
<p>Manchester City beat <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a> at home on Friday to advance in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/fa-cup-tv-schedule/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FA Cup</a>. A lone goal by Nathan Ake gave the edge to the hosts on the night. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">City</a> will now play in the round of 16 of the competition and try to win their first FA Cup since 2019.</p>



<p>Despite being a fourth round cup game, Friday’s fixture was one of the more anticipated matchups of this season. Arsenal and City have undoubtedly been the top two teams in England during the current campaign. Entering the game, they have combined to lose just seven of their 57 games in all competitions. </p>



<h5>Even start to the match</h5>



<p>As expected, the game started evenly. The hosts had more of possession inside the opening 30 minutes, as one would expect with Manchester City. Still, Arsenal had the two best scoring chances. Takehiro Tomiyasu and Leandro Trossard both had quality shots saved by City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega in the opening stages of the game.</p>



<p>Perhaps the most noteworthy part of a goalless first half was an injury. Center back John Stones was forced off after seemingly pulling his hamstring very late in the period. Aymeric Laporte was introduced to the match only moments before the halftime break.</p>



<h2>City finds a way against Arsenal in second half of FA Cup tie</h2>



<p>Much like City’s recent game with Tottenham Hotspur, the reigning <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> champions upped their intensity in the second half. The breakthrough came in the 64th minute of the match. Julian Alvarez hit the base of the post from long range. The ball then fell to Jack Grealish inside the box. Grealish found Nathan Ake who neatly passed the ball into the bottom corner.</p>

<p>The goal appeared to wake Arsenal back up though. Eddie Nketiah nearly leveled the scoreline just a few minutes later. The striker had a fantastic chance to score just a yard or two away from goal, but he couldn’t get good contact on the ball.</p>



<p>Nevertheless, the league leaders could not break down a stingy City defense. Arsenal’s only two shots on target came in the opening period. The Gunners will next face Everton in league play, while City are set to face Spurs yet again.</p>

<p>Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has stated that Mikel Arteta would be the ‘best option’ to replace him at the helm. Formerly an assistant at <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">City</a>, Arteta is now oversees league leaders <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a>. The two friends face off against each other in an <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/fa-cup-tv-schedule/">FA Cup</a> game on Friday. </p>



<p>Guardiola made the comment during his pre-match press conference on Thursday. “I’m pretty sure if I left and he would be here, he’d be the best option,” <a href="https:\/\/www.bbc.com/sport/live/football/64409654" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Guardiola. But I extended my contract, I’m sorry. It couldn’t happen.”</p>



<p>The City manager signed a contract extension to remain at the club back in November. However, the deal only added two years to the Spaniard’s stay in Manchester. The contract expires following the 2024/25 campaign.</p>



<h2>Guardiola heaps praises on former City assistant Arteta</h2>



<p>Guardiola was also full of praise for Arteta and Arsenal ahead of their matchup. “Arsenal is one of the most important clubs in England. I said many times we knew it, when he was here. His ability and capacity; [their success] is the biggest compliment to Arsenal as well.” </p>



<p>“The hierarchy, they trusted him in their bad moments. I guess it wouldn’t have been easy. At the end you need time and investment, but the results are there. It is a challenge for us to challenge them.”</p>

<p>Arsenal are currently five points ahead of the reigning champions City in the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> table. The Gunners have only lost one top flight match during the season, but still have to play Guardiola’s men twice in league play.</p>



<h5>Arsenal boss admits ‘strange feeling’ to face Pep</h5>



<p>Arteta also acknowledged the awkwardness of the two friends going head to head for the title. “It’s a strange feeling,” Arteta <a href="https:\/\/www.bbc.com/sport/football/64405356" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> in his press conference on Wednesday. “I always hoped that was going to be the case one day and it’s happening this season.”</p>



<p>“That’s not going to change any friendship, the moments that we have, how important he is in my life, how important he is in my profession. We’re both willing to win and defend our clubs in any way and that’s always been the case since day one.”</p>



