<p>Barcelona and Real Madrid have no shortage of historic matchups. That extends into the recent seasons. Barcelona and Real Madrid have won 17 of the last 19 LaLiga titles. In the last 10 Copa del Reys, either Barcelona or Real Madrid have won seven trophies. Then, in the Supercopa, these two clubs have won six of the last seven titles.  Last season, it was Barcelona to get the better of Real Madrid with a 3-1 win.</p>



<p>Even though Barcelona has the bragging rights from last season, it is Carlo Ancelotti’s side to enter the game on better form. Real Madrid has the lead in the LaLiga table. It is level on points with Girona after 19 games. When the two played previously in the league, Real Madrid overturned a deficit to defeat Barcelona in Catalonia. Jude Bellingham’s two goals in that game announced to the world that he is already one of the best midfielders in the world at the age of 20.</p>



<p>Both of the clubs have been battling rampant injuries. Real is without Eder Militao and Thibaut Courtois for the entire season. Likewise, Barcelona lost Gavi to a knee injury for the season earlier in the campaign while he was on duty with Spain. </p>



<p>This is a chance for Robert Lewandowski to get back to goal-scoring form. The Polish international scored his first goal from open play since October with his game-winning goal against Osasuna. Yet, to match what he was able to do last season, this game will be a major benchmark for his success in the remainder of this campaign. He has one goal in his games against Real Madrid since joining Barcelona. Interestingly, that came in the Supercopa final last season. It was the game-winning goal in that game.</p>

Barcelona vs Real Madrid: Supercopa Clasico TV details

Barcelona and Real Madrid will play for a trophy in the Supercopa de España in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday.

<p>Barcelona defeated Osasuna in the semifinal of the Supercopa de España to set up a <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/real-madrid-hits-atletico-for-five-in-supercopa-semifinals-20240110-WST-482628.html">clash with Real Madrid</a> in the Final. Robert Lewandowski finally found the back of the net for <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/barcelona-tv-schedule/">Barcelona</a> in the second half. Late in the game, 16-year-old Lamine Yamal iced the game. Last season’s Supercopa champions will have a chance to defend their title. It is a rematch of last season’s Supercopa final, which the Catalan club won, 3-0.</p>



<p>In the 2022/23 campaign, Barcelona used the Supercopa to turn around its fortunes. After last season’s mid-season tournament, Barcelona lost just once over its next 14 league games. It won 11 of those contests to rocket up the table. However, Barcelona’s performance on Thursday was not indicative of a team looking for an impetus for the season.</p>



<h2>Another poor start from Barcelona against Osasuna in Supercopa</h2>



<p>In classic Barcelona fashion, Barcelona looked dismal in the first 45 minutes. Granted, Barcelona did not concede in the first 45 minutes. Yet, Barcelona’s dominant possession did not lead to any goals of its own. Andreas Christensen forced a save out of Osasuna shot-stopper Sergio Herrera after a well-struck volley. Not long after, Ferran Torres pulled a shot narrowly wide after sloppy play at the back from Herrera. </p>



<p>With Barcelona holding the ball in the Osasuna half for much of the first period, last season’s Copa del Rey runner-up had a pair of decent chances. The first came within 10 minutes. A deflected shot changed direction. Iñaki Peña scrambled across the Barcelona net, but he was relieved to watch the ball roll wide. Then, after half an hour, one heavy touch from Robert Lewandowski sprung a quick Osasuna counterattack. Osasuna was too slow in the attack, though, and Peña smothered the chance.</p>

<p>Lewandowski missed the two best chances of the half for Barcelona. One of the attempts was on an uncontested header, but the Polish international knocked the ball wide of Herrera’s net. The better of the two chances came before then. Clever play from Sergi Roberto created a strong scoring chance for Lewandowski. His right-footed shot was too close to the Osasuna goalkeeper, who knocked the ball away.</p>



<h2>Lewandowski saves blemishes to set up Clasico in Supercopa</h2>



<p>Just before the hour mark, Robert Lewandowski finally put a chance away. Ilkay Gundogan was brilliant in the build-up play. One incisive pass from the German to Lewandowski opened him up on the right foot. While falling, Lewandowski slammed the ball into the back of the net to give Barcelona the lead.</p>



