<h5>History of Bristol City FC</h5>



<p>Bristol City’s history dates back centuries. The club launched in 1894 as Bristol South End. Quickly, Bristol City found success and earned promotion to the English Football League at the turn of the 20th century. Bristol was the only club from the south of England to finish in the top two in the top flight before World War I when it finished just behind Newcastle in 1906/07. Three seasons later, Bristol City reached the final of the FA Cup. It lost to Manchester United in that game, and Bristol City has not returned to the cup final since then.</p>



<p>However, Bristol City suffered exile from the English top flight for decades. From 1911 to 1976, Bristol City bounced between divisions failing to find consistency in form. The 65-year absence from the top division ended when Bristol City finally clinched promotion in the 1975/76 campaign. The Robins spent four seasons in the first division. It finished in the bottom half of the table each season. In 1979/80, Bristol City suffered relegation. The next two seasons also led to relegation as Bristol City plummeted into the fourth division. The 1979/80 season was the last Bristol spent in the English top flight.</p>



<p>Since then, Bristol City has bounced between the second and third divisions. Most recently, Bristol City has spent its last nine seasons in the Championship.</p>



<h2>Stadium and Rivalries</h2>



<p>Bristol City’s ground, Ashton Gate, underwent construction. Famously, one fan briefly had Ashton Gate in his backyard. While renovating the ground, Bristol City tore down its East Stand. That meant Ben Swift, colloquially known as <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/05/sports/soccer/east-end-shed-man-enjoys-a-mostly-unobstructed-view-at-bristol-city-fc.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">East End Shed Man</a>, had a perfect stadium view. That was brief, but it showed the character of the fans Bristol City has.</p>



<p>This is not to be confused with Bristol Rovers, the club’s crosstown rivals. As the eighth-largest city in England based on population, Bristol has no shortage of fans. However, Bristol City has had a bigger following compared to Bristol Rovers.</p>

<h4>Bristol City History</h4>



<p>Bristol City got going in 1894 in the Southern and Western Leagues. In 1902, they joined the Football League Second Division, winning their first title and promotion in 1906.</p>



<p>This early era coincided with some of the club’s greatest success. In just their first season in the top flight, they finished in second place. Sadly for generations of Robins faithful, this remains their best league finish over a century later.</p>



<p>A few seasons later, they reached the FA Cup Final, but also fell just short, losing 1-0 to Manchester United. </p>



<p>After relegation in 1911, it was a very long time before Bristol would see the first tier. In fact, it was not until 1976 that they again reached the First Division. Unlike the turn of the century era, this spell in the top flight was one of survival, never finishing higher than 13th in their four-year stint.</p>



<p>They’ve not returned to the English first tier since.</p>



<p>Interestingly, Bristol City have been champions of another country’s cup competition. For many years, border clubs were often invited to take place in the Welsh Cup. This was the case in 1933-34, and Bristol City won the tournament. They are one of ten English teams to have won the Welsh Cup.</p>



<p>Ashton Gate has been the home ground of Bristol City since 1904. Presently it seats 27,000 fans and is also home to the Bristol Bears Premiership Rugby team.</p>

<p>After almost three years in charge of Bristol City, the Championship club sacked manager Nigel Pearson on Monday. The Robins have lost five of their last seven games in the Championship. Pearson’s side sits 15th in the Championship table on 18 points after 14 games. It is nine points above the drop zone in the division.</p>



<p>Bristol hired Nigel Pearson in February 2021. He replaced Dean Holden, who started as a caretaker manager in 2019/20. At t the time Pearson took the reins at Bristol City, the club sat 15th in the table. Therefore, it is a fitting closure to his time with Bristol that the club is in 15th. In the three seasons Bristol finished with Nigel Pearson, he showed slight improvement. The club finished 19th, then 17th and 14th in the most recent campaign. That slight improvement was not enough for Bristol City.</p>



<p>Instead, the club said it was time for a change at Ashton Gate. Jon Lansdown, the club’s chairman, said a 2-0 defeat against Cardiff City was the last game for the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/leicester-city-sack-manager-nigel-pearson-20150630-CMS-143265.html">former Leicester City</a> and Watford manager. </p>



