James Rodriguez, a celebrated figure in Colombian soccer, is encountering challenges in his latest stint with La Liga’s Rayo Vallecano. Since joining the club on a one-year contract over the summer, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/another-shot-laliga-side-plan-stunning-move-for-ex-madrid-star/">James</a> has struggled to make a substantial impact, and his limited playing time has raised concerns about his fit within head coach Inigo Perez’s tactical system. As the winter transfer window approaches, there are growing indications that James could be on his way out. Italian side Lazio, previously linked with the 32-year-old, has reportedly rekindled its interest, seeing an opportunity to bring the Colombian midfielder to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/where-to-watch-serie-a-on-us-tv-and-internet/">Serie A</a>. Journalist Ekrem Konur reported that Lazio is “considering signing James Rodriguez to bolster their squad for the winter transfer market.” Clubs from Turkey are also rumored to be potential destinations, with Rayo Vallecano’s management reportedly open to discussing an early departure for the forward.



Reports indicate that Perez never specifically requested James’ signing; instead, the acquisition was driven by club management, particularly by Rayo Vallecano president Raul Martin Presa. Journalist Marcos Vicente has echoed these sentiments, suggesting that Rodriguez’s limited role stems from a fundamental mismatch with Perez’s tactical vision. “James will not play as a starter with Rayo Vallecano from now until the end of the season, unless everything changes. It’s not a personal problem with James, nor with the coaching staff or the coach; it’s simply that he doesn’t match what Rayo Vallecano needs from him,” Vicente said on the Spanish television program.

Sunday was a warm day in Bournemouth where The Cherries faced Rayo Vallecano in a preseason friendly. It’s preparation for the upcoming 2024/25 Premier League campaign where Bournemouth plays Nottingham Forest on August 17 (televised via <a href="https://imp.i305175.net/c/330866/1313913/11640" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow">Peacock</a>).



The friendly served as a reunion between Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola and his former team from Madrid, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/rayo-vallecano-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers">Rayo Vallecano</a>. Iraola was their manager for three years and brought success to the ‘’Rayistas,’’ managing to take them back to the top flight of Spanish football, making them reach the Copa del Rey semifinals and even allowing them to dream of European football. (’’Rayo-Liverpool’’ was a popular chant during Iraola days at the Estadio de Vallecas). 



It was also a match between two teams celebrating their 125th and 100th anniversaries since they were founded.



<h2>Bournemouth vs Rayo Vallecano</h2>



It was a chance for Iraola to experiment and try new players in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/bournemouth-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers/">Bournemouth</a> starting eleven, such as the latest signings Dean Huijsen and Daniel Jebbinson.



For Rayo Vallecano’s coach, Iñigo Pérez (who used to be second in command during Iraola’s time in Vallecas), it was an opportunity to turn things around after not being able to win a single game out of the four friendlies they had played so far before this one.

The match itself resulted in a 1-0 win for the home side. Luis Sinisterra scored the only goal of the day. After a series of mistakes and poor tackles from Rayo Vallecano’s defenders, the Colombian player managed to get the ball from the halfway line, ran past goalkeeper Dani Cardenas and calmly put the ball in the back of the net 31 minutes after the beginning of the game. 



What followed were very few attempts from both teams to change the score.&nbsp;



<h2>Rayo Vallecano players go out of their way to connect with traveling fans</h2>



After the game, many fans gathered outside the stadium to meet the players. While the number of Bournemouth fans was larger due to being the home team, Rayo Vallecano managed to attract a good number of fans.



Fans from Romania with Andrei Rațiu shirts, students from Barcelona and even locals got to meet most of the players as they stopped one by one to take pictures, sign different memorabilia, and talk to the fans waiting for them almost a thousand miles away from Vallecas. 



Having grown up in Vallecas, this is the kind of respect and closeness that you can always expect from the players of this team, whose identity is very much in line with that of the fans. In Spain, many clubs declare themselves to be the ‘’neighborhood team,’’ but with little actions like these, Rayo Vallecano proves they might just be it.

Sevilla star Lucas Ocampos has called on <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/la-liga-tv-schedule/">LaLiga</a> officials to get involved after an unusual incident interrupted a recent game. The winger and his club faced <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/rayo-vallecano-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers/">Rayo Vallecano</a> in a Spanish top-flight matchup on Monday night. With the game level at 1-1, Ocampos attempted to take a throw-in in front of the home Rayo supporters. 



However, one young fan poked the player’s backside before he could resume play. Ocampos quickly turned his attention back towards the opposing supporter and subsequently called on the referee to intervene. As a result, the match was briefly stopped, and several Rayo players asked the fans not to interrupt the game.



<h2>Ocampos references racism and sexism after poking incident</h2>



<a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/sevilla-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers/">Sevilla</a> went on to win the fixture 2-1 thanks to a goal by Youssef En-Nesyri just before the halftime break. While the victory helped give the club a little breathing room towards the wrong end of the table, much of the postgame talk revolved around the aforementioned incident.



