<h2>The upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics set to feature heavily on Peacock</h2>



<p>Along with the Premier League, NBC Sports also has exclusive rights to the 2024 Summer Olympics. Much like the English soccer division, the summer games will be spread across NBCUniversal’s current platforms, including Peacock. In fact, it was <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/olympics-on-peacock-adds-whip-around-and-multiview-features/">recently announced</a> that the Olympic games are set to feature heavily on the streaming service.</p>



<p>Sports fans can access over 5,000 hours of live coverage of the 329 events during the competitions. This extensive presentation also includes both men’s and women’s soccer at the Olympics. Peacock will have specific hubs dedicated to 40 different sports throughout the games as well. The 2024 Summer Olympics in France will start on July 26th and run until August 11th.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nwsl-tv-schedule-and-streaming-links/">National Women’s Soccer League</a> (NWSL) announced a summer tournament where each team will play against select sides from the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/liga-mx-femenil-tv-and-streaming-schedule/">Liga MX Femenil</a>. That is the top women’s league in Mexico. In total, there will be 20 teams involved, and they will play a total of 33 games as part of this competition. The 20 teams split into five groups of four. Each group has three NWSL teams and one Liga MX Femenil team. There is one exception that has two NWSL teams and two Liga MX Femenil teams. </p>



<p>Each side will play the other three teams in their group. Then, the top four teams from across the competition will advance to a four-team semifinal phase. Further details on the competition rules and scheduling will come at a later date. For now, NWSL and Liga MX Femenil announced the tournament will start on July 19. Each team’s three group-stage games happen in late July, as the semifinal round will be the week of Aug. 4. However, the Final will not happen for some time. The Championship match for this competition is the weekend of Oct. 25 to 27.</p>



<p>This tournament is similar to the Leagues Cup between Major League Soccer and Liga MX. However, the main difference is that the Leagues Cup features every team in Major League Soccer <em>and </em>Liga MX. While this new tournament has every NWSL team, there are only six competitors from Liga MX Femenil. That is just one-third of the teams in Mexico’s top women’s division. </p>



<p>That said, the Summer Cup will play prominently in the United States. There is one game on Mexican soil, which is fittingly the group-stage game involving two Mexican clubs. The other contests are spread across NWSL stadiums. There is no plan in place for where the semifinals or final would be yet. </p>



<h2>Tournament brings NWSL and Liga MX Femenil together</h2>



<p>This competition is a major piece of growth for both the NWSL and Liga MX Femenil. With the introduction of the <a href="https://www.concacaf.com/news/concacaf-launches-region-s-first-official-women-s-continental-club-competition-with-annual-w-champions-cup/">CONCACAF Women’s Champions Cup</a>, North America and the Caribbean now has its equivalent to the UEFA Women’s Champions League. The addition of the Summer Cup between NWSL and the Liga MX Femenil just takes it a step further.</p>

NWSL and Liga MX Femenil to play summer tournament in 2024

The NWSL announced a summer tournament where each team will play against select sides from the Liga MX Femenil.

<p>The 2024 <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nwsl-tv-schedule-and-streaming-links/">National Women’s Soccer League</a> (NWSL) kicked off Friday night as <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/san-diego-wave-tv-schedule/">San Diego Wave FC</a> faced <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/gotham-fc-tv-schedule/">NJ/NY Gotham FC</a> in New Jersey. The two teams were pitted against each other in the newly reformatted UKG NWSL Challenge Cup. While the competition was previously a league cup involving all of the top flight teams, organizers recently altered the contest to involve just two clubs.</p>



<p>Gotham FC qualified for the 2024 NWSL Challenge Cup after being crowned league champions last season. Wave FC, on the other hand, previously won the 2023 NWSL Shield. The revised competition is now essentially a super cup match, similar to England’s Community Shield or Spain’s Supercopa.</p>



<h2>Alex Morgan heads home the winning goal for San Diego late in the NWSL Challenge Cup final</h2>



<p>Both clubs stuck to their specific defensive plans throughout the match and limited scoring opportunities for their opponents. As a result, there was only one goal recorded in the game. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/uswnt-tv-schedule/">United States women’s national team</a> star Alex Morgan netted the game-winning goal in the 88th minute for San Diego.</p>



<p>The legendary American forward only entered the fray as a second-half substitute. Teammate Savannah McCaskill picked out Morgan with a perfectly placed corner kick in front of the Gotham goal. Morgan easily headed the ball beyond the diving goalkeeper and into the bottom corner of the net. It was her 28th goal in just 46 total matches with San Diego.</p>

