<h3>Chile History</h3>



<p>The Federación de Fútbol de Chile was founded in 1895. The first match of the national team took place in 1910, and the nation was one of the four founding members of CONMEBOL, alongside Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. These four contested the first South American Championship – today known as Copa América, in 1916. </p>



<p>Chile also participated in the first ever World Cup in 1930, held in neighboring Uruguay. The nation also holds two dubious World Cup firsts: the first ever missed penalty kick in a World Cup (1930), and the first red card in a World Cup (1974).</p>



<p>An incident during a 1990 World Cup qualifying game led to Chile being banned from the qualifiers for 1994. Keeper Roberto Rojas faked an injury from a thrown firework, and the team left the pitch in protest. It turned out the player was never hit, Chile was given a forfeit in the game, and Rojas banned for life (the ban was later lifted).</p>



<p>In more positive happenings, Chile hosted the 1962 World Cup, and placed third. This was their best finish ever in the tournament. In their most recent of nine World  Cup appearances – 1998, 2010, and 2014 – Chile made the round of 16.</p>



<p>Chile won back-to-back Copa América titles in 2015 and 2016. 2015 was as hosts of the traditional tournament, and 2016 was the special expanded “Centenario” edition held in the United States.</p>



<p>The aging, but active, players Gary Medel, Alexis Sánchez, Claudio Bravo and Arturo Vidal top the all-time caps list for Chile. The aforementioned Sánchez is the all-time goals leader for <em>La Roja</em>.</p>

<p>Santiago (AFP) – Argentine Eduardo Berizzo is the new coach of the Chilean national football team, replacing Uruguay’s Martin Lasarte, the South American country’s football federation announced on Thursday.</p>
<p>Lasarte leaves the job after 15 months having failed to guide Chile to the World Cup in Qatar later this month.</p>
<p>“We have a coach. It is Eduardo Berizzo, who is known to our football and has a vast international experience,” said Chilean Football Federation president Pablo Milad on the body’s Twitter account.</p>
<p>The 52-year-old Berizzo was previously part of another Argentine coach, Marcelo Bielsa’s Chile backroom staff between 2007 and 2010, his first experience in coaching after hanging up his boots.</p>
<p>A former center-back he won 13 caps for Argentina and was twice part of the country’s Copa America squads, although he only ever appeared in one match.</p>
<p>He played for River Plate and Marseille in a career that took him from his homeland to Mexico, France and Spain.</p>
<p>Berizzo enjoyed great success coaching in Chile, leading O’Higgins to the first title in their history in 2013.</p>
<p>He coached in Spain between 2014 and 2018, before taking charge of Paraguay in 2019, but was fired in October 2021 after a 4-0 World Cup qualifying loss to Bolivia.</p><p></p>

<p>Saint Petersburg (AFP) – Midfielder Arturo Vidal says Chile can prove they are the world’s best team, and throw down a marker for next year’s World Cup, by beating Germany in Sunday’s Confederations Cup final.</p>
<p>Copa America champions Chile take on World Cup holders Germany in St Petersburg with the teams having already drawn 1-1 in the group stages.</p>
<p>Alexis Sanchez’s early strike for Chile was cancelled out by Lars Stindl when the teams met in Kazan ten days ago.</p>
<p>Chile are looking for their third international trophy in three years after winning both the 2015 and 2016 Copa America titles — beating Argentina in the final on penalties on both occasions.</p>
<p>Having knocked Euro 2016 winners Portugal out of the Confed Cup in Wednesday’s semi-final, Vidal says beating Germany’s young guns will prove Chile are the best.</p>
<p>“We have proven our value, we have beaten Argentina and Portugal, the European champions,” said Vidal.</p>
<p>“If we win tomorrow, we will prove we are the best team in the world.</p>
<p>“We have reached this final with our spirit and attitude — this is a waiting room for the World Cup — and if we win tomorrow, that will show where we are.</p>
<p>“We still have to qualify for the World Cup, but we have a lot of energy and want to prove ourselves.”</p>
<p>Chile showed their penalty shoot-out pedigree again in the Kazan semi, as goalkeeper Claudio Bravo saved all three Portugal spot-kicks after it finished goalless after extra-time.</p>
<p>Despite Bravo’s heroics, Germany head coach Joachim Loew says he has no fear of a shoot-out — understandable given Germany’s record of having not lost on spot-kicks at a major tournament since 1976.</p>
<p>While Chile played 120 minutes in their semi-final, Germany will be slightly fresher having beaten Mexico 4-1 in normal time on Thursday.</p>
<p>Sanchez scored after just six minutes in the group-stage clash and Germany captain Julian Draxler says his team need to be more focused.</p>
<p>“We need to be 100 percent for the full 90 minutes,” said Draxler.</p>
<p>“We have grown over the tournament and need to really go into the one-on-ones, one of Chile’s strengths, but getting the trophy would be the best reward.”</p>
<p>Germany were 2-0 up after just eight minutes of their semi-final against Mexico and Loew wants another bright start.</p>
<p>“It will be very important to control the match early on,” said Loew.</p>
<p>“Chile will try to build up as much pressure as possible, as they have done so far, so we need to see that we are able to liberate ourselves and create space.</p>
<p>“They are very good at moving the ball fast, so I hope we have the agility and speed we showed against Mexico.”</p>
<p>A German is set to finish as the tournament’s top scorer with Leon Goretzka and Timo Werner both on three goals, while Stindl has netted twice.</p>
<p>Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi says Loew’s side – the youngest Confed Cup squad with an average age of just over 24 – have proven youth is no obstacle to success.</p>
<p>“They have a set of players with a lot of experience, despite being very young,” said Pizzi, using Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich, 22, and 25-year-old Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi as examples.</p>
<p>“(Joshua) Kimmich is a central pillar at one of the best teams in the world.</p>
<p>“Mustafi was part of the 2014 World Cup winning team and plays in the Premier League, it makes them a formidable opponent.</p>
<p>“We are ready to face them on that level and will try to make sure our work-rate is higher than theirs.”</p><p></p>

