<p>Now that the World Cup Draw is complete, it’s time to analyze the pros and cons of the World Cup TV schedule. After all, a lot is known already. That is even before the TV schedule is officially confirmed by FOX Sports.</p>
<p>For instance, FIFA has finalized the kickoff times and schedule. Telemundo has already confirmed its TV schedule. Plus, we also know the countries participating. All that’s left is for FOX Sports to decide what channels to utilize for the games. Even then, those details are subject to change for a myriad of different reasons. That sometimes happens even after the tournament begins.</p>
<p>Suffice to say, everything is subject to change.</p>
<h5>What we know so far</h5>
<p>The 2022 World Cup takes place in Qatar, which is eight hours ahead of United States’ East Coast. As a result, the kickoff times for the majority of Group Stage games are 5AM, 8AM, 11AM and 2PM ET.</p>
<p>On television, live games in English-language are shown across FOX, FS1 and FS2. Spanish-language games are available across Telemundo and Universo. In fact, 56 games will air live on Telemundo. Only the eight concurrent Group Stage finale games will air on Universo. In total, the 64 games will be live in Spanish on television and streaming.</p>
<p>For cord cutters, Peacock Premium will be streaming every World Cup game in Spanish. FOX Sports has not yet announced their streaming plans.</p>
<h3>Pros and cons of the World Cup TV schedule</h3>
<p>Let’s start with the benefits of the 2022 World Cup TV schedule.</p>
<p>First, each of the three Group Stage games featuring the United States kick off at 2PM ET. The matches are on a Monday (versus either Ukraine, Scotland or Wales), Friday (against England) and a Tuesday (versus Iran). While weekend matches are preferable, the Friday game against England is on Black Friday. That’s traditionally a day when many workers have a day off. Overall, all three games should generate significant viewing numbers, especially for FOX Sports.</p>
<p>Second, the World Cup Draw has produced several tantalizing games, on paper at least. For instance, on November 27, Spain hosts Germany in a game between two powerhouses in world soccer. A day earlier, it’s Mexico against Argentina. If the 2006 game between the two countries is anything to go by, it should be a thriller. We have the aforementioned England against United States on Black Friday. Plus there’s Portugal versus Uruguay. That match could feature Cristiano Ronaldo going up against Luis Suarez.</p>
<p>Plus, you have a Thanksgiving Day 2022 treat of Portugal-Ghana, Brazil-Serbia, Uruguay-South Korea and Switzerland-Cameroon.</p>
<h5>Strong start to the World Cup</h5>
<p>Third, the way that the schedule has been set, it flows very well for broadcasters despite the morning start times. In a peculiarity of this year’s competition, host Qatar doesn’t play the first game of the tournament. That’s to the advantage of broadcasters because the more attractive fixture of Senegal-Netherlands starts the competition instead. Albeit, at five o’clock in the morning for viewers on the East Coast.</p>
<p>Having said that, the first day of action does include the United States in its debut game. England playing that day also should generate a lot of interest. Day two includes Mexico, current World Cup champions France and Argentina (starring Leo Messi). Day three includes intriguing matches for Germany, Belgium and Spain. And so on and so forth. By having the U.S. on opening day, and then big games continuing after that, it should hold most people’s attention from the start. That will certainly be the hope of FOX and Telemundo, who are looking at the soccer TV ratings very closely.</p>

<p>Fourth and finally, despite World Cup 2022 not having a “Group of Death,” the tournament is very balanced in every one of the eight groups. That will increase the likelihood that most games will go down to the final day of Group Stage matchups. Plus, the balanced groups should avoid any major blow-outs. The matches are finely balanced, ultimately making it more competitive.</p>
<h5>FOX and Telemundo face several obstacles</h5>
<p>First, the scheduling of the competition in November and December instead of the customary summer months is a major issue. It was such an issue that when FIFA made the decision, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/27/sports/soccer/why-fifa-made-deal-with-fox-for-2026-cup.html" rel="noopener" target="_blank">FOX Sports threatened to sue FIFA</a> for changing it. For U.S. viewers, the months of November to December are synonymous with the NFL, World Series and other American sports leagues. Having a soccer tournament played in a very busy sports calendar for Americans is not ideal, by any means.</p>
