<p>American women’s soccer team captain Lindsey Horan has backtracked on previous comments that eventually forced an apology out of the star.</p>



<p>Horan voiced her displeasure with the American fan base in an interview she gave to <a href="https://theathletic.com/5242921/2024/02/01/lindsey-horan-uswnt-world-cup/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Athletic</a> earlier this year. She claimed that the majority of Americans “aren’t that smart” when it comes to grasping the nuances of the game.</p>



<p>“American soccer fans, most of them aren’t smart. They don’t know the game. They don’t understand. [But] it’s getting better and better. I’m going to p**s off some people, but the game is growing in the US. </p>



<p>“People are more and more knowledgeable, but so much of the time people take what the commentators say, right? My mom does it,” she said on February 1.</p>



<p>The 29-year-old has now made the most of the chance to <a href="https://twitter.com/JustinRuderman_/status/1758270770344792149" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">address the matter</a> and offer her deepest apologies after her remarks were heavily criticized. Before the Women’s Gold Cup, she addressed the media and apologized for her comments, expressing her immense thanks to the team’s supporters.</p>



<h2>Horan comments on her previous remarks</h2>



<p>Horan paid tribute to the devoted soccer fans who are always learning more about the sport and the increasing popularity of soccer in the US.</p>



<p>“First and foremost, I would like to apologize to our fans. Some of my comments were poorly expressed and there was a massive lesson learned for me. When I think about our fans, I love them so much, this team loves them so much, and I can’t begin to explain how much they mean to us.”</p>

<p>“And I never wanted to take any of that away. And continuing on that, the soccer culture in America is changing and growing so much in such a positive way. The last thing I ever wanted to do was to offend anyone in that manner. So again, I deeply, deeply apologize.”</p>



<h2>Lindsey Horan comments on her apology</h2>



<p>Such remarks gained a lot of traction after the 2023 World Cup when the USWNT lost to Sweden in the quarterfinals. This was the earliest elimination in the history of the U.S. squad, and the Lyon star was the captain of her nation.</p>



<p>Horan added that thinking about her remarks and how others reacted to them was what caused her to apologize. “What I had inside of me, how I felt about it and how what I read and my opinion of my own comments,” she said.</p>



<p>“And also me wanting to express how much the fans just mean to me personally. And again, not wanting to take anything away from that. So I think that was just something always within me that I wanted to do.”</p>



<p>Furthermore, she expressed her desire for people to talk about the national team in the same way they talk about Manchester City, Arsenal, or Barcelona.</p>



<p>“That’s what I want people to say about us. I want people to talk about how incredible we are on the ball, the possession, the style of play, the technical ability, the tactical changes mid-game, these types of things.”</p>

USWNT team captain Lindsey Horan issued an apology after previous comments that insulted many American soccer fans.

<p>United States women’s national team captain Lindsey Horan has said that most American soccer fans are not smart. The Colorado native made the comments during a recent lengthy interview with <em>The Athletic</em>. While the discussion covered a plethora of topics on the sport, Horan raised eyebrows with the remark regarding fans here Stateside.</p>



<p>Horan was asked about how players’ performances are misunderstood in the country. The 29-year-old attacker began the conversation by claiming that fans put too much faith in analysis by television commentators.</p>



<p>“American soccer fans, most of them aren’t smart,” <a href="https://theathletic.com/5242921/2024/02/01/lindsey-horan-uswnt-world-cup/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proclaimed</a> Horan. “They don’t know the game. They don’t understand. [But] it’s getting better and better.”</p>

<h2>Star prefers French fans compared to those Stateside</h2>



<p>Horan then compared American fans to those in Europe. The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/uswnt-tv-schedule/">USWNT</a> star previously rejected the chance to play college soccer at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill to instead sign with Paris Saint-Germain. After four seasons in France, Horan then moved back home to play with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nwsl-tv-schedule-and-streaming-links/">NWSL</a> side Portland Thorns. However, she switched to France once again and signed with Lyon in early 2022.</p>

<p>“From what I’ve heard, people understand my game a little bit more, a sense of my football and the way I play,” Horan continued. “It is the French culture. Everyone watches football. People know football.”</p>



<p>Although Horan initially struggled to adapt back in France, she has since found her form once again. The versatile attacker has racked up 15 goals in her last 30 total matches at Lyon.</p>



<h2>Horan says culture needs to change within the USWNT </h2>



<p>Along with bashing American soccer fans, Horan also discussed the current state of the USWNT. The Stars and Stripes recently flopped at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. While the team had previously never finished worse than third at the tournament, they could not manage to get beyond the round of 16.</p>



