
<p>If the Great Britain women’s soccer team makes it to the Paris 2024 Olympics, Sarina Wiegman will lead the squad. Wiegman is the head coach of the England Women’s National Team. She is among the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/england-to-reject-uswnt-approach-for-highly-rated-coach-20230817-WST-450705.html">most-wanted coaches</a> in the world. For example, the Netherlands men’s squad included her in its <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/netherlands-mens-team-eyes-england-womens-boss-wiegman-20230821-WST-451392.html">list of potential coaches</a>.</p>



<p>Wiegman won the award for the UEFA Women’s Coach of the Year. That came on the back of guiding England to the 2023 Women’s World Cup Final. Additionally, she led England to victory at the European Championships last year.</p>



<p>Now, she will coach Great Britain at the 2024 Olympics if its women’s soccer team qualifies, says the <a href="https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/wiegman-team-gb-2024-olympics-paris-b1108392.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Evening Standard</em></a>.</p>



<h5>Sarina Wiegman takes on Olympic job</h5>



<p>“The Olympics Games is such a special sporting event and, for women’s football, one of the biggest stages to play. That is the goal, but we know it cannot happen if we don’t do our job in the Nations League.</p>



<p>“Until that is complete, it would not be right to talk any more about Team GB including speculation about players and any early preparations,” <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/netherlands-mens-team-eyes-england-womens-boss-wiegman-20230821-WST-451392.html">Sarina Wiegman</a> said earlier, via <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/66871699" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BBC</a>.</p>

<h2>Great Britain must still qualify for soccer in Olympics</h2>



<p>The Nations League bracket has placed England in a group containing the Netherlands, Belgium, and Scotland. The group winners then play in the four-team Nations League Finals. The two finalists would represent Europe at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. However, if France wins, the third-place team will also advance to the Olympics. France already has a spot in the competition because it is the host.</p>



<p>By extension, Great Britain would qualify for the Olympics with England’s success. If Great Britain qualifies, any player from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can play.</p>



<p>The first-ever UEFA Women’s Nations League starts Sep. 22, 2023. The competition runs from September through February. Therefore, it finishes before the 2024 Olympics in Paris.</p>



<p>Many of the teams competing in this first tournament will be watched closely after their excellent performances at the Women’s World Cup 2023. This includes the eventual champions Spain, the runners-up England, and the shockingly eliminated Germans.</p>



<p>Two spots in the next Paris 2024 Olympics will be decided through this competition.</p>

Familiar face to coach Team GB at possible 2024 Olympics

If Team Great Britain qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, a well-known figure will serve as team manager.


<p>England women’s national team head coach Sarina Wiegman could be returning to the Netherlands in a historic way. The former Netherlands women’s head coach has had success at each of her career coaching stops. Prior to joining England, Wiegman led the Netherlands women’s team to the 2019 World Cup Final. There, only the USWNT could slow down the Dutch.</p>



<p>After leading England to the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/07/30/englands-summer-of-love-for-the-lionesses-reaches-euro-2022-finale/">UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 title</a> and the 2023 Women’s World Cup Final, other teams came calling. However, <em><a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2023/08/21/sarina-wiegman-netherlands-mens-team-lionesses-world-cup/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Telegraph</a></em> reports Wiegman would be on the shortlist of names to take over the Netherlands men’s team. Currently, Ronald Koeman is under pressure to pull results. Koeman has lost three of the competitive games he has managed. That includes a 4-0 loss to France in Euro 2024 qualifying and a pair of losses to Croatia and Italy in the Nations League Finals. </p>



<p>Therefore, Wiegman could be a change of pace as the Netherlands looks to reassert itself on a global stage. Wiegman is under contract with England through the 2025 Women’s Euro. In each of the four tournaments she has coached in, her national team reached the final. She has been the manager to win each of the last two Women’s European Championships. The last time the Dutch men’s team reached a final was the 2010 World Cup, where it lost to Spain.</p>