<p>Due to scoring the lone goal in the game, Morgan was awarded as the 2024 UKG NWSL Challenge Cup Most Valuable Player. The striker collected a $2,000 bonus for netting the award. After the match, Morgan told reporters that the pass was so perfect that she had to score the goal. “The ball came straight to me, so I knew that I couldn’t mess it up,” <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/2024/mar/16/nwsl-challenge-cup-san-diego-wave-gotham-fc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Morgan.</p>



<p>UKG, an American tech company, also provided each player on the two rosters with additioanl prize money. Gotham players received $2,200 each, while the winning San Diego squad earned $3,500 each for their triumph.</p>



<h2>Wave FC set for ownership change as billionaire announces sale</h2>



<p>San Diego’s victory came on the same day as the current club owner, Ron Burkle, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/nwsl-side-wave-fc-set-to-be-sold-for-league-record-113-million/">announced</a> that he was selling the team. The billionaire previously helped create the club in 2021 by paying a $2 million expansion fee. Despite just three years since the move, Burkle is now selling his club for a total price of $113 million. It is the most expensive deal in NWSL history.</p>



<p>NWSL’s regular season is set to start on Saturday, March 16th. Kansas City Current will host Portland Thorns in the opening match of the 2024 campaign. Three other matches are also scheduled for Saturday as well, before two games are set to be played the following day.</p>



<p>Both Challenge Cup clubs will not start their regular seasons until the following week. San Diego is set to host the Current on Saturday, March 23rd. Gotham FC, on the other hand, will face Portland in Oregon on Sunday, March 24th. These two matchups are set to be broadcasted on ION and ESPN2 respectively.</p>

San Diego wins 2024 NWSL Challenge Cup thanks to late Morgan goal

USWNT star Alex Morgan helped San Diego Wave FC narrowly edge NJ/NY Gotham FC on Friday night to win the 2024 NWSL Challenge Cup.

<p>San Diego Wave FC owner Ron Burkle has announced that he reached a sale of the side. The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nwsl-tv-schedule-and-streaming-links/">National Women’s Soccer League</a> (NWSL) side only launched in the summer of 2021. After quickly creating the team, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/san-diego-wave-tv-schedule/">Wave FC</a> began league play in the spring of 2022.</p>



<p>Despite Burkle only owning the club for less than three years, the billionaire is set to earn quite a return on his investment. Burkle previously paid a $2 million NWSL expansion fee when creating the club in 2021. Nevertheless, <em>Sportico</em> is reporting that the Levine Leichtman family will pay around $113 million to completely take over the team.</p>



<p>The deal, however, splits up into two separate payments. The news outlet claims that the new ownership will now first pay $35 million for 35% of the club. Then, the family will purchase the remaining 65% of the Wave following the 2024 season. This second payment is expected to be $78 million.</p>



<p>“We are proud of the unprecedented success we have had as an expansion team and I am confident that [the Levine Leichtman] family’s investment will contribute to the growth of our team and the San Diego community,” Burkle recently told <em><a href="https://www.sportico.com/business/team-sales/2024/burkle-sell-san-diego-wave-113-million-1234770859/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sportico</a></em>.</p>



<h2>San Diego Wave sale smashes previous NWSL record fee for club</h2>



<p>The massive $113 million deal is set to become the most expensive agreement involving an NWSL club. RAJ Sports previously held the record in the league when they brought the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/portland-thorns-tv-schedule/">Portland Thorns</a> earlier this year. The deal to purchase the Pacific Northwest team was valued at $63 million.</p>

<p>While the Wave is a relatively new club, they have an impressive record in NWSL play. The Californian side finished third in the inaugural campaign and made it to the semifinals of the 2022 playoffs. They then finished atop the regular season table in their second season in the division. The Wave is currently led by <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/uswnt-tv-schedule/">USWNT</a> superstar Alex Morgan.</p>



<p>“We are excited to join forces with San Diego Wave FC and help build upon the impressive foundation established by Ron Burkle,” <a href="https://www.sportico.com/business/team-sales/2024/burkle-sell-san-diego-wave-113-million-1234770859/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> new owner Lauren Leichtman. “This investment aligns with our values and vision for supporting initiatives that empower women and foster opportunities for aspiring female athletes.”</p>



<p>According to sources at the aforementioned news source, the sale of the club has received league approval. NWSL commissioner has already made an official statement on the agreement. “We’re thrilled to welcome the Levine Leichtman family to the ownership group of the San Diego Wave,” <a href="https://www.sportico.com/business/team-sales/2024/burkle-sell-san-diego-wave-113-million-1234770859/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Berman.</p>



