<p>Leicester City and Everton both picked up a point in a pivotal game in the relegation race in the Premier League. Both clubs held a lead at the King Power, but the score settled at two games a piece. </p>



<p>In truth, a draw is a fair result. Both clubs had stints of pressure. Leicester may have held more of the ball, but Everton tested the Leicester goalkeeper, Daniel Iversen, more. The result leaves Everton in 19th, a lone point out of safety. In fact, it is just a point behind Leicester City, which leaped over Leeds and Nottingham Forest into 16th. However, the Foxes have the best goal differential of the five clubs in the relegation battle.</p>



<h5>Foxes fight through frantic first half</h5>



<p>The desperation on both sides was clear early on. With just four games left after this game at the King Power, both Everton and Leicester wanted to jump on their opponent. It was Everton to find the breakthrough just 15 minutes in. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who won the penalty to begin with, <a href="https://twitter.com/NBCSportsSoccer/status/1653117569149050885" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">blasted beyond Iversen</a> in the Leicester net. It was just Calvert-Lewin’s second goal of the previous campaign, as the striker battles through injuries.</p>



<p>However, Leicester held the lead at the half courtesy of two goals in 12 minutes. The first came from an unlikely source. Çağlar Söyüncü, the center back who is leaving for Atletico Madrid in the summer, <a href="https://twitter.com/NBCSportsSoccer/status/1653119373249224715" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pounced on a loose ball</a> to level the scoreline. Then, not long after, Jamie Vardy found a lead for Leicester. In classic Vardy fashion, the Englishman’s speed got in behind the Everton defense. He made a simple move around a helpless Jordan Pickford and cozied the ball into the net.</p>

<p>Even though three goals in one half is a good return for goals in 45 minutes, there was potential for many more. For example, in one frantic minute. Calvert-Lewin somehow missed a tap-in, as he played the ball into Iversen after Dwight McNeil set up Calvert-Lewin. On the ensuing clearance, Vardy was one-on-one against Michael Keane. Vardy created enough space to dink it over Pickford. The ball clipped the top of the crossbar, though, and went out of play.</p>



<p>Culminating the first half was another glorious chance. After a handball in his own box by Keane, Jordan Pickford saved a tame shot from James Maddison. </p>



<h5>Everton finds a way back</h5>



<p>Leicester would rue that penalty miss almost instantly. Just ten minutes into the second half, Everton leveled the game. McNeil played a high cross in toward Calvert-Lewin, the centerpiece of Everton’s advances. Wout Faes and Söyüncü challenged Calvert-Lewin in the air. However, the deflection ballooned over to Alex Iwobi. Iwobi calmly played the ball into the bottom left corner of the net on his first touch. It had to be a perfectly placed shot, too, as Iversen was near-unbeatable for much of the game.</p>



<p>For example, in the 75th minute, a defensive misplay by Söyüncü yielded a race to the ball between Iversen and Calvert-Lewin. The Danish shot-stopper put his body on the line to block Calvert-Lewin’s attempt and keep the game knotted at two.</p>



<p>With four minutes left in the 90, Iversen pulled off one more great save. Abdoulaye Doucoure let fly from just outside the 18-yard box to the lower right side of Iversen. A strong hand met the shot and repelled it wide.</p>



<h2>Leicester City and Everton both firmly in relegation battle</h2>



<p>The clubs at the bottom of the table now have just four games remaining. Both Leicester City and Everton have some challenging games on the way in. Leicester City has games against Fulham, Liverpool, Newcastle and West Ham. Everton, on the other hand, has Brighton, Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bournemouth. Comparatively, Leeds has a harder way home. Manchester City, Newcastle, West Ham and Tottenham are the last four games for Leeds, which could <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/leeds-considers-sacking-javi-gracia-after-another-blowout-loss-20230501-WST-431058.html">sack its manager soon</a>.</p>



<p>It should be an exciting couple of weeks as the Premier League season comes to a close.</p>

<p>New Everton manager Sean Dyche has revealed that the club will be going to interesting lengths to study Dominic Calvert-Lewin and his injury crisis. The Toffees boss told reporters on Thursday that the striker’s car, mattress and sleep patterns are currently under investigation.</p>



