
<p>Spanish-language coverage of the 2024 <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/copa-america-tv-schedule/">Copa America</a> will be on the properties of TelevisaUnivision in the United States. This tournament is significant in the United States for a handful of reasons. At the top of those is the fact that <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/tyler-adams-reveals-potential-usmnt-copa-america-appearance-20221228-WST-413653.html">select CONCACAF teams</a>, including USA, may participate in the traditionally South American competition.</p>



<p>TelevisaUnivision has held the rights to this tournament in the past. For example, it broadcasted the Copa America in 2021 as Argentina lifted the trophy with a win over Brazil. In terms of English-language coverage, FOX already locked up the rights to the tournament for viewers in the United States. The tournament’s schedule is June 14 to July 14, the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/euro-2024-and-copa-america-to-be-played-on-same-dates-20230414-WST-428577.html">same as the European Championship</a>.</p>



<p>In <a href="https://corporate.televisaunivision.com/press/2023/05/16/televisaunivision-announces-expansive-sports-offering-in-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the announcement</a>, the media company stated all 32 games of the tournament would be available on the TelevisaUnivision platforms. However, it did not specify where those will be. The company does have <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/07/03/vix-plus-pricing-details/">ViX</a>, which it describes as the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/vix-soccer-spanish-language-fans-20220217-CMS-371676.html">Spanish home of soccer</a>. For linear TV coverage, the company’s channels include TUDN, Univision and UniMás, each of which air soccer games regularly. In addition to the games, there will also be other content, which includes buffer coverage in between games.</p>

<h2>2024 Copa America is a major get for TelevisaUnivision</h2>



<p>In total, there will be 16 teams in the 2024 Copa America on TelevisaUnivision. The ten CONMEBOL teams includes the defending World Cup and Copa America champions, Argentina. As of now, Messi’s international future remains up in the air. If he does play, there is the chance it is his last competition with Argentina.</p>



<p>However, and more importantly for North American audiences, there is a strong likelihood that the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/concacaf-trio-could-feature-in-2024-copa-america-20221206-WST-411401.html">United States, Mexico and Canada participate</a> in the tournament. Granted, those teams, as well as Costa Rica, are not guaranteed in the tournament. However, if they reach the semifinals of the 2023/24 CONCACAF Nations League, they get into the Copa America. Those four teams are automatically in the quarterfinals of the Nations League due to their CONCACAF ratings index points.</p>



<p>Regardless of the six CONCACAF teams that join the South American nations, the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/2024-copa-america-to-be-hosted-in-united-states-20230127-WST-417271.html">2024 Copa America will be in the United States</a>. It will be the second time the country hosted the CONMEBOL event after the Centenario in 2016. </p>

<p>TelevisaUnivision’s coverage of the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/">UEFA Champions League</a> for the 2022/23 season has a duality. Viewers will feel comfortable knowing that the quality level of production and talent feels very familiar. At the same time, there are many changes underfoot. The introduction of the streaming platform ViX adds a different dynamic that wasn’t there before.</p>
<p>To better understand the changes and to get a sense of the vision that the Spanish-language broadcaster has for the UEFA competitions, World Soccer Talk caught up this week with President of Sports at TelevisaUnivision Olek Loewenstein.</p>
<h3>How ViX is shaking up its UEFA coverage</h3>
<p>First, let’s get to the changes. None of the thirty two Champions League games for the first two weeks of the season appear on <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/channels/galavision/">Galavision</a>, one of the many channels under the umbrella of TelevisaUnivision. Another big change is that the non-televised games are now available on ViX or ViX+ as well as on TUDNxtra. For instance, out of the sixteen Champions League games this week, 50% of them are only available in Spanish-language via ViX+ (priced at <a href="https://vixplus.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$6.99 per month</a>). Meanwhile, four games are available on the free ViX platform. </p>
<p>Suffice to say, a select number of Champions League games on TUDNxtra is a big change for viewers who have been accustomed to switching on the television (or logging in via TUDNxtra) and watching all Champions League games for free.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, select games are still available on television via Univision, UniMas and TUDN, as before.</p>
<p>“We will keep the best games on free-to-air [Univision], and ViX will become the hub for European soccer competitions,” said Loewenstein. “ViX will be the place where you’ll be able to see all of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA national team games.”</p>
<h3>Positioning ViX</h3>
<p>ViX has news, entertainment, shows and movies. But when the focus comes specifically to soccer, Loewenstein helped explain the strategy.</p>
<p>“It’s undeniable that streaming is going to be a big part of the future of sports,” Loewenstein said. “There are some people who say it will be the future, period. I still think there’s going to be a combination of platforms.</p>
<p>“The way we’re doing it is that we’re thinking of ViX as an outlet for soccer. In the past, with linear channels, we have very limited inventory especially in the world of soccer where most of the games happen between Friday and Sunday at concurrent times. On a linear network, you basically need to choose one game. The other ones, you just can’t program [on linear television].</p>