<p>Still, FOX threatening to sue FIFA did result in the American broadcaster reaping a big benefit. Namely, <a href="https://www.si.com/soccer/2015/02/12/fifa-fox-usa-tv-rights-world-cup-2026-telemundo" rel="noopener" target="_blank">FIFA let FOX Sports acquire the rights</a> to the 2026 FIFA World Cup without competitors being allowed to bid. This was before a decision was reached to award the hosting of the 2026 competition to North America. By threatening FIFA, FOX has acquired the rights to arguably the most lucrative soccer tournament ever on US television.</p>
<h5>World Cup will be a TV ratings challenge</h5>
<p>For Qatar 2022, FOX Sports will find it very difficult to turn World Cup 2022 into a TV ratings juggernaut. As a result, it’s more important than ever for the United States to go deep in this competition. </p>
<p>FOX Sports will want to beat the 2018 World Cup TV ratings. Russia 2018 averaged 4.6 million viewers per game. Compared to the previous tournaments, the 2014 World Cup averaged approximately 8.1 million viewers combined on the ESPN and Univision networks.</p>
<p>Finally, the biggest challenge that FOX Sports faces is the World Cup Final. The game is on Sunday December 18, 2022, beginning at 10AM ET. That conflicts with FOX’s coverage of the NFL. However, there have been discussions that the <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/washingtonfootball/news/fifa-world-cup-qualifying-football-schedule-conflict" rel="noopener" target="_blank">NFL may adjust its schedule</a> that day to accommodate the FIFA World Cup.</p>
<h5>Competing with the NFL for attention</h5>
<p>Overall, the 2022 FIFA World Cup will end up being a bridge too far for both FOX Sports and Telemundo. It’s tough enough that broadcasters face the herculean task of enticing viewers to tune in from 5AM to 4PM ET. If the competition was during the summer, that would be one thing. But having the competition clash with American football, at a key point in the NFL season, is an insurmountable task. The best FOX and Telemundo can hope for is winning new fans to get them ready for World Cup 2026. At least that competition will be in the summer in timezones that are favorable to American viewers.</p>

<p>Beginning immediately, beIN SPORTS XTRA en Español is available via <a href="https://www.prende.tv/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Prende TV</a>, the streaming service from TelevisaUnivision. The addition of the new channel means that when Prende TV becomes ViX on March 31, 2022, beIN SPORTS XTRA en Español will be available on the free ad-supported streaming platform.</p>
<p>The decision to rename and redesign Prende TV to become ViX is happening only a year after Prende TV launched in March, 2021. Currently, Prende TV features more than 40 streaming channels and 10,000 hours of VOD programming. </p>
<h5>What XTRA includes</h5>
<p>The addition of beIN SPORTS XTRA en Español to Prende TV (and subsequently ViX) will bring select soccer games into more homes. The streaming service includes select games from Ligue 1, Turkish SüperLig, Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. Plus, the 24/7 streaming network also includes highlights and documentaries, as well as other sports.</p>
<p>Getting access to beIN SPORTS’ biggest events such as PSG and major Copa Libertadores games, beIN SPORTS XTRA en Español is not it. Instead the content is interspersed with advertising. Even recent live events including the Africa Cup of Nations featured commercial breaks in the middle of action during the game.</p>
<p>To get all of the vast majority of content that beIN SPORTS offers, you still need either beIN SPORTS or beIN SPORTS en Español.</p>
<p>Still, beIN SPORTS XTRA en Español is free. So you do get what you pay for.</p>
<h5>ViX adds more soccer</h5>
<p>ViX does offer far more programming than just the XTRA channel. For example, TelevisaUnivision recently added select matches from the Colombian and Peruvian soccer leagues to its streaming platform.</p>
<p>Recently when asked about ViX’s growth as a streaming platform, Juan Carlos Rodriguez, president of Sports Global Enterprises of TelevisaUnivision said, “We will continue expanding our sports offering to position ViX as an incredible soccer destination for Spanish-Language speakers around the globe like only we can do.” </p>
<h5>Different to the TV channel</h5>
<p>Not to be confused with beIN SPORTS en Español, the free beIN SPORTS XTRA en Español is available in many ways.</p>
<p>Firstly, beIN SPORTS XTRA en Español is available in the U.S. and Canada on FuboTV. After that, it is available in the U.S. on PlutoTV, Vizio, XUMO TV, Fanatiz, KlowdTV, and Canela TV.</p>
<p>Secondly, to find the XTRA stream on <a href="http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-3301630-13571894" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Roku</a>, it is located under The Roku Channel app. The livestream is also <a href="https://therokuchannel.roku.com/search/bein%20sports" rel="noopener" target="_blank">available through the Roku website</a>.</p>
