Former England, Barcelona, and Tottenham manager Terry Venables passed away at the age of 80 after a protracted illness.



Confirming the news, his family published a statement on Sunday afternoon reading: “We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness. 



We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who we were so lucky to have had in our lives.”



<h2>What was Terry Venables like as a player?</h2>



Throughout his career in soccer, Terry Venables was an outstanding player, coach, and manager. 



His professional career included almost 500 games for clubs like Crystal Palace, QPR, Chelsea, and <a href="https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/2023/november/obituary-terry-venables/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tottenham</a>, earning two international caps for England.



During his tenure at Spurs, he achieved fame for his playing and managerial accomplishments, including the FA Cup in 1967 as a player and 1991 as a manager. But his real impact came from his time spent coaching.



Among his managerial credits are the 1990-91 FA Cup triumphs with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/tottenham-tv-schedule/">Tottenham</a> and coaching Crystal Palace, QPR, Leeds United, Middlesbrough, and Barcelona in La Liga.



He started managing in 1976 with Crystal Palace and returned to Loftus Road four years later. He elevated the Eagles to the Premier League from the Third Division and then guided the Hoops to the FA Cup final in 1982.



His first big trophy came in 1985 and 1986 with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/barcelona-tv-schedule/">Barcelona</a>, when he managed the Spanish team to La Liga and the Copa de Liga, respectively. In fact, while leading the Blaugrana, Venables became known as ‘El Tel’. &nbsp;



Venables also brought Mark Hughes, a Welsh international, and Gary Lineker, an English striker, to Camp Nou.



When Venables took over as coach, the team narrowly lost the 1986 European Cup final against Steaua Bucharest.



After returning to Spurs the following year, he guided the team to the FA Cup triumph described before.

<h2>What was Terry Venables like as a manager?</h2>



In 1994, he succeeded Graham Taylor as <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/england-national-team-tv-schedule/">England</a> manager. Two years later, he led the Three Lions to a height in their history as they advanced to the semi-finals of the European championships on home turf. 



Unfortunately, they were defeated by Germany on penalties.



That setback led to his being convinced to go back to Australia, where he had a short stint playing with Canterbury-Marrickville Olympic at the twilight of his career.



As manager, the expectation was that he could finally make it reach the World Cup finals after a twenty-four-year absence.



The Socceroos were impressive in high-profile friendlies under Venables’s guidance, thanks to a youthful and promising roster that included Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka, Mark Bosnich, Robbie Slater, John Aloisi, and Aurelio Vidmar. For a chance to face Iran in a play-off, they cruised through Oceania qualification.



In front of 129,000 spectators in Tehran, the opening leg finished in a 1-1 draw. Next, in the second match, they went up 2-0 with goals from Vidmar and Kewell. But Iran scored twice in the last fifteen minutes to steal a place in France after a pitch invasion halted the pace.



A month later, the Socceroos lost in the final of the Confederations Cup, having advanced to the tournament. The agony of losing out became even more acute, and Venables returned to England.



Throughout 1991 and 1993, Venables also served as chief executive of Tottenham.

Trevor Brooking has today claimed that Steve McClaren could one day return as the manger of the England side. With Fabio Capello already stating that he will leave his position with the FA after the 2012 European Championships, and the FA insisting that an Englishmen will replace him, could ‘The Wally with the Brolly’ really return?
For me no. Regrettably&nbsp; I can recall been stood at a rain-soaked Wembley on a cold November night and watching McClaren’s England spectacular humiliation &nbsp;against Croatia. The 3-2 defeat saw the Three Lions fail to qualify for Euro 2008. My memory of the night may be a bit a hazy after the game, mainly due to the need drown my sorrows, but that feeling of failure has remained etched in my mind since then.
To be fair to McClaren he has managed to pick his career up off the floor in the years that have passed. A successful spell in Holland saw him win the Dutch Eredivisie in his second season with FC Twente. McClaren followed up this success with a move to the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg and after a slow start results are beginning to improve their.
FA Director of Football Development Trevor Brooking believes that McClaren’s experience of managing on the continent could really be an advantage should he wish to give managing his national side a second chance.
He said: “Steve has done fantastic to get a title (with FC Twente). PSV and Ajax are usually the sides in Holland who do that and now Wolfsburg are picking up. It is a big challenge and it is great for an English coach.
“Could Steve do the England job again? I am sure if he continues to be a success his name will be in the frame again. I wouldn’t rule anybody out.”
While McClaren’s recovery has been impressive I still feel the scepticism that would surround his appointment would be far too great for him to ever be a success, and while the other options aren’t great, I still think we shouldn’t take a step backwards and turn to a manager who has previously failed.