<p>Lewandowski’s relief was visible in the celebration. It was his first goal from open play in 60 days, when he scored a brace against Alaves. Also, it provided Barcelona a much-needed and much-deserved lead in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.</p>



<p>The game tapered out for much of the second half. With Barcelona still controlling possession of the ball, Osasuna’s chances were few and far between. Eventually, Lamine Yamal provided the insurance goal for Barcelona. Phenomenal skill from Joao Felix, which included a nutmeg on an Osasuna defender, set up Yamal. The 16-year-old beat one player before passing the ball into the back of the net.</p>



<p>Now, Xavi and Barcelona have a chance to win another Supercopa. They will face league-leading <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/real-madrid-tv-schedule/">Real Madrid</a> in a pivotal game for a trophy on Sunday.</p>

Barcelona defeated Osasuna in the semifinal of the Supercopa de España to set up a clash with Real Madrid in the Final.

<p>Real Madrid and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/atletico-madrid-tv-schedule/">Atletico Madrid</a> played out a dramatic semifinal in the Supercopa de España on Wednesday. The game required extra time after both clubs scored three goals in the 90 minutes. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/real-madrid-tv-schedule/">Real Madrid</a> scored both of the goals in the added period to advance to the Supercopa de España Final this weekend. Real Madrid will play the winner between <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/barcelona-tv-schedule/">Barcelona</a> and Osasuna, the runner-up of the 2022/23 Copa del Rey.</p>



<p>An eight-goal game goes heavily against the theme of the Madrid derby of recent seasons. The last time the two combined for more than four goals in a game was the 2018 UEFA Super Cup. In this game, the goals came frequently and early. That was an extension of when the two played in LaLiga earlier in the campaign.</p>



<h2>Four-goal first half in Saudi Arabia</h2>



<p>In their league meeting on matchday six, Atletico Madrid defeated Real, 3-1. That was <em>Los Blancos’</em> only loss in the season in all competitions. Atletico took the lead in that game after four minutes. In the Supercopa semifinal, Atletico scored early again. Just after six minutes, Mario Hermoso was the Atletico player waiting at the back post on a corner. He had an uncontested header that he put back across the face of the goal. Right in front of the Real Madrid supporters, Atletico had an early lead in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. </p>



<p>It only lasted 13 minutes, though. Real Madrid scored two goals in 10 minutes to take the lead. The first was from a Real Madrid corner. Luka Modric’s perfect cross to the penalty spot med the leaping head of Antonio Rüdiger. The German powered the ball into the net to equalize. Left-back Ferland Mendy gave Real Madrid the lead with just his fifth goal for Real Madrid. A clever touch with the outside of his left foot ensured the ball snuck past all the Atletico defenders and into the net of Jan Oblak.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://twitter.com/ESPNFC/status/1745169235100201198" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">best goal of the bunch</a> came with Atletico’s equalizer. Antoine Griezmann picked up the ball 30 yards from the goal. With four Real Madrid defenders converging on him, Griezmann brilliantly deked around each of them. That opened up space at the edge of the box for the Frenchman to take a right-footed shot. The ball dove into the bottom corner of the net to restore parity. The goal also made Griezmann the all-time leading scorer at Atletico Madrid.</p>



<h2>Real Madrid tops Atletico to advance in Supercopa</h2>



<p>The second half was not as frenetic as the first 45 minutes. However, a calamitous moment in the 78th minute restored Atletico’s lead. A <a href="https://twitter.com/ESPNFC/status/1745185096926364015" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dreadful moment from Kepa Arrizabalaga</a> led to a spill on an otherwise simple save. Kepa collided with Alvaro Morata. The ball dropped down and bonked off Rüdiger. The ball rolled in, and Atletico took the lead.</p>