<p>“We thought of ViX as the place where we could cater to other Hispanics. So we acquired the rights for the Peruvian league, Argentine league, Brazilian league and the Colombian league. Those are leagues you can watch on ViX.</p>
<p>“I mention ViX in general because we have a windowing strategy. For most of these leagues, we have a ‘game of the week’ in front of the paywall, and the rest of the games behind the paywall. We have the same concept with Mexican soccer.”</p>
<p>Speaking of Mexican soccer, Liga MX continues to be the “bread and butter” of TelevisaUnivision’s success story when it comes to club soccer. Interestingly, though, the broadcaster has three times more non-Hispanics watching Champions League than the Mexican league, according to Loewenstein.</p>
<h3>TelevisaUnivision’s interest in acquiring more soccer rights</h3>
<p>In August, CBS Sports paid <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-08-19/champions-league-to-stay-on-paramount-with-1-5-billion-us-deal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$1.5 billion</a> to renew the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/08/19/cbs-renews-uefa-champions-league-rights-through-2029-30/">English-language rights to the UEFA Champions League</a> for 2024/25 through 2029/30. For the Spanish-language rights, UEFA and Relevent Sports have decided to pause the bidding process until the streaming landscape gets more competitive between ViX+ and <a href="https://imp.i305175.net/c/330866/1313913/11640" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Peacock Premium</a>.</p>
<p>With ViX wanting to be the world’s largest streaming service dedicated to Spanish-language content, renewing the rights to a prestigious competition such as the Champions League is an important piece of their strategy.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, when asked about any interest in the rights to CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores that expire this year, Loewenstein replied, “We’re always looking at potentially acquiring rights but the problem at this point is that, for us at least, it needs to have economic value. We will go after every single piece of rights that are out there as long as it makes a return on investment for us. So it’s not a matter of whether we want it, it’s whether we can acquire it for the price that we’re willing to pay.”</p>

<p>In conclusion, Loewenstein summed up how he sees TelevisaUnivision’s position in the broadcast world when it comes to soccer. “I think we’ve positioned ourselves in the market with probably the greatest team and combination of resources between Mexico and the US to cover the sport of soccer. And that is being reflected in the coverage that we do and the results that we have.”</p>

<p><em>Editor’s note: For the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) game against Panama in Orlando, World Soccer Talk’s Kyle Fansler was invited by TUDN to get a unique, behind-the-scenes study of what it takes for a major television broadcaster to air live coverage of a massive World Cup qualifier.</em></p>
<p>TUDN’s World Cup coverage for USMNT games resembles more of an army than it does a production team.</p>
<p>In Sunday’s fixture between the U.S. and Panama, a team of 35 to 40 <a href="https://www.worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/channels/tudn">TUDN</a> employees worked together to bring the broadcast into more than half a million Spanish-language households in the nation. In fact, the Spanish-language broadcast on TUDN and <a href="https://www.worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/channels/unimas">UniMas</a> averaged 503,000 viewers. It would normally have been more, but Honduras-Mexico was happening at the same time.</p>
<p>To fit the task of catering to the Spanish-language households watching U.S.-Panama, dozens of cameramen, editors, producers and other staff collaborated on a live broadcast where the fate of the USA’s chances of World Cup qualification was on a knife’s edge.</p>
<p>On the screen, it looks simple enough. There is one main camera and several others throughout the stadium. However, the complexity goes down to the details for each camera. Plus, the complexity rises when you consider that TUDN also uses cameras from FOX Sports, which carried English-language coverage of the game.</p>
<p>There is a certain give and take. For example, TUDN uses three cameras specifically provided by FOX. These are the main camera and the two behind each goal.</p>
<p>Yet the decisions to switch cameras rapidly in the game to go along with replays comes from outside the stadium in the TUDN truck.</p>
<p>This is just an example of the ins and outs of what it takes to broadcast a USMNT game for the Spanish-language audience. There are also studio shows, on-site desks and a four-man broadcast team in the booth to put out the game.</p>
<p>Chronologically, here is the breakdown of coverage on Sunday night’s game that saw the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2022/03/28/us-offense-dominant-win-against-panama/">U.S. beat Panama, 5-1</a>.</p>
<h3>TUDN World Cup coverage from Exploria Stadium</h3>
<p>For Sunday night’s game, TUDN held an hour of dedicated pregame coverage as well as an hour of postgame coverage. However, the analysts and studio hosts from Exploria Stadium had hits throughout the day. Therefore, their day truly starts over five hours ahead of kickoff.</p>
<h5>Pregame</h5>
<p>The talent, which for this game featured a four-man broadcast booth, showed up to Exploria Stadium in Orlando at around 2 p.m., five hours before kick off. For this game, that meant Tony Cherchi, Luis Omar Tapia, Ramses Sandoval and Marcelo Balboa arrived at Exploria Stadium well before the party got started.</p>
<p>The reason for this is so they can understand the rundown of what will be covered during pregame. Also, these commentators perform two- to three-minute hits for TUDN’s pregame show.</p>