Well, can things get any worse for Newcastle United than they currently are? One win in the league in 3 months, the manager still recovering from his triple heart bypass operation, crowds are falling, the caretakers pointing out, in case you’ve missed it, that Newcastle find themselves in a relegation battle and then today the English papers are full <a href="http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/article2336879.ece" target="_blank">of a certain ex-England manager</a> riding to the rescue of the Geordie nation.
Ah, the return of Terry Venables to the Premiership once again. Could he be the man to save Newcastle United from returning to the Championship, 16 years after they left it? A man who has given me some of my favourite footballing memories during his spells at Barcelona, Tottenham and England but has seen his stock fall rapidly with disastrous spells at Crystal Palace, Portsmouth and Leeds United during the beginning of the implosion for the Elland Road club.
Now El Tel has several contacts in the media and his name often crops up whenever high profile vacancies or situations are in the media, so it’s no real surprise to see this latest connection being made today but honestly, can Venables really save Newcastle United? I’m not so sure he’s got the clout to pull it off at all anymore. At Leeds United, his term there was dreadful and the club were in real danger of going down, despite having a much stronger squad than Peter Reid inherited, ultimately keeping them up.That was nearly six years ago now and Newcastle are in more trouble than Leeds United were when he took over. Venables has always been Teflon coated in the eyes of some media outlets in the UK, who conveniantly forget the Palace/Pompey/Leeds situations. In fact, for a glimpse of Newcastle potential future, they only have to cast eyes down the A1 towards West Yorkshire.
The report uses the usual British media tactic of ” a club insider told us” to give credence to the story,but ultimately, Venables has been so out of form managerially recently I can’t see there being any substance to it. As much I loved the memories of the 80’s and 90’s under Venables at White Hart Lane, I can’t seeing him being able to do anything to save Newcastle United. Yet, it wouldn’t surprise me under the current regime if he did reappear at St James’ Park as interim manager until the end of the season such is the lack of football knowledge in the boardroom in Newcastle.
The Geordie fans may be thinking just what they’ve done to deserve this but ever since Bobby Robson was sacked after 4 games of the 2004/2005 season, Newcastle have fallen further and further down the table, seeing 5 managers and 3 caretakers try and fill his boots. What they would give for Robson to be anywhere near healthy to come in and save them but his battle with terminal cancer is catching up with him sadly. Mike Ashley’s made plenty of mistakes, hell, he’s hardly made any right decisions since coming in, but&nbsp; getting Venables in would compound them all.
Newcastle are facing relegation in the face, with trips to Liverpool, Tottenham, Stoke and Aston Villa to come and the only bonus being that they’ve got to play Middlesbrough at home. To stay up, they need all the luck in the world to fall for them but with every passing defeat safety becomes a more distant prospect and the realisation that next season could see them playing at Barnsley, Peterborough and QPR will reduce the staunchest Geordie to tears. If Mike Ashley is serious of transforming Newcastles fortunes, he needs to prepare for relegation under Kinnear, wait until the end of the season and then ask SV Hamburg to name their price for Martin Jol and allow him to rebuild them in the Championship.

Wednesday were all at sea for years…&nbsp;
Did you ever think that you would look at the Premier League table and see the Wigan in 7th, Hull take 20 points in the first 9 games and Fulham challenging for 6th?
If&nbsp; that wasn’t&nbsp;strange enough, once Champions League semi-finalists Leeds United are currently sitting in the middle of the third tier following in similar footsteps to the once impressive Sheffield Wednesday.&nbsp;
So what happened to the big boys who are nowhere to be seen in England’s top 20?
&nbsp;Leeds United – Essentially,&nbsp;Leeds&nbsp;spent millions&nbsp;that they simply did not have under the guidance of&nbsp;then chairman, Peter Ridsdale (now at Cardiff City)&nbsp;.&nbsp;Ridsdale took out large loans to buy&nbsp;players in&nbsp;an effort to&nbsp;build on&nbsp;the success of&nbsp;previous high finishes.&nbsp;The club expected to pay these back with prize money and revenue from television rights obtained from progress in the UEFA Champions League. Of course Leeds then failed to qualify and this led to high profile player sales to try and keep the club afloat, most notably Rio Ferdinand to bitter rivals&nbsp;Manchester United. This transfer caused the dispute between Ridsdale and manager David O’ Leary, under whom they never finished lower than fifth. Terry Venables took over followed by Peter Reid and then Eddie Gray but alas after three years of financial meltdown the club was relegated.
United were then the subject of a succesful take over bid by a Ken Bates (the once controversial Chairman of Chelsea). The club nearly made a return at the second attempt under&nbsp;Kevin Blackwell,&nbsp;Leeds finished fourth and reached the play-off final only to lose to Watford. Blackwell was sacked early in the following season after a sluggish start and was replaced by Dennis Wise. Despite the change in regime wise couldn’t lift Leeds out of the bottom three. With&nbsp;relegation&nbsp;virtually assured, the club applied to go into&nbsp;administration immediately in an attempt to incurr the 10 point dedution&nbsp;penalty whilst in the Championship. The football league overruled this and after a lengthy court battle and&nbsp;dispute with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, Leeds started life in League One, 10 points adrift. Amazingly they still reached&nbsp;the play off final and lost to Doncaster.

