingly enough, the costs to watch North American soccer leagues lead the ‘most-expensive’ list for viewers in the United States. Major League Soccer and Liga MX both cost significantly more money to watch than the popular European leagues. This is mostly due to the fact that these two leagues have complicated television rights in the United States.</p>
<p>Multiple television or streaming companies currently own the rights to broadcast MLS and Liga MX games. This means that if you want to catch all, or at least most, of the season’s schedule on TV, you must subscribe to different services. For example, MLS matches air on ESPN, ESPN2, FOX, FS1, and ESPN+.</p>
<p>Liga MX is even more complicated. Each club negotiates their television rights. Some clubs provide exclusive access to broadcasters. For instance, FOX Deportes and FOX Sports share the rights with ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ for home games featuring Monterrey, Santos Laguna and Club Tijuana. Simultaneously, Telemundo Deportes have the English-language and Spanish-language rights to Chivas home games.</p>

<p>As we will see in a minute, many other leagues can be found on one singular streaming service.</p>
<h5>Paramount+, ESPN+ and others</h5>
<p>As far as the major leagues are concerned, Paramount+ currently offers the best monthly price for Americans. Italy’s Serie A and the National Women’s Soccer League are both available for just $4.99 per month. Along with these two leagues, Paramount+ also offers exclusive access to many other soccer competitions.</p>
<p>The main draws of those are the UEFA competitions. The UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League are exclusive to Paramount+ in the United States. While these are not the standard ‘leagues’ like the Premier League or Serie A, these are major competitions followed by millions worldwide.</p>
<p>Although the table below shows the cheapest ways to watch each soccer league, there are other streaming options as well. For instance, Sling Blue is the cheapest way to gain access to the USA Network for many Premier League matches, but other services offer more total channels. FuboTV currently offers more than double of the channels than Sling; however, this streaming service is $15-$30 more expensive each month (depending on which plan you choose).</p>
<p>Along with different streaming service options, many of these companies also offer a cheaper rate if you pay by the year. ESPN+ is currently $6.99 per month or $69.99 annually. Paying by the year would save subscribers nearly $14 per year. Peacock’s Premium version is $4.99 per month or $49.99 annually. For comparison reasons we will show just the monthly options below.</p>

<p>Despite a midweek win, Saint-Etienne’s struggles still mean the club is in a historically poor position.</p>
<p>As things stand, <em>Les Verts </em>average a paltry .68 points per game in <a href="https://www.ligue1.com/ranking" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ligue 1</a>. That number actually jumped following the club’s most recent result. A 1-0 win over Angers ended an eight-game losing skid in the league. Currently, Saint-Etienne is on pace to finish the Ligue 1 season with just 26 points. That just about guarantees relegation.</p>
<p>For context on how substandard this is, this is developing into one of ASSE’s worst seasons ever. The win in gameweek 22 is just the third of the season. Simultaneously, the clubs 13 losses lead the division. Well, they are in the Coupe de France. But, that is mostly because Saint-Etienne played a pair of fourth-division sides.</p>
<p>This team is not like the 10-time title-winners of the 1980s, the 2013 Coupe de la Ligue winners or even the Europa League squad of 2019. Rather, the club’s first relegation since 2001 seems more and more like reality.</p>
<p>Saint-Etienne’s struggles mean that bright stars are on a sinking ship. Decisions are imminent in terms of jumping overboard.</p>
<h3>Saint-Etienne’s recent struggles</h3>
<p>Saint-Etienne dominated the French scene in the 1980s. Clearly, those days are in the past. However, the Saint-Etienne sides of the past 20 years produced elite talents. Among those to come through the ranks at the club are Dimitri Payet, Blaise Matuidi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. As a club, ASSE advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2008-09 UEFA Cup. Also, the club won the now-defunct Coupe de la Ligue in 2013.</p>
<p>From then on, things at the club spiraled downhill. Yet, the club did not trap itself in the relegation zone like the Saint-Etienne struggles of today. Then, Saint-Etienne desperately craved the trophies and European action, even if the club was not quite there. The club’s European drought looked set to continue after exiting the Europa League in the round of 32.</p>
<p>ASSE dropped to 16th place during the 2017/18 season, leading to manager Julien Sablé’s sacking. The replacement, Jean-Louis Gasset, led <em>Les Verts</em> to a 13-game unbeaten streak. The run of form propelled the club to a seventh-place finish in league play.</p>
<p>The next season, Saint-Etienne finished fourth under the guidance of Gasset. Consequently, Saint-Etienne qualified for the Europa League.</p>
<p>Unfortunately for <em>Les Verts, </em>Gasset resigned over transfer money disputes with the board. Without him, Saint-Etienne finished a shortened 2019/20 season&nbsp; at 17th, just seven points above relegation. With a full season resuming in 2020/21, ASSE pulled a rabbit out of its hat. Hovering just above the drop for the entire season, a final stretch of games propelled the club to 11th at season’s end.</p>
<h5>2021/22 Campaign</h5>
<p>A big chunk of the 2020/21 season hinted at Saint-Etienne’s current season. The club started in the worst way possible, kicking off the season with a twelve-game winless run.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“We conceded three goals at home, and it is unacceptable,”</em> star striker Wahbi Khazri ranted.</p></blockquote>
<p>Khazri also used some expletives to show frustration with his teammates’ and his performances.</p>
<p>A win against Clermont Foot dragged Saint-Etienne out of last place. Only Metz’s nine points after 13 games sat beneath ASSE. Then, another win, this time against Troyes, set the stage for a classic Saint-Etienne run of form.</p>
<p>That was until a six-game losing streak put Saint-Etienne back where it started.</p>
<p>In the French Cup, Saint-Etienne keeps moving along. In its first game, <em>Les Verts</em> squeaked past fourth-tier team Lyon La Duchere. A sole goal from Arnaud Nordin prevented parity in the match.</p>
<p>A noticeable improved performance followed in the round of 32, this time against Jura Sud Foot. While this is another fourth-tier side, Saint-Etienne comfortably dispatched its opposition, 4-1.</p>
<p>Now in the round of 16, Saint-Etienne got the luck of the draw again. They will play Bergerac, another fourth-tier side. However, Bergerac is top of its group in that division.</p>
<p>The Bergerac clash will be a big turning point for Saint-Etienne. Advancing to the quarterfinals would be a bright-spot in a notorious campaign.</p>