<p>Remember, TUDN, has its World Cup studio coverage away from the stadium, down in Miami at its headquarters. While the actual dedicated pregame show did not start until an hour before kickoff, whatever programs ran by the broadcaster featured little snippets of content from the desk at Exploria Stadium. This could be one question Ramses Sandoval asks Marcelo Balboa or just a conversation between two behind the desk.</p>
<p>However, this is carefully orchestrated by the producers, including Alejandro Lodeiro. At Exploria Stadium on Sunday, the questions that Sandoval asks or the sideline reporter asks a player as they enter the stadium are pre-planned. Lodeiro and others at TUDN carefully planned out a rundown for the show weeks in advance, and those questions fit that organization.</p>
<h5>Prior Planning</h5>
<p>Things will change going into the game. For example, the U.S. picked up a draw at the Estadio Azteca, and Gio Reyna made a <a href="https://the18.com/en/soccer-entertainment/gio-reyna-run-vs-mexico-every-angle-reaction">headline-grabbing mazy run</a> from one box to the other.</p>
<p>So, when putting together this run down, there were things that were already established. For example, the history of World Cup qualifiers between Panama and the United States. Or, a special on <a href="https://twitter.com/TUDNUSA/status/1508207973071568896">Panamanian Román Torres</a>, who scored a brace in the last match of the 2018 qualification cycle to send Panama to its first <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/world-cup-tv-schedule/">World Cup</a>.</p>
<p>These require extensive research and production, and time to put together. However, in order to not date itself, TUDN air content that changes just hours before it goes live. For example, the sideline reporter interviewed Jesús Ferreira when the starting lineups came out. An unexpected start, producers believed fans would be interested in how the Colombian-born attacker would take the opportunity.</p>
<p>The aforementioned effort by Gio Reyna was a major talking point. In fact, it signaled a potential return to the starting lineup for Gregg Berhalter. However, when TUDN learned he would remain on the bench, it took away some magnitude from the special interview they had with Reyna once the U.S. returned from Mexico. Regardless, the piece aired during the TUDN dedicated pregame World Cup coverage.</p>
<h5>Game time</h5>
<p>While viewers watch the pregame and are set for kickoff, the craziness amplifies for the production crew at the venue. The truck, which houses the director and producer, replay organizer, audio and video crews, sits in the parking lot just minutes from the field.</p>
<p>Inside the truck, over ten people operate boards that control how the viewers at home experience the game. However, it is not as simple as one person directing someone to change the camera that comes back on the main feed.</p>
<p>Let’s start with the cameras. As stated previously, TUDN and Univision use a set of camera provided by FOX, US Soccer and Exploria Stadium. Furthermore, Univision uses the main feed from FOX throughout most of the game. Still it is up to the director, Dacio Alonso, to make the decisions.</p>
<p>For reference, he estimates that Sunday’s game had 3,000 cuts between cameras during the broadcast. That does not include the cuts from FOX, which provides the world feed for the game in terms of video and audio.</p>

<h5>Video and audio</h5>
<p>FOX’s cameras and TUDN’s cameras may not always look the same. That could be due to the sunset game and the fact that brightness and exposure change as the lighting shifts from daytime to night.</p>
<p>To fix this, one operator uses joysticks to change filters to ensure proper lighting and color. Also, he ensures it is consistent across all the cameras in the stadium.</p>
<p>That way, the director does not have to call out changes to ensure better picture quality. Rather, he sees the polished product and chooses from there.</p>
<p>On the other side of the truck, the audio team perfects the sounds of the game. While the audio and video automatically synchronize, TUDN takes certain considerations into effect. For example, TUDN opens up the microphones on the field to capture more ambient and crowd noise.</p>

