Real Madrid legend Pepe has made headlines this summer by rejecting an offer to return to Brazil with Serie A side, Vasco da Gama. 



The 41-year-old former <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/real-madrid-tv-schedule/">Real Madrid</a> star, who recently concluded a successful five-year stint with Porto, is currently a free agent. 



As he weighs his options for the next chapter of his career, his decision to turn down a move to Brazil has sparked considerable interest and speculation.



Pepe, known for his robust defending and leadership on the field, has enjoyed an illustrious career spanning nearly two decades. 



He made a name for himself at Real Madrid, winning numerous titles; including three <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/where-to-watch-uefa-champions-league-and-europa-league-on-us-tv-and-internet/">UEFA Champions League</a> trophies and three La Liga titles. After leaving Madrid, he returned to Porto, where he continued to showcase his defensive prowess and added to his extensive trophy cabinet.



Vasco da Gama, a historic club in Brazil, expressed interest in signing the 41-year-old veteran this summer. 



According to <a href="https://www.ojogo.pt/5048127614/pepe-tera-recusado-proposta-do-vasco-devido-a-violencia-no-futebol-brasileiro/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OJogo</a>, the&nbsp;Brasileirão giants made a formal offer to the Portugal international. 



This move came as part of their broader strategy to strengthen the squad. One prominent example is their season-long <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/coutinhos-villa-exit-looms-as-heartwarming-move-advances/">loan deal with Philippe Coutinho</a>, a former Brazil international and standout player for Liverpool.



<h2>Reasons for decision</h2>



Despite the opportunity to join the Black Shirts and return to his birth country, Pepe declined the offer. 



The report cited the primary reason for his decision as his concern about the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/facial-recognition-software-captures-brazil-crime-boss-at-game/">violence in Brazilian soccer</a>. 



This issue has been a longstanding problem in South America; with numerous incidents of fan violence, security concerns, and general instability within the sport. 



Pepe, known for his professionalism and high standards, likely considered these factors detrimental to his playing conditions and overall well-being.

Additionally, personal and family reasons played a significant role in his decision. He spent the majority of his career in Europe, where he has built a stable life and professional reputation. 



Thus, a move to Brazil at this stage might have posed unnecessary disruptions for him and his family.



<h2>What now for Pepe?</h2>



Pepe’s future remains uncertain, but he is not short of options. Reports from <a href="https://www.superdeporte.es/fichajes/2024/07/11/equipo-traer-pepe-vuelta-laliga-105522315.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Superdeporte</a> suggest that <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/where-to-watch-la-liga-on-us-tv-and-internet/">La Liga</a> side Celta Vigo is considering offering him a route back into La Liga. 



Celta’s manager, Claudio Giraldez, is reportedly not entirely satisfied with his current defensive options; so he views Pepe as a potential solution. 



Given the player’s vast experience and proven track record, he could be a valuable addition to Celta Vigo’s squad.



A move to Celta Vigo would also be logistically convenient for the defender, as it would only require him to relocate a few hours north along the Iberian Peninsula.



 This proximity might make the transition smoother for him and his family, compared to a more drastic move to another continent.



Meanwhile, Vasco da Gama’s successful signing of Philippe Coutinho highlights their ambition to strengthen their squad with experienced and high-profile players. 



Coutinho, who had fallen out of favor at Aston Villa, secured a move back to Brazil where he aims to rejuvenate his career. 



His transition underscores the trend of European-based Brazilian stars returning to their homeland, albeit under more favorable personal and professional circumstances than Pepe’s potential move.

Arsenal announced on Saturday that they have released striker Nicolas Pepe of Ivory Coast to sign with Trabzonspor of Turkey’s Super Lig.



With a then-record transfer price of about $90 million, the Gunners acquired the 28-year-old in 2019 from Ligue 1 club Lille. With this summer’s $130 million pound transfer of England midfielder <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/lampard-confesses-chelseas-prime-target-set-to-join-arsenal-20230713-WST-442925.html">Declan Rice</a> from West Ham, they set a new record transfer fee.



<a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/arsenals-pepe-linked-with-transfer-away-from-emirates-20230907-WST-454590.html">Pepe</a> was never able to establish himself with the Gunners, moving to a supporting role until he finally started his last <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> game for the club in October 2021. He was on loan at French club Nice last year and scored eight goals in 28 games.



<h5>Pepe latest player to see contract torn up under Arteta</h5>



Although Pepe rejoined <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a> this summer, he did not take part in the team’s preseason. The team has given him permission to seek a new team for quite some time.



Mesut Ozil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Shkodran Mustafi, Sead Kolasinac, Willian, and Hector Bellerin all left the club during Mikel Arteta’s tenure as manager. 



Now, the Ivorian winger is the latest player to have his contract canceled.

In a <a href="https://www.arsenal.com/news/nicolas-pepe-leaves-club" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">press release</a>, the English side said: “We can confirm that Nicolas Pepe is leaving the club. We have agreed with Nicolas to terminate his contract with immediate effect. Everyone at Arsenal thanks Nicolas for his contribution during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”



<h5>Arsenal still owe $12m to Lille</h5>



Pepe was one of the highest-paid players for Arsenal, but he was already prepared to accept a wage reduction in order to finally escape north London.



By getting rid of the winger, the Gunners will save between $8.7 million and $11.2 million every year.



The only problem is that the Gunners made a big deal about signing the player from Lille in 2019, promising to pay the total sum in installments. The <a href="https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/nicolas-pepe-arsenal-fc-contract-termination-b1105993.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Evening Standard</a> reports that they have yet to pay another installment worth almost $12.4 million.