<p>Real Madrid then urgently sought an equalizer. Heavy pressure from the defending Copa del Rey champions led to a flurry of attempts. Real Madrid had three shot attempts blocked by desperate Atletico defenders. Dani Carvajal came crashing in with an emphatic effort that got beyond two Atletico defenders on the goal line. The game was tied, and it would enter extra time.</p>



<p>Carlo Ancelotti’s side looked far more likely to score the game-winning goal in extra time. It would have to wait until the 116th minute for another bizarre goal. A cross into the Atletico area met the head of Joselu. The Spaniard could only <a href="https://twitter.com/ESPNFC/status/1745197707117949334" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deflect the ball on goal</a>, but that was more than enough. The header banked off an Atletico defender’s leg and looped into the top corner of the goal. Jan Oblak was helpless as he flailed for the ball. Real Madrid took a 4-3 lead that it would not relinquish.</p>



<p>With Atletico finally pressing forward in need of a goal, Diego Simeone sent Oblak into the attack. Real Madrid had the opportunity on the counterattack. Brahim Diaz outraced a retreating Oblak to a loose ball in the Atletico half, and the forward scored from 35 yards away to provide the last goal of the game.</p>



<p>Real Madrid will face either Barcelona or Osasuna in the Supercopa de España Final on Sunday.</p>

Real Madrid hits Atletico for five in Supercopa semifinals

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid played out a dramatic semifinal in the Supercopa de España on Wednesday in Riyadh.


<p>Sunday’s <em><a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/el-clasico-on-usa-tv-streaming-real-madrid-vs-barcelona/">El Clásico</a></em> in the Supercopa de España has an added significance. </p>



<p>Yes, it is still the biggest teams in Spain going head to head. Both are at the top of the <a href="https:\/\/www.laliga.com/en-GB/laliga-santander/standing" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LaLiga table</a>. Real Madrid cruised into the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/">Champions League</a> knockout stage, while Barcelona slumped into the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/europa-league-tv-schedule/">Europa League</a>, a competition it can, and should, win. Finally, both are in the running for the Copa del Rey. Yet, both Barcelona and Real struggled in their round of 32 games against lower league opposition.</p>



<p>So, if both clubs are still alive for domestic and European trophies, the Spanish Supercup, perhaps the smallest trophy available, would bear little significance.</p>



<p>That is not the case for this game. Only one can win <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/la-liga-tv-schedule/">LaLiga</a>. One can win the Copa del Rey. Both could come away victorious in Europe, but that is a stretch. At least, that is the case for Barcelona. Real Madrid always seems to play its best in the Champions League.</p>



<p>Still, the Supercopa de España is a chance to set the tone for the rest of the season. Neither side looks like a true dominant force in Spain or in Europe, despite the gap at the top of the LaLiga table. Winning a trophy early on can speak volumes for intentions in the remainder of the season. </p>

<h2>Importance of the Clásico for the Supercopa</h2>



<h5>Barcelona</h5>



<p>The Catalan club has one trophy over the last three seasons, including the current one. That was a Copa del Rey victory in 2021/22, which required some serious dramatics just to get to the final. This gap in trophies is a lifetime for the club.</p>



<p>You must go back to 2007/08 to find the time Barcelona did not lift a trophy in a season prior to 2019/20. Only one of those seasons from 2007/08 to 2019/20 had less than two trophies. Therefore, success is baked into the core of Barcelona. Fans expect greatness in every competition, regardless of its size. </p>



<p>This season, Barcelona had all the expectation in the world. It closed out last season on a good note in the league to finish second. That is the only reason Barcelona is even competing in the 2023 Supercopa de España. This would be Xavi’s first trophy after he missed out on the Europa League and LaLiga last season. That would bit immeasurable confidence in the young manager, who already has Barcelona fans peering down on him.</p>



<h5>Real Madrid</h5>



<p>Real Madrid, perhaps the most decorated and successful club in the history of soccer, has not won a treble. That does not come into play in the Clásico in the Supercopa. Spain’s treble-winning awards are traditionally LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.</p>