<p>Montevideo (AFP) – Chile face a must-win showdown with fierce regional rivals Peru on Tuesday as the South American champions aim to make up lost ground after a stumbling start to their 2018 World Cup qualification campaign.</p>
<p>After a 3-0 thrashing by Ecuador in Quito on Thursday, the Chileans limped back to Santiago a full five points adrift of the qualifying places in South America’s marathon battle for World Cup berths.</p>
<p>Chile, the dominant force in South America over the past two years with back-to-back wins in the 2015 and 2016 Copa Americas, still have plenty of time to turn their campaign around with nine games left.</p>
<p>But anything less than a win against Peru on Tuesday risks leaving them with a mountain to climb if they are to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.</p>
<p>“We need to score goals, and we need to win because we’re playing at home. Winning is the only option for us now,” said Chile midfielder Marcelo Diaz, who is still smarting from last week’s drubbing by Ecuador.</p>
<p>“We lost, we were very bad, played a lousy game and that’s all I can say,” Diaz said. “All we can do now is look to Tuesday to try and change the story of what we are doing,” the Celta Vigo player added.</p>
<p>Veteran defender Gonzalo Jara admitted the team was baffled by its failure to take more than one point from its last three games, a scrappy 0-0 home draw against Bolivia, one of the weakest teams in the qualifying competition.</p>
<p>“We’ve not being playing well as a collective. We just aren’t creating the chances that we normally do,” Jara said.</p>
<p>The only upside for Chile is that Peru, who have not won in Santiago since 1985, have barely performed any better.</p>

<p>– Historical enmity –</p>

<p>The Peruvians, who held Argentina to a 2-2 draw in Lima on Thursday, are in eighth place after nine games, three points behind Chile.</p>
<p>The high stakes nature of Tuesday’s meeting adds fuel to the “Clasico del Pacific” one of South America’s most potent footballing rivalries, with the Andean neighbours having a long historical enmity that dates back to the 1879-1883 War of the Pacific.</p>
<p>Football has often been a bone of contention, with differences of opinion remaining to this day over which country was responsible for the invention of the bicycle kick.</p>
<p>Chileans insist they invented it in a 1914 match, christening the overhead volley as “La Chilena.” Peruvians maintain it was fact first attempted in the port city of Callao in the late 1800s, being given the name, “La Chalaca.”</p>
<p>Elsewhere Tuesday, Brazil will aim to maintain their sparkling form under new coach Tite, still buoyant after a 5-0 drubbing of Bolivia last week that has left commentators breathlessly talking about a renaissance of “jogo bonito” (“the beautiful game”).</p>
<p>Brazil travel to winless Venezuela and on form should have no problem picking up another three points to keep the pressure firmly on group leaders Uruguay, who face an awkward away game against fourth placed Colombia.</p>
<p>“Our attack was very fluid, creating opportunities. It was a great performance and we must try and continue on this path, and keep improving in every game,” said Brazil’s Filipe Luis, one of the goalscorers in the defeat of Bolivia.</p>
<p>Argentina meanwhile will aim to get back to winning ways after being held to a second consecutive draw in Thursday’s 2-2 battle with Peru.</p>
<p>The Argentinians, who will be without injured captain Lionel Messi once more, host Paraguay in Cordoba.</p><p></p>

<p>Chile named Argentine ex-striker Juan Antonio Pizzi as their new national football coach on Friday after his compatriot Jorge Sampaoli quit in acrimony.</p>
<p>The Chilean football association ANFP said in a statement it struck a deal to hire Pizzi until the 2018 World Cup in Russia.</p>
<p>He was until now coach of Leon de Mexico and will take up the Chile job next week.</p>
<p>Pizzi also holds Spanish nationality, having played for Barcelona and Valencia.</p>
<p>“We are very satisfied with the arrival of Juan Antonio Pizzi. He is a professional who inspires great confidence. He has a proven career record,” said ANFP president Arturo Salah in the statement.</p>
<p>The ANFP added that he “is the right person to safeguard and continue the work of the Chile national team and to maintain its competitiveness of recent years.”</p>
<p>Sampaoli quit this month, six months after leading the country to its first Copa America title.</p>
<p>He led a golden generation of Chile stars such as Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal of Bayern Munich.</p>
<p>Sampaoli accused the federation of holding him hostage over a $6 million (5.5 million euro) buyout clause in his contract which had two years to run.</p>
