<h2>The reason why Ronaldo is mising</h2>



According to Adidas, the image is part of a&nbsp;major upcoming advertising campaign&nbsp;that will be unveiled before the 2026 World Cup. Every figure in the photograph, from Zidane to Messi, shares two key traits:&nbsp;they are all World Cup winners,&nbsp;and&nbsp;they are all affiliated with Adidas.



That combination explains everything. Ronaldo, while one of soccer’s greatest ever,&nbsp;has never won a World Cup&nbsp;— and he remains one of Nike’s most prominent athletes. For that reason, he was naturally excluded from the promotional shoot.

In the beginning, MLS was a little league that merited little notice internationally. &nbsp;On occasion an all star went overseas and their previous career was noted by pundits, but MLS itself was paid little heed by the Sky Sports of the world. &nbsp;For better or for worse, this changed with the Beckham Experiment when the eyes of world soccer were turned to our league to see just how competitive it could be. &nbsp;And while MLS is still tipped occasionally as a minor league mainly by a few ignorant journalists, it has been successful in attracting enough foreign talent that papers like The Guardian&nbsp;have at least online reporters covering the MLS beat. &nbsp;I attribute this to MLS’s ability to attract foreign veterans to come over and play, mainly because of the flexibility the designated player rule allows but also because of the success of Beckham and Thierry Henry. &nbsp;For the past five years, MLS has been the perfect non-European landing spot for these kind of stars. &nbsp;If top-flight European teams were not interested in your services, MLS was a place to go to continue to receive the attention, salary, and playing time you think you deserve. &nbsp;MLS was competing for Robbie Keane with second-tier teams in major European leagues and small Euro leagues, and it seemed like these were the kinds of battles the league would keep winning. &nbsp;Any time an older star was thinking about a change of scenery, MLS would be the ideal destination.
But just as MLS was establishing itself as a recognizable league, the competition for stars increased and now MLS has to decide how dedicated it is to attracting big-name but older superstars. &nbsp;The first competitor was the Middle East, as businessmen flush with oil money looked to attract stars to build up their country’s leagues. &nbsp;Specifically, the United Arab Emirates began to flash money at former World Cup stars to attract some attention to the UAE Pro-League. &nbsp;Despite attracting Diego Maradona as manager and a few other borderline name players, the exodus of talent to UAE and other Middle Eastern countries has not happened. &nbsp;However, China and now Australia have replaced the Middle East as MLS competitors with some massive signings and, as opposed to the UAE forays into international waters, these two could pose more danger to the MLS business model.
China sent waves through the international soccer community this summer when UEFA Champions League Finals hero <a href="http:\/\/goal.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/08/29/drogba-provides-hope-for-fans-of-chinese-club/" target="_blank">Didier Drogba announced he would play for Shanghai Shenhua</a>, a fairly successful team in the Chinese Super League. &nbsp;Prior to his signing, teammate and long-time rumored MLS target Nicolas Anelka was the star signing for the league. &nbsp;Anelka’s move was even more surprising considering his brother was the manager of former USSF team A.C. St. Louis and had been rumored to be positive on bringing his brother over for a while. &nbsp;With a successful Olympic games bringing positive attention to the sport and China becoming a global superpower, the same economic interests that brought Beckham to the U.S. are now capable of luring marketable players to China. &nbsp;Italy moving its domestic cup final to China is a sign of the economic power of the country in the game, although <a href="http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com/articles/352337/20120614/soccer-football-corruption-china.htm" target="_blank">internal troubles</a> could quickly derail any momentum the league is building.
Now Australia has joined the ranks of countries trying to push its soccer league into international consciousness. &nbsp;Long a country where soccer ranked well behind other national sports (sound familiar?), the Hyundai A-League has suffered through poor attendance and management controversies. &nbsp;However, with new clubs springing up and a strong bid by Australia for the 2022 World&nbsp;Cup, the league looks dedicated to&nbsp;stabilizing&nbsp;and expanding. &nbsp;The biggest sign of this is Sydney FC’s signing this morning of Italian star Alessandro Del Piero. &nbsp;The international soccer star <a href="http:\/\/m.smh.com.au/sport/a-league/del-piero-signs-with-sydney-20120905-25exy.html" target="_blank">signed a six-month contract worth $2 million</a>&nbsp;and immediately became the headliner for the little league. &nbsp;While this is not the first time the Sky Blues have signed a big-name (they did ink Dwight Yorke a few years back), according to the rumors mill they did beat out the Greek league, Scotland’s Celtic, and even potentially Liverpool for the Azzurri talisman’s signature. &nbsp;Del Piero is the most recent “marquee player” signing, a rule in the A-League that allows clubs to sign players outside of the restrictive salary cap (sound familiar?) to attract high-profile names.
What does all this mean for MLS? We can argue over whether older European stars coming to the U.S. has been a positive for the domestic game, but in terms of attention and coverage from the international soccer community the answer is yes. &nbsp;While MLS has always had to compete with leagues in South America and lower-level European leagues, new moneyed clubs in China and Australia offer players a chance to go into other major media markets to make big money for their declining skills. &nbsp;For MLS, a league that has financially benefited from attracting some big names, this competition may force a strategic decision from the league offices. &nbsp;Should they continue to spend money and compete with the A-League and Chinese Super League for the brightest (but fading) stars? Or should MLS turn its attention to developing younger players who can bring the league prestige for its play and promising talent? &nbsp;Or can the league have both? I suspect not, thus prompting a critical decision point for the league offices.