<p>Thirdly, XTRA and its sister XTRA channel beIN SPORTS XTRA is available through streaming and television channels nationwide. In addition, HC2 Broadcasting is now carrying beIN SPORTS XTRA in a total of 45 top DMAs. In detail, beIN SPORTS XTRA en Español is in 42 top DMAs. To explain, DMAs are Designated Market Areas. For example, they are among the largest cities in the U.S.</p>

<p>Growing up as a child in a Croatian immigrant family, life in Queens was a different experience for Pete Radovich Jr compared to other American kids. After all, not every family had a relative playing as a goalkeeper in the same team as Johan Cruyff.</p>
<p>These days, if soccer fans don’t know Pete Radovich Jr by name, they know him by his work. As an executive producer with forty-plus Emmy Awards, you’ll have seen Radovich’s production across CBS Sports’ coverage of the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, Serie A and Concacaf competitions.</p>
<p>For soccer fans, it was the summer of 2020 that viewers first got a chance to experience Radovich’s production. After <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/podcasts/turner-says-goodbye-to-champions-league-world-soccer-talk-podcast/">Turner Sports bailed on the UEFA Champions League</a>, CBS <a href="https://www.sportspromedia.com/news/champions-league-tv-rights-cbs-turner-uefa/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">picked up the pieces</a>. In doing so, they scrambled together a studio team during the pandemic to broadcast the rest of the 2019/20 UEFA club competitions.</p>
<h5>A breath of fresh air</h5>
<p>Not only did they pull it off, but the coverage was refreshingly different. For example, it featured A-list talent such as Jamie Carragher, Roberto Martinez and Micah Richards.</p>
<p>Radovich, speaking exclusively to World Soccer Talk, remembers those days quite well.</p>
<blockquote><p>“We started this in the summer of 2020 right in the height of [COVID], with restrictions on travel and quarantining,” Radovich explained. “Our production meetings early on were very much [an open forum]. The first meeting [where we were all together in a big room] that we ever had with the Champions League group, [the talent] just started talking. Whether it was about personal things in their lives, or opinions, or whatever was going with the sport.</p>
<p>“This went on for an hour with [Peter] Schmeichel, Jamie, Roberto, Micah, Alex Scott and Kate [Abdo]. I was on the floor laughing at times at how much fun they were having. At some point, Kate turned to me and said to me, ‘Are we going to start the production meeting? Are we going to do something here?’</p>
<p>“And I remember distinctly saying, ‘What you guys just did for an hour, that’s our show.&apos;”</p></blockquote>
<p>While soccer fans like myself were new to Radovich at that time, most sports fans will have seen his work previously. Radovich has produced CBS Sports’ coverage of the NFL, NCAA Championships and golf. He has produced the weekly highlight show, <em>Inside The NFL</em>, as well a piece for <em>60 Minutes</em>. If that’s not enough, he directed music videos for CBS’s coverage of the Super Bowl and Final Four, featuring musical artists Jay-Z, Queen, Green Day, and P-Diddy.</p>
<h5>Timing is everything</h5>
<p>The Super Bowl, March Madness and 60 Minutes is one thing. But soccer came to Radovich at just the right time for him and CBS Sports.</p>
<p>“I think this was a perfect storm for me,” Radovich said. “A lot of luck that this happened to me at this point in my career. You do this for a few years, you get some confidence. And you’re willing to take some risks.”</p>

<p>Before Radovich became CBS Sports’ Vice President of Production and Senior Creative Director, he got his start in the industry at NBC Sports.</p>
<p>“[NBC Sports] invited me to the [1996] Olympics that summer as a Production Assistant. I guess I did a pretty good job because when we got back from the Olympics, they offered me a full-time job doing NFL for a season.</p>
<p>“Right out of college, right out of that internship, my career started. And it took off from there.”</p>
<p>For soccer fans who have been watching CBS’ coverage of soccer since the summer of 2020, you may have noticed some of the hallmarks of Radovich’s production style. At the heart of it is allowing the talent to be themselves.</p>
<p>“What we’re trying to do is just be ourselves, and be entertaining while informative” said Radovich.</p>
<h5>Pete Radovich interview: The future beckons</h5>
<p>Looking to the future, Radovich wants to keep taking risks and expanding CBS’s soccer coverage past just match broadcasts. He and his team are working diligently on long-form documentaries despite the challenges such as the pandemic, which has impacted travel and access.</p>