<p>The crowd, ball contact, referee whistle and even players yelling are audible throughout the game. Univision and TUDN create a more authentic experience for the viewers at home.</p>
<h3>Capturing the emotion</h3>
<p>A trend consistent among asking the talent, producers and directors from Univision and TUDN is capturing emotion. In the Spanish culture, it inherently exists based off of verbiage and tone. Yet, Univision increases this sentiment.</p>
<p>Audio and video certainly contribute to that. As does commentary. The four-man commentary team is a busy room. But, it allows for more casual conversation regarding the game rather than obscure facts.</p>
<p>Each member of that team puts together statistics and puts in hours upon hours of research and game film to prepare for the game. However, once the game starts, the chemistry allows for something more akin to a friendly discussion, not simple commentary.</p>

<p>In the studio, “Fútbol Central” will preview all the matchups prior to kickoff. Then, following the final whistle, “Misión Europa,” will break down the day’s results. Additionally, TUDN’s whip-around program, “Zona Fútbol,” will provide the ultimate soccer viewing experience, breaking in live to concurrent group stage matches with instant analysis and reaction to the game as it unfolds.</p>

<p>Univision this week unveiled TUDN’s comprehensive coverage of the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup. Univision Communications Inc. will bring soccer fans every minute of action of the premier tournament on Univision, UniMás, Galavisión, and TUDN, with special coverage beginning Friday, July 2 as PrendeTV, Univision’s free ad-supported streaming service, will stream the nine remaining matches from the Preliminary Round.</p>
<p>Following their explosive matchup in the Concacaf Nations League Final, the United States and Mexico lead a field that includes Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Panama, Jamaica, and Canada, among others. Defending champion El Tri will make their tournament debut Saturday, July 10, at 10 p.m. ET (Univision/TUDN), while the USMNT will make their first appearance the following day, Sunday (7/11), at 8:30 p.m. ET (Univision/TUDN).</p>

