
<p>A 15-year-old girl was injured during a Carabao Cup match between <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">Manchester City</a> and <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/liverpool-tv-schedule/">Liverpool</a> on Thursday.  The young fan was <a href="https:\/\/www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-manchester-64068747" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reportedly</a> treated at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester with a head injury.</p>



<p>Area police are investigating the issue and have also made additional arrests.  One man was arrested for a separate racially charged incident at the stadium.  Two other fans were apprehended after bringing fireworks into the arena as well.</p>



<h2>Police reviewing video and assessing the incident</h2>



<p>Greater Manchester Police match commander, Supt Gareth Parkin, issued a statement on the mess.  “We are aware of a number of objects, including coins and a smoke bomb, that were thrown during the match,” <a href="https:\/\/www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-manchester-64068747" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Parkin.  “We will be investigating the incidents and reviewing CCTV from the night.”</p>



<p>“Clearly throwing objects in a confined area can be dangerous, and have serious and sometimes devastating consequences.”</p>



<h2>City and Liverpool disappointed by events</h2>



<p>The two clubs have released a joint statement regarding the problems at last night’s game.  “Manchester City FC, Liverpool FC and the Chairs from our supporter groups have worked together in recent weeks to remind fans of our expectations and both clubs would like to thank the vast majority of fans for their behavior at last night’s Carabao Cup match at the Etihad Stadium,” <a href="https:\/\/www.mancity.com/news/club/club-statement-liverpool-manchester-city-63807395" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">read</a> the statement.</p>



<p>“It is however hugely disappointing that there were a number of incidents during last night’s match that are wholly unacceptable.  These incidents will be fully investigated, reported to the police and the individuals who are found to be responsible will be subject to the sanction process of their respective club.”</p>



<p>As the joint statement claimed, the two clubs previously <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/liverpool-and-manchester-city-hold-meeting-to-ease-tension-20221216-WST-412513.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">scheduled a meeting</a> to settle tensions.  There have been multiple incidents involving fans during matches between the clubs in recent years.  Thursday’s problems unfortunately mare an <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/man-city-advance-in-carabao-cup-after-beating-liverpool-20221222-WST-413275.html">excellent game</a> on the field.  City eventually won the match 3-2 and advanced to the Carabao Cup quarterfinals.</p>

<p><a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">Manchester City</a> booked their place in the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/league-cup-tv-schedule/">Carabao Cup</a> quarterfinals on Thursday night by beating Liverpool, 3-2. It was a thrilling match involving five different goal-scorers. However, it was City’s midfield maestro, Kevin De Bruyne, who ran the show.</p>



<p>Prior to the match, tensions were high between the two clubs. In fact, both teams, along with fan groups, <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/liverpool-and-manchester-city-hold-meeting-to-ease-tension-20221216-WST-412513.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">scheduled a meeting</a> during the World Cup break to ease pressure surrounding the game. Outside of one small dust up between Fabinho and Rodri in the second half, tempers did not flare much on the pitch. Both players were booked for their parts in the shoving match.</p>



<h5>Haaland strikes yet again</h5>



<p>Superstar striker Erling Haaland predictably opened the scoring in the game. And it took him less than 10 minutes to do so. The City forward got the better of Joe Gomez to net his 24th goal of the current campaign. Haaland has only featured in 18 total games this season.</p>



<p>Liverpool quickly fought back with a goal just 10 minutes later though. Fabio Carvalho passed the ball neatly into the back of the net after good work from James Milner and Joel Matip.</p>



<p>Riyad Mahrez gave City the lead once again just two minutes into the second half. The Algeria international scored thanks to a fantastic first touch and perfect finish into the bottom corner of the net. </p>



<p>However, Liverpool once again quickly scored to level the game again just one minute later. Mohamed Salah scored one of his easiest goals of the current campaign after a nice run down the flank by Darwin Núñez. All the Egyptian had to do was <a href="https:\/\/twitter.com/ESPNFC/status/1606034560046616577" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">direct the shot</a> into a wide open City goal.</p>