They are currently seventh in League One and four points off the play-offs with a game in hand. Should Leeds achieve promotion, it will be an arduous task to keep them in the second tier. It will be a long, LONG time before Leeds compete for European football again.
Sheffield Wednesday – In the 1990/91 season Wednesday were relegated to the second tier having spent the previous six seasons in the top flight. Little did they know they were about to enter the club’s most succesful&nbsp;spell in the modern era. Promotion back to&nbsp;the top echelon of the English game&nbsp;was secured at the first attempt with the&nbsp;Owls&nbsp;finishing&nbsp;third. For all the joy that promotion brought the&nbsp;Hillsbrough faithful, this was&nbsp;eclipsed in some style by winning the League cup in the same&nbsp;season by defeating Manchester United&nbsp;1-0 at Wembley to win the clubs first major trophy since 1935.
&nbsp;The following season Trevor Francis took over the reigns in a player-manager role&nbsp;to fill the void left by Ron Atkinson’s departure to Aston Villa. Francis success was immediate, securing a third-place finish in their first season and Wednesday made four appearances at Wembley the following season. Defeating bitter rivals Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi final and losing the final after a replay to Arsenal.&nbsp;The Gunners&nbsp;had beaten Wedneday in the league cup final at the twin towers earlier in the season.
&nbsp;It was the 1994/95 season where most Wedneday fans feel it started to go wrong. After achieving another seventh place finish, Trevor Francis was sacked after a disappointing start that led to club finishing 13th and was succeeded by&nbsp;David Pleat and the latter by&nbsp;Danny Wilson&nbsp;This signalled the start of a managerial merry-go-round at&nbsp;Hillbrough,&nbsp;nine managerial changes followed in a mere&nbsp;ten years from Francis’ departure
Wednesday’s financial problems were starting to be exposed,&nbsp; the managers that followed&nbsp;Francis&nbsp;invested heavily in the squad with very little to show for it. Inflated transfer fees,&nbsp;high wages&nbsp;and badly negotiated contracts were the order of the day&nbsp;for the ailing club and they soon had to offload the high earners.
Wednesday started to capitulate and were relegation favourites for the&nbsp;1999/2000 season, a disastrous campaign demonstrated by the 8-0 thrashing by Newcastle United. As a last ditch attempt at survival Wilson was replaced by Peter&nbsp;Shreeves who failed to keep the club in the top&nbsp;flight, Wednesday were relegated&nbsp;away to Arsenal despite a 3-3 draw on the last day.
After relegation Paul Jewell, Peter Shreeves (again), Chris Turner all braved the hot seat. The Owls&nbsp;suffering another relegation under Turner’s tenure at the club.&nbsp;
Stability&nbsp;And The Future
&nbsp;Paul Sturrock brought the club off its knees and Wednesday were promoted to the Championship in 2004 via the League One play offs and even kept the club in the Championship after the promotion. Wednesday however started the next season in poor fashion and the&nbsp;scot&nbsp;was replaced by currrent manager&nbsp;Brian Laws who guided the club to ninth in the league. Last season Wednesday survived the dogfight&nbsp;but with an ambitious new Chairman and a solid manager in Laws &nbsp;who has performed well on a shoe-string budget,&nbsp;Wednesday may well return to Premier League in the coming years.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse for Newcastle United, it just did. In the battle of the two bottom teams of the Premier League, Newcastle lost 2-1 at home tonight to fellow underachievers Tottenham Hotspur in the Carling Cup in front of their lowest attendance in years.
The performance by Newcastle was utterly pathetic, lacking any passion, character, pace and commitment. Newcastle looks like a team with nothing to play for and without the leadership of a permanent manager, which is exactly the situation they find themselves in.
At St James’s Park tonight, there were massive pockets of empty seats visible as United fans decided to stay at home instead of supporting their club. In 1992, 14,000 saw a first-round League Cup game against Mansfield. Tonight the attendance was 19,743. This at a club where their average attendance in the Premier League last season was 51,122. The lowest attendance since St. James’s Park was redeveloped, before tonight, was 33,000.

The attendance was so small that oftentimes you could hear the players shouting instructions to each other from the field.
Tottenham, for most of the first half, looked equally as apathetic until Roman Pavlyuchenko scored his first goal for Spurs with a header, and Jamie O’Hara soon followed up with a second for Tottenham. Michael Owen picked up his fourth goal of the season near the end of the match.
If it wasn’t for Owen, Newcastle would be in even deeper trouble in 2008.
Newcastle To Announce New Manager
Things will seemingly get even worse for the club who, according to newspaper reports, seem likely to appoint <a href="http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/article1730391.ece#OTC-RSS&amp;ATTR=Football" target="_blank">Terry Venables as Newcastle manager</a> either on a permanent or temporary basis.
Venables hasn’t managed in more than four years since he was sacked by Leeds United in March, 2003. At Leeds, his managerial skills were pathetic. The last person Newcastle needs now is another Londoner trying to sort the club out. Newcastle fans and players are sick of Dennis Wise and Mike Ashley, and Terry Venables will be no different.
The only thing Venables will be able to do is to schmooze the British media.
Newcastle, if they do decide to hire Venables, will drive the value of the club down even more than now.