<p>However, Arteta did also claim that he would rather be fighting for the title with another manager. “I would prefer to do it with someone else to be fair.”</p>

<p><a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">The Gunners</a> went ahead in the 14<sup>th</sup> minute when Bukayo Saka’s right footed cross was fumbled into his own net by Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.</p>



<h5>Horrific error by Lloris</h5>



<p> It was a catastrophic error from the Spurs captain, who given by his standards should have held on despite the ball being deflected from team Ryan Sessegnon.</p>



<p>Four minutes later Arsenal shot stopper Aaraon Ramsdale came up with a huge save from Hueng min Son to preserve his side’s lead. </p>



<p>The home side hardly got a foot into the game after that passage of play as Arsenal looked by far the better of the two sides dominating every blade of grass on the pitch. Thomas Partey almost made it 2-0 in the 24<sup>th</sup> minute but his spectacular volley from the edge of the boxcrashed off the post.</p>



<p>Arsenal however doubled their lead in the 36<sup>th</sup> minute as captain Martin Odegaard’s 25 yard scorcher beat Lloris once again at the far post.</p>

<h5>Conte’s Spurs Outclassed</h5>



<p>It was men against boys at that point as Antonio Conte’s men were outplayed and outclassed tactically. Aaron Ramsdale preserved the two-goal cushion going into half time as produced a fine save to deny Harry Kane’s swinging header.</p>



<p>Tottenham however came out with their guns blazing but it was Ramsdale yet again who made two brilliant saves in the space of two minutes, first parrying away Kane’s right footed effort on goal and then miraculously stretching his left leg to deny Sessegnon when the Tottenham winger was destined to score.</p>



<p>Eddia Nketiah should have it made it three for Arsenal in the 70<sup>th</sup> minute following a fine ball from Granit Xhaka but the forward’s poor first touch ensured Lloris could make himself big to keep it at 2-0. Spurs did threaten in the closing minutes but were unable to beat Ramsdale as Conte cut a sorry figure on the sidelines.</p>



<p>The result means that Arteta’s men seized the advantage in the title race after reigning Champions Manchester City lost in their locally derby on Saturday. It was also Arsenal’s first league double over their cross-city rivals for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign. Spurs meanwhile are fifth with 33 points, 5 points adrift of Manchester United for a place in the top four having played an extra game.</p>

<p>Arsenal and Newcastle played out a top-three clash to a draw on Tuesday. The league leaders certainly looked the more likely to score for much of the game. However, Nick Pope made a number of saves and Newcastle was defensively sound, keeping the game scoreless.</p>



<p>The scoreless draw is Newcastle’s seventh clean sheet in its last nine Premier League games. Overall, Newcastle has 10 clean sheets, with <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/2022/06/23/newcastle-sign-england-keeper-pope-from-burnley/">Nick Pope</a> in goal for all of them. </p>



<p>This game had fireworks, and was far from the stereotypical 0-0 draw. At the conclusion of the game, the referee distributed nine yellow cards, including one to a substitute on the bench. Despite Arsenal attempting 17 shots, neither side found the back of the net. </p>



<p>As stated, Nick Pope was the hero on the day on a number of occasions. The English international notably made a save on Eddie Nketiah towards the end of the match to preserve the goalless game. </p>



<h2>Penalty decision preserves scoreless draw between Arsenal and Newcastle</h2>



<p>Even then, Arsenal thought it had a chance to win with a penalty. Granit Xhaka drove down the inside of the box to cross a ball in. He crossed it into the middle, but a sliding Jacob Murphy deflected the attempt. Upon review, the ball seems to have hit Murphy’s arm.</p>

<p>As co-commentator Jim Beglin noted, the issue for Arsenal was proximity. Murphy was practically on top of Xhaka as the Gunner played the ball in. There was simply nowhere else for Murphy to go.</p>



