
<p>Lionel Messi completed his first press conference on Thursday since signing for <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/inter-miami-tv-schedule/">Inter Miami</a> back in July. The Argentine superstar covered a wide range of topics during the interview with media personnel. This included typical questions about growing <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/mls-tv-schedule/">Major League Soccer</a>, the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/leagues-cup-tv-schedule/">Leagues Cup</a> and his time at <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/psg-tv-schedule/">Paris Saint-Germain</a>. However, Messi also discussed potentially playing on artificial turf.</p>



<p>The World Cup winner proclaimed that he does not have a problem with playing on the fake surface. He also said that he has experience with artificial turf while playing as a kid. </p>



<p>“I spent my youth on artificial turf, my whole life was on that pitch,” <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/38210150/mls-poised-step-catch-european-leagues" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> Messi. “It’s been a while since I’ve played on an artificial turf, but I have no problem adapting myself again.”</p>



<h5>MLS teams have option to lay down real grass over fake turf</h5>



<p>Six of the 29 MLS clubs currently use a form of fake turf. This includes Seattle’s Lumen Field, Vancouver’s BC Place, Portland’s Providence Park, New England’s Gillette Stadium, Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium and Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The league’s commissioner, Don Garber, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/mls-clubs-may-install-natural-grass-for-messi-says-garber-20230717-WST-443783.html">previously claimed</a> that teams may opt to lay down real grass over the turf ahead of fixtures that involve Messi’s Miami.</p>

<p>However, this is just an option for each of the teams involved. Charlotte has <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/charlotte-fc-sends-messi-strong-message-on-grass-import-idea-20230721-WST-444681.html">recently stated</a> that it will not import grass for their pitch during their matchups with Miami. Messi and his new teammates currently have two away games on the schedule against teams that use artificial turf. Miami will travel to Atlanta in September before finishing their regular season at Charlotte.</p>



<h2>Miami co-owner previously avoided playing on artificial turf</h2>



<p>Several foreign stars have previously criticized the use of artificial grass in MLS. One of these players is now co-owner of Messi’s Inter Miami. David Beckham sat out of a matchup with Toronto back in 2007 because of the surface. </p>



<p>“As a professional athlete, you can’t play a game like soccer on that sort of field,” <a href="https://theathletic.com/4786428/2023/08/18/messi-mls-artificial-turf/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proclaimed</a> Beckham. “What it does to your body as a soccer player, you’re in bits for three days after that.”</p>



<p>Thierry Henry, Didier Drogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic also avoided playing on the fake surface during their time in MLS. The star trio all claimed that previous injuries, particularly knee/foot issues, prevented them from wanting to play on the artificial turf.</p>

Messi open to playing on artificial turf in MLS

Lionel Messi has proclaimed that he does not have a problem playing on artificial turf during his stay in Major League Soccer.


<p>Inter Miami’s qualification into the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/leagues-cup-tv-schedule/">Leagues Cup</a> Final against Nashville has not been kind to ticket prices. Although the World Cup winner’s appearance in the game is expected to drive up prices, they are too high. Pricing out the fans in Nashville continues the ‘pay-to-play’ nature that has plagued American soccer.</p>



<p>Understandably, it is a final. Already, that will make tickets more expensive. However, this is still an MLS game, just a cup final. It has no business being more expensive than the UEFA Champions League Final from this past season. Prices for the final between Manchester City and Inter Milan started at $75.</p>



<p>The lowest ticket available for the Leagues Cup final is $485 according to the official Leagues Cup seller Ticketmaster. That absurd price gets a middle-of-the-section ticket in the corner of the stadium. </p>

<p>For comparison, the most expensive standard admission ticket on Ticketmaster is just shy of $1,500. That’s not from a reseller, who is trying to take advantage of the Messi craze to turn his or her ticket into a profit. That’s a standard admission ticket price that’s set by Ticketmaster and MLS.</p>



<p>With the resale tickets, some of them are less expensive than what Ticketmaster is charging for standard admission. For instance, on <a href="https://vivid-seats.pxf.io/c/330866/952533/12730?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vividseats.com%2Fnashville-sc-tickets-geodis-park-8-19-2023--sports-mls%2Fproduction%2F4552465" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vivid Seats</a> (one of our advertisers), prices for one ticket start at $396.</p>



<p>Still, prior to Messi’s visit to Subaru Park in Philadelphia this week, a Leagues Cup spokesperson said these official ticket prices come based on demand and comparisons to other major sports.</p>



<p>“The prices reflect the market demand for tickets similar to playoff pricing in all major sports events,” Leagues Cup spokesperson Felipe Martinez Amaral told the <em><a href="https://www.inquirer.com/soccer/messi-union-leagues-cup-prices-tickets-mls-soccer-20230814.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Philadelphia Inquirer</a></em>. </p>