New Markets Are Challenging MLS Appeal For Europe's Name Players

In what has become a habit for Juventus, the Bianconeri dropped two points and settled for a draw with Catania. Juve could not defend a 2-0 lead over the visitors who have yet to register their first away win of the season. The Bianconeri squad is lacking in quality and this is evident when the legendary but aging Alessandro Del Piero is the main source of creativity for the team.
As discussed in previous pieces (Check: <a href="http:\/\/www.serieatalk.com/will-juventus-qualify-for-the-champions-league/3502">www.serieatalk.com/will-juventus-qualify-for-the-champions-league/3502</a>), the Bianconeri have seen slight improvement compared to last season but there are still some glaring problems:
– The Bianconeri are still weak at the full-back positions. Juve lack quality full-backs and have yet to replace Gianluca Zambrotta who departed following the Calciopoli scandal in 2006.
– Juve lack a creative player. Diego was sold and perhaps it was the proper decision but when Del Piero is not playing, the Bianconeri clearly lack a player who can create scoring opportunities. Alessandro Matri is decent but he is a finisher and not one who can easily create his own scoring opportunities. Fabio Quagliarella is perhaps the only player besides Del Piero who can create something on the attacking end yet he has been sidelined by long-term injury.
– The centre-back positions remain fragile, particularly when Giorgio Chiellini is out due to injury or suspension. Andrea Barzagli is a mere short-term replacement and can perhaps cover for a game or two but not for an extended period.
– The Bianconeri’s management must make the right decision during the summer by signing at least three quality players and bringing in another three decent players to cover various positions. There is a need for two full-backs, a centre-back, a winger and an attacking player who can create scoring chances.
– Luigi Delneri might be a good person but this is about coaching and he seems best fit to take charge of a provincial side. Delneri appears to be dealing with problems that might be too much for him to handle considering the ambitions of a prestigious club such as Juve. Below are some interesting stats about Delneri:
1) He lost 9 games while in charge of Sampdoria last season and has already lost 9 matches with Juventus in Serie A this season
2) With Roma he lost 16 games in just one season and his results with Palermo were not impressive
3) Delneri has never won more than 50% of matches he coached over a season. He achieved that once with Sampdoria.
4) Delneri is not great with substitutions. He has often been criticized for the changes he makes during a game. Against Catania he started with Marco Motta, a certain candidate to be replaced or to receive a red card in almost any game, and then replaced Motta. He also replaced Del Piero and Matri with Simone Pepe and the less mobile Luca Toni.
5) Delneri is not flexible when it comes to tactics. He does not seem to be a commanding figure and is not inspiring. Would established and experienced players or even rising stars want to play for a coach such as Delneri? It is doubtful Turin will be an attractive destination for quality players with Delneri in charge. Juve need a quality and well-established coach to take over.
Obviously this summer will be a busy one in Turin and the changes to be made could be drastic and will likely cover the coach as well as the squad. To blame everything on Delneri would be unfair and inaccurate. The squad at his disposal is lacking and has many glaring weaknesses but it is hard to see how Delneri can return Juve back to the top of Italian football when he seems to be limited in his tactics and substitutions. Mention the 2009-2010 season to Juventus’ 170 million fans and they will shake their head in disgust.&nbsp; Italy’s most successful and <a href="http:\/\/www.repubblica.it/2008/08/sezioni/sport/calcio/sondaggio-calcio/tifo-juve-inter/tifo-juve-inter.html" target="_blank">beloved</a> soccer team was a shell of itself, missing out on a European tournament spot due to poor play and aging players.&nbsp; It is not a coincidence that the Italian national team also failed to live up to expectations in the World Cup, as Juve players made up a large contingent of the team.&nbsp; Overall, it was a season to forget in Stadio Olimpico and the club wasted no time in cleaning house, replacing individuals from the team president down.&nbsp; The new Juventus still has many familiar names, but has strengthened its weaknesses to make a run at the top four. 
Management: Jean-Claude Blanc, the brainchild behind the new Juventus stadium, was forced out in May 2010 and replaced with Andrea Agnelli, the fourth member of his family to run Juventus.&nbsp; Similar to Blanc, he has a business background and is tasked with maintaining the profitability of the club.&nbsp; No doubt part of his financial plan includes UEFA tournament money.
His first task upon being hired was to grab Luigi Del Neri from Sampdoria as a permanent replacement for Ciro Ferrara.&nbsp; Del Neri guided Sampdoria to a top four finish and was in demand this offseason.&nbsp; His 4-4-2 style will be a good fit for Juventus, and look for the team to focus a bit more on defense this season.&nbsp; Del Neri could, however, actually play more of a 4-2-2-2 if he extends the wings and moves them forward in the attack.&nbsp; Juventus in their matches this month have also played a 4-3-3 at times.&nbsp; He’s seen success at Atalanta before guiding Sampdoria to the Champions League, and he was the best person available for the job. 
The Transfer Market: Juventus was active in the transfer market, as to be expected, sending out older&nbsp;and more expensive players and bringing in both quality starters and key backups.&nbsp; Maybe the biggest name to come to Juventus was Pepe, acquired on loan from Udinese with an option to buy.&nbsp; Del Neri knows Pepe from his time in Palermo, and has added him as an attack option on the right side.&nbsp; The club also beefed up its defense, which is discussed in depth below.
The continuing story of this offseason is the departures from the club, or a house cleaning if you prefer.&nbsp; Italian national and rapidly aging defender Fabio Cannavaro has left for the UAE soccer league and a hefty contract.&nbsp; Christian Poulsen was transferred to Liverpool for about €5.5 million to free up some salary and space after a disappointing stint with the club.&nbsp; The biggest loss long-term, however, may be <a href="http:\/\/blogs.soccernet.com/juventus/archives/2010/08/ciao_gio.php" target="_blank">the loss of Sebastian Giovinco</a> to Parma.&nbsp; The young playmaker had been tabbed by fans as the next Juve star, but he grew tired of waiting to break into the starting XI. 
Key Players: Starting in the back of the 4-4-2, vice-captain and all-world keeper Gigi Buffon begins the season&nbsp;on the injured list, leaving AC Milan acquisition Marco Storari as the starter.&nbsp; Storari will never cause people to forget Buffon, but he is experienced and talented enough to hold down the position until Buffon is healthy.

