<p>Arsenal has confirmed its deal and partnership with Emirates will be continuing.</p>



<p>Emirates’ front-of-shirt sponsorship with Arsenal, now running until 2028, has become the longest-running in Premier League history. This new agreement will mark a remarkable <a href="https://www.arsenal.com/news/arsenal-and-emirates-extend-partnership-2028" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">22-year association between the two</a>.</p>



<p>The announcement came before the Gunners’ match against Monaco in the Emirates Cup, a pre-season game. Before, this agreement, the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a>-Emirates jersey sponsorship contract, agreed in 2018, would have expired in 2024.</p>

<p>First glimpsed in <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/arsenal-2023-24-kit-leaks-20230329-WST-425869.html">leaks in late March</a>, the Arsenal 2023/24 kit is officially here. The Gunners <a href="https://www.arsenal.com/news/introducing-our-new-202324-adidas-home-kit" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">released</a> its latest home shirt today. Both the men’s and women’s clubs will wear the shirt in the upcoming 2023/24 season. The new top will debut in the both teams’ finales in the Premier League and Super League seasons this weekend.</p>



<p>The new shirt is the classic Arsenal red with white sleeves, topped off with gold accents. A zig-zag/lighting bolt motif adorns the shirt front, upper back and socks. Dark red zig-zag vertical pinstripes go down the front of the top. In certain lighting conditions, you can see an additional tonal texture on top of the pinstripes.</p>



<p>The gold accent choice is a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the unbeaten 2003/04 “Invincibles” Arsenal side. The authentic version of the shirt has that team’s 26-12-0 record stitched into the side.</p>



<h2>The Arsenal 2023/24 kit</h2>

<p>The new home top pairs with white shorts and gold trim, and white socks that feature a vertical zig-zag red stripe. The zig-zag design elements throughout the kit carry over from this year’s home shirt. There, a similar design featured in red on the white polo collar.</p>



<p>The Emirates logo is rendered in white, which really makes it stand out above everything else. It’s the opposite effect of the latest <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/manchester-city-23-24-kit-celebrates-etihad-stadium-anniversary-20230519-WST-433673.html">Manchester City shirt</a>, where the sponsors somewhat fade into the background the club badge shines brightest.</p>



<p>The gold doesn’t appear as bold as it did in the leaks, especially from afar. It’s hard to see at all when you’re not up close. On TV or from the stands this will look like a much simpler design than it is.</p>

<p>Arsenal fans were expecting to enter the new season with a minimum of two new star signings, individuals that were pried away from their previous clubs due to their superior footballing abilities, but no such thing happened. &nbsp;They have tried and tried with Luis Suarez, and agreed personal terms with Gonzalo Higuain, and depending on who you trust, lost out to getting Luiz Gustavo because they weren’t willing to offer enough money. Supporters are already expecting another barren season, but what will irritate them most is that their neighbors and most hated rivals, Tottenham, have been wide awake throwing around their “Bale” money. &nbsp;Given that that they are most likely going to be without the Welshman for this season, they have made sure to compensate for that loss. Arsenal fans have become envious of a Tottenham transfer policy that has seen them bring in Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli, Paulinho and Etienne Capoue.</p>
<p>The news of Arteta’s injury has added fuel to a fire still burning from last season, briefly subdued by a fourth place finish. &nbsp;The loss of Arsenal’s makeshift defensive midfielder, a position they have failed to properly fill since Gilberto Silva’s departure, has left them scrambling. &nbsp;Having sent out Coquelin on loan and missing out on players like Gustavo and Capoue, who were heavily linked with Arsenal for the better part of last season, fans have started to become cynical and angered by the lack of ambition in the transfer market. &nbsp;The only other team in the race for the title that has not been making waves in the transfer market has been Manchester United. However, a title and managerial change will temporarily lessen expectations. Plus they wrapped up the signing of English forward Wilfried Saha long before the transfer window even opened.</p>
<p>Last year there was a clear and growing divide between the staunch supporters of Wenger and the fans that have had enough of him and wanted him to step down gracefully. Achieving Champions League football and touting a summer transfer budget of £70million, increased expectations for the club, and tempered the anger of supporters. When the window opened, transfer targets were plentiful and every player became a viable target, but as time passed and targets went elsewhere, even the loyal supporters of Wenger were starting to make noise.</p>
<p>It is clear that the team needs reinforcement, especially up front and the defensive midfield position. Olivier Giroud’s season last year was spotty, but he was expected to play every game and his physical condition started to suffer in February and March, picking up small injuries and a recurring back injury. &nbsp;Even the staunchest supporters of Wenger are having a hard time justifying the ever-increasing prices on tickets and merchandise, without the joy of seeing a world class player join the team. &nbsp;Without any signings, the rumbling will continue and any Arsenal loss against weaker opposition or a dry spell up front will prompt heavy jeering by the supporters. By not signing anyone, Wenger is not the only one under intense pressure but the whole squad will be, especially with a poor start to the season or failure to beat Fenerbahce. &nbsp;For young players like Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey and now Sanogo, coping with expectations to win the Premier League without receiving much support in terms of added cavalry may extremely harmful to their still growing confidence.</p>
<p>Whether signings will still be made remains to be seen. <a href="http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-we-re-not-scared-to-spend" target="_blank">Wenger says he’s not scared to make to spend</a>, but the proof is in the pudding. There isn’t much optimism among supporters and with Luis Suarez backtracking and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2013/08/16/luis-suarez-apologizes-to-liverpool-and-resumes-squad-training-daily-soccer-report/">apologizing to Liverpool</a>, his arrival at the Emirates will be scrapped.</p>
<p>These last two weeks are crucial for Wenger and his legacy. Wenger has always been a master tactician and his transfer dealings on a whole have been nothing short of spectacular, but he likes to find the perfect piece for the puzzle and if that does not come available, he may dip into the market for a makeshift player and often times, that ends up disastrous. &nbsp;If worse comes to worse, Arsenal may need to rely on Niklas Bendtner, and although in his delusional world he is somewhere between Pele and Maradona, his failures at Sunderland and Juventus and comments attacking Arsenal have made him a persona non grata at the Emirates, and seeing him in a full kit on the bench may see some supporters revolt. &nbsp;When the team’s options for a striker go from Gonzalo Higuain, Luis Suarez or David Villa to Nicklas Bendtner, then anger, rage and disappointment will be fully expected.</p>

