
<p>JPMorgan Chase is looking to invest up to $1 billion in Italy’s <a href="https://www.worldsoccertalk.com/serie-a-tv-schedule">Serie A</a>. This is according to a report by <em><a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/jpmorgan-interested-financing-italy-serie-as-media-business-sources-2023-01-26/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Reuters</a></em> on Friday. Sources with the outlet have confirmed that the financial company wants to fund the league’s media business in the process. </p>



<p>Teams in the Italian top flight have been informed of the potential move following a written letter to the league office. Officials for each club then, supposedly, attended a meeting about the investment on Thursday. </p>



<p>While an exact figure of the financial backing is not yet determined, JPMorgan is willing to put up between $750 million and $1 billion for Serie A. </p>



<h5>European leagues trying to keep up with EPL</h5>



<p>It’s been no secret that Serie A has been looking for ways to earn more revenue from media rights. This source of income typically accounts for about half of all revenue for each club in the nation’s top flight. England’s <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> dominates various annual money charts. Other top European soccer leagues, like Serie A, want to try to close this gap.</p>

<p>Germany’s Bundesliga <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/10/01/bundesliga-in-talks-with-private-equity-firms-to-sell-media-rights/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">previously had similar negotiations</a> to sell their media rights. Revealed in October, the German top flight was in talks with five different financial firms over investment into the league. The multi-billion fund is currently on hold, but should finalize in the near future.</p>



<h2>JPMorgan among multiple firms interested in Serie A media rights</h2>



<p>JPMorgan is not the only US company that has expressed interest in Serie A media rights. The Carlyle Group linked to a Serie A move in the fall of 2022. Apollo Global Management has also thrown their hat into the ring as well. The Italian league will reportedly access the best financial option possible.</p>



<p>News of the possible investment into Serie A comes at an interesting time. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/juventus-tv-schedule/">Juventus</a>, one of Italy’s most prominent clubs, received a 15-point deduction for financial irregularities. AC Milan, another top team in the country, is <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-01-26/italy-finance-police-seize-documents-on-ac-milan-sale-to-redbird" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">under investigation</a>, as well.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/uefa-nations-league-tv-schedule-and-links/">UEFA Nations League</a> semi-final matchups were announced on Wednesday.  <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/netherlands-national-team-tv-schedule/">Netherlands</a> have been drawn against <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/croatia-national-team-tv-schedule/">Croatia</a> in the first fixture, while <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/spain-national-team-tv-schedule/">Spain</a> face <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/italy-national-team-tv-schedule/">Italy</a> in the other semi-final game. Both matches will be played in June.</p>



<p>The Nations League semis will not include a two-legged affair. Instead, the Netherlands and Spain are set to host the two matches and the winners will advance straight to the final on June 18th. There will also be a third place playoff for the losing semi-final teams as well.</p>



<h5>Koeman looking forward to Croatia matchup</h5>



<p>Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman was asked about his future opponents following the draw. “It’s always tough against Croatia,” <a href="https://www.uefa.com/uefanationsleague/news/027d-172736c70ec8-7f5c6ad5534e-1000--nations-league-finals-draw-netherlands-vs-croatia-spain-vs-/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Koeman. “It would’ve been just as tough against Spain and against Italy, but we’re looking forward to it because we know Croatia are a really strong team and we need to be at our best to reach the final.”</p>



<p>He also acknowledged Croatia’s solid midfield, but heaped praise on the entire squad. “It’s the whole team,” continued Koeman. “Of course, we know the midfield with players like [Luka] Modric. They’re playing at a high level. They’re still in a good way physically and it’s also about the intensity of the team.” </p>



<p>Croatia and the Netherlands have faced off only twice before, with both teams winning one game. The Orange previously collected a victory in a friendly match in 2008, but Croatia won a 1998 World Cup game as well. </p>



<h5>Spain and Italy have long history</h5>



<p>On the other side, Spain and Italy are very familiar with each other. The two European powerhouses have met 39 total times. Spain takes a slight advantage in the win department with 12 victories compared to Italy’s 11. The first matchup between the two teams was 99 years ago.</p>



<p>Both semifinal games will be broadcasted on FOX Sports and fuboTV here in the States.</p>

<p>Former Sampdoria, <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/juventus-tv-schedule/">Juventus</a>, and <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/chelsea-tv-schedule/">Chelsea</a> striker Gianluca Vialli has passed away at the age of 58. Doctors diagnosed the Italian with pancreatic cancer in 2017. Although Vialli <a href="https:\/\/www.bbc.com/sport/football/46344674" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">claimed</a> that he was well a year later, the cancer returned in 2021. Health issues forced the former striker to leave his role as delegation chief of the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/nations/italy-national-team-tv-schedule/">Italy national team</a> last month.</p>