<h2>Aké finds City winner over Liverpool in Carabao Cup</h2>



<p>City regained the lead, this time for good, just 10 minutes later. Center back Nathan Ake placed a header back across Liverpool’s goal and into the net. De Bruyne put in a perfect cross for the goal. </p>

<p>The Belgium international may not have scored, but he did pick up two assists in the match. Along with the assists, De Bruyne also racked up five total key passes as well.</p>



<p>Liverpool’s loss means that there will be a new Carabao Cup winner this season. The Reds previously collected the cup back in February. Prior to Liverpool’s success last season, City won four consecutive Carabao Cup titles.</p>

<p><a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-united-tv-schedule/">Manchester United</a> advanced to the quarterfinals of the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/league-cup-tv-schedule/">Carabao Cup</a> on Wednesday night. The Red Devils took care of Championship side Burnley, 2-0. Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford supplied the goals for Erik ten Hag’s side. </p>



<p>Ten Hag will be pleased with their performance following a disappointing spell in Spain. United lost both of their friendlies against LaLiga opponents earlier in the month. However, Wednesday’s match saw much of their World Cup contingent back with the team.</p>



<h2>Manchester United uses eight World Cup players in Carabao Cup</h2>



<p>Five players that featured in the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/category/world-cup-2022/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">World Cup</a> started for ten Hag on the night. Three more players from the tournament also featured as substitutes. Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia, and Casemiro were all fit enough to make the starting XI. Although, short numbers at center back meant that Casemiro had to fill in at the position.</p>



<p>Burnley entered the game on a high. After all, the Clarets are currently <a href="https:\/\/www.skysports.com/championship-table" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">top of the Championship</a> and had only lost two total matches entering Old Trafford. Manager Vincent Kompany returned to Manchester after spending 11 seasons with City before departing in 2019.</p>



<h5>Eriksen and Rashford provide the goals</h5>



<p>Eriksen got the scoring starting for United with an easy finish inside of the six yard box. Defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka made a fantastic play to keep the ball on the pitch and squared it to an open Eriksen. The right back has not received much playing time under ten Hag, but was excellent against Burnley.</p>



<p>Rashford doubled United’s lead in the second half thanks to a long run and neat finish. The England international dribbled the ball 60 yards through Burnley’s defense and slotted home a shot into the far corner of the net. </p>

<p>The visitors did, however, have a few opportunities later in the match. Darko Churlinov and Ashley Barnes both had big chances through on goal but failed to hit the target. The defeat ends a four-game winning streak for Burnley.</p>



<p>Premier League side Brighton &amp; Hove Albion did not have the same luck as United on Wednesday. The Seagulls were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in a penalty shootout with League One side Charlton Athletic.</p>

<p>Newcastle boss Eddie Howe put out a very strong starting XI for his team’s <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/league-cup-tv-schedule/">Carabao Cup</a> matchup on Tuesday against Bournemouth. The Magpies faced fellow <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> side Bournemouth at home in their first official game since the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/category/world-cup-2022/">World Cup</a> break. Howe had five players at the tournament in Qatar and all five started the game on Tuesday.</p>



<p>Bruno Guimaraes, Fabian Schar, Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson, and Nick Pope were all at the World Cup this month. The quintet also traveled back to England following their respective team’s defeats at the tournament. Prior to the match, Howe spoke to reporters about the possibly of his five World Cup players possibly playing. </p>



<p>“We will wait and see,” <a href="https:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-united-cup-clash-stars-25785391" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">claimed</a> Howe. “I spoke with the international lads when they came back. Kieran [Trippier] and Nick [Pope] were very keen to play, I think those conversations are important. I will continue those conversations with the other lads.”</p>