<p>Well it certainly sounds like Owen Coyle will be moving the 25 or so miles to Bolton Wanderers to replace the sacked Gary Megson. After being given permission to talk to the Trotters, Coyle looks set to&nbsp; become the manager of a club he served so well for two years between 1993 and 1995. By all accounts, it’s a done deal and Burnley will begin to look at who they will need to replace the excellent work that Coyle has started at Turf Moor.</p>
<p>Phil Gartside, the Bolton chairman has certainly acted quickly to replace Megson, but their are two things about this potential appointment I can’t get my head around. Firstly, people are saying he has more of an emotional attachment to Bolton than Burnley and secondly, why on earth is Burnley’s chairman Barry Kilby allowing Coyle to talk to them?</p>

<p>The second point perplexes far more than the first. Why has Kilby allowed Coyle to talk to Bolton so easily? For all the criticism of football players agitating for moves, football managers it seems can simply walk away from a contract for nominal fees. Coyle signed a contract extension in the summer after turning down Celtic that tied him down to Turf Moor until June 2013. Now an offer from Bolton Wanderers is more appealing than talking over Celtic?</p>
<p>Now no-one can tell me that the Bolton Wanderers job is anywhere near the level of being in charge of Celtic. It’s a non-starter without question especially right now. Burnley are two points ahead, although having played two games more than Bolton and Wanderers travel to the Emirates on Wednesday night for one of their games in hand.</p>

<p>Burnley fans are rightly scratching their heads thinking what on earth is going on and I can understand their confusion. Why has Kilby not put his foot down and simply pointed out to Coyle the 3 years left on his contract. Or is Bolton’s offer simply too good for Kilby to turn down? Yet for all the money that may be on the table from Bolton to take Coyle, who on earth could replace him?</p>
<p>The first point that I mentioned, the much vaunted emotional attachment, doesn’t add up either. As a player, Coyle played 74 games for Bolton and as of Saturday, he has managed Burnley for 113 games. So how can he have such an attachment that makes Bolton a more attractive prospect than Celtic or staying at Burnley? It’s something that I just can’t understand, which seems to echo the feelings of the majority of Clarets fan.</p>

<p>To be honest, a move to Bolton is more of a sideways move right now than a move up the managerial ladder. Bolton, since Allardyce left have drifted along in the lower echelons of the Premier League, whilst Burnley have been on an upward trajectory ever since Coyle landed. All the pre-season predictions, <a href="http://epltalk.com/premiership-promotion-preview-no-3-burnley/9738" target="_blank">except for one idiot</a>, pointed to Burnley being cannon fodder.</p>
<p>Yes, their away form has been abysmal, but it smacks of naivety more than a lack of ability. On Saturday, they were being tipped as a team that could be embarrassed by lower league opposition in the F.A. Cup, but in the end, the comfortably dealt with M.K. Dons. They’ve impressed many people this season and good luck to them. Ironically, it was Coyle’s behavior after that game that set tongues wagging.</p>
<p>By claiming he couldn’t go the the post match press conference as he needed to catch a flight to Scotland immediately after the game, people thought fair enough. Unfortunately, Coyle was then caught out by still being at Stadium M.K. an hour later. It was then that questions began to be asked and since then, no-one has become any the wiser as to what on earth is happening. Just a word of advice for Mr Kilby, whatever you do, don’t give Graeme Souness the job!</p>

<p>Four weeks ago, Arsenal’s title challenge was over. The home defeat to Chelsea had seen everyone and their dog line up to kick Arsene Wenger’s team. While they were still licking their wounds, Manchester City snatched a win against the usual collection of youngsters, sprinkled with experience in the League Cup. Not good enough, not strong enough, need another striker they cried.</p>
<p>Well here we are then, on December 30th, Arsenal are tucked in 3rd, with a game in hand, which is against Bolton Wanderers at the Emirates next week. Win that and they go second in the table. Yet as the Portsmouth fans who have witnessed tonight’s thrashing at the hands of the Gunners said, if they had a predatory striker, they’d have scored 20.</p>