<p>Univision’s TUDN has acquired the U.S. Spanish-language rights to this summer’s 2021 Copa América. The deal gives TUDN access to the 28 matches from this summer’s tournament, as well additional CONMEBOL events, including Women’s Copa América and Men’s Olympic qualifiers.</p>
<p>With the acquisition of the Copa América rights, the deal positions the Spanish-language broadcaster as the go-to network for soccer this summer. TUDN’s The <em>Summer of Champions</em> campaign kicks off with the UEFA Champions League Final on May 29 and continues through the summer with competitions including the Liga MX Guardianes 2021 Final, CONCACAF Nations League, UEFA EURO 2020, Copa América Argentina – Colombia 2021, CONCACAF Gold Cup, Campeón de Campeones, the MLS All-Star Game, and UEFA Super Cup.</p>
<p>“We are excited to see the crown jewel of South American soccer return to the Univision family as TUDN continues to double-down on its promise to provide the best soccer from around the world,” said Juan Carlos Rodriguez, president of Sports, Univision. “This deal gives TUDN this summer’s three biggest soccer tournaments for a total of nine trophy competitions and 120 plus matches, marking a historic run of live soccer telecasts never before seen in the industry. It will be an action-packed summer for the home of soccer, and we look forward to bringing every moment to our fanáticos.”</p>
<p>In the world of sports business where change is always constant, it appeared that Telemundo Deportes was close to securing the Copa América rights in early 2020. And then the coronavirus pandemic struck, the 2020 Copa América competition was rescheduled to the summer of 2021, and the rights negotiations took a pause. When conversations restarted with CONMEBOL, Univision Deportes emerged as the new frontrunner with today’s announcement making the acquisition official.</p>
<p>It’s going to be a busy summer for Univision/TUDN. The 2021 Copa América (June 13 to July 10) runs almost in parallel to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/euro-2020-tv-schedule/">Euro 2020</a> (June 11 to July 11). What it’ll afford Univision is the ability to broadcast Euro 2020 games in the morning and early afternoons followed by Copa América games in the evenings for an entire month, followed by a month-long broadcast (July 10-August 1) of the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/gold-cup-tv-schedule/">CONCACAF Gold Cup</a>.</p>
<p>Today’s news is a welcome relief for Univision. After Univision suffered the double blow of losing the Spanish-language rights to both the 2018/2022/2026 FIFA World Cups and 2019 Copa América tournaments to Telemundo Deportes, Univision bounced back by <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2017/05/16/univision-shares-details-uefa-champions-league-europa-league-coverage/">acquiring the rights to the UEFA club competitions</a>. Now with the Copa América acquisition, Univision has been able to muscle out rival Telemundo Deportes who <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2020/01/14/telemundo-interested-in-copa-america-rights-and-planning-for-tokyo-2020-soccer-coverage/">tried to acquire the rights</a> for the U.S. market. Telemundo can focus on its Spanish-language coverage of the rescheduled Tokyo Summer Olympics.</p>
<p>Having rights to three major soccer tournaments over two months would be a major headache for most broadcasters, but Univision has big plans. Univision Communications already has the over-the-air Univision and UniMas networks, in addition to TUDN (previously known as Univision Deportes) and Galavisión. More details will be released soon, but later this month, Univision will launch its free, ad-supported Spanish-language streaming service titled <a href="https://prende.tv/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">PrendeTV</a> (loosely translated as “turn on television.”) Coverage plans have not been announced as of press time, but PrendeTV will surely play a key role in expanding the reach of the Copa América coverage this summer.</p>
<p>With the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/podcasts/soccer-streaming-wars-of-2021-world-soccer-talk-podcast/">streaming wars heating up</a> between leaders Disney+, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/watch-soccer-via-paramount-plus/">Paramount+</a>, HBO Max, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/primesignup?ref_=assoc_tag_ph_1402131641212&amp;_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=pf4&amp;tag=et00d-20&amp;linkId=6b0f457884c43b5e1f8f5166b84640c4" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Amazon Prime</a>, Netflix, <a href="https://tv.apple.com/channel/tvs.sbd.4000?at=1010l35s4" rel="noopener" target="_blank">AppleTV+</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/how-to-watch-soccer-via-peacock/">Peacock TV</a>, Spanish-language content is missing out on the transformative change in viewing habits of U.S. consumers. PrendeTV plans to change that with live sports, linear channels and on-demand content. As many as 30 live, linear streaming channels are expected at launch —&nbsp;each focused on different categories such as sports, movies, news and comedies.</p>
<p>PrendeTV will be available via connected smart TVs as well as apps across OTT streaming devices and phones, tablets and computers.</p>

<p>With streaming making a big play in 2021 and beyond, competitor Telemundo Deportes is left without a compelling streaming service. In its way is <a href="https://imp.i305175.net/peacock" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Peacock TV</a>, which is owned and operated by Telemundo’s parent company NBCUniversal. In the last few weeks, the streaming service has begun streaming soccer games in Spanish-language from Telemundo Deportes. But by doing so, it’s cannibalizing the far greater viewing numbers the broadcaster could have achieved for the same games on its television network. </p>
<p>Telemundo Deportes finds itself caught between a rock and a hard place —&nbsp;a Peacock TV streaming service that isn’t thought of as a destination for Spanish-language content, and a Telemundo television network that is prevented from broadcasting some soccer games when those games are available in English on Peacock.</p>

<p>While Telemundo faces several challenges, Univision/TUDN will be optimistic about the boost the viewing numbers for Copa América can bring. Looking back to the last time Univision had the rights to the tournament, the 2016 Copa América Centenario was a ratings bonanza for the Spanish-language broadcaster. With the benefit of games being played in the United States and featuring the host country as well as Mexico playing games in U.S. primetime, the 2016 final alone was <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2016/06/28/watched-copa-america-centenario-games-univision/">watched by 6.8 million viewers</a> across Univision and Univision Deportes.</p>
<p>While Mexico won’t be participating in this summer’s tournament, the competition features some of the most exciting national teams on the globe including Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador and Uruguay.</p>
<p>Anticipation is already building for the 2021 Copa América with Lionel Messi proclaiming that it’s his best chance to <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/messi-2021-copa-america-argentina-title-near-misses">win a major trophy with Argentina</a>.</p>
<p>As for the English-language rights to this summer’s Copa América, no decision has been reached as of press time. With Euro 2020 happening on the same dates, which will be quickly followed by the 2021 Gold Cup, plus Univision/TUDN attracting the vast majority of the viewers interested in Copa América, the value of the English-language rights to the competition are expected to not be as great as usual. </p>