<h2>Agreement in place ahead of 2024 season opener</h2>



<p>The deal comes just days before the start of the 2024 NWSL season. The Thorns and KC Current kick off the campaign on Saturday, March 16th. However, the Wave will feature in the Challenge Cup the prior day. The fixture pits the NWSL championship winner (<a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/gotham-fc-tv-schedule/">NY/NJ Gotham</a>) against the club with the best record of the 2023 regular season (Wave).</p>



<p>NWSL officials <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/nwsl-kicks-off-new-era-aboard-a-landmark-broadcast-deal/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">previously announced</a> a huge new broadcasting deal with a plethora of partners. The four-year deal, which nets the league $10 million per season, is set to be aired on Paramount+, ESPN+, ABC, the ION Network, and Amazon Prime Video. The division’s previous media rights deal was only worth $1.5 million each year.</p>

San Diego Wave FC owner Ron Burkle has announced that he reached a sale of the side for a record fee in women's soccer.

<p>The 2024 NWSL season starts on Friday, March 15, to welcome a <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/nwsl-announces-start-of-landmark-2024-tv-schedule-20240126-WST-485665.html">landmark broadcast deal</a> for the league, and soccer, in the United States. The deal spreads the league across <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/new-details-nwsl-tv-deal-with-cbs-espn-amazon-scripps-20231018-WST-462761.html#comments-462761-containter">four providers</a>, and it brings a massive revenue increase for the top women’s division in the United States. NWSL’s new four-year deal pockets the league $10 million per season. The previous deal with CBS and <a href="https://paramountplus.qflm.net/c/330866/1007330/3065" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow">Paramount+</a> only provided the league with $1.5 million per season. </p>



<p>The massive revenue increase speaks to the growing popularity of women’s soccer. That not only applies to the United States, even if the NWSL deal is strictly for American audiences. Women’s soccer has a blooming popularity and demand among viewers. The deal with various broadcasters and streaming partners only validates the league’s success as it enters season No. 12.</p>



<p>Among the immediate concerns for NWSL fans is the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/nwsl-tv-deal-boosts-revenue-but-makes-it-harder-to-find-games-20231109-WST-468746.html#comments-468746-containter">widespread nature of the league</a>. In matchday one on the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nwsl-tv-schedule-and-streaming-links/">NWSL TV schedule</a>, for example, games are available on four platforms. The opening match is airing on Amazon Prime Video. Then, on Saturday, ABC and <a href="https://go.web.plus.espn.com/mwebq" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow">ESPN+</a> are airing the game between the Kansas City Current and the Portland Thorns. Additionally, Saturday has the debut of NWSL+, the free streaming service that is airing more than 70 live matches and replays of NWSL games. Rounding out the weekend’s action are two games on ION from the Scripps family of channels. </p>



<p>Each of these platforms wanting a piece of the NWSL broadcast deal is a positive sign for the league. Paramount+ and CBS <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/nwsl-championship-tv-ratings-are-a-record-breaker-20221102-WST-406608.html">did well with the league</a>. For example, the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/nwsl-championship-draws-800k-viewers-on-cbs-20231114-WST-469992.html">2023 NWSL Championship pulled in over 800,000 viewers</a> on the linear CBS channel. CBS will have more opportunities for games, including the 2024 NWSL Championship. Now, it shares games with other platforms. </p>



<h2>NWSL broadcast deal has inherent risks</h2>



<p>This upcoming broadcast deal, and the viewership records set last season, benefited from the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Despite a historically poor performance from the USWNT in that competition, the tournament always drives support for women’s soccer in the United States. That helps explain both the length of the new deal and the uptick in rights fees. In the fourth year of this agreement, NWSL will look to make a new broadcast deal.</p>

Previously, fans knew they had to look at one spot for the majority of NWSL games. Paramount+ had most games and the simulcasts of those on CBS. Any other games would be on the CBS Sports Network. That potential difference is still there, but there are far more variables.</p>



<p>Before games have even kicked off, fans are expressing concerns about not knowing where games are. Additionally, the cost of having all these services quickly stacks up. To watch every game of the NWSL season, fans need to pay for Amazon Prime Video, ESPN+, Paramount+ and some form of a TV subscription to access the Ion Network. </p>



<p>Once the season gets rolling, the league and its fans may develop more of a rhythm as to where to find games. If that can be the case, the new NWSL broadcast deal can be pivotal to further develop women’s soccer in the United States and around the globe. </p>

The 2024 NWSL season starts on Friday, March 15, to welcome a landmark broadcast deal for the league, and soccer, in the United States.