<p>Calvert-Lewin has missed 13 total matches during the current campaign due to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/08/04/everton-lose-calvert-lewin-to-injury-for-six-weeks/">various injury setbacks</a>. This comes after the forward was sidelined for 23 games last season, as well. He has suffered two somewhat serious injuries to his toe and knee during this stretch; however, Calvert-Lewin has also missed matches due to other issues.</p>



<h5>Dyche covering all bases in attempt to keep forward fit</h5>



<p>“I’ve got to learn about his history, his physiological history. I’ve got to learn what his body will and won’t take, which is what we are trying to do now,” Dyche <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/feb/16/everton-assess-dominic-calvert-lewins-physiological-history-after-latest-injury" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a>. “We’re speaking to him, the medics, the sports scientists, looking at the stats, training programs, distance covered, high-speed running, how many [kilometers] in a week, what’s his diet like, what’s his lifestyle like, what car does he drive, what mattress does he use, how many hours does he sleep a night?”</p>



<p>“That’s learning about people,” continued the coach. “The biggest learning is what is in here [points to his head] and that’s the hard part. I’ll get all the information I can and then share it with him. That’s the process for every player, by the way, not just him.”</p>

<h2>Calvert-Lewin injury rules striker out of key game</h2>



<p>Calvert-Lewin injured his hamstring during Dyche’s first match in charge of the club. Despite the victory against <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a>, Everton are still currently in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> relegation zone. The Merseyside club will now have to soldier on without their star striker for the near future. Calvert-Lewin has been ruled out of the team’s massive match with Leeds at the weekend.</p>



<p>Leeds are currently just one point ahead of Everton in the standings. A loss by the Toffees would be a devastating blow to their survival hopes.</p>

Despite the loss and damages sustained, the season could have started on a worse note.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">With no recognizable striker and injuries across the board, Everton succumbed to Jorginho’s stoppage time penalty in the first half. Frank Lampard, who took over at Goodison Park midway through the previous campaign, fell to his former playing and managerial side.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Fans in Goodison Park witnessed a side who worked hard. Yet, Everton left much to be desired. This is particularly true in the final third, where a lack of quality hampered the Toffees.</span></p>
<h3>Everton battling injuries already</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Dominic Calvert-Lewin is unavailable through injury. Plus, it appears as if Frank Lampard phased Solomon Rondon out of consideration. Therefore, Anthony Gordon earned the role as lone striker in the Premier League opener for Everton. Traditionally a midfielder, the Englishman had flashes of talent under difficult conditions a season ago. Back then, he played as an attacking midfielder. The role of striker does not suit his strengths. Clearly, it was a necessary decision for Lampard.</span></p>
<p>Defensively, Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina look set for a spell on the sidelines through injury. Moreover, <a href="https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/everton-ben-godfrey-injury-update-27689827" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Godfrey’s issues seem longer term</a>, an unfortunate occurrence for an already depleted side just one game in.</p>
<p>On the brighter side, new signing James Tarkowski should pair well with even newer arrival Conor Coady. Everton announced the loan signing of the English international who, at the age of 29, had extensive experience in the top flight. Tarkowski and Coady both have the benefit of experience.</p>

