For some, the country that has been the most-watched Copa America Centenario team on US television may be a surprise. It’s not, as you would expect, the United States as the host country.
Others won’t be surprised that it’s the Mexico national team that was the most popular Copa America Centenario team on US shores.
Based on our own research and the help from Sports TV Ratings, we’ve averaged the number of viewers per game across FOX Sports and Univision.
While Mexico leads the pack, some surprises include Brazil not making it into the top 10 most-watched teams. That’s partly due to their early exit in the tournament, but they also didn’t play games against high-profile teams such as Mexico, USA, Argentina, Chile or Colombia.

Meanwhile, national teams for Venezuela, Jamaica, Paraguay and Ecuador benefitted from playing teams such as Argentina, Mexico and USA respectively.

FOX Sports and Univision’s coverage of the 2016 Copa America averaged more than 4 million viewers per game, but which games were the most-watched during the entire 32 game tournament?
Based on our research plus the help of Sports TV Ratings, we’ve compiled the list of the top 32 most-watched games on US television. Not surprisingly, it was the final between Argentina and Chile that was the most-watched game with nearly 10 million viewers.

The next Copa America will be in Chile in 2015, but when the Confederation of CONMEBOL celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2016 they want to hold a special tournament and it won’t be on the South American Continent. Reports coming from Mexico and Goal are that there will be a special Copa America tournament and it will be played in the United States.
This would be the first time in the history of the tournament and in South American soccer history that this prestigious cup competition would be held outside of the ten countries that make up the confederation and to be honest many thought that this special Copa America would be held in Mexico.
But apparently with the help of brand new CONCACAF President Jeffery Webb, he has found a way to get the tournament to be staged in the United States and at the same time probably repaired any damage in the past that had been going on during the Jack Warner era.
But this news would mean that the second invited side to be a part of this special Copa America is US Soccer and I would assume the games would be held in mid June till mid July depending on when FIFA schedules Official International competition dates for the 2018 World Cup that will be held in Russia.
The USA has been invited to three Copa America’s in their history as they went down to Ecuador in 1993. Uruguay in 1995 and their most recent participation was in Venezuela during the start of Bob Bradley’s tenure in 2007. Everyone remembers the historic 1995 run that got the USA finishing in 4th place.
It started on July 8th when Eric Wynalda got a brace against Chile for the 2-1 win, but their next match was against a tough Bolivian side that had Marco Etcheverry on the squad and he scored the only goal. But the historic victory over Argentina that moved them to the Quarterfinals with goals from Frank Klopas, Alexi Lalas and Eric Wynalda for the 3-0 win.
If you thought it was big news back in the 2002 World Cup when the USA defeated Mexico in the round of sixteen, it was just as big of a victory against El Tri when both sides ended their match in a scoreless draw and a penalty shootout was going to end it.
Wynalda converted for the USA and so did Luis Garcia for Mexico to end the first round. After that it was all USA as Joe Max Moore, Paul Caligiuri and Frank Klopas converted while Carlos Hermosillo &amp; Alberto Coyote either missed or was stopped by Brad Friedel. The USA would advance to the Semi-Finals only to be stopped by Brazil and losing in the third place game against Colombia.
So I say bring the celebration over to the USA. Let us be gracious hosts to this wonderful occasion that the South American Football Confederation has bestowed upon us along with the help of CONCACAF that wants to bridge the gap within the America’s and put on a great show to celebrate the centennial of South America Football.
