Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku is reportedly on his way to Wolfsburg to sign a £20million deal with the Bundesliga club.

In the United Kingdom, Sky Bet has suspended betting on Lukaku joining Wolfsburg, so there appears to be some weight to the transfer rumor.

Lukaku, 21, has spent the last two seasons on loan away from Chelsea at West Brom and Everton respectively, scoring 32 goals in the process. Though some found his form, particularly under Roberto Martinez at Everton, encouraging, others raised questions of his potential to lead the line at Chelsea.

Lukaku has often reaffirmed his desire to start and feature regularly at Stamford Bridge, but Jose Mourinho has already brought in Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid, as well as announcing the signing of Didier Drogba on a one year deal earlier this week. With Fernando Torres still under contract, it certainly appears that there will be at least one departure from the Chelsea strike force.

The transfer is inextricably linked to the signing of Didier Drogba. Many saw Drogba’s arrival as a positive sign for the young Belgian, that he would learn and develop underneath the guidance of the Chelsea legend, but it could well be that the re-signing of the Ivorian shows Jose Mourinho’s lack of faith in Lukaku.

Everton were keen to acquire the services of Romelu Lukaku again, be it on another loan or on a permanent basis, but it is unlikely they will be able to match the fee that Wolfsburg has offered. The Germans seem to be in pole position for his signature, where he would reunite with fellow Belgian and ex Chelsea player, Kevin de Bruyne. Though in very early stages, it will be interesting to see how this rumor develops.