<p>For all the failings that Arsenal are constantly accused off, it’s their lack of that predator in the box that seemingly holds them back from killing teams off that their rivals manage to snuff out. Yet, it feels churlish to criticise a side that have score 51 goals in 19 Premiership games and could be second this time next week. Of course, as my fellow EPL talk <a href="http://epltalk.com/wenger-plans-for-the-two-weeks-that-will-determine-arsenal%E2%80%99s-season/14258#comment-89152" target="_blank">writer Eric Altshul wrote earlier this week</a>, Arsenal have a crucial 4 game period coming up from January 27th.</p>
<p>The results against the other big clubs do not determine the Premiership title, you only have to look at Liverpool’s result last season to see how little it effects the Premiership outcome. It is the games that you should win, that slip through your fingers that cost you titles and cups. For every emphatic thrashing of Portsmouth, there’s a defeat at Sunderland or a draw at West Ham United. Those are the games, especially the West Ham match when Arsenal threw away a 2-0 lead that will keep them from going top next week.</p>

<p>Of course, Wenger is one of the best managers at protecting his players and keeping his cards close to his chest. If he thinks he needs a striker, he’s not the type to come out and say it, he usually just goes out and gets his man. Now, with Arsenal having a real chance to get their hands on the Premier League title, having someone who has an ability to scuff the ball in off his backside is exactly what Arsenal need. Financially Wenger could, within reason, land any striker outside of the Premier League to give them that final piece.</p>
<p>For all the doom mongers complaining when he sold Adebayor and Toure, for a combined £41 million, the dissenting voices seem to have grown increasingly quiet. Replacing Toure with the elegant Vermaelen was a masterstroke that has seen the Belgian weigh in with some important goals from the back. With the injuries to van Persie, Bendtner, Walcott, Denilson and Fabregas and the impending African Cup of Nations taking Song, Wenger may be forced into the market whether he likes it or not.</p>

<p>Of course, the one major bonus to the injuries that have blighted Arsenal is the continued presence of Andrei Arshavin, who has continued to rein in his own attacking instincts for the benefit of the team. The lad has given a real team performance over the last few weeks at the expense of personal glory and has re-affirmed his reputation as an excellent footballer.</p>
<p>So Arsenal finish a year which has seen them continue to play beautiful football, but miss out on the big prizes. Perhaps Wenger has already decided what part of the jigsaw is required to complete the beautiful with a little bit of brawn in the box.</p>

<p>Twenty-five football matches scheduled for today <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/feb/03/weather-postponement-football-horseracing">have been canceled</a> due to…snow?&nbsp; What?&nbsp; Some puffy white water falling majestically from the sky?&nbsp; This is particularly ironic considering the prognosticators of climate change doom predicted an all-year-round Premier League as one of the upsides to flooded capitals, widespread famine, and, inevitably, <a href="http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=SVpN312hYgU">Soylent Green</a>.&nbsp; Someone forgot to tell them that, in fact, global warming produces higher rates of precipitation in traditionally “wet” climes, hence this week’s blanketing, one of several “freak” occurrences in the last few years.&nbsp; My guess is this is just the beginning and the English will have to get used to snow days, snow jobs, snow blowers, and snow soccer.</p>
<p>That’s right, football in the ice and snow.&nbsp; Can’t be done?&nbsp; If he were alive today, Sir Earnest Shackleton might want to have a brandy-soaked, frost-bitten word on the matter.&nbsp; The crew of doomed Antarctic expedition <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endurance_(1912_ship)"><em>Endurance</em></a> managed to find time in their busy schedule—surviving an eighteen month shipwreck on the coldest continent on earth—to play some lovely ice football (pictured above).&nbsp; That same year, some boys thought nothing much of practicing free-kicks on large chunks of iceberg along the deck of RMS Titanic. Even today there’s the Scottish Premier League where players think nothing of fifty-fifty challenges on frozen earth, or the Faroe Islands where league matches are played in conditions that would down a 747.</p>
<p>But a little snow falls on Holloway Road and Emirates Stadium closes indefinitely.</p>
<p>Full disclosure now: I’m in Canada.&nbsp; As I write this, snow is already accumulating at a rate that would have Sean Wright-Phillips gasping for air.&nbsp; We may not know much of anything up here, but we do know that snow is one of life’s little variables.&nbsp; Sure, a routine birth on a lovely summers day is nice enough, but giving birth in the middle of an epic snowstorm?&nbsp; The trip to the hospital alone would be a pub story to last decades.</p>

<p>Of course there are concerns about “player safety” and “pitch integrity” and “quality of play,” and all the rest of those namby-pamby, nanny-state Blairisms.&nbsp; But play a little footy on the white and we’ll see who’s got some lead left in glove-wearing, Crisco-haired “modern football.”</p>