<p>“Now, thankfully, all of that is starting to loosen up,” explained Radovich. “And now we can really start doing some cool stuff.”</p>
<p>Part of that is the flexibility that Paramount+ offers. While television windows are more condensed, the freedom of Paramount+ allows for bonus coverage and other projects.</p>
<p>“[With Paramount+], what we’ve done so far is truly the beginning,” Radovich said. “We’re very aggressive. We’re very forward thinking and risk taking, not risk-adverse. We’re going to try some things. Yeah, I love it.”</p>

<p>The US Soccer Federation (USSF) has sold their English-language broadcast rights to WarnerMedia, whose sports coverage is anchored by Turner Sports for the period that spans 2023 to 2030. This package includes US Men’s and Women’s National Team home matches, She Believes Cup, any potential USSF-hosted men’s national team competition (most likely in 2025) and the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, one of the oldest domestic club cup competitions on the planet. The question is, what does the Turner Sports deal mean for U.S. Soccer?</p>
<p>This deal is the first made individually by US Soccer in two decades, without the bundling of rights with MLS via Soccer United Marketing. The announcement will mean that absent acquiring away rights to individual US matches, or signing a deal with Concacaf, ESPN will not broadcast any US Soccer matches after 2022 for almost four years.  FOX Sports’ coverage will be limited to major tournaments.  CBS will continue to broadcast the Concacaf Nations League, including US matches until the end of 2023. </p>
<h5>Recovering from the Bleacher Report debacle</h5>
<p>While many soccer fans in the United States associate Turner with the botched B/R Live coverage of UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, (coverage that ended prematurely as the <a href="https://www.si.com/soccer/2020/07/08/cbs-sports-acquires-uefa-champions-league-broadcast-rights#:~:text=Report%3A%20CBS%20Acquires%20UEFA%20Champions,20%20and%202020%E2%80%9321%20Seasons&amp;text=CBS%20has%20reportedly%20acquired%20broadcasting,Harris%20of%20World%20Soccer%20Talk." rel="noopener" target="_blank">rights were transferred to CBS Sports</a> during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic), the broadcaster has lots of positive experience in broadcasting sports. </p>
<p>The B/R Live experiment failed, and our sources indicate that this go-round with soccer, WarnerMedia and Turner Sports will be much more traditional with their coverage. The B/R Live branded UEFA coverage was designed to be edgy and appealing to younger fans, but it instead turned off many long-standing soccer supporters.  </p>
<p>Presumably the move of rights to WarnerMedia beginning in 2023 will have a completely different feel than the UEFA coverage. For starters, sources indicate to us that WarnerMedia plans to use its own talent on the broadcasts rather than a world feed. Secondly, with the <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/discovery-warnermedia-merger-gets-u-s-antitrust-clearance-1235089790/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">pending merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery networks</a>, additional soccer experience and knowledge will be brought in-house to the merged entity. </p>
<h5>Soccer experience overseas and in women’s soccer</h5>
<p>It’s often forgotten in the US market, but Discovery is a major player in sports broadcasting including soccer on the European continent. </p>
<p>In addition, Turner did broadcast women’s soccer matches from the US in the early 2000’s, including several Atlanta Beat matches that featured Cindy Parlow Cone as a star player. Parlow Cone is now the President of US Soccer and was involved in the negotiation of this deal with WarnerMedia. </p>

<h5>Turner Sports’ advantages over ESPN</h5>
<p>It’s almost certain that the types of broadcast windows and bumper coverage US Soccer will find on WarnerMedia will be far superior to ESPN, which has recently taken the approach of often shoehorning programming in-between other sports. The production value and talent could also be superior to FOX Sports’ coverage, given Discovery’s experience and Turner’s own outstanding NBA, NCAA Basketball and MLB coverage. </p>
<p>One of the complaints recently voiced to me by a US Soccer insider about ESPN’s coverage of US Soccer, was how the She Believes Cup, an annual women’s national team competition, was given poor time slots and limited bumper coverage by ESPN. It’s ironic that a week after a US-New Zealand game was bumped up to ABC, ESPN has lost the rights to the competition.  </p>
<p>ESPN’s inability to commit to linear programming before and after US Men’s National Team (USMNT) qualifiers as well as CBS Sports’ use of streaming to exclusively air USMNT qualifiers has created a desire among many fans for broader national team coverage on linear TV. With the announcement that TNT or TBS will televise approximately ten matches each year, TNT and TBS can provide the types of broadcast windows ESPN and CBS have failed to provide in the last six months. </p>