<p>That being said, Real Madrid is <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/villarreal-upset-real-madrid-with-2-1-win-20230107-WST-414693.html">in the running</a> for those three. Carlo Ancelotti has had no shortage of success in cup competitions with Real Madrid. Last season, Los Blancos won the Champions League and LaLiga after lifting the Supercopa around this time in 2022, defeating Barcelona on the way. Real Madrid can take the momentum from defeating a rival and apply it to the remainder of the season.</p>

<p>In league play, Barcelona would be without Robert Lewandowski. His three-game suspension is ongoing, as he missed the Atletico Madrid clash. However, this is a different competition. As a result, he is back, and <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/barcelona-survives-betis-to-set-up-clasico-in-supercopa-20230112-WST-415377.html">he scored against Real Betis</a> on Thursday. Moreover, Barcelona brings its full complement of talent. Pedri and Gavi run the midfield, and both had exceptional games against Betis. Even more impressive was that of Marc-André ter Stegen. The German made two stops in the penalty shootout against Betis to carry his LaLiga form into Saudi Arabia for this miniature tournament.</p>



<p>Real Madrid is also pulling no stops for this game. Karim Benzema, back from injury after missing the World Cup, converted a penalty in the regular 90 and the shootout. Alongside him, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric continue to rack up awards in what could be their last season together in Real Madrid’s midfield. It is virtually the same Real Madrid team that won last season’s Champions League and LaLiga. Plus, it is similar to the team that defeated Barcelona in this very competition, minus the departure of Casemiro replaced by a resurgent Fede Valverde.</p>



<p>That game last year in the Supercopa was a gem that went to extra time. This one on Sunday could shape up to be the same.</p>

On Sunday, Barcelona and Real Madrid face off in the latest El Clásico in this year's Supercopa de España, a crucial chance for a trophy.

El Clásico preview: Supercopa may be must-win for both sides


<p>Barcelona and Real Betis played out a thriller in their Supercopa de España semifinal tie. Sensational goals, a red card, VAR decisions and penalties provided all the drama a cup tie should have. </p>



<p>In the end, Barcelona narrowly escaped Real Betis in a penalty shootout. The 2-2 scoreline after 120 minutes led to Barcelona winning the spot kicks, 4-2</p>



<p>Now, Barcelona takes on Real Madrid in the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/el-clasico-on-usa-tv-streaming-real-madrid-vs-barcelona/">first Clásico of the season</a>. That game is Jan. 15 from King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.</p>



<p>Despite Barcelona’s talent, Betis forced a back-and-forth game. For the beginning portion of the game, Barcelona dominated possession, as it often does. The reward for holding the ball was putting it in the net. Pedri plucked the ball into the net past former Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. However, upon video review, Raphinha had, literally speaking, a toe offside in the buildup to the play. As a result, the game remained scoreless. </p>



<p>However, Ousmane Dembele did well to set up Robert Lewandowski before the break. The striker, who is currently suspended from LaLiga play, got his own rebound to break the deadlock.</p>



<p>Then, in the second half, Real Betis came out the far better of the two sides. Manuel Pellegrini’s side found an equalizer in the 77th minute. Luiz Henrique passed on to a waiting Nabil Fekir, who slotted home past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.</p>

<p>Both sides scored sumptuous goals in the second half. Ansu Fati scored a volley from 16 yards out to the far post to give Barcelona the edge again.</p>

<p>Then, just after the century mark, Loren Moron scored a backheel goal to pull Betis level again. Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who played a hero role for much of the game, was dumbfounded by Loren’s attempt.</p>

<p>If one goal made ter Stegen look silly in the 120 minutes, the German goalkeeper recaptured the headlines in the spot kicks. Barcelona’s shot-stopped made two saves on Betis’s third and fourth kicks. For Barcelona, conversions from Lewandowski, Franck Kessié, Ansu Fati and Pedri were enough as Barcelona won the penalty shootout, 4-2.</p>



<p>Barcelona’s reward is a game against its most bitter rivals. Real Madrid, like Barcelona only escaped with a win on penalties against Valencia in its semifinal fixture. The two are the <a href="https:\/\/www.laliga.com/en-GB/laliga-santander/standing" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">top of the table</a> in Spain, even if this has no implication for that competition.</p>
