<h5>Seattle Sounders History</h5>



<p>The Sounders have a rich history that predates MLS. The original Sounders played in the NASL from 1974 to 1983. They finished runners-up twice, in 1977 (lost to the Cosmos in Pelé’s last official match) and 1982 (also fell to New York).</p>



<p>A revival of the Sounders emerged in 1994 in the APSL (later A-League and now USL), and the team has played on ever since. These Sounders won the league four times, in 1995, ’96, ’05 and ’07. They also won the regular season crown on three occasions.</p>



<p>They would reach the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup three times, including in their last two seasons as a USL side, in 2007 and 2008. The club participated in the 1996 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup, finishing fourth.</p>



<p>In 2007, Seattle was announced as the 15th MLS franchise, and later in 2008, “Seattle Sounders FC” was unveiled as the name. This continuation was a watershed moment for MLS. The Sounders were the first team to carry over branding from an existing active club, effectively getting “promoted” to MLS ( when rebranding from the San Jose Clash to Earthquakes in 1999, that team was the first to revive an NASL team name in MLS). Since the Sounders, teams in Vancouver, Portland, Montréal, Orlando, Minnesota, Cincinnati, and Nashville have moved up from a lower league to join MLS, all keeping their existing club names.</p>



<h6>Immediate Success</h6>



<p>Seattle wasted no time in collecting silverware when they became a division one outfit. Fresh off their semifinals appearances as a USL team in 2007 and 2008, they won the U.S. Open Cup three years in a row in 2009, ’10 and ’11. They’d win it again in 2014, a year they also won the Supporters Shield in MLS league play.</p>



<p>The on-field success, and historic connection in their community, helped the Sounders set MLS attendance records in each of their first four seasons. Lumen Field, also home to the NFL’s Seahawks, opened in 2002, and was built with an MLS team in mind. </p>



<p>From their first MLS campaign in 2009 until 2022, Seattle made the playoffs every season, the longest such streak in league history. During that stretch, they’d go on to win MLS Cups in 2016 and 2019. And in 2022, they became the first American team in the modern format of the competition, and only the third ever, to win the CONCACAF Champions League. </p>
