<p><a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/bayern-munich-tv-schedule/">Bayern Munich</a> certainly made their opening league game challenging. The German giants were ultimately able to weather a second-half VFL Wolfsburg storm and achieve the win.</p>



<p>Bayern have their forward players to thank for being able to leave Wolfsburg with three points. Bayern controlled much of the first half and earned a well-worked opening goal from <a href="https://fcbayern.com/en/teams/first-team/jamal-musiala">Jamal Musiala</a>. Sacha Boey was able to use his athleticism at right-back to dominate the right channel and deliver a peach of a ball into Musiala’s path for a tap-in.</p>



<p>Even though Bayern earned an early lead, the forward players missed several chances created. Segre Gnabry in particular had two good chances in the first half which he squandered. Harry Kane whacked a shot into Kamil Grabara’s face from close range. The hard work for Grabara continued as he had to save a Joshua Kimmich header from close range too.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/bundesliga-tv-schedule/">Bundesliga</a> debutant Michael Olise acquitted himself admirably in the first half, creating five chances. The sense seemed that Wolfsburg would retain a chance if they made it to halftime only a goal down. That sense turned out to be correct.</p>



<h2>Wolfsburg were rewarded for their resilience against Bayern</h2>

<p>A rapid start from Wolfsburg and a real lack of concentration from Bayern resulted in the concession of a penalty. Lovro Majer confidently slotted the penalty away and this bolstered Wolfburg’s presence in the game. The goal was the catalyst Wolfsburg needed to play with more conviction.</p>



<p>The increase in stadium noise seemed to be affecting Kim Min-Jae. Patrick Wimmer caught Min-Jae on the ball and was able to set up Majer for his brace. This was Wolfsburg’s second goal in eight minutes and it represented a very obvious momentum swing. Wolfsburg was using the crowd and Bayern at this moment in time was drowning.</p>



<h2>Cooler heads prevailed and goals for Bayern followed</h2>

<p>It became apparent very quickly that Bayern needed cooler heads to steer them back on course. Vincent Kompany subbing on Thomas Muller made perfect sense for this situation. The Muller inclusion immediately bore fruit as he thought he had scored a goal with his first touch. The Bayern equalizer turned out to be a Jakub Kamininski own goal in which the ball had crossed the line before Muller touched it.</p>



<p>Muller’s impact was felt regardless, not just through his experience and leadership but also his quality on the ball. Kompany made an informed decision to move Musiala deeper and situate Muller in the ’10’ position. Musiala’s imperious dribbling meant that Bayern could cut through the Wolfsburg midfield with more efficiency.</p>



<p>Muller’s positioning in the middle of the final third was instrumental in Bayern’s game-winning goal. Muller received the ball on the half-turn, simultaneously shrugging his marker to the side. He then quickly released the ball to Kane, who then set up Gnabry for a clinical finish into the far corner.</p>



<p>This game was a textbook example of how beneficial it can be to possess dangerous attacking spoils. Though Wolfsburg arguably deserved a point from this game, they did not have Bayern’s attacking quality. Kompany’s attackers proved their reliability today.</p>

<p>Monday’s Arsenal-Wolfsburg <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/womens-champions-league-tv-schedule/">Women’s Champions League</a> clash at the Emirates was a record-setting affair. A sold-out crowd of 60,063 fans in north London delivered a rousing atmosphere for the match. This game had no less ambience than a men’s Arsenal home semifinal would have, which was just wonderful to see. </p>



<p>It is, to date, the largest women’s club match attendance for a game in England. But beyond the terrific atmosphere, there was the game itself.</p>



<h4>An even contest</h4>



<p>After a 2-2 draw in the first leg at the Volkswagen Arena on April 23rd, everything was on the line in today’s second tilt. In the end it would take 120 minutes to decide a winner in what turned out to be an evenly-contested match.   </p>



<p>The drama started early, as just minutes into the action an apparent handball penalty for Wolfsburg was denied due to offsides after VAR review. In the 11th minute, Arsenal grabbed the lead on a great individual effort. Stina Blackstenius powered her way past both the final defender and the goalkeeper, firing in the first goal of the match.</p>



<p>For awhile the match settled down, but just before halftime things livened up. In the 41st minute, Wolfsburg’s Jill Roord showed a brilliant bit of control from the top of the box, hitting a bouncing shot on the volley past Manuela Zinsberger to tie things up. Sveindís Jónsdóttir nearly put Wolfsburg ahead in first-half stoppage time, making an outstanding run and blasting a close range shot that was saved by Zinsberger. Alas, things would stand 3-3 on aggregate heading into the final 45′. </p>

