The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tag/champions-league/">2025-26 UEFA Champions League</a> season is about to kick off, and awards from last year’s edition have already been handed out. Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy claimed the Golden Boot for the 2024-25 campaign, but the decision has raised questions as to why Barcelona winger <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tag/raphinha/">Raphinha</a> was overlooked despite finishing with the same number of goals.



Dortmund put together a solid run last season, reaching the quarterfinals largely thanks to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tag/serhou-guirassy/">Guirassy</a>’s brilliance. The Guinean forward appeared in 14 Champions League games, scoring 13 goals and adding 5 assists to establish himself among Europe’s elite.



Dortmund’s run ended in the quarterfinals against <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tag/barcelona/">Barcelona</a>, who cruised to a 4-0 win at Montjuic Olympic Stadium. The German side struck back with a 3-1 victory in the return leg, but it wasn’t enough to overturn the deficit and they were eliminated from the competition.



In that second match, Guirassy made history by becoming the first African player to score a hat trick in a Champions League game from the quarterfinal stage onward. The treble pushed his tally from 10 to 13 goals, ultimately sealing the Golden Boot — a milestone Dortmund proudly highlighted on their social media channels.

<h2>Why Guirassy and not Raphinha?</h2>



Raphinha arguably had the more complete campaign, not just by reaching the semifinals but also by being directly involved in 22 goals — 13 goals and 9 assists. With both players tied at the top of the scoring charts, and the Brazilian boasting far more overall contributions, many fans wondered why Guirassy walked away with the honor.

Borussia Dortmund has finally completed the signing of Serhou Guirassy. The now former <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/stuttgart-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers/">Stuttgart</a> star had been linked with the fellow German side for weeks now. Nevertheless, concerns regarding an injury were brought up during the first part of the striker’s medical at the BVB. Guirassy reportedly suffered a minor knee setback while on international duty with Guinea in June.



<a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/borussia-dortmund-tv-schedule/">Dortmund</a>‘s concerns were eased when it was determined that the forward would not need surgery. Instead, the 28-year-old star is expected to be ready for the start of the 2024/25 campaign with just a little rest. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5645382/2024/07/18/serhou-guirassy-dortmund-transfer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Reports</a> suggest that BVB believes Guirassy will take part in their preseason preparations. The striker does also not have a reported <a href="https://www.transfermarkt.us/serhou-guirassy/verletzungen/spieler/270541" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">history</a> of knee problems.



Guirassy now officially joins Dortmund from Stuttgart in a deal worth just over $19 million. The forward previously signed on with the Reds back in 2022 on an initial loan from Stade Rennais. Stuttgart, however, made the move permanent just last summer for around $10 million. Although the club would have liked to get more money from Dortmund in the deal, the aforementioned transfer fee was set due to a release clause in his previous contract.



<h2>Guirassy scored 28 league goals last season with Stuttgart</h2>



The veteran striker could not contain his excitement about joining the BVB. “When Borussia Dortmund asks, it’s something special,” Guirassy <a href="https://www.bvb.de/de/de/aktuelles/news/news.html/bvb-verpflichtet-serhou-guirassy.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> after making the move official. “Every child in the world who is interested in football knows this club, knows the black and yellow jerseys, knows the Yellow Wall.”



“I’m very excited about all of this, about my new teammates. And it’s important for me to say: I came here to win titles. That’s my goal, that’s what drives me. The club showed what’s possible at BVB last year by reaching the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/">Champions League</a> final.”

Dortmund ultimately fell in the European title decider to Real Madrid. They also only finished fifth in the Bundesliga table during the most recent campaign as well. This came after the club only managed to score 68 German top-flight goals in the campaign.



Guirassy, however, should give BVB a serious goal threat moving forward. After netting a respectable 11 Bundesliga goals in just 22 appearances while on loan at Stuttgart, the forward <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/serhou-guirassy-stuttgart-surprise-superstar-20231118-WST-465569.html">took the league by storm</a> last year. The Guinea international netted 28 total league goals for his now-former team in the 2023/24 season. This impressive figure was only bested in the Bundesliga by <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/bayern-munich-tv-schedule/">Bayern Munich</a> star Harry Kane.



<h2>Dortmund is experiencing significant changes at the club</h2>



Despite their recent deep Champions League run, there is a bit of a changing of the guard at Dortmund. Historical mainstays in the squad such as Marco Reus and Mats Hummels have both departed the club this summer. 



Former loanees Jadon Sancho and Ian Maatsen are also not returning to Germany either. Along with the players, head coach Edin Terzić recently left the team as well. The German manager has been replaced by former Dortmund midfielder Nuri Şahin.