<p>The main issue now comes from handling the ball. The pair, alongside Michael Keane, are not exactly creative. In fact, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is likely better with the ball at his feet than the three center-backs in front of him. This limits how effectively Everton can get the ball forward in a reliable manner.</p>
<p>Essentially, all signs point toward Everton playing direct with the ball to allow the defenders to just do the ‘dirty work’ at the back.</p>
<h5>Inconsistent or unproven depth</h5>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">As you look up the pitch, Dwight McNeil arrived from Burnley to add depth to the attacking midfield. Previously, Gordon put in good shifts in this spot. Other names in that area of the field, Demarai Gray, Andros Townsend and Alex Iwobi, are much more inconsistent.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Amadou Onana, a 20-year-old defensive midfielder, recently arrived at Goodison for <a href="https:\/\/www.transfermarkt.us/amadou-onana/transfers/spieler/485706" target="_blank" rel="noopener">just shy of $40 million</a> from Lille. Lampard hopes the Belgian can develop quickly into a versatile and impressive option in the center of the action. Despite the young age, Onana already has a cap for the Belgian first team and has Champions League experience at Lille.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Still, Everton requires a striker, and the injuries mounting do not help that need. The departure of Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur remains a major blow to the side. His quality and emotional impact on the team played a massive role in survival in the Premier League. His absence up top is noticeable as Everton have limited chances at scoring. In the first game hosting Chelsea, the Blues outclassed the Toffees in practically every statistical category.</span></p>
<h5>Transfer market remedies</h5>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Depth needs to be added. Currently, Calvert-Lewin is the only viable option when fit. Even then, he struggled in front of goal last season, and injuries limited him to 17 games with five goals.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Lampard will be well aware the finances aren’t as they were at Everton in previous seasons as the owners look to balance the books. He, and his scouting and recruitment team, will need to be clever with their identification of a suitable target to challenge as well as back up Calvert-Lewin. If this is not done, they face a long season ahead without the ability to really threaten sides in the final third.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">There is no hiding from the fact that they could well be in another relegation battle come the end of the season. Lampard has a big job ahead of him and needs to really step up to prove he is the man for the job.</span></p>

<p>There is no secret that Arsenal’s forwards currently have a scoring problem.</p>
<p>After all, the Gunners have managed just <a href="https:\/\/www.premierleague.com/clubs/1/Arsenal/results" target="_blank" rel="noopener">21 goals in 16 Premier League matches</a> so far this season. As of now, the club possesses two high-profile strikers up front.</p>
<p>However, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang appear on the rumor mill as potential departures from the Emirtates. Lacazette’s current contract is ending in the summer, and Aubameyang was recently <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2021/12/14/aubameyang-stripped-of-arsenal-captaincy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stripped of his captaincy</a> and is supposedly open to a move away from the Emirates.</p>
<p>Whether Arsenal make a move for a new striker in January or the summer, reinforcements in this position is clearly a top priority. Listed below are five potential options for manager Mikel Arteta and the Gunners.</p>
<h3>Arsenal’s potential forwards via the transfer market</h3>
<h5>Dusan Vlahovic</h5>
<p>Undoubtedly, Arsenal’s number one choice for a center forward in either January or the summer is Dusan Vlahovic.</p>
<p>The problem for the Gunners is that Vlahovic is every team’s top pick for a new striker. Media outlets link the current Fiorentina forward to Manchester City, Tottenham, Barcelona and pretty much any team in need of a young, promising forward. Competition, as well as the player’s preference, could prevent Arsenal from getting their man.</p>
<p>We have seen that this new regime can spend money, but clubs like Manchester City, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and PSG are tough to beat when they get involved in transfers.</p>
<p>The Serbia international has been a goal machine over the last calendar year. Since December 15th, 2020, Vlahovic has scored an astounding <a href="https:\/\/www.transfermarkt.us/du-scaron-an-vlahovic/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/357498" target="_blank" rel="noopener">37 goals in just 46 total matches</a> for Fiorentina. The combination of his goal record and the fact that he’s just 21 makes for plenty of gossip surrounding his future. Vlahovic will almost certainly depart Florence at some point in 2022.</p>
<p>However, Arsenal need some luck to land the striker ahead of other clubs.</p>
<h5>Jonathan David</h5>