<p>It looked as if Blackstenius had put the Gunners ahead just one minute into the second half, but VAR ruled the (otherwise outstanding) play narrowly offsides.</p>



<p>At the 58′ mark Alexandra Popp flicked in a header at the near post off a corner to silence the home crowd and put Wolfsburg up 3-4. Ten minutes later Svenja Huth had a clear chance to perhaps put things out of reach, but missed wide on a shot from about 10 yards out.</p>



<p>The missed opportunity was costly, as Arsenal’s Jen Beattie leveled the proceedings with a clinical header in the 75th minute. The goal would stand, but a VAR review dampened the energy of the moment. </p>



<h4>Extra time drama</h4>



<p>Seven minutes of stoppage time began with the game still knotted at 2-2(4-4). Seven minutes of stoppage time ended the same way, leading into the pressure of extra time.  </p>



<p>The 98th minute saw a terrific point-blank kick save from Wolfsburg’s Merle Frohms to keep things level. The first 15 minutes would elapse without either side making breakthrough. A bit of a broken play at 112′ gave Wolfsburg a golden chance, but resulting shot was wide of the mark. A few minutes later Arsenal were inches from snatching the lead. A lofted cross floated to the back post and found the woodwork, bouncing away and ending the threat.</p>



<p>In the 119th minute, Pauline Brenner tapped a perfectly-placed cross into an empty net to stun the Emirates and put Wolfsburg ahead in the dying moments. The record crowd rallied behind the home side as added time began, hoping to inspire Arsenal to an equalizer. </p>



<p>But in the end, it was not to be for the London faithful. The Gunners now look to the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/womens-super-league-tv-schedule/">Super League</a> campaign, where they have a chance to challenge for the title. </p>



<p>Wolfsburg now move on to their sixth Champions League final, looking to secure their third continental title. They will travel to the Netherlands to face 2021 winners FC Barcelona at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven on June 3rd. </p>

<h5>Group A</h5>



<p>Group A of the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/womens-champions-league-tv-schedule/?adlt=strict&amp;toWww=1&amp;redig=8C82580776CB429984BA32396DAE9676">Women’s Champions League</a> features three dangerous sides in Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid. The group produced some very interesting matches and included some very exciting story lines.</p>



<p><strong>Chelsea</strong>, with thirteen points in five matches, are wreaking havoc on both the Women’s Super League and the Champions League. They are first in the table with 27 points in 10 games. </p>



<p>Chelsea lead the Super League in goals scored, which seems like an easy task with human highlight reel Sam Kerr leading the Blues’ attack. They have not lost a game in the Champions League, only drawing with Real away from home.</p>



<p><strong>PSG</strong>, with ten points, has not been much worse than their London-based counterparts. They lead Division 1 Feminine, one point ahead of reigning European champions Lyon. In the Champions League, they have looked strong. Yet, they did lose 1-0 to Chelsea and drew with Real.</p>



<p><strong>Real Madrid</strong>, already mathematically eliminated from the group stage with their five points, has not been bad.  Yet their offense cost them crucial games. They have only scored four goals in five total matches and have lost some very winnable games. They have performed well in Liga F, getting 28 points in just eleven matches.</p>

<p>The fourth team in the group, Albanian side <strong>Vllaznia</strong>, has a solid argument to be the worst team in the group stage. They are the only team to not score so far in the Champions League, and they have given up a whopping 23 goals in their time  at the group stage. Vllaznia are undefeated in the Albanian Women’s National Championship, but that success has not transferred over on the continental stage.</p>



<h5>Group B</h5>



<p>A dangerous Wolfsburg side looking to avenge their semi-final exit in last year’s Champions League looks better than ever. They lead Group B with eleven points, followed by Roma with ten, St. Polten with four, and Slavia Prague with two.</p>



<p><strong>Wolfsburg</strong> lead Frauen-Bundesliga, with 30 points in 10 games. They have good wins like their 2-1 victory over Bayern and a 5-0 win over Frankfurt. They are dominant in Germany, but shaky in Europe. Although they lead their group, they have drawn with bottom-dwellers Slavia Prague and with their fierce Italian rivals Roma.</p>