Guirassy will be joined at his new club by former Stuttgart teammate Waldemar Anton. The center-back recently completed a $24.5 million move to Dortmund to help solidify their defense. With the duo in the team, Stuttgart shocked many German soccer fans by finishing second in the league table. BVB execs are hoping that both Guirassy and Waldemar can have a similar impact on their squad.

As they attempt to turn around a disastrous season, Manchester United consider the January transfer window a pivotal time.



Sir Jim Ratcliffe could provide some reinforcements to boss Erik ten Hag’s squad so he can turn around their form. One reason <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-united-tv-schedule/">United</a> has struggled this season is because it has not had a reliable striker.



<a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/ten-hag-clarifies-hojlund-substitution-amidst-heated-fan-reaction-20230917-WST-456816.html">Rasmus Hojlund</a> has fallen short of expectations after arriving in the summer for $92 million. The 20-year-old has only managed to score once in the league in 24 appearances, for a total of six goals.



Worse still, Marcus Rashford, who led the Red Devils in scoring last season, has struggled hard thus far in 2023-24. In all tournaments, he has scored only three goals.



Meanwhile, fitness and form have been constant concerns for Anthony Martial for quite some time. As a result, the Frenchman has been limited to only two goals.



<h2>Erik ten Hag willing to move quick for Stuttgart ace</h2>



The Old Trafford side is in danger of having a forgettable season overall and will have to rely on the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/fa-cup-tv-schedule/">FA Cup</a> as its only trophy hope. Thus, they could use some new blood in the attack, and Ten Hag is likely to prioritize such an acquisition.



To that end, Manchester United is keeping an eye on Serhou Guirassy in the hopes of adding to their offensive options this month. The 27-year-old has been sensational for Stuttgart this year, appearing in all 14 of their league matches and scoring 17 goals.



He is an ideal candidate for the position at Old Trafford. There have been whispers that the 27-year-old’s contract has a cheap and affordable release clause.



It has understandably aroused the curiosity of the best teams in Europe. In fact, just $19 million would be enough to free Guirassy from his <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/bundesliga-tv-schedule/">Bundesliga</a> contract this month.

Nevertheless, according to German outlet <a href="https://www.bild.de/sport/fussball/vfb-stuttgart/vfb-stuttgart-serhou-guirassy-verletzt-platzt-der-wechsel-86685430.bild.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BILD</a>, this provision is only “valid until mid-January”. As a result, the Red Devils will need to move quickly to finalize the transaction.



The striker is playing in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/africa-cup-of-nations-tv-schedule/">Africa Cup of Nations</a> with Guinea right now. Nevertheless, in Monday’s friendly match against Nigeria, was substituted due to a knee injury. Guinea is keeping its fingers crossed that he will be able to play in next week’s opening match against Cameroon.

After a journeyman career that took him across France and Germany, Guirassy landed in <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/stuttgart-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers/">Stuttgart</a> in 2022 at the age of 26. His $10 million transfer tag at the time of the transfer has almost quadrupled due to his prolific goalscoring nature. Linked with Chelsea, Bayern, Tottenham, and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/fulham-tv-schedule/">Fulham</a>, Guirassy has been one of the hottest topics of this season.



But why has this “unknown” striker suddenly burst into the mainstream? What makes him so special? And how can Champions League teams profit from his presence?



<h4>Why he’s succeeding at Stuttgart</h4>



Guirassy isn’t a completely “unknown” striker. He found success in Ligue 1 with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/rennes-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers/">Rennes</a> in 2020-22, scoring 25 goals in 81 appearances. He led the front line in Rennes’ <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/">Champions League</a> campaign in 2020 alongside Jeremy Doku, Edouardo Camavinga, Edouard Mendy, and Raphinha. Guirassy gained relevance as a solid hold-up player who could score from tight angles and even pull a trick or two out of his hat. He was compared to Moussa Dembélé and Romelu Lukaku.



He exploded partly because he had more playing time and opportunities than ever. At Rennes, he competed with Gaëtan Laborde, who gobbled up playing time in Ligue 1. However, at Stuttgart, Guirassy played a huge role in his two seasons.

Stuttgart usually lines up with two wingers, an attacking midfielder, and a center-forward. Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß has the wingers, Silas and Chris Führich, simply stick out wide, complete dribbles across the sideline, and make a lot of crosses, something that would only be common 50 years ago. The attacking midfielder, Enzo Milliot, also completes a lot of crosses, and his main purpose is to link the attack with the midfield, he does a lot to create chances for Guirassy. At Stuttgart, Guirassy is the center of the offense.