<p>Following the collapse that the Women’s World Cup, veteran stars such as Julie Ertz and Megan Rapinoe retired from the team. As a result, the squad has undergone a bit of a youth revolution in recent months. The USWNT, with help from the young stars, has now focused attention on the upcoming Gold Cup and Olympics in France.</p>



<p>“A lot of these new young players are going to have big freaking roles, even in this Olympics,” stated Horan. “How the hell do we get the best out of them to go put us on the podium? It’s been a crazy place, but this is a really exciting role for me because I’ve felt like this is what I’m meant to do.”</p>



<p>“We need to change every bit of culture that we had prior to the last World Cup and going into this Olympics because we need to win. And that starts now.”</p>

It was the team’s worst-ever finish at the prestigious tournament.</p>



<p>Horan made the comments regarding the Women’s World Cup alongside former USWNT stars Tobin Heath and Christen Press on YouTube channel RE-INC. The current star of the team discussed <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/uswnt-boss-vlatko-andonovski-steps-down-after-world-cup-20230817-WST-450583.html">former head coach Vlatko Andonovski</a> and how the squad had only a small timeframe to get ready for the competition.</p>



<h2>Horan claims USWNT may have overcomplicated World Cup prep</h2>



<p>“When a coach comes in, it’s like, hey, how do we get the best out of every single individual player putting the most simplicity into a 10-day camp every few months and getting the best out of your team, and without overcomplicating everything?” stated Horan.</p>



<p>“Because yes, I could talk about the last four-year cycle, and we don’t need to get into every single thing, but that’s not what we did. We did not get the best out of every single individual. I don’t think everyone was fully prepared and that’s on us as well.”</p>

<p>Andonovski <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/uswnt-boss-vlatko-andonovski-steps-down-after-world-cup-20230817-WST-450583.html">stepped down</a> from his role less than two weeks after the USWNT exited the tournament. Kate Markgraf, the national team’s general manager, also <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/uswnt-overhaul-continues-as-gm-kate-markgraf-steps-down-20230819-WST-451025.html">recently resigned</a> as well. One of Markgraf’s first duties as GM of the team was to hire Andonovski back in 2019.</p>



<h2>U.S. players were too tense during matches</h2>



<p>Along with preparations not necessarily being in order, Horan also claimed that the squad was not relaxed at the tournament. This was particularly the case in the group stage. “Looking at those three group stage games, and you felt it in the team,” continued Horan. “You felt this tense feeling, and people were just not enjoying their football or they weren’t enjoying individually playing.”</p>



<p>The USWNT will quickly get back to the pitch with two friendlies scheduled against South Africa in September. Both fixtures are in the United States. FIFA ranks South Africa <a href="https://www.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/women?dateId=ranking_20230609" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">No. 54</a> in the world. <p>United States women’s national team co-captain Lindsey Horan has defended her team’s actions following a 0-0 draw against Portugal on Tuesday. Although the Americans qualified for the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-world-cup-tv-schedule/">Women’s World Cup</a> knockout round, they finished second in their group. This means that the top-ranked team must now face a tough Sweden team in the round of 16. Sweden is currently ranked third in the world by FIFA.</p>



<p>After the Portugal match, several <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/uswnt-tv-schedule/">USWNT</a> players were seen laughing and dancing on the pitch. This did not sit well with many in the soccer world, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/carli-lloyd-criticizes-uswnt-for-celebrating-after-draw-20230801-WST-446829.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">especially former star Carli Lloyd</a>. Now retired, Lloyd previously played for the USWNT alongside many current players, including Horan. The two-time Women’s World Cup winner also featured for current head coach Vlatko Andonovski.</p>



<h2>USWNT co-captain Horan “frustrated” by Lloyd comments</h2>



<p>Horan spoke about the controversy surrounding the celebrations on Thursday. The star midfielder labeled Lloyd’s comments as just “noise” and that outside opinions ultimately don’t matter. </p>



<p>“It’s kind of frustrating for me to hear,” Horan <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/38123545/usa-lindsey-horan-frustrated-carli-lloyd-criticism-team-mentality" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> during a press conference. “Especially knowing this team and knowing how much we put into every single game, how much preparation we put into every single game, seeing our trainings, seeing how hard we work.”</p>

But for me, I always want to defend my team and say: you have no idea what’s going on behind the scenes. <p>The USWNT players will be able to focus back to the action on the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 6. Germany, the No. 2 team in the FIFA Rankings, fell in the group stage. Therefore, the winner of the USWNT game against Sweden is the likely favorite to win the competition.</p>