<p>The USA Women’s National Team slugged out a 1-0 win over Brazil in the W Gold Cup Final on Sunday night. Lindsey Horan’s goal in first-half stoppage time ensured the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/uswnt-tv-schedule/">USWNT</a> won the inaugural tournament. The game at Snapdragon Stadium welcomed 31,528 fans, which was the largest crowd in the United States for a women’s event hosted by CONCACAF. The trophy ensures the United States remains atop the women’s national teams in the Americas after a spell of disappointing results. It is also the latest trophy after the USWNT’s earliest exit in Women’s World Cup history in the summer of 2023. </p>



<p>Brazil and the USWNT played a physical first half, with fouls rampant on both sides. Neither side delivered an overly impressive first half in terms of chances. Yet, the USWNT did enough to ensure it went into the halftime break with the lead. Emily Fox had the ball on the right side of the field. A lofted cross from 30 yards away reached a dangerous area on the far corner of the six-yard box. Lindsey Horan, serving as the USWNT’s captain, <a href="https://twitter.com/AttackingThird/status/1766993886272966988" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rose among the Brazilian defenders</a>. She nodded the ball against the face of the goal. Brazil goalkeeper Luciana was helpless as the ball nestled into the corner of the goal.</p>



<p>Lynn Williams thought she doubled the USWNT’s lead in the second half. After 79 minutes, the substitute had the ball in the back of the net. However, she was offside on the original pass that played her in alone. As a result, Brazil remained behind by a single goal.</p>



<p>Yet, the stout USWNT defense had a sensational evening. Naomi Girma and Tierna Davidson anchored the defense as center-backs. As a result, the Americans did not allow a single shot on target from Brazil for the entire game. Despite 11 efforts from Brazil, Alyssa Naeher did not need to perform heroics <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/usa-advances-to-w-gold-cup-final-after-rain-soaked-penalty-win/">like she did in the semifinal</a>. </p>

<h2>W Gold Cup win over Brazil gives USA another trophy</h2>



<p>This win returns the USWNT to a familiar spot: lifting trophies after finals against top opposition. For a brief period, critics pointed to recent hiccups that past USWNT teams would never succumb to. For example, the Women’s World Cup exit and the recent loss to Mexico in this W Gold Cup raised question marks. Regardless of all that, the United States claimed its 15th title in women’s CONCACAF events. </p>



<p>The success also sets the tone for when Emma Hayes shows up as the head coach in May of this year. The current Chelsea FC Women’s side boss will have massive expectations when she leads the Stars and Stripes from the bench. </p>



<h2>Tournament awards</h2>



<p>Jaedyn Shaw, the forward who scored four goals for the USWNT in this competition, won the Golden Ball as the <a href="https://twitter.com/AttackingThird/status/1767041076605391294" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tournament’s best player</a>. Also, Alyssa Naeher, the hero of the semifinal shootout win against Canada, won the Golden Glove. The United States will not reconvene as a team for one month. It is playing in the SheBelieves Cup on April 6. Twila Kilgore will lead the United States against Japan in the semifinal game. Then, the USWNT could face Brazil in the final in a rematch of the W Gold Cup Final. </p>

<p>The USA <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/uswnt-tv-schedule/">Women’s National Team</a> punched a ticket to the inaugural W Gold Cup Final on Wednesday night. A rain-soaked pitch at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, CA, was the controversial venue. An evening deluge during the other semifinal between Mexico and Brazil flooded the field. The game went on, and that impacted how the game played out. </p>



<p>With the ground effectively underwater, it was hard for either team to get any positive movement. At times, both Canada and the USWNT would flick the ball up to themselves and clear it just to get more distance on the attempt. Jaedyn Shaw scored her team-leading fourth goal in the CONCACAF W Gold Cup to open the scoring after 20 minutes. Canada center-back Vanessa Gilles went to make a routine pass back to her goalkeeper. The ball caught a puddle and stopped in its tracks. Shaw, pursuing the Canadian back line, suddenly had a free kick in open play, and <a href="https://twitter.com/AttackingThird/status/1765583240113336694" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">she tucked her shot</a> into the Canadian net. </p>



<p>With so much water on the field, neither team generated strong chances. The two teams each had just four shots through 120 minutes. Yet, Canada was able to bury one of those opportunities to force extra time. In the 82nd minute, Jordyn Huitema was on the end of a rare strong move going forward by the Canadians. Huitema’s strong header went back across the face of the goal, giving Alyssa Naeher no chance in the USWNT’s net. That forced extra time, which was the second game to go beyond the 90 for Canada. </p>