Ocampos discussed the event during an interview with DAZN. “You can see what happened in the images,” <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/2024/feb/06/sevilla-lucas-ocampos-rayo-vallecano-fan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> Ocampos. “I hope LaLiga takes it as seriously as it takes racism and these things. I don’t think all the Rayo people are like that because they have always treated us with respect, but there is always one fool.”

The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/argentina-national-team-tv-schedule/">Argentina</a> international also hinted that the incident would be handled differently if it occurred during a women’s match. “I hope it doesn’t happen in other areas because if this happens in a women’s football match, we know what can happen,” continued Ocampos. “I kept my calm because I have two daughters.”



Both <a href="https://sevillafc.es/en/actual/news/official-statement-lucas-ocampos-2024" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sevilla</a> and Rayo published separate statements condemning the poking incident in support of Ocampos. The home side <a href="https://www.rayovallecano.es/noticias/comunicado-oficial-sobre-el-partido-frente-al-sevilla-fc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">claimed</a> the incident goes against their values and that they are working to identify the fan.



<h2>LaLiga criticized for handling of several fan issues</h2>



Racism, and LaLiga’s handling of the issue, is a major point of contention in Spain. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/real-madrid-tv-schedule/">Real Madrid</a> superstar Vinicius Junior has been racially abused by rival fans on at least 10 separate occasions in Spain. In a recent case, the Brazilian star received verbal abuse during a matchup with Sevilla in October.



Select Sevilla fans hurled abuse towards Vinicius following a heated confrontation with Ocampos. Both stars received yellow cards for the argument late in the contentious fixture. Following the incident, Sevilla’s stadium staff put a message on the scoreboard telling fans to stop with racist comments.



Months before the incident in Sevilla, Spanish soccer officials admitted that there is a racism problem in the country. LaLiga President Javier Tebas took to X to proclaim the problem was not as bad as others make it appear. Meanwhile, former Spanish federation chief Luis Rubiales did not necessarily agree.



“The first thing is to recognize that we have a problem in our country,” Rubiales <a href="https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/spanish-football-admits-it-has-racism-problem-after-vinicius-incident-2023-05-22/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> back in May. “It is a serious problem that also stains an entire team, an entire fan base, an entire club, an entire country.” 



Rubiales <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/spain-fa-president-luis-rubiales-resigns-following-hermoso-kiss-20230911-WST-455305.html">later resigned</a> from his role following a forced kissing scandal.

Ocampos wants poking incident to be taken as seriously as racism

Sevilla star Lucas Ocampos has called on LaLiga officials to get involved after an unusual fan incident interrupted a recent game.

ESPN decided to broadcast an upcoming <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/la-liga-tv-schedule/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LaLiga</a> matchup between <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/real-madrid-tv-schedule/">Real Madrid</a> and Rayo Vallecano on ESPN2. The move is fairly unusual, as most Spanish top-flight games are typically available on ESPN+ or ESPN. The fixture between the two sides is set for Thursday, May 25 at 4 p.m. ET.



<h5>Real hunting its fourth trophy of the season</h5>



Real Madrid, despite a disappointing LaLiga showing, is in the midst of another trophy-laden season. While they are sitting third in the Spanish top flight, Real have won the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and Copa del Rey titles. Los Blancos can collect the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Champions League</a> as well. They are currently in the semifinals against <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">Manchester City</a>. 



The May 25 matchup against Rayo would occur after the second leg fixture against the Premier League side. City clawed back to finish the first leg of the tie level at 1-1 thanks to a second-half strike by Kevin De Bruyne. The two teams will complete the matchup on May 17 in Manchester.

<h2>Rayo vying for Europe against Real Madrid on ESPN2</h2>



Rayo is in the middle of a fairly positive 2022/23 campaign as well. Although Los Franjirrojos are not a European powerhouse like Real, they are performing well in LaLiga this season. In fact, Rayo currently sits ninth in the Spanish top-flight table, just one point away from a European place.



Also based in Madrid, Rayo has only managed to qualify for European competition once in their 98-year-old history. This came during the 2000/01 campaign in the UEFA Cup. Rayo made the quarterfinals of the tournament that season.



ESPN most likely made the move to put the Real-Rayo match on ESPN2 for these compelling reasons. Real could be preparing for a Champions League Final matchup. While Rayo could quite possibly be vying for a <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/conference-league-tv-schedule/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Europa Conference League</a> position. The fixture will also be available to stream on ESPN+.

ESPN2 to broadcast upcoming Real Madrid game on TV

ESPN will broadcast an upcoming matchup between Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano on ESPN2, a crucial game for the latter's European bid.

After getting the nod from The Gaffer to start posting on La Liga Talk, I was in search of the first article I’d sink my teeth into.