<p>If Vlahovic is Arsenal’s top target, Jonathan David could very well be their plan B. The Lille forward is currently <a href="https:\/\/supersport.com/football/france/top-scorers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leading Ligue 1 with 11 goals</a> during the current campaign. Also just 21, David has managed to score 24 French league goals in just 55 matches since his arrival from Gent in 2020.</p>
<p>Able to play at the center forward position or as a second striker, the Canada international is a very dynamic player. Along with scoring goals, he also passes well and even helps out in defense with pressures that potentially lead to turnovers. Certainly, Arteta and the Arsenal will be aware of David’s ability outside of scoring goals.</p>
<p>As with everyone else on this list, the Gunners will have competition in their striker search. Liverpool, PSG, and West Ham share interest in David. Previously, the Canadian spoke of his dreams Although David as previously stated that he grew up dreaming of a move to Arsenal or Barcelona. If the Gunners miss out on Vlahovic, David could be a decent, and cheaper, alternative with a market value of about <a href="https:\/\/www.transfermarkt.us/jonathan-david/profil/spieler/533738" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$40 million</a>.</p>
<h5>Dominic Calvert-Lewin</h5>
<p>A move from one Premier League side to another is a polarizing option for Arteta and company.</p>
<p><a href="https:\/\/www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1534782/arsenal-news-paul-merson-dominic-calvert-lewin-everton-premier-league" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arsenal fans appear to be split</a> on the possibility of Calvert-Lewin being a Aubameyang or Lacazette replacement. Those against the move point out Calvert-Lewin’s failure to be a true ‘elite’ goal-scorer. For instance, the England international failed to score more than 16 league goals in a season. Moreover, he is not quite as technically gifted as other potential options.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, Calvert-Lewin is still just 24. He is far removed from the player in danger of earning more yellow cards than scoring goals. The current Everton forward managed to score 19 Premier League goals in his last 36 appearances.</p>
<p>Calvert-Lewin would give the Gunners a formidable presence inside the box with his aerial ability and poacher mentality. However, the 6’2 target man may not be a good fit with Arteta’s preferred playing style. Arsenal have a more active, fluid style going forward. Currently, Arsenal ranks 17th in crosses into the box so far this season in the Premier League.</p>

<p>Alexander Isak burst on to the scene as the successor to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Sweden. However, some critics peggded him as a flop as he failed to impress at Borussia Dortmund.</p>
<p>Even then, his time at Real Sociedad proved to be a revelation for the now-22-year-old striker. Since the start of the 2020/21 season, Isak scored 20 goals in 48 LaLiga fixtures. Not a world-beater output, but it shows significant potential. Although he is scoring below expected this season, Isak possesses a rare combination of size, 6’4, and pace. He has just three league goals in 17 games this season for Real Sociedad.</p>
<p>In spite of his lackluster start to the current campaign, Arteta and the Arsenal front office tend to see out players for their potential. Potential is something ever-present in Isak. As is the case with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, questions of a potential fit with Arsenal could be raised. Yet, the 22-year-old striker is certainly talented, and his addition would be a welcome one among Arsenal’s forwards.</p>
<p>The Gunners could face competition from Liverpool and Spurs, among others, in approaching Isak in 2022.</p>

<p>Of all the players to possibly join Arsenal’s forwards, Joao Felix seems the most like a wild card.</p>
<p>Undeniably, Felix is one of the most-talented young players in all of Europe. Gifted with footwork and intelligence with passing, his fit with Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid seems confusing. Simeone is one that does not seek out creativity, more so out-and-out defense into attack.</p>
<p>Statistically speaking, Felix never really racked up the goals and assists many predicted during his time in Spain. Regardless, Felix is not a typical center forward. In fact, he can mold into different attacking positions. That could be up front alone or as a second striker or occupying the flanks. We all know how much Arteta likes versatile players to fit the passing style of play.</p>
<p>The only issue with a potential deal for Felix would be competition. Much like Vlahovic, Felix would be wanted by most of the big clubs around Europe. In fact, Manchester City, Manchester United, Barcelona, and Liverpool all have interest in signing the 22-year-old. Felix’s mammoth player wages potentially would not be much of an issue assuming the Gunners move on from Aubameyang.</p>
<p>A lot would have to happen for Arsenal to land Felix, but he should be near the top of Arteta’s wish list for Arsenal’s forwards.</p>