<h2>Alyssa Naeher the hero again for the USWNT</h2>



<p>Sophia Smith found the net in the 99th minute of the game. Once again, the Americans took advantage of the wet conditions. A run behind the lines from Smith benefitted from the ball abruptly stopping in its place. Alone on goal, Smith powered the ball into the back of the net to restore the Americans’ lead. That lead would last until the seventh minute of stoppage time in extra time.</p>

<p>In the 121st minute, Naeher collided with Gilles on a lofted pass. Gilles got to the ball before the USWNT’s goalkeeper. A VAR review determined Naeher committed a foul, and Canada had a penalty to send the game to decisive spot kicks. Adriana Leon converted the penalty to force a shootout.</p>



<p>Naeher righted any wrongs from giving away the late penalty by saving three of Canada’s attempts. Even though Korbin Albert failed to score for the USWNT, three conversions from the USWNT were enough. One of those was from Naeher, who converted a spot kick after saving two attempts from Canada. It was the goalkeeper’s second strong performance after her player-of-the-game showing in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/uswnt-bounces-back-in-w-gold-cup-faces-canada-in-semifinal-20240304-WST-492893.html">quarterfinal against Colombia</a>. That sent the USWNT through to the W Gold Cup Final against Brazil.</p>



<h2>Familiar rival for USA in CONCACAF W Gold Cup Final</h2>



<p>With the win, the United States will have the chance to compete for a trophy. The game against Brazil is also in San Diego at Snapdragon Stadium. USA advances to W Gold Cup Final after rain-soaked penalty win

The USA Women's National Team punched a ticket to the inaugural W Gold Cup Final on Wednesday night on a soaked pitch against Canada.

<p>Arsenal Women have recorded an average attendance of just under 35,000 fans in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-super-league-tv-schedule/">Women’s Super League</a> play this season. The impressive number is aided by the club’s decision to play select home matches at Emirates Stadium. Typically reserved for the men’s team, the massive arena holds around 60,000 people on matchdays. </p>



<p>Historically, the women’s team plays their games at nearby Meadow Park. It is currently the home stadium for National League side Borehamwood FC. In a distinct difference compared to the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a> arena, Meadow Park has a max capacity of about 4,000 fans.</p>



<p>As a result of moving several matches to The Emirates, Arsenal Women have now averaged more fans in the stands than half of all <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> clubs. The north London team has played five of their eight home league games this season at the bigger stadium. A recent <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/39664597/average-arsenal-wsl-crowd-bigger-10-premier-league-clubs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a> shows that ticket sales in these matches have experienced a 63% increase compared to the last campaign.</p>



<h2>Arsenal Women recently broke a WSL attendance record</h2>



<p>Arsenal Women most recently played bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur in front of a sold-out crowd at the weekend. The Gunners grabbed all three points in the match thanks to a lone second-half goal by Beath Mead. It was the club’s second consecutive sell-out at the huge arena. Arsenal also previously topped Manchester United’s women’s team 3-1 back on February 17th. This particular game set a new WSL attendance record of 60,160 total fans.</p>



<p>“I was thinking about a quote from Dennis Bergkamp when he said you don’t support a team only for a player, or only for history, or only for trophies, you go and support a team because that’s where you found an environment where you think you belong,” Arsenal Women manager Jonas Eidevall said after the recent win over Spurs.</p>

<h2>Other women’s teams have opted to play games at main stadium</h2>



<p>Although the women’s team is playing more matches at a much larger stadium, this fact does not necessarily tell the whole story. Fans still have to come out and purchase tickets for these games at bigger venues. While Arsenal can fill their main stadium for women’s games, other teams have not been so lucky.</p>



<p>Spurs, Chelsea, and Liverpool have all recently hosted WSL matches at their men’s arena. Nevertheless, none of these teams have been able to even come close to selling out the stadiums. Chelsea hosted Spurs at Stamford Bridge to open the 2023/24 campaign back in October. Despite being the top women’s team in the country, the Blues sold less than 15,000 tickets. The historic west London stadium has a maximum capacity of 40,000 people</p>



<p>Liverpool Women played their Merseyside Derby with Everton in front of 23,088 fans as well. Spurs Women then beat Arsenal 1-0 in front of just over 19,000 people at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in December. Both of these huge arenas have more than 60,000 seats.</p>
