
<p>It is safe to say <em><a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/podcasts/welcome-to-wrexham-and-why-pro-rel-is-or-isnt-a-non-starter-in-the-us/">Welcome to Wrexham</a></em> financially impacted the Welsh club.  The docuseries follows the team as celebrity owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney attempt to take Wrexham A.F.C to new heights.</p>



<p>Popularity of the first season has helped fuel the need for a second season.  In fact, a <a href="https:\/\/www.mediaplaynews.com/reelgood-hbo-maxs-house-of-the-dragon-tops-weekly-streaming-sylvester-stallones-samaritan-has-strong-debut/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">television statistics aggregator</a> suggested <em>Welcome to Wrexham</em> ranked seventh in the most-watched U.S. shows at the beginning of September.  McElhenney has since <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/tv/mcelhenney-confirms-welcome-to-wrexham-season-two-20221013-WST-404291.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">announced</a> that season two will be available in 2023.  </p>



<p>Because the show is so popular, Wrexham created record sales in merchandise.  In a statement released by the club, online sales exceeded $400,000 during a period from August to September.  This does not include sales at the physical team shop at the Racecourse Ground or elsewhere in the city.</p>



<p>“There was never any doubt that the interest in Club merchandise would increase because of the documentary but even the most optimistic projections did not reach the above levels,” the <a href="https:\/\/www.wrexhamafc.co.uk/news/2022/september/the-impact-of-welcome-to-wrexham/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">statement</a> read.</p>



<p>For comparison, the team claims that total online sales were around $67,000 in the similar timeframe last year.</p>

<h2>Re-sellers jumping on Wrexham sold-out kits</h2>



<p>The club claimed that the team’s third shirt would be a “go-to” product for fans of the show.  However, both this jersey and the home kit are currently sold out.  Re-sellers have been hitting places like eBay to cash in on the frenzy.  </p>



<p>Previous sales on the site show that Wrexham jerseys have been regularly re-selling for $150-$400.  The current highest price for a <a href="https:\/\/www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&amp;_nkw=wrexham+afc&amp;_sacat=0&amp;LH_Sold=1&amp;LH_Complete=1&amp;_sop=16" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wrexham jersey purchased on eBay</a> is an astounding $562.</p>



<p>The team’s away blue jersey is still currently available on <a href="https:\/\/www.wrexhamafc.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the team’s website</a>.  Nevertheless, there are only a few small sizes remaining.  Wrexham have, however, stated that a new supply of the jerseys will soon be accessible.  </p>



<p>“The good news is that more training wear stock is on the way over the next few weeks with a significant top-up order of match shirts due before Christmas,” claimed the club.</p>



<p>World Soccer Talk reached out to kit suppliers Macron for comment but have yet to hear back.</p>

<h2>Wrexham’s FA Cup replay another plus for ESPN</h2>

With commentators Guy Mowbray and Alan Smith calling the game exclusively for the audience in the United States, they were aided by pitchside talent featuring host Angus Scott. He was joined by analysts Steve Watson and Hal Robson-Kanu.</p>



<p>Blyth Spartans’ late equalizer meant that a replay is necessary to determine a winner. However, Monday’s FA Cup draw for the First Round will reveal who the winner of Wrexham-Blyth plays in the next round. A win for Wrexham against Blyth certainly improves their chances of being featured by ESPN once again.</p>

<p>ESPN’s connection to Wrexham AFC is a marketing dream, helping both companies promote each other. </p>



<p>First, there’s the <em>Welcome to Wrexham</em> series on Hulu (<a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/tv/mcelhenney-confirms-welcome-to-wrexham-season-two-20221013-WST-404291.html">season 2 has been greenlit</a>), which is available as part of the <a href="https:\/\/go.web.plus.espn.com/mg25qa" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Disney Bundle</a>. Second, <em>Welcome to Wrexham</em> airs in Europe on <a href="https:\/\/go.web.plus.espn.com/c/330866/865651/9070" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Disney+</a>. Third, viewers are drawn to Wrexham games on <a href="https:\/\/go.web.plus.espn.com/mWebq" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESPN+</a> because of the popularity of Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Fourth and finally, ESPN+ promotes many of its other soccer programming during Wrexham games. For instance, Saturday’s Blyth-Wrexham match promoted El Clásico, as well as the DFB-Pokal Cup.</p>



<p>Most importantly, though, is the storytelling aspect. <em>Welcome to Wrexham</em> has done an incredible job at telling us the stories of the players, staff, volunteers and fans involved with the club. And they’ve done it in such an endearing way. We feel for the Wrexham community. At the same time, the series has helped us feel part of the community itself, too.</p>

<p>This game actually changed time slots just to accommodate the American audience. Previously, the Blyth vs Wrexham game had minimal coverage plans. After all, these are two non-league teams just trying to get to the first round proper of this season’s FA Cup. However, with the rise in popularity of Wrexham AFC, the FA bumped the game up by two hours for the American audience.</p>