<h5>What does the Turner Sports deal mean for U.S. Soccer?</h5>
<p>Additionally, frustration about the promotion and visibility of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup has reached a boiling point among many fans. WarnerMedia has the bandwidth to really promote the competition. Turner Sports’ experience with the similarly-formatted NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (a property they share with CBS Sports) also could help in how they broadcast the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. </p>
<p>Some concerns do persist with this deal. As of press time, HBO Max is a streaming package that is not sports-specific. For many soccer fans, it’ll mean subscribing to another new streaming service. Plans start at $9.99 per month.</p>
<p>An additional concern is that WarnerMedia does not own its own over-the-air broadcast network, so every match will be on cable or streaming, a marked change from a recent era when FOX over-the-air network and ABC have televised US National Team matches, including friendlies, on both the men’s and women’s side. </p>
<p>Overall though, despite whatever qualms some fans have about WarnerMedia and Turner Sports, this deal is likely a positive development for not only the broadcaster and US Soccer, but for fans as well. WarnerMedia is likely to put substantial effort into the broadcasts, and to air matches on linear television with a robust streaming component. </p>

<p>TelevisaUnivision has added select matches from the Colombian and Peruvian soccer leagues to its streaming platform. As a result, the leagues will be more accessible than ever before in the United States.</p>
<p>Currently, select games from Colombia Categoría Primera A and LIGA 1 Perú are available via PrendeTV, the free ad-supported streaming service. As of March 31, <a href="https://prende.tv/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">PrendeTV</a> will evolve into ViX, the new Spanish-language streaming service. Compared to PrendeTV, ViX will have an improved interface and more content.</p>
<p>Just a few of the well-known teams that play in leagues from Colombia and Peru include Alianza Lima, Sporting Cristal, Junior F.C., Independiente Medellin, Universitario, Independiente Santa Fe, among many others.</p>
<p>For example, this weekend, Prende TV will stream the Clásico Vallecaucano on Saturday. The game features Deportivo Cali versus América de Cali clash (6PM ET kickoff). On that same evening, PrendeTV will stream Deportivo Municipal vs. Universitario (7PM ET) from the Peruvian league.</p>
<h5>Growing the ViX brand</h5>
<p>“The addition of these two South American leagues to our robust streaming soccer offering, which also includes the Brasileirão, Argentina’s Liga Profesional de Fútbol and select Liga MX and UEFA Champions League matches, leverages TUDN’s positioning as <em>The Home of Soccer</em> and makes it available on ViX to super-serve fans with the best competitions from around the globe,” said Juan Carlos Rodriguez, president of Sports Global Enterprises of TelevisaUnivision. “We will continue expanding our sports offering to position ViX as an incredible soccer destination for Spanish-Language speakers around the globe like only we can do.”</p>

<p>Up until now, fans of Colombian and Peruvian club soccer teams had limited options for watching games. Available through DirecTV, Perú Magico had been televising games from Peru. As for the Colombian league, games were available exclusively via the streaming service <a href="https://fanatiz.jbbfvx.net/k3E2d" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fanatiz</a>. Select games were also televised via the RCN Nuestra Tele channel.</p>
<h5>PrendeTV’s other soccer content</h5>
<p>In addition to leagues from Colombia and Peru, Prende TV has more soccer. In July 2021, TelevisaUnivision finalized an agreement to stream live matches from the Campeonato Brasileirão Série A and B and Argentine Primera División games, including playoffs and the SuperCopa, to fans over its PrendeTV service.</p>
<p>The launch of ViX on <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20220216006017/en/TelevisaUnivision-Introduces-ViX-World%E2%80%99s-Largest-Spanish-Language-Streaming-Service" target="_blank" rel="noopener">March 31</a>, 2022 (and late 2022 for ViX+) will mean that Prende TV (just launched in March 2021) will be phased out. With ViX, the plan is for TelevisaUnivision to have one global brand. TelevisaUnivision sees the ViX app as its be-all and end-all.</p>
<p>ViX will also include a brand-new 24/7 sports news channel called Zona TUDN. This will be in addition to the 100+ linear channels available for free on ViX.</p>