Coming into the new season, Del Neri knew he needed to revamp the defense after Juventus allowed 55 goals last season.&nbsp; He acquired rising star Leonardo Bonucci from Bari and Marco Motta from Roma to partner with stalwarts Giorgio Chiellini and Fabio Grosso, or if Grosso leaves during this transfer window, Paolo De Ceglie.&nbsp; The two new additions will strengthen the backline and makes defense a team strength.&nbsp; Look for Bonucci to become the next Fabio Grosso in his time at Juventus.
If Del Neri continues his traditional formation, the midfield will see two holding and two attacking wingers.&nbsp; As mentioned, Pepe will man the right wing and replace Mauro Camoranesi, who regardless of his transfer status should be replaced by a younger player.&nbsp; Claudio Marchisio, one of the players who actually looked good in last season’s debacle, could start on the other wing, with Mohammed Sissoko in the middle.&nbsp; UPDATE – Juventus <a href="http:\/\/www.goal.com/en/news/10/italy/2010/08/19/2078378/breaking-news-cska-moscow-confirm-milos-krasic-will-join" target="_blank">added another potential starter</a> to the midfield with CSKA Moscow winger Milos Krasic.
Up front, Del Neri against Shamrock moved Pepe and attacking midfielder Davide Lanzafame (Parma) to the forward position with Amauri.&nbsp; While this could be an attacking option, I can see a rotation (assuming a 4-4-2) of Amauri, Trezeguet, and Del Piero as a potent attack.

This is, of course, assuming Diego is sent to a Bundesliga club, where he has been rumored to be going (<a href="http:\/\/soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=815305&amp;sec=transfers&amp;cc=5901&amp;cc=5901" target="_blank">or not going</a>).&nbsp; If Diego stays, the forward position has the potential to be one of the deepest in Serie A.
