<h4>History of the Liverpool vs NUFC rivalry</h4>



<p>As frequent competitors in England’s first division, Liverpool vs Newcastle is a historically common fixture. However, neither side considers the other amongst their main rivals.</p>



<p>Liverpool has a fierce rivalry with Manchester United, as well as nearby Liverpool neighbors Everton. Conversely, Newcastle’s main rivals are traditionally Sunderland and Middlesbrough.  </p>



<p>However with the recent Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle, and their ensuing rise to the EPL’s elite, games between the two clubs will surely take on more importance in the coming years.</p>



<p>Liverpool defeated Newcastle in the 1974 FA Cup final, the only time the two have met in the final of the competition. </p>



<p>One memorable league match between the two was in 1996. Near the end of the season, both clubs were fighting for the title. Liverpool won 4-3 in a stoppage time thriller, buoying their title hopes (though Manchester United would end up winning).</p>