<p>Following the unfortunate news, Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina issued a stated about Vialli. “Gianluca was a splendid person and he leaves a void that cannot be filled,” <a href="https:\/\/www.bbc.com/sport/football/64039302" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Gravina.</p>



<p>“I hoped until the end that he would be able to perform another miracle. Yet I am comforted by the certainty that what he did for Italian football and the blue shirt will never be forgotten.”</p>



<h5>Former clubs issue heartfelt statements</h5>



<p>Vialli’s former clubs also issued official statements on the striker. Sampdoria, the team where he spent most of his career with, proclaimed that they would never forget Vialli.</p>



<p>“We won’t forget your 141 goals , your overhead kicks, your cashmere shirts, your earring, your platinum blonde hair, your Ultras bomber jacket. You gave us so much, we gave you so much: yes, it was love, reciprocal, infinite. A love that will not die today with you,” read the <a href="https:\/\/www.bbc.com/sport/football/64039302">statement</a>.</p>

<p>Chelsea praised Vialli’s courage and humor. The <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> side also stated that the striker had a place among the team’s greats. “A brilliant striker, a trophy-winning manager and a wonderful man, Luca’s place in the pantheon of Chelsea greats is assured. He will be deeply missed,” <a href="https:\/\/www.chelseafc.com/en/news/article/gianluca-vialli-1964-2023" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">claimed</a> the west London club.</p>



<h2>Gianluca Vialli scored goals and won trophies</h2>



<p>Vialli began his playing career with Cremonese before switching to Serie A teams Sampdoria and Juventus. The striker’s final move as a player was to Chelsea in 1996. Vialli managed to collect a plethora of trophies during his illustrious career. This includes Serie A, Coppa Italia, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League.</p>



<p>Individually, Vialli was an excellent goalscorer. In fact, he racked up over 250 club goals throughout his playing career. He also picked up 59 caps for the Italian national team as well, scoring 16 goals for his country.</p>



<p>There will be a minute’s silence before all Italian matches this weekend in the memory of Vialli.</p>

<p>The entire <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/juventus-tv-schedule/">Juventus</a> board of directors resigned on Monday. President Andrea Agnelli and vice president Pavel Nedved were both included in the walk out. </p>



<p>News of the mass resignations comes about a month after reports surfaced that the Italian club was under investigation for false accounting. Agnelli, Nedved, and 13 other officials at Juve were all named in the initial investigation. The club president previously had a request of house arrest rejected by a preliminary judge.</p>

<p>The crux of the inquiry involved whether or not the Turin-based team cashed in on illegal commissions on player transfers. However, Juve also possibly issued fake invoices for transfers that never actually happened. This could be deemed as false accounting.</p>



<p>Juve’s board of directors discussed these issues during a meeting on Monday. Ultimately, the decision is that a brand new board can handle the situation better.</p>



<h2>Juventus board resigns for betterment of club</h2>



<p>Agnelli had previously been with the club since 2010. The former team president wrote a letter explaining the circumstances to Juve staff. <a href="https:\/\/www.reuters.com/breakingviews/juventus-drama-calls-an-exor-exit-strategy-2022-11-29/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Reuters</a> obtained that letter. </p>



<p>In the letter, Agnelli described that the decision to step down was best for the club.</p>



<p>“When the team is not cohesive it becomes vulnerable and that can be fatal,” claimed Agnelli.</p>



<p>“This is when you need to keep calm and contain damages: the company is going through a delicate phase and we’re no longer cohesive. Better to quit all together, giving the chance to a new team to turn the game around.”</p>



<h5>Club also has on-field issues</h5>



<p>Juve have also endured a tough season on the pitch as well. The Old Lady only managed to win one of their six <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/2022/09/06/2022-23-uefa-champions-league-brings-several-groups-of-death/">Champions League group stage matches</a>. Subsequently, Juventus failed to qualify for the knockout round and transitioned to the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/europa-league-tv-schedule/">Europa League</a>.</p>



<p>Domestically, the Italian giants have also struggled. Although Juve have moved up to third in the Serie A standings, they were as low as eighth just five weeks ago.</p>



<p>Maurizio Arrivabene will take over as interim president of the team’s board. There is no plans for announcement on a new group until January. Then, a meeting takes place to determine the new board. </p>