5 forwards Arsenal should target in the transfer window

<p><em>Editor: Ahead of a new season and a disappointing transfer window thus far as well as a new manager at the helm, Everton season ticket holder Matt Jones returns to share his Everton preview.</em></p>
<p>We all have them.</p>
<p>Those sleeps when we fade in and out of consciousness. We wake up groggy, unsure of what is real and what is not. We realize our subconscious conjures up some bizarre stories and realities.</p>
<p><span>Well, that’s a little bit like what Everton feel like at the moment.</span></p>
<p>In March 2020, a raucous Goodison Park jeered a VAR decision to overturn a last-gasp winner over Manchester United. Then-manager Carlo Ancelotti made steady headway in a stacked Premier League.</p>
<p><span>The stadium was ablaze with emotion and rage in those final seconds. Here we stand in August 2021, 15 months removed from that day.</span></p>
<p><span>This Saturday will be the first time since that afternoon that Goodison will be full. The stands will look fantastic again. There will be a din around the place. Hope and anger and the quintessential Evertonian rancor again live on the horizon.</span></p>
<h3><span>Returning to a different Everton</span></h3>
<p><span>Ancelotti is out as manager, resigning at the end of the 2020-21 campaign. His replacement is the man who guided Everton’s biggest rival to their greatest night in its history. Rafael Benitez, who most recently managed Dalian Pro in the Chinese Super League, takes over at Goodison.</span></p>
<p>Benitez’s Everton is changed from Ancelotti’s 15 months ago, too.</p>
<p><span>James Rodriguez is part of the first-team squad. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has developed into a high-class forward. Everton is using digital season tickets and COVID-19 spot checks throughout Goodison. And there’s now a countdown on Goodison too, with work having started on a three-year build for a <a href="https:\/\/www.toffeeweb.com/season/21-22/news/41108.html" rel="noopener" target="_blank">new stadium down at Bramley-Moore dock</a>.</span></p>
<p><span>As one can imagine, a day out from their long-awaited return to a full Goodison, emotions are mixed among Everton supporters.</span></p>
<p><span>Like every set of fans in the country, Toffees have missed the match day. The pandemic and subsequent restrictions snatched tradition and passion from millions.</span></p>
<p><span>Football is an anchor to certain people who you wouldn’t see otherwise. As you get older and life flings more responsibilities at you, free time is precious. Going the match is almost immune from that. It’s untouchable.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p><span>Every couple of weeks you can see friends, have a drink and scream at 11 lads in royal blue. And it’s just accepted.</span></p>
<p><span>But what kind of Everton team will supporters bellow at when they dust off their seats at Goodison on Saturday?</span></p>
<h3>Benitez lackluster in Everton Preview</h3>
<p><span>Hopes are not high around Everton at the moment. After tanking in the second half of last season – they were second on Boxing Day and eventually finished in 10th – and losing Ancelotti unexpectedly to Real Madrid, their plans for the summer were tossed into disarray.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p><span>While there were no standout candidates to step into the void the Italian left, few anticipated they’d opt for Benitez.</span></p>
<p><span>Not only is he a figure forever tied with Liverpool, he’s a coach that’s arguably past his best. Since leaving Anfield in 2010, Benitez owns a mixed record of success. His previous role with Dalian Professional showed signs of a manager winding down his career on a healthy, large contract.</span></p>

<p>Everton cannot afford Benitez patience because of his name. In fact, fans made their presence heard at the most recent Everton preview match. The 4-0 thumping at the hands of Manchester United drew ire from those in attendance. To boot, Benitez must deal with a number of problems regarding lineups and rosters.</p>
<p><span>But Everton have obviously seen something in him.&nbsp;</span></p>
<h3>Limited Transfer Action</h3>
<p><span>With the club spending a total of £2 million on three players this summer, perhaps they see a dependable presence who will keep the club in the middle of the Premier League. There’s a new stadium on the way after all and those don’t come cheap.</span></p>
<p><span>The futures of Rodriguez and Moise Kean are up in the air. Richarlison just returned to the club following his exploits in the Olympics and Copa America with Brazil. Calvert-Lewin missed the Everton preview at Old Trafford with an injury.</span></p>
<p><span>Factor in the major gaps in the squad – Everton, amazingly, still haven’t signed a right-back to offer competition to Seamus Coleman – and there is potential for this season to go wrong. And with Liverpool-legend Benitez at the helm, it could go spectacularly wrong.</span></p>
<p>In terms of positivity, Benitez brings heightened organization and conditioning compared to Ancelotti. <a href="https:\/\/www.evertonfc.com/fixtures" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A favorable fixture list</a> certainly helps to boost morale and momentum as well.</p>
<p><span>Honestly, given the way things have gone at Everton in recent years, nothing would be a surprise.</span></p>
<p><span>Here’s hoping that come May, we will not be wishing it was another bad dream.</span></p>