<h5>Howe’s decision shows ambition</h5>



<p>Howe eventually made the late call to start all five key players. Newcastle’s coach clearly wanted to make a statement to the team and fans that he wants silverware this season. The bold decision paid off as all five World Cup players played a key role in securing the win on Tuesday.</p>



<p>Newcastle beat Bournemouth 1-0 in the game with Pope making a few solid saves in the second half. Center back Schar helped Pope collect a clean sheet on the night and even had a few shots on goal as well. Trippier provided the ball that eventually landed in the back of the net.</p>



<p>The England fullback put in a good cross into the box in the 67th minute and Bournemouth defender Adam Smith accidentally headed it passed his own goalkeeper. Wilson was also very bright, particularly in the first half. The England forward had three shots and even scored, but the goal was ruled out for an offside in the build up.</p>

<p>Brazil’s Guimaraes, however, ran the show from the middle of the pitch. The silky midfielder led the team in completed passes and dribbles, while also making three successful tackles as well.</p>



<p>Newcastle are hoping to continue their winning ways in the Premier League, too. They are currently third in the table and are serious contenders for a <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/">Champions League</a> place. The Magpies are trying to qualify for a top European competition for the first time since 2003.</p>

<p><a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/liverpool-tv-schedule/">Liverpool</a> and <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">Manchester City</a> have attempted to calm tension between the two teams ahead of a matchup next week. The clubs have a recent history of hostile incidents involving fans during games.</p>



<p>City boss Pep Guardiola previously made claims that Liverpool fans threw coins at him during their October match. The Reds recently <a href="https:\/\/theathletic.com/3956566/2022/12/01/liverpool-guardiola-man-city-coin/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">closed their investigation</a> into the allegations without charging any fans. City also said that their team bus was attacked as they departed Anfield following the game. This was the second time that the reigning <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> champions made the claim. They also made similar suggestions during a 2018 <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/">Champions League</a> matches up as well.</p>



<h2>Liverpool and Manchester City meeting calms toxic tension</h2>



<p><em><a href="https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2022/12/16/liverpool-manchester-city-hold-peace-talks-end-toxic-atmosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Telegraph</a></em> is reporting that senior officials from both sides recently met with fan groups to discuss the issue. Fans of each side were present. City Matters, the team’s elected fan community, represented the Sky Blues. Then, the Liverpool Supporters’ Board made an appearance.</p>



<p>The report suggests that while both sides acknowledged that the main culprits came from a small minority of people, they also agreed to revamp the atmosphere inside the stadiums. The meeting reached out to season ticket holders about the situation. They also organized certain activities before the match for more control.</p>



<h5>Fan representatives issue joint statement</h5>



<p>A joint statement between the two fan groups emerged, as well. “Over the past five or six seasons, our matches have been some of the most entertaining in the world,” <a href="https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2022/12/16/liverpool-manchester-city-hold-peace-talks-end-toxic-atmosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">read</a> the statement.</p>



<p>“However, we can’t ignore the recent poor behavior from a small number of fans on both sides, which has often overshadowed the results and the quality of football on show.“</p>



<p>“That’s why we were pleased to sit down with both clubs to improve relations and make commitments to working together to improve fan behavior at future matches.”</p>



<p>The latest installment of the rivalry will take place in Manchester on Thursday, December 22nd. While not a Premier League or Champions League match, the game will determine who advances to the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/league-cup-tv-schedule/">Carabao Cup</a> quarterfinals.</p>

The Reds narrowly edged Derby County earlier this week to advance to the fourth round. Backup goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher made three saves during the penalty shootout to help his club move on to the next round.</p>



<p>City, on the other hand, beat fellow <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> powerhouse <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/chelsea-tv-schedule/">Chelsea </a>2-0 at the Etihad Stadium in the previous round of the competition. Goals from Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez guided the Citizens past the struggling Blues. </p>