<h3>The game’s defining Saint-Etienne’s season</h3>
<p>Three games accurately reflect Saint-Etienne’s struggles this season. Without improvement on these performances, chalk the club up to fall to Ligue 2.</p>
<h5>Lorient 1, Saint-Etienne 1</h5>
<p>This game opened ASSE’s Ligue 1 campaign in front of thousands. It appeared to be a promising start after the previous season’s struggles.</p>
<p>Saint-Etienne opened the match in a 4-4-1-1. However, the club failed to score in the first half. Lorient preyed on Saint-Etienne’s inability to score by knocking one in as the second-half got underway. A Wahbi Khazri penalty put the clubs back on level terms, which would remain the scoreline for the rest of the game.</p>
<p>ASSE logged 2.1 xG in the match, according to FBREF. Some of this was because of Denis Bouanga’s heroic efforts. He totaled eight shots and 62 touches, making him an integral part of the offense. Khazri showed his worth with his clinical finishing from the spot.</p>
<p>Overall, the match left a positive note for the season. Clearly, this game provided false hope for the remainder of the USMNT’s season.</p>
<h5>Saint-Etienne 0, Rennes 5</h5>
<p>Undoubtedly, this is Saint-Etienne’s low point of the season.</p>
<p>ASSE, playing in a 4-4-2, conceded a duo of goals early in the match. Martin Terrier scored twice in a span of just six minutes. Rennes struck again, this time off an own goal as the first half concluded. Terrier completed his hat-trick almost immediately after the second half started. Then, in the closing moments of the fixture, Chimuanya Ugochukwu scored the fifth Rennes goal of the day.</p>
<p>Saint-Etienne only won two of its Ligue 1 games then. Consequently, the club entered as massive underdogs. Even then, a loss of this size came as a shock to ASSE supporters and the players alike.</p>
<p>Khazri logged three shots but could not score as he did against Lorient. Saint-Etienne’s defense was surprisingly bad, failing to provide the offense with any kind of hope.</p>
<h5>Reims 2, Saint-Etienne 0</h5>
<p>Zero-point-one. 0.1. That was the xG ASSE produced in a horrific match against Reims.</p>
<p>ASSE lined up in a 4-3-3, focused on capturing their third Ligue 1 win of the season. El Bilal Toure’s 23rd-minute penalty quickly silenced the hopeful murmurs among a helpless Saint-Etienne side. The deficit was just one goal, but it was a bridge Les Verts could not cross.</p>
<p>Khazri did not produce his usual level of offensive productiveness. A red card from Denis Bounanga at the end of the first half did not help Saint-Etienne’s cause either.</p>
<p>Nathanael Mbuku’s 89th-minute score put all possibilities of a draw away.</p>
<p>It was a mediocre performance from Saint-Etienne. The entire Saint-Etienne team produced fewer shots than Toure, by himself, did. Khazri was not as involved in the game as his team needed him to be. The omission of a man forced Saint-Etienne into an uncomfortable position. Reims burnt ASSE down the wings, so their toughness on the flanks will need to be resolved soon.</p>
<h3>Hope for escaping the struggles</h3>
<p>Yet, there is still hope for Saint-Etienne despite its struggles. For one, it is a well-assembled team with a lot of prestige. Also, the roster itself is better than its current league position. Among them are one of the league’s best strikers, two young and agile keepers, and a defensive midfielder that the world’s best clubs have an eye on.</p>
<p>A showdown with fourth-tier side Bergerac in the French Cup will be helpful to see how focused Saint-Etienne is on their season. A quarter-finals appearance will be one of the high points of their season, and on Sunday, they will have a chance to book its tickets to the quarters.</p>
<p>After a derby with Lyon, they will play middling team Montpellier in their first February matchup. Montpellier is a quality side, and their attack is fine. <em>Les Verts</em> will look to exploit a sometimes-frustrated defense on February 5.</p>
<p>Although this looks out of Saint-Etienne’s reach, a PSG matchup looms around the corner. PSG already looks like the 2021-22 champions of Ligue 1, although Ligue 1 only just passed the halfway mark of its current campaign. In a PSG game, we can see the disparity between the ASSE teams of the 1980s and this current side. A win will reveal that the squad is better than the standings say. A loss is expected but will hurt their chances of staying in Ligue 1.</p>