<p>For the second straight tournament, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/italy-national-team-tv-schedule/">Italy</a> punched its ticket to the UEFA Nations League Finals.&nbsp;A masterclass of a performance in goal from Gianluigi Donnarumma held off the hosts as Italy did enough on the other end, 2-0.</p>
<p>Statistically speaking, Hungary outplayed Italy, just as it did to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/germany-national-team-tv-schedule/">Germany</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/england-national-team-tv-schedule/">England</a> in its previous two contests. Hungary collected over half the possession in the game and fired 13 shots at Donnarumma’s goal. Six of those actually forced a save out of the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/psg-tv-schedule/">PSG</a> shot stopper, but he was equal to all of them. That included a set of saves in quick succession as Hungary looked for an equalizer.</p>
<p>At the other end of the field, Giacomo Raspadori scored his second-consecutive game-winning goal in the UEFA Nations League with the opener. He also scored the only goal of the game against England in matchday five. To add insurance, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/inter-milan-tv-schedule/">Inter’s</a> Federico Dimarco put home Italy’s second to clinch its spot in the UEFA Nations League Finals.</p>
<h3>Italy in the UEFA Nations League Finals</h3>
<p>The Italians join the Netherlands and Croatia as the teams to qualify for the second stage of the UEFA Nations League this season. This is a familiar spot for Italy, having won third place in the 2021 Nations League Finals.</p>

<p>The Netherlands is also a team that made it this far in the past. The Dutch lost to Portugal in the inaugural Nations League Finals back in 2019. However, this chance at redemption comes at home, likely in Amsterdam. Yet, official confirmation over the hosting duties are to be determined.</p>
<p>Italy hosted last year, and comes off a triumph at Euro 2020 looking for more hardware out of Europe, regardless of World Cup qualifying struggles.</p>
<h5>Consolation for Hungary</h5>
<p>While Italy celebrates its bid into the UEFA Nations League Finals, it is heartbreak for Hungary. The Hungarians entered a group with three teams in the <a href="https://www.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/men?dateId=id13687" target="_blank" rel="noopener">top 11 of the FIFA World Rankings</a> in June 2022. Two of those teams just played each other in the Euro 2020 Finals in the summer before.</p>
<p>Despite that, Hungary picked up two wins against England, as well as a win and a draw against Germany. The only thing to do the Hungarians in was Italy, which dealt two key blows.</p>

Next campaign, England falls back into the second tier of the competition.</p>
<p>It was a brutal performance from much of the Three Lions. Despite going up against an Italy side that many believe is among the weaker in the side’s relative history, England failed to get anything going. Outside of a few headers from <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/08/20/kane-sets-premier-league-one-club-record-with-185th-spurs-goal/">Harry Kane</a> or <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/09/14/haaland-sinks-former-club-potter-era-starts-with-sputter/">Jude Bellingham</a>, England never truly tested Gianluigi Donnarumma.</p>
<p>Of course, Italy was not exactly pumping away with chances. Therefore, it is no surprise that Italy’s, and the game’s, lone goal came on a piece of brilliance. Napoli forward Giacomo Raspadori took a 50-yard pass from Leonardo Bonucci like a pillow. Then, he created an inkling of space with Eric Dier before wrapping the ball into the far post of Nick Pope. It was a goal from nothing, but it was enough to unseat England.</p>
<h3>England relegated in UEFA Nations League</h3>
<p>Perhaps the more telling story of the game, and England’s overall <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/09/16/fox-to-broadcast-less-than-half-of-uefa-nations-league-games/">Nations League campaign</a>, is the lack of goals. England has just one goal in five games played in the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League. That one goal came from a penalty to salvage a point in matchday two at <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/germany-national-team-tv-schedule/">Germany</a>. That, against seven goals conceded, albeit four against Hungary in a shocking display, doomed the three lions.</p>

<p>Hungary’s four-goal outburst against England in matchday four could prove pivotal on its own. The Hungarians, by far the underdog in a group consisting of England, Germany and Italy, sit <a href="https://www.uefa.com/uefanationsleague/standings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">atop the group</a> entering the final matchday on Monday. Hungary shocked the Germans on Friday with a 1-0 win in Leipzig. Now, Hungary is on 10 points with more than a clear path to the UEFA Nations League final phase.</p>
<p>Hungary gets there with a win or a draw, as Italy sits two points behind the Hungarians. It remains to be seen what comes out as a bigger story at the end of this group stage: Hungary finishing by far better than England, Germany and potentially Italy, or England’s beyond poor play throughout the competition.</p>
<p>With a World Cup around the corner, it is more than surprising that the two teams struggling the most are among the World Cup favorites.</p>