<p>Even if it is likely these clubs sell the tickets, they are making it impossible for the average fan. Paying $500 for one game is ridiculous.</p>

<p>Compare that to this past season’s UEFA Champions League Final in Istanbul between Manchester City and Inter Milan. The lowest official ticket price for that game was just $75. Of course, resellers did shoot those ticket prices up in the long run to prices comparable with this Leagues Cup Final. However, the $75 is for a similar style of ticket to the aforementioned $450 ticket at the Leagues Cup game, which is tucked away in the corner of the stadium.</p>



<p>Worse off, Leagues Cup tickets are not generally included in the clubs’ season ticket passes. These season ticket holders did have the first selection on tickets, which has already passed. </p>

<p>The worst part about the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/inter-miami-and-nashville-advance-to-leagues-cup-final-20230816-WST-450403.html">Nashville game against Inter Miami</a> is that there is an abundance of tickets still available. Looking at ticket-purchasing websites, some sections are still half empty. Compare a section in the lower bowl in the Leagues Cup Final to a regular season MLS match. To see Messi and Inter Miami, Nashville fans would have to pay just shy of <a href="https://www.ticketmaster.com/leagues-cup-nashville-sc-v-inter-nashville-tennessee-08-19-2023/event/1B005F0EB07E8955" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$861 per ticket in row X</a>. Again, that is official admission, not a reseller. On Saturday, Sep. 2, which is the club’s next home game against Charlotte FC, a ticket in row R of the same section is a cool <a href="https://vivid-seats.pxf.io/c/330866/952533/12730?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vividseats.com%2Fnashville-sc-tickets-geodis-park-9-2-2023--sports-soccer%2Fproduction%2F4245786" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$27 on Vivid Seats</a>.</p>



<p>MLS may be trying to cash in on Messi’s popularity to make more money. In doing so, it is making it impossible for average soccer fans to add to the atmosphere of the first final of what MLS calls ‘<a href="https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/leagues-cup-2023-dates-and-structure-announced" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">historic</a>.’ Unfortunately, the main part of history for many of these fans is their inability to watch in person with exorbitant entry fees.</p>

Outrageous Leagues Cup final ticket prices are bad look for MLS

Inter Miami's qualification in to the Leagues Cup final against Nashville has not been kind to ticket prices or fans in Nashville.

<p>Nearly 50 years before Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami, the world’s greatest soccer player at the time, Pele, shocked the world by coming out of retirement to sign with the North American Soccer League’s New York Cosmos. Through six matches so far, Messi has scored nine goals and helped lead Miami to the final of the Leagues Cup tournament. Yet, the youth participation it created was the seed that ultimately led to the MLS era. </p>



<p>MLS clubs now have the reach and resources to attract not just aging legends. Instead, the league can bring in global talents in their prime. The increased interest and revenue generated by Messi provide long-term benefits for continued league investment and development. <p>The clock is ticking for Inter Miami to get its new stadium in Miami ready for Lionel Messi before the World Cup star ends his contract in 2025. Named Miami Freedom Park, the construction of the new Inter Miami stadium is behind schedule. David Beckham originally wanted the 73-acre site to <a href="https://en.as.com/en/2019/06/03/soccer/1559592964_631941.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">open in 2022</a>. However, after repeated delays, the stadium is nowhere close to being done. </p>



<p>In fact, not a single shovel has been put into the ground. Instead, situated on the site of the closed Melreese Golf Club just east of the Miami International Airport, the site of Inter Miami’s future stadium is a mess. Overgrown grass and weeds obscure the former golf course, while one of the buildings is covered in grafitti.</p>



<p>That’s the least of Inter Miami’s problems. Before work can begin, the 73-acre plot of land needs to be remediated at an estimated cost of more than $35 million. Melreese Golf Course was built on top of an old incinerator ash dump. In fact, testing on the site <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/stadium-site-contamination-new-headache-for-beckham-mls-team-report-20190820-CMS-277929.html">uncovered plenty of contamination</a> including elevated arsenic levels but also barium and lead above legal limits.</p>



<p>Once the land is cleared of hazardous chemicals, work can begin to build the $1 billion stadium, hotel, office park, and commercial campus that’s planned.</p>

<h2>Construction delays put new Miami stadium timeline to feature Messi in doubt</h2>



<p>As shown in the video below from <a href="https://youtube.com/futbolmiamitv" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Futbol Miami TV</a>, no work has been done on the land. In March 2023, since Melreese Golf Club left the premises, the site has been dormant.</p>

<p>Originally, MLS intended DRV PNK Stadium to be used for two seasons while <a href="https://miamifreedompark.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Miami Freedom Park</a> was built. Inter Miami, now in season four at the Fort Lauderdale stadium, is likely to have played six full seasons at the temporary ground before the new stadium is opened.</p>