<p>This game is actually at Blyth, meaning that many Americans are seeing the side for the first time. In terms of Wrexham, many fans may be used to the Racecourse Ground and the players. This is something entirely new for them.</p>

<p>As stated, Wrexham AFC is now a household name for many Americans. A fair few of these fans are not even soccer fans. They might just be followers of the owners of the club, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. </p>

The <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/podcasts/humphrey-ker-interview-executive-director-at-wrexham-afc/">documentary series</a> that follows events surrounding Wrexham A.F.C., as well as their owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, has been a resounding hit.</p>



<p>McElhenney himself confirmed that the show will come back for an additional season. “Oops. Sorry. Tonight is the last episode of Season 1 of @Wrexhamfx,” McElhenney tweeted on Wednesday. “Season 2 will return next year. I have a clause in my contract that stipulates I will not do anything less than 16 seasons of a TV show.”</p>



<p>The actor’s joke is a reference to another show <em>It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia</em>. It has also been confirmed that season 16 of this show will be released sometime in the Fall of 2023.</p>



<p>Fans of season 1 of <em><a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/podcasts/welcome-to-wrexham-and-why-pro-rel-is-or-isnt-a-non-starter-in-the-us/">Welcome to Wrexham</a></em> met the program with overwhelming praise since its release in August. Reelgood is an aggregator that compiles statistics on television streaming. The website claims the show, starring McElhenney and Reynolds, finished as the <a href="https:\/\/www.mediaplaynews.com/reelgood-hbo-maxs-house-of-the-dragon-tops-weekly-streaming-sylvester-stallones-samaritan-has-strong-debut/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seventh-most watched show</a> in the United States for the week of September 2nd.</p>

<h2><em>Welcome to Wrexham </em>season two</h2>



<p>Rotten Tomatoes has also reported an average <a href="https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/welcome_to_wrexham" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">approval rating of 90%</a> from critics for <em>Welcome to Wrexham</em>. Along with high praise from the critics, the show currently has a 97% average audience score by the film and television review-aggregation website as well.</p>



<p>McElhenney and Reynolds previously bought Wrexham A.F.C in a deal completed in February of 2021. Fans of the team overwhelmingly backed the purchase by the duo with nearly 99% of voters happy with the agreement.</p>



<p>Founded in 1864, Wrexham is the oldest team in Wales. The Red Dragons currently compete in the fifth tier of the English Football League’s system.</p>



<p>Due to the public attraction of the new owners, the club was included in FIFA 22 as a “Rest of the World” team. It was the first non-league club to be included in the video game.</p>

<p>The winner of the Fourth Qualifying Round game moves on to the First Round of the oldest national football competition in the world. During the First Round, teams from League One and League Two enter the competition. Therefore, the prospect of a non-league team facing a much bigger club creates an enticing David versus Goliath opportunity.</p>



<p>Wrexham, currently in the National League, are hoping to get promoted from the fifth tier of English football. </p>



<h2>Wrexham’s chance to break through the TV barrier</h2>



<p>This season, Ryan Reynolds took to Twitter to express his frustration that the <a href="https:\/\/twitter.com/vancityreynolds/status/1564327631750832130" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National League and BT Sport wouldn’t allow games to be televised</a> live to fans both domestically and internationally. With the FA Cup, the competition gives Wrexham an ideal opportunity to advance through the tournament in order to reach a worldwide television audience.</p>



<p>In the United States, many of the FA Cup games are <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/where-to-watch-the-fa-cup-on-us-tv/">shown exclusively via ESPN+</a>. For ESPN to decide to broadcast a Fourth Round Qualifying game on US television is remarkable.</p>



<p>Coincidentally, both Reynolds and McElhenney appeared on the studio set of SportsCenter in a skit that aired on <em>Welcome to Wrexham</em>.</p>



<p><em>Welcome to Wrexham</em> airs on Wednesday nights on FX, and is shown on demand via Hulu. FX also announced that the documentary series is <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/tv/mcelhenney-confirms-welcome-to-wrexham-season-two-20221013-WST-404291.html">returning for a second season</a>. <p>This documentary highlights <a href="https:\/\/www.wrexhamafc.co.uk/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Wrexham AFC</a>, a club in the fifth tier of the English soccer pyramid. In late 2020, actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over ownership of the club, despite having no prior knowledge of soccer ownership. Eventually, they find out that the club is a symbol of the city. The soccer club provides hope for a community that desperately needs it. However, Reynolds and McElhenney do not exactly carry an air of expertise in sports ownership.</p>
<p>Therein lies the premise of the show. A pair of famous actors take over the third oldest professional club in the world and try to lead it back to glory. Boardwalk Pictures, the same production company responsible for Netflix’s <em>Last Chance U</em>, produced <em>Welcome to Wrexham</em>.</p>

In total, there are a total of 10 episodes, with two episodes airing each of those Wednesdays. Therefore, the last episodes air on September 21.</p>
