<p>US private equity groups are allegedly considering acquiring the Women’s Super League in preparation for the league’s rebirth in season 2024-25.</p>



<p>The WSL is at a turning point just as interest in women’s soccer is at an all-time high. Once this season concludes, the Football Association (FA) said it will no longer oversee either of England’s top two competitions, the Championship or the Premier League.</p>



<p>Since the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-super-league-tv-schedule/">WSL</a> was established in the summer of 2011, the English women’s game is undergoing its most significant transformation in the next year. Thus, in order to accommodate more teams, the FA is planning to revive the Women’s Super League for the next season. To get this idea off the ground, however, they need $30 million.</p>



<h2>US investment group eyes 10-year stake in Women’s Super League</h2>



<p>The FA conducted a study to determine the best course of action for the development of women’s soccer. It suggests the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/watch-premier-league-on-us-tv-internet/">Premier League</a> seizes the reins. Only around half of the clubs are on board with this idea, and several of them have women’s teams that play in leagues much below the top division.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-12625155/AHEAD-GAME-American-investors-want-buy-Womens-Super-League-Premier-League-clubs-refusing-provide-25m-start-costs-seasons-planned-relaunch.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Daily Mail</a> reports American private equity groups have interest in purchasing a 10-year stake in the league. They identify enormous expansion potential for the league. Interest in women’s soccer has increased after England’s campaigns at the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/uefa-european-championship-tv-schedule/">European Championship</a> and the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-world-cup-tv-schedule/">World Cup</a>. England won Euro 2022 and reached the Final of the next summer’s Women’s World Cup.</p>



<p>The existing TV agreement for the WSL expires in the summer. Therefore, the FA has until December to obtain the financing. Now the FA is hunting for an agreement that pleases all involved parties.</p>



<h5>What is EPL’s and clubs’ stance?</h5>



<p>Premier League teams would become the WSL’s proprietors under the FA’s plan. The FA retains veto power over major decisions.</p>



<p>Clubs in the Premier League are divided about if and when a takeover should occur. They also debate who should pay and what any amount needs to be. There are half as many women’s Premier League teams as there are men’s. More teams play in the lower divisions. </p>

The FA is looking for ways to capitalize on the Women's Super League, and a US investment group may be there to bridge a gap.

<p>The head of the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-super-league-tv-schedule/">Women’s Super League</a> said she and other organizers of the English women’s top flight see record revenue in the future. The league wants to be the first women’s soccer league to break $1 billion in revenue. The WSL sets that target as a 10-year goal. </p>



<p>Dawn Airey, the chief executive of the Women’s Super League, outlined the disparity between men’s soccer and women’s soccer. Globally, women’s soccer generates $1 billion each year. By comparison, the men’s game surpasses $1 trillion each year. However, Airey and the Women’s Super League have a plan to build on the women’s game to rapidly grow its revenue.</p>



<p>“We look at the growth of attendances, we look at the growth of engagement and broadcast, we look at the increased interest in sponsorship and marketing opportunities, and then we start being more imaginative about what attending a women’s game means,” <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/sep/18/wsl-can-be-first-billion-pound-womens-football-league-in-the-world-says-it-chair" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Airey said</a>. “Not just watching the game, but everything that goes on around it, is there potential for clubs to think differently about their revenues?”</p>



<p>The Women’s Super League may be able to take inspiration from the Premier League, the most popular domestic league in the world. The Premier League is lining up to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/premier-league-to-run-womens-super-league-from-2024-20230915-WST-456346.html">take over the WSL’s organization</a>. That deal would not only inject cash into the WSL, but it would help set up a future TV rights deal. Unfortunately for the WSL, financial disagreements could put that takeover into question.</p>

<h2>Women’s Super League revenue poses threat to NWSL</h2>



<p>For American audiences, the WSL’s goal could put a strain on the growth of the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nwsl-tv-schedule-and-streaming-links/">National Women’s Soccer League</a>. As of now, the top flight of American women’s soccer is one of the top leagues in the world. For example, the NWSL of the United States regularly competes with the WSL of England for the top women’s domestic league. The English division’s ambition could propel it beyond the NWSL. </p>



<p>Airey said the league is making good progress in its early plans to boost revenue in the Women’s Super League. </p>



<p>“Have we got the right financing? Can we establish this independent body to run and manage the leagues that’s properly financed? We’re working on the finances, we’re working on governance. How are decisions made? That’s complicated,” Airey said. “We are making good progress.”</p>