This offensive system is the reason why he has over a quarter of the team’s total shots (31), over half of the team’s goals (14), and a third of the team’s shots on target (17). Although the methods differ, the results are the same; Guirassy has become the Bundesliga’s new Haaland. So far, defenses have been unable to control him, with top-tier squads like Dortmund and Union Berlin. His good form seems set to continue. 



<h4>What to expect</h4>



Guirassy suffered a hamstring injury in Stuttgart’s win over Union Berlin, missing a good month of action. He returned to action in a 2-1 win over Dortmund, scoring a goal in just 23 minutes played. He’ll definitely come back at full strength following this international break.



His Transfermarkt value has <a href="https://www.transfermarkt.us/serhou-guirassy/profil/spieler/270541">skyrocketed</a> from $10 million in the summer to $40 million, with nearly every big club linked with the Guinean goalscorer. It looks likely Stuttgart will cash out on Guirassy due to their dangerous financial state, so teams can start placing their bids as soon as July. 



Stuttgart is third in Bundesliga, and will certainly contend for a top-four spot in the Bundesliga. They have a real chance of contending for a Champions League berth, their first appearance in 15 years.



Whether or not Guirassy will be there for those Champions League matches wearing a Stuttgart shirt, it’s unlikely given his current track record.

Serhou Guirassy is a name that many teams, including <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/fulham-tv-schedule/">Fulham</a>, are looking to steal in the January transfer window. The Guinea international leads the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/bundesliga-tv-schedule/">Bundesliga</a> scoring charts after eight games. He has an absurd 14 goals in eight appearances with Stuttgart. He is a major part of the reason the club sits second in the Bundesliga table with seven wins and one loss.



Stuttgart only bought Guirassy this past summer in a move worth $10 million. They put a release clause in his contract for the relatively paltry sum of $20 million. Therefore, clubs can activate that transfer with relative ease. With how regularly Guirassy is scoring in this season’s Bundesliga, that fee is minimal. He has scored two goals in one game on three occasions this season. He <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wYjCxssIa4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">already has two hat tricks</a> as well.



Of all the teams targeting Guirassy, Fulham needs his services the most. After <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/fulham-finally-agree-to-sell-mitrovic-to-al-hilal-says-report-20230819-WST-451048.html">losing Aleksandar Mitrovic to a Saudi Arabian transfer</a>, the goals have dried up at Craven Cottage. Fulham has scored eight goals through nine <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> games. Guirassy had eight goals this season after four games with Stuttgart. Guirassy presents an affordable option for the club to answer its goal-scoring woes. 



<h2>Fulham keeping taps on Serhou Guirassy among other strikers</h2>



To keep things open, Guirassy is not the only player Fulham is keeping an eye on. For example, the Independent claimed the London club is tracking Genk’s Gift Orban, Southampton’s Carlos Alcaraz and Sporting’s Geny Catamo. However, none of those equate to the output of Guirassy early on in 2023/24. He leads the top five European leagues with goals.

Guirassy was on loan with Stuttgart last season before making a permanent move from Stade Rennais this summer. He scored 14 goals in 29 games last season, which was a decent return. His price stayed low in a diluted market for strikers who made transfers.



For example, Fulham paid $27 million for <a href="https://www.transfermarkt.us/alex-iwobi/profil/spieler/242631">Alex Iwobi</a> and $8 million for <a href="https://www.transfermarkt.us/raul-jimenez/profil/spieler/206040">Raul Jimenez</a>. Those two have a combined 15 appearances and zero goals for Fulham this season. Guirassy would be a cheap option that can score goals, as seen with his recent seasons at Stuttgart.



<h2>Can Stuttgart retain its striker?</h2>



If, or rather when, Fulham or another club comes calling, Stuttgart will attempt to fight to hold on to Serhou Guirassy. Fortunately for the German side, Guirassy stated he wants to stay with Stuttgart through January. Currently, the Guinean is dealing with an injury that will sideline him for around three weeks. Still, his commitment and injury have not slowed down transfer buzz.



For example, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a>, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/chelsea-tv-schedule/">Chelsea</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/tottenham-tv-schedule/">Tottenham</a> are joining Fulham in the hunt for Guirassy. Those clubs have deep pockets that could sway Stuttgart to sell its commodity to the highest bidder. Any team that goes above $20 million would get automatic access to the player, though, unless he personally denies the move to the Premier League. His impact will become apparent as Stuttgart looks to maintain its form without Guirassy against Hoffenheim next weekend in a top-six clash.