<p>From January 2020 to January 2022, the number of subscribers for each major channel decreased on average. Of course, in that timeframe, the COVID-19 pandemic changed people’s TV viewing habits and hobbies in general.</p>
<p>Nielsen, the data and market measurement firm, recently reported its monthly estimates regarding television channel subscriptions. The findings look bleak for the networks. As a whole, multichannel services, meaning traditional cable, satellite, streaming, dropped more than 10% over the last two years.</p>
<p>Cord-cutting is not necessarily something new in the American television landscape. However, Americans rapidly switched from traditional forms of multichannel TV to specific paid-streaming services. Undoubtedly, this accelerated much faster than anticipated in recent years.</p>
<p>Big conventional entertainment television channels suffered a significant drop in subscriptions during this timeframe. For example, TBS, TNT, TruTV, and USA dropped mightily. However, as many soccer fans in the United States know, NBC switched its home of the Premier League over to USA Network. It will be interesting to see the channel’s numbers moving forward due to the potential increased traffic. Nevertheless, the massive sports networks are not losing customers at the same rate as these entertainment channels.</p>
<p>Although ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, and the now-defunct NBCSN are also down subscribers as well, they only dropped 2-4%. Comparatively the aforementioned entertainment channels dipped 6-9%. FS2 and beIN SPORTS, on the other hand, have actually seen an increase in viewers over the last two years. </p>
<p>One interesting thing to note is the drop in number of subscribers for each major channel in Spanish. While FS2 and beIN SPORTS both rose, FOX Deportes fell by 11% and beIN SPORTS en Español sunk by 24%. The same applies to ESPN Deportes, which collapsed the most at 31% down over the two years.</p>

<p>The differences in subscriber rate could partially be down to the necessity to watch sporting events live. Many viewers access television shows the following day via streaming services such as <a href="https://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=x2vYEsBAJH4&amp;offerid=669015.20&amp;type=3&amp;subid=0" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Hulu</a> or <a href="https://imp.i305175.net/c/330866/828265/11640?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.peacocktv.com%2Fsports%2Fpremier-league" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Peacock Premium</a>. Sure, some sports-specific streaming services offer next-day replays of games. Yet, the added-benefit of watching matches live is that much more important for the viewer.</p>
<h5>Soccer on US TV</h5>
<p>As far as soccer in America goes, there is a bit of a mix bag when looking at the data for the number of subscribers for each major channel. ESPN, FS1, FS2, NBCSN, and beIN SPORTS remain relatively steady under the circumstances. However, that contradicts the trends seen for Spanish-language channels beIN SPORTS en Español and ESPN Deportes.</p>
<p>The streaming service <a href="https://go.web.plus.espn.com/mWebq" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">ESPN+</a> appears to be a major contributing factor to the decline of these two channels. ESPN acquired the rights to distribute Spain’s extremely popular LaLiga ahead of the current season. Generally speaking, all games are available solely through ESPN+. There are a handful of exceptions when games are on TV too, such as the season-opening game, but the trend of streaming-only remains the same. This was the case for El Clásico. Some LaLiga aficionados missed the game due to its broadcast on ESPN+ rather than one of ESPN’s linear channels.</p>
<p>beIN SPORTS previously held the U.S. television rights to La Liga. The Spanish-language sports channel, beIN SPORTS en Español, also aired many of the fixtures in previous years. Despite losing La Liga, beIN SPORTS still currently has rights to a number of competitions. For example, the French Ligue 1, Turkish Super Lig, African Champions League, African Cup of Nations, and the CAF Confederation Cup all run on beIN SPORTS. However, not having La Liga anymore clearly dented its total number of subscribers.</p>
<p>As even more soccer content, and obviously other live sporting events, transition to streaming services, traditional television networks will likely continue to see their subscribers fall.</p>
