The team’s web site is also the number one most visited English football club by visitors from the United States. Here’s the top 10 list for the week ending May 17, 2008 (source: <a href="http://www.hitwise.com" target="_blank">Hitwise</a>).

There are quite a few observations that can be made. First, the number one most visited website in the UK is Liverpool’s web site. However, it’s only number four in the U.S. Second, it’s surprising that Tottenham Hotspur’s web site isn’t in the top ten and that Wigan’s web site gets even more traffic than theirs from U.S. visitors. Third, Leeds United shows yet again how much of a massive fan base they have around the world (and, in this case, in the USA). Fourth, it’s nice to see West Ham’s web site so high in the top 10.
Despite Chelsea marketing itself to Americans in recent years, the west London club is only in third place. Arsenal, who hasn’t landed on U.S. shores in years, sit comfortably in second place.

First off let me congratulate Manchester United on winning the UEFA Champions League on the 50th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster. Now onto the Championship Playoff Final between Bristol City and Hull City. Tomorrow these two surprise teams will battle at Wembley for the right to be the third club to be promoted to the Premiership. As a Derby fan I know what its like to be full of excitement and hope. The fans are no doubt restless, wrought with nerves and excitement all at once. I’m sure many a pint has already been drunk and many more will be as the night progresses. This is the chance for thier club to be one of the elite, one of those in the top tier of English football.
Bristol City and Hull both have surprised everyone by being in this match but neither are no less deserving. They have played well all season, Hull dominated Watford in thier tie while Bristol City got the job done in extra time against the hottest team in the Championship at the time Crystal Palace. You can throw everything out of the window previous to this match between the two teams, its a one off match and anything can happen. Good luck to both teams, may the fans have a wonderful time as I did last year and when the match is over I will welcome the winner to the Premiership. On Saturday, the League One Playoff Final between Leeds United and Doncaster Rovers will give us the third member coming up the CCC after Swansea City as League One Champs and Nottingham Forest(second place.)

Why? It’s been the number one most visited football website in the UK for months.

The chart also shows the massive fanbase that Leeds United continues to have around the world even though they’re still in League One. Also surprising is how well FootyMad does, which goes to show the power of football message boards.
The other surprising fact about the chart is that Liverpool’s website, despite being the most visited, is far from being the best club website in the Premier League. Portsmouth and Man United’s websites, just to name two, are far better.

I was up late last night and I haven’t had my coffee yet 🙂 The transfer market has had some interesting moves in the last few days and I will be back on Feb 1st to recap things. The news I want to discuss right now is the move Newcastle have made to sign Dennis Wise. 
Wise has left his role as Leeds manager and is going to be in charge of signing new players and developing Newcastle’s academy. He is not going to be involved in first-team matters but instead is supposed to assist the Newcastle board as an executive director on “football-related” matters. Newcastle cleared out a lot of the previous management team when Mike Ashley bought out Freddy Shepherd and this is a first step towards rebuilding their management team.
The real interest is that new manager Kevin Keegan has apparently had no say in this particular appointment, which many pundits feel he should have. Personally, I don’t agree. A “sporting director” takes a lot of pressure off the first-team manager in terms of transfer negotiations, day-to-day operations of the academy, etc. It’s a common setup in many other countries such as Italy and Spain but has not caught on yet in England. Many still feel that clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United are led by one strong figure but a closer look reveals that both Sir Alex and Arsene are working in tandem with their board and a strong support cast.
It feels like that’s what Newcastle are aiming to do and if that’s the case then it’s a step in the right direction. Whether Dennis Wise is the best person to take on that role is another question as he has only been in management a relatively short time. He started as a player-manager with Milwall in 2004 before moving on to Southampton, Swindon and finally Leeds but he did reasonably well everywhere he went. Wise has apparently been eager to get away from day-to-day management and move into more of an executive role and Newcastle have wanted someone on their board with hands-on football experience so the fit was good from that standpoint.
Newcastle will reportedly compensate Leeds to the tune of £1m. Newcastle will also hire Tony Jimenez as vice-president of player recruitment and Jeff Vetere from Real Madrid as technical co-ordinator. Jimenez is a former London property developer who has reportedly worked with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley in the past. Jimenez is said to be close to the former Tottenham director Paul Kemsley and through his contacts in Seville, was involved in bringing Juande Ramos to White Hart Lane.
Vetere was once an apprentice at Luton Town, then the youth team manager of Rushden &amp; Diamonds, but his journey upwards took him to Charlton as “overseas scouting co-ordinator” and his growing reputation was such that he moved last January to Real Madrid. Vetere is regarded as one of the game’s most knowledgeable experts on emerging talent and there were rumours that Keegan was involved in his hiring.
Vetere and Jimenez are already at work for Newcastle and were spotted sitting together recently at the Everton-Chelsea League Cup semi-final at Goodison Park.