<p>The Netherlands is not alone in this interest. <em>The Telegraph </em>added England FA chief executive Mark Bullingham added Gareth Southgate’s successor in the men’s team may be a woman. Wiegman understands the English national team culture to make it a seamless transition.</p>



<h2>USWNT may fight Netherlands men’s team for Sarina Wiegman</h2>



<p>However, if Wiegman is to remain in the women’s game, the USWNT is trying to lure her in to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/uswnt-boss-vlatko-andonovski-steps-down-after-world-cup-20230817-WST-450583.html">replace Vlatko Andonovski</a>. However, England was confident in its ability to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/england-to-reject-uswnt-approach-for-highly-rated-coach-20230817-WST-450705.html">turn down the USWNT</a> so Wiegman would stay with the Lionesses. Of course, Wiegman’s home country providing the chance to manage the men’s team would be historic. It would be harder for Wiegman to turn down an opportunity with that much draw.</p>



<p>Wiegman said she has no desire to leave the Lionesses after <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/spain-a-class-above-wins-first-womens-world-cup-final-20230820-WST-451135.html">losing in the World Cup Final</a>. However, her potential to manage the Dutch national team is stronger than ever following such success.</p>

Netherlands men's team eyes England Women's boss Wiegman

England women's national team head coach Sarina Wiegman could be returning to the Netherlands in a historic way.


<p>The English Football Association (FA) is prepared to hold on to England women’s national team head coach Sarina Wiegman at all costs despite the new vacancy with the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/uswnt-tv-schedule/">USWNT</a>. The Dutch coach is a top contender to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/uswnt-boss-vlatko-andonovski-steps-down-after-world-cup-20230817-WST-450583.html">replace Vlatko Andonovski</a>, who resigned from the United States on Thursday. The coach’s decision comes less than two weeks after <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/usa-lose-by-a-millimeter-earliest-tournament-exit-ever-for-team-20230806-WST-448266.html">Sweden bounced the USWNT</a> from the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/womens-world-cup-tv-schedule/">2023 Women’s World Cup</a>.</p>



<p>Andonovski’s resignation leaves a major hole to fill for U.S. Soccer. The USWNT head coaching job is also arguably the top position in women’s soccer. After all, the Americans have won a record four Women’s World Cup titles and are currently the top-ranked team in the world by FIFA.</p>



<h2>FA exec wants Wiegman to stay with England, not join USWNT</h2>



<p>Nevertheless, FA chief Mark Bullingham will do everything he can to retain Wiegman. The exec spoke on Thursday about the coach potentially being linked with the USWNT job. “From our side, she’s someone we’d like to have with us for a very long time,” <a href="https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/sarina-wiegman-usa-england-world-cup-final-b1101333.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> Bullingham. “We have always said that we’d get to it after a tournament.”</p>



<p>“We’ve got a bit of time, because obviously she’s contracted to 2025, and she’ll obviously want to have a decent holiday after this. But all I’ll say is we’re massive fans of her. We believe she’s happy and we’d love to continue working with her for a long time.”</p>

<h5>Dutch coach has propelled England to a premier team</h5>



<p>Wiegman has worked wonders with England since being introduced in 2021. The Dutch coach guided the Lionesses to their first-ever major trophy by winning the 2022 Women’s Euros. Not to be outdone, Wiegman now has her team in the Women’s World Cup final as well. England is set to face Spain for the title on Sunday, August 20th.</p>



<p>Bullingham was also asked directly in his interview if the FA would reject any approach for their coach. “Yes, 100 percent,” proclaimed the exec. “It is not about money. We are very, very happy with her and we feel she is happy. I think that is the answer.”</p>



<p>Wiegman does, however, have experience here in the States. The coach previously played alongside Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The talented team went on to win the 1989 National Championship. Nevertheless, England is currently one of the top teams in women’s soccer and it remains to be seen if Wiegman would jump ship before her contract expires in 2025.</p>