<h5>Big Premier League clubs are dropping from the competition</h5>



<p>The matchup means that there will be a maximum of just two Premier League ‘Big Six’ teams in the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup. <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a>, Chelsea, and <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/tottenham-tv-schedule/">Tottenham Hotspur</a> were all knocked out of the tournament this week.</p>



<p><a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-united-tv-schedule/">Manchester United</a> were also in the fourth round draw as well. The Red Devils will host Championship side Burnley. United previously advanced after winning a thrilling 4-2 match at Old Trafford against Aston Villa. In 2021/22, Burnley suffered relegation from the Premier League. However, under <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/2022/08/03/vincent-kompany-brings-a-fresh-change-to-the-tactics-at-burnley/">new boss Vincent Kompany</a>, Burnley is flying. In fact, the club sits <a href="https:\/\/www.skysports.com/championship-table" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atop the Championship table</a> with 38 points after 20 games.</p>

<h5>Carabao Cup schedule could be an issue</h5>



<p>The schedule for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup is just days after the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/category/world-cup-2022/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">World Cup</a> ends. Premier League matches return on Boxing Day. Therefore, these cup games most likely happen on or around Dec. 21. The 2022 World Cup Final in Qatar will take place on Dec. 18.</p>



<p>New Wolves boss Julien Lopetegui will finally get to coach the club for the first time during this competition. The West Midlands team drew League Two side Gillingham. The Gills are currently the lowest-ranked team still competing in the Carabao Cup.</p>

<p>Three of the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League’s</a> biggest clubs in London dropped out of the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/league-cup-tv-schedule/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Carabao Cup</a>. <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a>, <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/chelsea-tv-schedule/">Chelsea</a>, and <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/tottenham-tv-schedule/">Tottenham Hotspur</a> all suffered defeat in the third round of the competition on Wednesday. The tournament is essentially the second-tiered knockout cup competition in England and Wales. </p>



<p>The Gunners entered their match with Brighton on Wednesday making 10 changes to their team that beat Chelsea at the weekend. Arsenal went up early against visiting Brighton at the Emirates Stadium. Reiss Nelson made a fantastic run and fed Eddie Nketiah going forward. The striker put his curling shot past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0 after just 20 minutes. However, this would be Arsenal’s last goal of the game.</p>



<p>Danny Welbeck converted a penalty past Karl Hein just seven minutes after the opening goal. Kaoru Mitoma and Tariq Lamptey added two more second half strikes for the visitors to put the game out of reach. The victory was the team’s third-consecutive win in all competitions.</p>



<h2>North London clubs fall in Carabao Cup</h2>



<p>Spurs traveled to Nottingham Forest in another matchup of Premier League teams. The visitors were second best for most of the match. While the game was 0-0 at the halftime break, defender Renan Lodi put Forest ahead early in the second half. </p>

<p>The hosts doubled their lead just seven minutes later after Jesse Lingard headed past Fraser Forster. It was Lingard’s first goal of the current campaign. Although Forest went down to ten men in the 76th minute, Spurs couldn’t find a way to create real opportunities going forward. The match ended with a 2-0 victory for the hosts.</p>



<h5>chelsea stumble yet again</h5>



<p>Chelsea undoubtedly had the toughest matchup of the trio. The west London club had to travel to face reigning Premier League champions <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">Manchester City</a>. City started on a front foot, but could not find the back of the net in the first half. Nevertheless, the talented team finally scored as Riyad Mahrez converted in the 53rd minute.</p>



<p>The champions doubled their lead just five minutes later thanks to a Julian Alvarez strike. Chelsea could not score despite putting 15 shots towards the City goal. The Blues have now lost three of their last four matches in all competitions.</p>



<p><a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/liverpool-tv-schedule/">Liverpool</a> nearly joined the other big clubs from departing the Carabao Cup early. The Reds managed to squeak by Derby County on penalty kicks. Caoimhín Kelleher saved three of Derby’s penalties, with the final block coming against Everton loanee Lewis Dobbin.</p>