<p>In fact, based on the lack of progress to date in Miami, don’t be surprised if Miami Freedom Park doesn’t open until 2026 at the earliest. If that happens, Messi won’t open the stadium as an Inter Miami footballer. Of course, there’s always the hope that he extends his contract with MLS, but by then he’ll be 38 or 39 years old.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, Messi’s next game for Inter Miami is Saturday night in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/leagues-cup-tv-schedule/">Leagues Cup</a> final against Nashville.</p>

The Argentine legend has propelled his new club to the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/leagues-cup-tv-schedule/">Leagues Cup</a> final. However, interest in the team has also skyrocketed as well.</p>



<p>This new appeal in <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/inter-miami-tv-schedule/">Inter</a> is evident in <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/inter-miami-pricing-fans-out-of-seeing-messi-20230726-WST-445529.html">ticket prices</a> to watch the team play, as well as <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/38082893/the-messi-effect-new-miami-star-brings-big-business-mls" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">club merchandise</a> selling like hotcakes. Now, Messi is helping Inter Miami to possibly feature in the prestigious <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/copa-libertadores-tv-schedule/">Copa Libertadores</a>.</p>

<p><em>TyC Sports</em> reporter Hugo Balassone is claiming that Chiqui Tapia has invited the MLS club to play in the tournament. Tapia is currently the president of the Argentine Football Federation. Messi’s involvement in the Argentina national team is a significant reason for the move.</p>

<h2>Inter Miami would be first MLS club in Copa Libertadores</h2>



<p>The Copa Libertadores is the marquee club competition in South America. It is the Champions League for the continent. CONMEBOL organizes the annual tournament that regularly features top teams such as Independiente, Boca Juniors, River Plate, Sao Paulo, and Palmeiras.</p>



<p>Although the tournament usually solely features clubs from South America, teams from other areas have featured in the past. In fact, Mexican sides have been invited to play at the competition in recent years. Pumas, Toluca, and Pueblo all took part in the 2016 Copa Libertadores. However, none of the trio were able to advance beyond the quarterfinals of the tournament.</p>



<p>Argentina’s move to invite an MLS team to the Copa Libertadores extends CONMEBOL’s partnership with CONCACAF. The two governing bodies previously announced a “<a href="https://www.concacaf.com/news/conmebol-and-concacaf-sign-strategic-collaboration-agreement/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">strategic collaboration agreement</a>” earlier in the year. This partnership will see various CONCACAF members play in the upcoming <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/copa-america-tv-schedule/">2024 Copa America</a>. The tournament, the biggest national team competition in South America, is coming to the United States that summer.</p>

Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami invited to Copa Libertadores

MLS team Inter Miami has reportedly been invited to feature at the next Copa Libertadores, which is traditionally only South American clubs.


<p>Apple is looking to build on the Messi mania by creating a second documentary on the Inter Miami superstar. The Argentine World Cup winner is already the central focus of <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/apple-tv-announces-new-messi-docuseries-coming-soon-20230606-WST-436313.html">a four-part documentary series</a>. That one focuses on his triumph in Qatar. There is no official release date for the documentary yet.</p>



<p><em>Bloomberg</em> is reporting this new documentary series is about his move to the United States. Messi made the blockbuster move to Major League Soccer this summer after his contract expired with PSG. He elected a move to the United States over a return to Barcelona or a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia. </p>



<p>His arrival in the United States put him almost exclusively on Apple’s MLS Season Pass. Therefore, it is no surprise to see Apple and MLS building on the potential that he brings. Multiple reports have shown his arrival paid instant dividends for Apple and MLS. Even though numbers on Apple’s subscribers are kept under wraps, Messi is helping the service <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/messi-helps-mls-season-pass-achieve-viewership-record-20230727-WST-445834.html">set viewership records</a> in his inaugural season. Moreover, Apple’s MLS Season Pass is <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/mls-season-pass-nearing-1-million-subscribers-per-report-20230724-WST-444953.html">approaching one million subscribers</a>. Jorge Mas, the president of Inter Miami, said MLS Season Pass subscribers have more than doubled since Messi’s arrival.</p>

<p>It all started in Messi’s debut against Cruz Azul. Then, in the round of 16 and quarterfinals, Messi scored in each of those games.</p>



<p>Messi’s success has been crucial to both the Leagues Cup and MLS Season Pass. The further Messi advances in the competition, the more people watch. Also, Messi and Inter Miami are on the verge of clinching a spot in next season’s CONCACAF Champions Cup, a revamp of the confederation’s Champions League. A third-place finish or better is enough to get a spot in at least the competition’s first round.</p>
