Being on a budget doesn’t necessarily mean sacrificing your sports intake. Cable, satellite, and even some television streaming options, can certainly be expensive. Paying to watch your favorite soccer team play can usually cost anywhere from $50-$150 every single month depending on which league your club plays in. If a little belt-tightening is needed, there are other options to still keep up with the action on the pitch such as discovering how to listen to soccer games via radio.
Aside from watching games on TV, listening to soccer matches is also a great, and cheap, way to still experience game day. Whether it’s on the radio, websites, or smartphone apps, listening to your favorite team play can actually be free in many cases.
How to listen to soccer games via radio
Talksport currently broadcasts live matches for free from multiple European competitions across both Talksport and Talksport2 stations. Either accessing the website or their Premier League channel via TuneIn on matchdays, users can regularly listen to many different matches from Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Championship, Bundesliga, and more. Quick, easy, and no sign-up or costs are needed courtesy of the London-based company. Along with live matches, Talksport also airs sports news shows and commentary as well.
On Saturdays and Sundays, BBC World Service typically broadcasts the second half of Premier League matches for free to listeners outside the United Kingdom. You can listen live via the BBC website.
Certain teams, usually the bigger clubs, also offer free audio streams of their matches. Using their own commentators, listening to matches on club websites gives listeners sort of a hometown feel, without any possibility of bias against your favorite team. Many of these options are free as well, with only an email sign-in required.
Here in the United States, Sirius XM also has a channel specifically catered towards the beautiful game. Sirius XM FC, channel 157, airs matches from all over the world (including Major League Soccer matches), as well as plenty of talk shows and punditry from former players. The massive satellite radio company costs just $5 per month for the first year and then $17 per month afterwards.
Along with listening in your car, Sirius XM also allows for in-home listening as well. Subscribing will give you access to 325+ total channels, ad-free music, and other sports events. Sirius will also give you a free Echo Dot for signing up. Subscribers can listen at home using Google Nest, Amazon Alexa, Sonos, Roku, PS4, and Apple TV.
Not only is listening to matches a cheaper alternative to television and streaming, but it is also useful for those that happen to work during games. Many employers allow use of streaming audio/radio in the workplace but may frown upon employees watching games online. Listening to your favorite team’s matches would also be a good option for those that spend a lot of time on the road or can’t be in front of the TV on a regular basis as well.
