<p>Lecce sacked manager Roberto D’Aversa on Monday following the manager allegedly throwing a headbutt toward Verona forward Thomas Henry. Verona picked up a 1-0 win at <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/lecce-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers/">Lecce</a> courtesy of a goal from Michael Folorunsho in the first half. However, the drama transpired after the game. D’Aversa approached Henry, who picked up a red card deep into second-half stoppage time. Cameras on the field captured D’Aversa headbutting Henry in the face, and Henry crumpled to the floor. </p>



<p>In his postgame media time, D’Aversa apologized for his actions. Yet, he says the contact between him and Henry was not forceful and intentional. Instead, it was just contact between two people.</p>



<p>“I would like to apologize to everyone and at the same time reconstruct the sad and unpleasant episode that saw me as a negative protagonist at the end of Lecce-Verona,” D’Aversa said. “I came into contact head-to-head with Henry, but I did not hit the Veronese player with a headbutt, nor did I receive one from him. It was a physical contact, a bad example, an unsportsmanlike image resulting from great tension and adrenaline which, however, must not and do not want to be my excuses or mitigating factors.”</p>

<p>Immediately after the game, Lecce condemned the actions of its manager. Lecce said it was a tense situation after the narrow game. However, the actions of the manager have no place in the sport. Then, on Monday, Lecce released another statement that terminated the status of D’Aversa as the manager of the club. Lecce directly identified the actions that happened in the postgame as the reason for relieving D’Aversa of his duties.</p>

<p>The club did not identify the manager who is replacing D’Aversa for the remainder of the season. The boss who comes in faces the task of keeping Lecce in <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/serie-a-tv-schedule/">Serie A</a> for the third straight season. The loss to Verona allowed Hellas to jump Lecce in the league table. As things stand, Lecce is just one point above the relegation zone. In all likelihood, Lecce was plotting to change its manager before this postgame incident. Lecce has one win in its last 12 games. </p>



<p>That has Lecce firmly in contention to drop down to Serie B. There are seven teams separated by just three points. Lecce’s most recent loss to Hellas Verona was particularly significant. Verona was on the border of the relegation zone at the start of matchday 28. Now, it is in 13th. </p>

<p>Lecce will have the chance to grab crucial points in its first game without D’Aversa. The side travels to Salernitana, which is the worst team in Serie A based on the table. <h4>Lecce History</h4>



<p>Unione Sportiva Lecce were founded in 1927 in Lecce, located in the southeastern section of Italy (the heel of the boot). Lecce are actually a phoenix club, successors to Sporting Club Lecce which played from 1908 to 1924.</p>



<p>This second version of Lecce also had early troubles, ceasing operations in 1932. But they would return in 1934 and have remained active since.</p>



<p>For decades, the club was mired in the second and third tiers of Italian football. They finally made it to Serie A for the first time in 1985, but were relegated after just one year. They’ve been up and down every few years since, including a spell in the 2010s back in Serie C.</p>



<p>Lecce have never won Serie A, but have conquered the second tier twice and third tier four times over the years. If they can remain in Serie A, the club will be looking to secure their first ever berth in a UEFA competition.</p>



<p>S.S.C. Bari, the only other truly “major” team from the Apulia region, is Lecce’s big rival. </p>



<p>The Stadio Via del mare was originally built in 1966, and holds over 40,000 fans. Tragically, in 2007, a club equipment manager was killed when lightning struck the pitch during a training session.</p>

<h4>Lecce History</h4>



<p>Unione Sportiva Lecce were founded in 1927 in Lecce, located in the southeastern section of Italy (the heel of the boot). Lecce are actually a phoenix club, successors to Sporting Club Lecce which played from 1908 to 1924.</p>



<p>This second version of Lecce also had early troubles, ceasing operations in 1932. But they would return in 1934 and have remained active since.</p>



<p>For decades, the club was mired in the second and third tiers of Italian football. They finally made it to Serie A for the first time in 1985, but were relegated after just one year. They’ve been up and down every few years since, including a spell in the 2010s back in Serie C.</p>



<p>Lecce have never won Serie A, but have conquered the second tier twice and third tier four times over the years. If they can remain in Serie A, the club will be looking to secure their first ever berth in a UEFA competition.</p>



<p>S.S.C. Bari, the only other truly “major” team from the Apulia region, is Lecce’s big rival. </p>



<p>The Stadio Via del mare was originally built in 1966, and holds over 40,000 fans. Tragically, in 2007, a club equipment manager was killed when lightning struck the pitch during a training session.</p>

<p>AC Milan were dealt a major blow in their hopes of retaining their title as they were held to a 2-2 draw against newly promoted Lecce.</p>



<p>The Rossoneri had a terrible start to the game falling behind by 2-0 in the opening 23 minutes before Rafa Leao and Davide Calabria scored in the second half to rescue a point in a highly entertaining game at the Stadio Via del Mareon Saturday evening.</p>



<h5>Consecutive 2-2 draws</h5>



<p>This was Milan’s second consecutive 2-2 draw with Roma last week, a result that now leaves the defending Champions nine points adrift of table toppers Napoli who thrashed Juventus 5-1 on Friday. </p>



<p>It took Lecce just three minutes to open the scoring on the night in front of their vociferous home fans as Federico di Francesco’s cross from the left was bundled home into his own net by Milan left back Theo Hernandez.</p>



<p>Di Francesco should have made it 2-0 for the hosts minutes later but the 28-year-old Italian winger flashed Gabriel Strefezza’s cross field straight across the face of goal. </p>



<h5>Giroud misfires</h5>



<p>Olivier Giroud then spurned a golden opportunity to restore parity when the Frenchman ballooned a rebound over the bar following Tommaso Pobega’s shot which came off Lecce goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone’s face.</p>

<p>Federico Baschirotto made it 2-0 for the home side following a short corner it was Milan who looked lackluster all across the pitch. Stefano Pioli made changes at half time, and which paid off as the traveling side showed class in the second half. Leao scored in the 58<sup>th</sup> minute to beat Falcone from a tricky angle to halve the deficit before Calabria restored parity in the 70the minute with a looping header.</p>

<p>Lecce who were undefeated in their last four outings in the Serie A including wins over Lazio and Atalanta could have won the game at the very end but a ricochet off Fikayo Tomori went inches wide of the net. </p>



<p>The home side sit 12<sup>th</sup> in the standings with 20 points from 18 games while Milan who are second will now hope that Napoli drop points in their upcoming matches to rekindle their hopes of defending their Scudetto. &nbsp;</p>
