<p>This week, Dutch powerhouse Ajax is signing Jordan Henderson, a former captain of Liverpool. Reports indicate the 33-year-old Englishman <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/is-amsterdam-calling-jordan-henderson-quits-saudi-arabia-20240117-WST-483806.html">inked a deal with the Eredivisie</a> side for two-and-a-half years. </p>



<p>His recent stay in Saudi Arabia will come to a swift conclusion as a result. On Thursday, Henderson flew to Amsterdam to complete the transfer paperwork and get a medical clearance.</p>



<p>The midfielder has just been at Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq for six months as of July 2022. Nevertheless, it seems as if he will be returning to European soccer with the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/eredivisie-tv-schedule/">Eredivisie</a> giants.</p>



<h2>Terrible season no problem for Henderson</h2>



<p>By acquiring a midfielder with a stellar resume, Ajax has scored a huge coup. After losing the Eredivisie championship to PSV Eindhoven last season, de Godenzonen wants to win it back this year.</p>



<p>Throughout his 12-year tenure with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/liverpool-tv-schedule/">Liverpool</a>, Henderson amassed a trophy case. It’s no secret that the veteran’s CV includes trophies from the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> and the UEFA Champions League.</p>



<p>He also established himself as a captain and leader who inspired his teammates with around 500 appearances in the Reds jersey. What is more, his extensive background and winning attitude will be a huge asset to interim manager, Jan van Halst.</p>



<p>Now that the European Championship is quickly coming, Henderson is hoping to keep his name in the mind of <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/england-national-team-tv-schedule/">England</a> manager Gareth Southgate.</p>

<h2>Al-Ettifaq left Henderson with no salary</h2>



<p>Leaving Saudi Arabia will provide the English midfielder the utmost relief. The decision was contentious and disastrous, so this is especially true in light of its aftermath.</p>



<p>Joining Al-Ettifaq in July for a major salary drew heavy criticism from many since it meant Henderson would be traveling to a nation that had a death penalty for homosexuality. In the past, the player had openly positioned himself as an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.</p>



<p>He was driven to make the transfer by a substantial salary—estimated to be about $444,000 per week. Despite this, Henderson vehemently denied it. Unfortunately, things could not have turned out worse for him.</p>



<p>He has not yet received a single cent of his hefty pay in the Saudi Pro League. According to the Telegraph, the player has postponed payments for the last six months, meaning he has not even had a fraction of his enticing $19 million annual salary.&nbsp;</p>



<p>To make matters worse, the article implies that some of the player’s associates think Henderson will never get his money. He delayed his salary for tax reasons; rumors have it that he did this to return to the UK and play for England.</p>



<p>UK law deems a person a resident for tax purposes if they spend more than 90 days in the nation. A major factor in the player’s inability to spend time back home was the restriction on his ability to travel.</p>



<p>The report mentions the player was informed he needed three weeks pro rata in the UK to be a non-resident. Since then, he has not received any payment from his time in Saudi Arabia, raising doubts about receiving it at all.</p>

Saudi nightmare: Henderson may never see Al-Ettifaq salary

Due to salary deferrals, Ajax-bound midfielder Jordan Henderson has made no money during his brief stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq.

<p>After a little under six months away from the Premier League, Jordan Henderson is considering a shocking transfer back from Saudi Arabia.</p>



<p>In July, the 33-year-old left Liverpool after 12 years to sign with Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq. The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/saudi-pro-league-executive-ronaldo-and-benzema-just-the-start-20230806-WST-448290.html">Saudi Pro League</a> club reportedly paid about $15 million to acquire his talents and experience.</p>



<p>Notwithstanding his weekly salary of $890,000, it’s believed that the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/england-national-team-tv-schedule/">England</a> international has found it difficult to adapt to life in Saudi Arabia.</p>



<p>Under the tutelage of <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/liverpool-tv-schedule/">Liverpool</a> great Steven Gerrard, Henderson has made 19 appearances for Al Ettifaq, assisting on five goals. In addition to Henderson’s issues, Gerrard has been under intense criticism from owners due to the club’s dismal record.</p>



<p>It unfortunately began in November and has continued with an eight-game losing streak. Additional evidence of discontent in the camp was Ian Foster’s resignation from his position as assistant manager in Dammam.</p>



<p>It seems like Henderson may be the next player to go. What is more, he could join Foster in his pursuit of a shocking return to the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> during the current transfer window.</p>



<h2>Al-Ettifaq’s current situation is quite terrible</h2>



<p>The Commandos are now in eighth position in the Saudi Pro League, a whopping 28 points behind Al-Hilal, who are in first place. Gerrard is under even more pressure as a result of this miserable run.</p>

<p>There was a lot of criticism and resentment when the 33-year-old left Anfield for Saudi Arabia in the summer. Due to the enormous transfer fees and salaries offered by clubs, many stars have opted to go to the Middle East.</p>

<p>However, some have speculated that Saudi Arabia is engaging in sportswashing because of its dismal human rights record. Henderson’s summer move left these organizations outraged, considering his previous vocal support for the LGBT community.</p>



<p>For members of the LGBTQ+ community, the death penalty is an additional penalty for being homosexual in this nation. Thus, Henderson has been deeply affected by the hate speech he experienced since.</p>



<h2>Henderson would have to make personal sacrifice</h2>



<p>According to further reports, the former Sunderland midfielder has informed his teammates that he is uncertain about his future. This reportedly occurred before his imminent departure on a brief vacation during the winter break.</p>



<p>It won’t be until February 15 when Al-Ettifaq visit Al-Khaleej that they return to competitive play. During the January transfer window, Henderson reportedly hopes to move, maybe on loan at first, <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2024/01/06/jordan-henderson-transfer-news-saudi-arabia-return-cost/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Telegraph</a> say.</p>



<p>However, he would have to significantly reduce his already substantial weekly salary of £350,000 in order for this to materialize. He signed a three-year deal in July, and his weekly salary is exempt from taxes.</p>



<p>His failure to remain for a minimum of two years would render the tax-free portion of the agreement null and invalid, according to that provision. The consequences of his departure this month might be devastating, costing him millions of dollars.</p>