<p><strong>Roma</strong> is also doing pretty well. They lead Serie A, with Juve trailing by three points. Yet they have yet to unleash their dominant side in the group stage. At times, they have conceded lots of goals, but they have also shown some of their offensive firepowers. Roma has already secured automatic qualification, but they could be in for an early exit with their recent form.</p>

<p>Austrian champions <strong>St. Poiten</strong> launched a serious campaign this season, but no one really expected them to do well. St. Poiten’s only win came from a stoppage-time winner against Slavia Prague, and they drew the Czech side again. <strong>Slavia Prague</strong> themselves had two draws; one from St. Poiten, and the other, surprisingly, from title contenders Wolfsburg. </p>



<p>Wolfsburg and Roma have already qualified for the quarter-finals. A win against St. Poiten in December 22 would give the Germans first place. Roma faces a Slavia Prague side searching for its first Champions League win in 2022.</p>



<h5>Group C</h5>



<p>Unlike the other three groups, Group C is wide open. With Arsenal, reigning champions Lyon, and Juventus all vying for two spots in the Champions League, the final matchday will be crucial to each team’s season.</p>



<p><strong>Arsenal </strong>WFC, who landed just one point away from winning the Women’s Super League last season, have lost just once in this season’s edition. They look really strong this season, leading the league in goals allowed(5). Yet they’ve met their match in the Champions League. They recently lost a match that could have given them an automatic bid to the knockout round, and Arsenal has not exuded the sheer dominance you need to make a serious run into the finals. Some of the better games of their season were their 5-1 win over Lyon and 4-0 win over their hated rivals Spurs. </p>

<p>Similar to the Gunners, <strong>Lyon </strong>is uncharacteristically weak this season. The reigning European champions fell hard in their opening game in the Champions League and have struggled to find their footing. They have lost a game and drawn a game in France’s Division 1 Feminine, coming in at second place at the halfway point of the season.</p>



<p><strong>Juventus </strong>has not had its best season in 2022. Suffering two draws and a loss in the highly competitive Group C, they are also lacking in Italy. In Serie A, <a href="https:\/\/www.forbes.com/sites/danieleproch/2021/02/16/womens-serie-a-to-kick-off-italys-first-ever-professional-sports-league-for-female-athletes-in-2022/?adlt=strict&amp;toWww=1&amp;redig=21A9E84315A54A7B9079818390B31F71&amp;sh=552843773b35" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">which just turned professional six months ago</a>, Juventus has drawn three games and lost one.</p>



<p>Despite coming in first in the Swiss Women’s Super League last season, <strong>Zurich </strong>has flopped this season. They have only scored one goal in five Champions League games, and have failed to get a single point through day five. In Switzerland, the side has lost two games in eight games, putting them in second.</p>



<p>Zurich is only playing for pride going into the last matchday on December 21, as they are mathematically eliminated. They play Arsenal, who has already qualified for the knockout round. Juventus, who plays Lyon away from home, has to win to move on</p>



<h5>Group D</h5>



<p>Group D, consisting of Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Benfica, and Rosengard, is already decided. Both Barca and Bayern have 12 points, while Benfica has six Rosengard has none. Barca and Bayern have automatically secured qualification to the quarter-finals going into matchday six.</p>



<p><strong>Barca</strong>, missing key players from last season like Jennifer Hermoso and Leila Ouahabi, is having a splendid start to the 2022-2023 season. They have won all twelve of their Liga F matches, giving them a large eight-point lead. They’ve also established their dominance with large wins over Benfica and Rosengard. Their only loss of the season came against a much-improved Bayern team, and their slip-up looks like an isolated incident so far.</p>

<p><strong>Bayern </strong>has had a very good start to the season as well. They are second in the Frauen-Bundesliga, with just one game drawn and one game lost. They also advanced to the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal, making their mark with two big seven-goal wins against weaker teams.</p>



<p><strong>Rosengard </strong>ended its dominant domestic season with a league title, but it’s been lacking continentally. It has not won any games so far in the Champions League. <strong>Benfica</strong>, reigning champions of Portugal’s Liga BPI, have gone undefeated in their league so far, but also have not succeeded against the powerhouse of Group D.</p>



<p>Bayern plays Rosengard and Barca plays Benfica on December 21. Bayern will likely need a better result in their match than Barca due to the goal difference between them. </p>



<p>As it stands, Barca is set to go through as group winners; not shocking, considering their near-perfect season in the 2021-22 season.</p>