<h5>No change in the table after Tuesday</h5>



<p>Arsenal remains <a href="https:\/\/www.premierleague.com/tables" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">top of the table</a>. The cushion over Manchester City is now eight points. However, Mikel Arteta will rue the opportunity to open a double-digit gap over the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/why-newcastle-could-contend-for-the-premier-league-20221229-WST-413496.html">most likely title challenger</a>. Regardless, the draw is just the third time Arsenal dropped points on the current season. The other draw was against Southampton, and Arsenal’s lone loss was at Old Trafford. Therefore, this was the first time Arsenal dropped points at the Emirates.</p>



<p>For Newcastle, the Magpies remain in third place. Manchester United’s win over Bournemouth today means that the Red Devils are level on points with Newcastle. However, Eddie Howe’s side has a vast a advantage in the goal differential department. Newcastle is at a goal differential of +21, while Manchester United, which won 3-0 on Tuesday, is only at +7.</p>



<p>Arsenal now prepares for a trip to League One side Oxford United in the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/fa-cup-tv-schedule/">FA Cup</a> on Monday, Jan. 9. The Gunners return to Premier League play on Sunday, Jan. 15, with the North London Derby.</p>



<p>Newcastle is also making a trip to a third-tier side in the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/fa-cup-tv-schedule/">FA Cup third round</a>, traveling to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. On Tuesday, Jan. 10, Newcastle plays in the Carabao Cup semifinals against Leicester City at St. James’ Park.</p>

<p>Reporters also asked Guardiola if Arsenal could remain at the <a href="https:\/\/www.premierleague.com/tables" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">top of the table</a> and challenge for the title. “Compared to previous seasons, that’s for sure. They will not be the only ones. Last season they were not a contender to win the Premier League, this season they will be,” proclaimed Guardiola.</p>

<p>The City boss also spoke about Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta being his previous understudy in Manchester. “Mikel, we worked together three years but he was taught since he was born and has experiences in England. Maybe I learned more off him when we worked together,” claimed the coach.</p>



<p>“Arsenal has the work ethic, the talent, the support. Mikel had the bad moment in the beginning, but people see how he works every day, the commitment. He’s patient, all the managers want time to build something. Arsenal have given it to him, the rest is the position they have.”</p>

<h5>Patience the key for Arsenal</h5>



<p>While many Premier League clubs have their coaches on short leashes, Arsenal have given Arteta time to adapt and grow. The Gunners finished eighth in Arteta’s first full season in charge at the club. They then only missed out on a top four place by two points during the 2021/22 campaign. Now, Arsenal’s officials are being rewarded with their patience.</p>



<p>Despite Arsenal’s current place in the standings, Arteta has remained solely focused on the match in front of the team. “I’m not here to give opinions on that,” <a href="https:\/\/www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12744604/pep-guardiola-arsenal-are-title-contenders-theyve-been-better-than-man-city" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> Arteta on his team’s title chances. “What I want to do is finish as high as possible and play as well as possible.”</p>

<p>Earlier in the week, City manager Pep Guardiola suggested that the game versus Arsenal would not take place. “After the international break, we’ll have one month and a half with a lot of games,” Guardiola <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/manchester-city-engman_city/story/4745190/man-city-arsenal-could-be-axed-due-to-fixture-pile-up-guardiola" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in Tuesday’s press conference. “We have seven Premier League games, five games at home, it depends if the Arsenal game will be postponed or not. Then the World Cup.”</p>
<p>The domino effect to reschedule the two games adds to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/09/09/arsenals-three-gabriels-left-off-brazil-squad-ahead-of-friendlies/">Arsenal’s scheduling headache</a>. As <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/category/world-cup-2022/">the World Cup</a> is taking place midseason this year, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/09/04/top-european-clubs-face-challenge-of-depth-in-condensed-season/">fixture lists for European clubs were already tight</a>. The Gunners will now play nine matches in the month of October. They also have three more fixtures scheduled for early November before the start of the World Cup.</p>
<p>Arsenal’s next game away to Brentford on Sunday is apparently set to go ahead as planned. The Premier League has already postponed 13 matches within the last week.</p>