Drugs? Football Players? FIFA Agents? 600 pounds of blow?&nbsp; Oh come on now, this can’t be real?
Today in Spain, eleven people were arrested, five of which make or made their living in the world of football, on <a href="http://www.20minutos.es/noticia/453206/0/detenidos/operacion/antidroga/#comentarios">suspicion of smuggling</a> 600 kilograms (yes, 600 kilograms) of Cocaine into Spain. 
The main culprit behind all of this was Zoran Matijevic, a Serbian agent who apparently had too much time on his hands and wasn’t happy with the money he was bringing in via the beautiful game.&nbsp; Apparently he was a bit behind the 8-Ball and needed to bring in some extra cash, and thanks to his frequent trips to South America, he was able to find a way to do that, through drug smuggling.
Also implicated in the sting, entitled Operation Cyclone, were two former Hercules players, Pedrag Stankovic and Jesus Emilio Dias, aka Txutxi.&nbsp; The most suprising of the bunch is Rayo Vallecano defender Carlos de La Vega, a 29 year old Spanish national who went from hopes of going up with Rayo (who currently sit third place in the table) to making sure Bubba doesn’t get a hold of him at night.
The scheme was simple.&nbsp; The five of them would front the cash needed to buy the drugs as if it was a huge mutual fund. Matijevic would go to South America, arrange for the sale of said drugs, and camouflage the drugs in windmill parts destined for Madrid.&nbsp; Brilliant…what could go wrong?
In this case everything, as the Spanish authorities has a special sting ongoing and arrested a total of 11 men as the package made landfall in Madrid, but before the football conglomerate could get their hands on the nose candy.
This isn’t the end for Operation Cyclone as authorities questioned more players at both Rayo Vallecano and Poli Ejido.
No word yet on the fate of any of the involved players or agents, but I’m sure we’ll find out breaking news from such lovely telebasura such as Aqui Hay Tomate.

Little About Morena… 
With grit and determination Fernando Morena became one of the greatest goalscorers in South American football history. 
One of Peñarol’s greatest stars came to this world on February 2nd, 1952. Born in Punta Gorda, Uruguay Fernando Morena Belora would become one of the greatest players in the rich history of the Uruguayan giants. His temperament, goal scoring knack, and ability to generate space made him one of the great goalscorers in South American football very much in the same mold as his childhood idol José Sanfilippo. Morena is currently the all-time leading scorer in Uruguayan football history as well as the 2nd leading scorer in the history of the Copa Libertadores behind another Peñarol idol, Alberto Spencer. 
From the time he was a young boy, his obsession for the game would take him to the summit of the football world, much to the dislike of his family. When he was six years old and attending the Colegio Maturana, he wore the legendary aurinegro, despite his family being rabid Nacional fans. “I was a huge Nacional fan growing up, but that changed when I started playing for River Plate. Then I started to have feelings for Peñarol afterwards,” said Morena. 
Youth stage 
At age 11, he was brought in to Baby Defensor where he would score 54 goals. He would begin making waves at the youth level and he would capture the eye of Argentine side Vélez Sarsfield, but would reject the move. 
He would end up at Grupo América where he would end up being brought in by his family’s greatest club. Despite shining with El Bolso there was something that was missing and he was not able to make the click that would unleash his complete potential at the youth level. 
He would head over to Racing and then to River Plate where he would start in the fifth division. At the darsenero, he was brought up slowly and would show his goalscoring prowess, thus making him a star in Uruguay. In his three seasons at River Plate, he scored 27 goals in 48 matches. During this time, Morena would end up earning his first cap with the Uruguayan national team in 1971. He would make his debut against Chile on October 27th, 1971 and would score in his debut. He would then make the big leap to super stardom. 
Peñarol won the battle of wills against Nacional and signed Nando in 1973 and thus began one of the greatest goalscoring streaks in the history of the game in South American football history. During his first stint with the manya he averaged well over a goal a game. He was the leading goalscorer in Uruguayan football for the six years he was there. 
In 1979, Morena signs with Madrid minnows Rayo Vallecano. Morena would shine on a team that would not be able to survive relegation. He would put up gaudy numbers for Rayo and caught the attention of Spanish powerhouse Valencia who looked for a player to step for the oft-injured Mario Kempes who at the time suffered a shoulder injury. That dream attacking duo would last very little as Kempes would head back to Argentina to play for River Plate half way through the season. Even though he would win the Spanish Super Cup with the Ches, he would be their leading scorer, and would fight for the league title until the final week of the season the club was starting to fall apart administratively and he decided to head back to Peñarol for a second stint. 
Who Said Sequels Were Bad? 
Morena would play with Peñarol another three seasons and they would be just as memorable for the manya as his first. 
He would win two more scoring titles and league titles, but this time he would also add a Copa Libertadores title and an Intercontinental Cup to his resume. The 1982 Copa Lib was one of the most memorable finishes in tournament history. After a scoreless first leg in Montevideo against Chilean side Cobreloa, things looked like they were going for a third and deciding match in Buenos Aires (which was the designated neutral site). With second left in the match, Morena would score the eventual title-clincher for el Carbonero. It was to be the club’ s fourth Libertadores title and their first since 1966.
Later on that year, Peñarol would also defeat Nottingham Forest in the Intercontinental Cup. 
He would end up making a cameo move to Boca Juniors where he would only take part in seven matches and cross the River Plate once again for a third and final stint with his beloved aurinegro. 
Records 
Fernando Morena holds every single scoring record in Charrúa football even having walked away from the game 25 years ago. He scored 667 goals in his illustrious career. He is the all-time leading scorer in Uruguayan football (235) and holds the single season record for goals (36). He also has the record for goals scored in a single game (7)