<p>“This was a difficult decision to make as we recognise and appreciate how much Nigel has done for the club over the past two and a half years on and off the pitch,” Lansdown said on the <a href="https://www.bcfc.co.uk/city-men-news/nigel-pearson-leaves-bristol-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bristol City website</a>.  </p>



<p>Jason Euell, one of the first-team coaches on Pearson’s staff, is also out of the club. Curtis Fleming is taking over the management of the side on a caretaker basis.</p>



<h2>Another Championship manager sacked</h2>

<p>Just 14 games into the season, Bristol City sacking Nigel Pearson is the sixth managerial change in the English second division this season. Some of the other managers to depart their clubs are Neil Warnock, John Eustace and Xisco Muñoz. Each of their clubs sits in the bottom half of the table except for Birmingham City, which parted ways with Eustace. It quickly <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/wayne-rooney-in-line-to-take-over-as-birmingham-city-manager-20231009-WST-461123.html">brought in Wayne Rooney</a> as his replacement.</p>



<p>Bristol City thanked Nigel Pearson for his efforts with Bristol City over the last several campaigns. </p>



<p>“Nigel is highly respected by the staff and players and has been very supportive of the academy structure and our women’s team. We all wanted Nigel to achieve our ambition to be promoted but, with our recent results, feel that now is the time to make a change to give the club the best possible chance of success.”</p>



<h2>Bristol City sacks Nigel Pearson to change club’s fortunes</h2>



<p>Bristol City has been in a period of stasis for the last several years. It has hovered between 19th and eighth in the Championship for each of the last eight seasons, and it appears to be on the same path this campaign. The last time Bristol City was in the top division of English soccer was in 1979/80. Bristol City sees this move as a chance to increase those odds. It may not be this season, but Bristol City has eyes for promotion at some point in the near future.</p>

<p>Six EFL (English Football League) clubs have teamed up to help combat their environmental impact when they travel. Bristol City, Bristol Rovers, Forest Green Rovers, Mansfield Town and Swindon Town have joined Millwall in the effort. The clubs will now help form the Sustainable Travel Charter.</p>



<p>The group will decide on ways to travel to and from matches in a more environmentally friendly way. Sustainable Travel Charter was formed by a charity called Pledgeball, along with the Football Supporters’ Association and the aforementioned clubs.</p>



<p>Pledgeball chief executive Katie Cross claims that there is a clear “elephant in the room” regarding soccer team travel. “Soccer clubs’ reliance on short-haul flights is a thorn in the side of their wider sustainability strategies,” <a href="https://www.millwallfc.co.uk/news/2023/october/11/millwall-leading-figures-in-new-/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> Cross.</p>



<p>“This charter seeks to address the elephant in the room and help clubs incorporate more sustainable travel practices into their operations and lead by example in showing fans and the public that climate action means walking the talk.”</p>



<h5>Several top-flight clubs previously under fire for short flights</h5>



<p><a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> teams have received heat recently for opting to fly to matches when driving would suffice. According to a report by the <em><a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/65017565" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BBC</a></em> in March, top-flight clubs took 81 separate domestic flights during a two-month stretch. </p>



<p><a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/nottingham-forest-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers/">Nottingham Forest</a> manager Steve Cooper also previously fielded questions regarding his club’s flight to face Blackpool in January. Forest team members took a 20-minute flight from Nottingham to Lancashire for the game. The distance between the two areas is about 135 miles. If taken by bus, the trip would have lasted just a couple of hours.</p>



<h2>Other EFL clubs embracing more environmental travel</h2>



<p>Meanwhile, Millwall’s chief financial officer Mark Fairbrother released a statement highlighting the importance of sustainability at the team. “Sustainability is a huge focal point of Millwall Football Club’s operations, with strong progress already being made to reduce waste, as well other eco-friendly initiatives,” <a href="https://www.millwallfc.co.uk/news/2023/october/11/millwall-leading-figures-in-new-/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proclaimed</a> Fairbrother.</p>



<p>Several other English teams are also in discussions with the Sustainable Travel Charter. There have been previous suggestions that flying to matches gives teams a competitive advantage. However, there has been no significant research to officially confirm these claims.</p>

Six EFL clubs have teamed up to help combat their environmental impact when they travel to and from domestic matches.
