<p>Lionel Messi is going to be the star of a commercial during Super Bowl LVIII. Partnering with Michelob Ultra, Messi will make his first appearance in a commercial for American football in February. Additionally, the news of Messi’s involvement follows the reveal of Anheuser-Busch being the global beer sponsor for the 2024 Copa America. Messi is going to feature in that tournament as he looks to defend the title with Argentina.</p>



<p>The World Cup winner has an immense presence regardless of the sport. Not only has Inter Miami’s popularity skyrocketed with Messi in the fold. Major League Soccer has benefitted greatly from having the star. Now, American Football fans will get the chance to see Messi in the biggest sporting event for audiences in the United States. </p>



<p>Michelob Ultra provided audiences with a first glimpse of the ad on Thursday. In the 15-second snippet, Messi goes to grab a beer, but the tap comes up empty. The tagline in the description of the advertisement reads, “This Super Bowl, Messi proves that a Superior Light Beer is worth the wait.”</p>

<p>Messi is no stranger to featuring in commercials, but this is his first for commercials during American football coverage. Previously, he was one of the headline names in UEFA Champions League commercials for Lays and Pepsi. His work with Anheuser-Busch previously included <a href="https://onefootball.com/en/news/the-160-goalkeepers-given-644-bottles-of-budweiser-beer-from-lionel-messi-38749410" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sending beers to each of the goalkeepers</a> he scored on when he broke the record for most goals scored with one club.</p>

<h2>Messi Super Bowl commercial adds to work on American TV</h2>



<p>More recently, Messi contributed to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/lionel-messi-promotes-womens-world-cup-in-new-beer-ad-20230710-WST-442080.html">advertisements during the Women’s World Cup in 2023</a>. Budweiser titled its campaign ‘<em>The World is Hers to Take’</em> in reference to the tournament of that summer. That was fresh off Messi’s time winning the men’s World Cup with Argentina, so few could talk about being a champion like him. That advertisement had Messi talking in Spanish with English-language subtitles for the majority of audiences in the United States. Also, that was a global advertisement, not just one for Americans.</p>



<p>The Super Bowl is dominated by American viewers. Generally, Super Bowl commercials are lighthearted and noteworthy for discussion the next day. Anheuser-Busch will be hoping Messi’s appearance can start a dialogue among viewers. The preview for the full commercial may show Messi needing to do some acting in the advertisement.</p>



<h2>The Super Bowl is on Feb. 11</h2>



<p>The announcement of Messi’s appearance in the Super Boal comes just over two weeks before the game itself. Currently, the National Football League playoffs are in the conference championships. This weekend, the Baltimore Ravens play the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs. Then, later on Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers take on the Detroit Lions. </p>



<p>For the Super Bowl on Feb. 11, coverage is available on CBS. There is no telling when the Michelob Ultra advertisement will air. Messi is among several major companies when it comes to a Super Bowl commercial. Regardless, soccer fans will look forward to seeing one of the biggest stars in the sport appear during the biggest game in American sports.</p>

Lionel Messi is going to be the star of a commercial during Super Bowl LVIII when he features with Michelob Ultra on Feb. 11.

<p style="text-align: left">The Super Bowl, that vainglorious championship game of American football, is less than a week away, and with this game will come grand estimates of just how many people around the world will be watching. American expatriates, European fans of the gridiron game and various curiosity seekers will tune in this Sunday to see the big quarterback duel between Peyton Manning and Drew Brees.</p>
<p style="text-align: left">Despite what the NFL would like you to believe, however, the Super Bowl will <em>not</em> be the most-watched club football event of the year. That honor now belongs to the UEFA Champions League Final.</p>
<p style="text-align: left">According to a study by Initiative Futures Sports and Entertainment in London, <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100131/tv_nm/us_soccer_nfl_television">the Champions League Final was the most watched annual sporting event of 2009</a>, bringing in an average worldwide audience of 109 million viewers, compared to 106 million for Super Bowl XLIII. The “total audience” numbers, which represent the number of people who watched at least part of the event, were skewed even more in favor of the Champions League. 206 million watched at least part of Barcelona’s win over Manchester United, while only 162 million saw part of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ victory over the Arizona Cardinals.</p>
<p style="text-align: left">So what has made the Champions League Final bigger than “The Big Game(tm)”? One word: Asia.</p>
<p style="text-align: left">The study showed that the NFL has a huge domestic audience and has made a few inroads into European television markets, thanks in part to its annual game in Wembley Stadium, but UEFA and its member clubs are well ahead of the NFL in terms of marketing their brands to Asian nations. No doubt, this was helped by the presence of Manchester United, a club that has marketed itself heavily in Asia, in the last two Champions League Finals. Barcelona is also a well-known brand throughout the world, as are many of the clubs participating in the knockout stage this year.</p>
<p style="text-align: left">Last year’s Champions League Final also featured Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, arguably the two best footballers on the planet. They probably had a bit more pull with international sports fans than Ben Roethlisberger and Kurt Warner.</p>
<p style="text-align: left">What’s more, the Super Bowl lacks <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yj1wKcNiKiQ">a really catchy theme song</a>. That never hurts.</p>
<p style="text-align: left">Of course, since this is a World Cup year, neither of these games will be the most-watched football event of 2010. Still, the study suggests that both events are growing in stature worldwide, so it will be interesting to see how their audiences will compare as this decade progresses. It will also be interesting to see how well UEFA boss Michel Platini and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell handle their games’ respective financial issues. Goodell has contentious collective bargaining negotiations ahead of him, and they threaten to wipe out the 2011 NFL season. Meanwhile, Platini has to figure out how to deal with the issue of clubs carrying massive debts without undermining the popularity of UEFA’s prize club competition. As huge as these two games have become, neither is too big to fail.</p>
