The 2024/25 Premier League season kicked off on Friday as <a href="https://x.com/worldsoccertalk/status/1824548950818324746?s=61">Manchester United narrowly secured a 1-0 win against Fulham</a> after debutant Joshua Zirkzee’s late winner.



There were plenty of talking points from the season’s first round of Saturday fixtures. Liverpool featured in the early kick-off while Arsenal, Newcastle, and Aston Villa spearheaded our first roundup of the season.



Ipswich Town 0-2 Liverpool



Mo Salah’s brilliance in the early Saturday kick-off earned <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/liverpool-tv-schedule/">Liverpool</a> and new manager Arne Slot their first win in the post-Klopp era. The Egyptian has recorded nine goals in the first game week, more than any other player has scored.



However, it was a lackluster first half for Slot’s side against the newly-promoted side. Kieran McKenna’s side had a good first half at Portman Road, Ipswich’s personal fortress for much of last season. Liam Delap, who joined from Manchester City in the summer, posed as a nuisance through the middle of the pitch. 



As a result, Slot took off Jarrell Quansah at the halfway mark for Ibrahima Konaté. The Liverpool manager pinpointed the young center-back’s aerial duel losses after the match but coincidentally was also the turning point of Liverpool’s fortunes.



A delicious inside through ball by Trent Alexander-Arnold to Mo Salah broke the Ipswich defense at the hour mark. Diogo Jota coolly finished to break the deadlock.



A tease of ’Slot Ball’ soon followed as a one-two with Dominik Szoboszlai led to Salah’s record-breaking goal and took the game out of the newly promoted side’s sight.



<h2>Premier League highlight: Arsenal 2-0 Wolves</h2>

The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Gunners</a> were the package feature of the show in the collective round of matches. Mikel Arteta’s side eased to a comfortable victory as they took a 1-0 lead before half-time. Kai Havertz’s head met the pinpoint cross of Bukayo Saka. Havertz, who opened the season’s account for the North London outfit.



Wolves came out in the second half with an intent to control as much as 65% possession of the ball but ultimately failed to create any meaningful chances for themselves all afternoon. New striker Jorgen Strand Larsen had a first-half header saved by David Raya.



It was not long before Havertz and Saka linked up again. This time it was the Englishman on the scoresheet. Havertz laid a scenery for Saka to cut into the box and score a wonderfully curled shot into the right corner.



The win ensured three points for last season’s Premier League runners-up before they travel to face Aston Villa next Saturday.



<h2>Everton 0-3 Brighton &amp; Hove Albion</h2>



It was a sticky start to the Toffees season at home as they fell to a blistering 3-0 defeat to Brighton’s new manager Fabian Hurzeler.



The former St Pauli boss is the Premier League’s youngest manager in history, and all first impressions pointed towards a revitalization following last season’s late slump.



Brighton scored the opener in the 25th minute through. Kaoru Mitoma. A quick counter attack and some fine work by new signing Yankuba Minteh helped the Japanese score his first goal in 11 months.



In the second half, Everton will have felt hard done by an overturned VAR decision that denied them a penalty after Lewis Dunk’s foul on Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Further punishment followed as the Toffees were caught on the counterattack after Idrisa Gueye’s mistake allowed Danny Welbeck to stretch the Seagull’s lead.



It went from bad to worse as Ashley Young got a red card in the 66th minute after mishandling a ball that led to Mitoma running through on goal. Simon Adingra, another starlet who had not scored for months, slotted in a third for the Seagulls in a convincing win.



Newcastle United 1-0 Southampton



Joelinton’s goal before half-time was enough to secure a narrow home win for Eddie Howe’s side.



The game was an ill-tempered one; the two sides combined for 31 fouls throughout the match.. Fabian Schar was sent off for a mildly looking headbutt on Ben Brereton Diaz in the 28th minute. The Magpies held on for the majority of this game for a victory against the newly promoted Saints.



<h2>Nottingham Forest 1-1 AFC Bournemouth</h2>

In a game marred by a lengthy stoppage and an injury for Forest midfield Danilo, Forest and Bournemouth shared the spoils at City Ground.



The Brazilian clashed with Antoine Semenyo in the first half, which led to 12 minutes of stoppage time. Forest manager Nuno Espirito confirmed the worst after the game that Danilo suffered a broken ankle.



His replacement Ryan Yates’s shot needed an impressive save from Neto. But, Neto couldn’t get a firm grasp on the ball. The deflection landed in the path of Chris Wood, who opened the scoring.



Bournemouth was missing their new record signing Evanilson, but it was Semenyo who stepped up and capitalized on Forest defender Harry Toffolo’s misconstrued clearance to gift The Cherries a late 86th-minute equalizer.



West Ham United 1-2 Aston Villa



Wantaway striker Jhon Duran was the unlikely hero for Aston Villa in a thrilling encounter that rounded off Saturday’s Premier League fixtures.



Everton broke the deadlock just 3 minutes into the game. An inswinging corner by Youri Tielemans met the firing head of new signing Amadou Onana. It could have been more as the home team struggled to get to grips with the pace of the game.



However, the Hammers got a controversial penalty after Matty Cash fouled Tomas Soucek. The Polish defender got tangled up and wrapped his leg around Soucek despite getting a touch on the ball. VAR also supported the referee’s decision.



Lucas Paqueta equalised but West Ham left dramatics for the second half. Jhon Duran, who was publicly hopeful of a transfer to West Ham just a few weeks ago, combined as part of the super-sub trio with Ian Maatsen and Jacob Ramsey to pass through the West Ham defense and beat goalkeeper Areola for all three points.

Nottingham Forest has taken a bold step forward by bringing in Mark Clattenburg to help them navigate the unpredictable world of soccer officiating. In elite-level refereeing, his name is almost a byword.



The 48-year-old has a stellar 13-year <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> career under his belt. He has also managed the complex dynamics of the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/where-to-watch-uefa-champions-league-and-europa-league-on-us-tv-and-internet/">Champions League</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/uefa-european-championship-tv-schedule/">European Championship</a> finals.



This hiring follows a string of controversial judgments and VAR scandals that have tarnished <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/nottingham-forest-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers">Forest</a>‘s present campaign. The club have now promoted <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/referee-mark-clattenburg-joins-nbc-sports-boost-premier-league-coverage-20171124-CMS-227179.html">Clattenburg</a> to a key consulting position.



His goal is to help the team and the officials work together more effectively by clarifying the complex process of officiating decisions. This includes most notably the two uncalled penalties they were involved in with Brentford and Manchester United.



Forest’s 2-0 victory against West Ham, seen by Clattenburg at the City Ground, heralds a new era.



<h2>Several questioning rulings against their favor</h2>



The club has taken steps to address what it perceives as faults and irregularities in officiating. They have so far lodged various complaints with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).



Among the situations that have prompted these complaints are those involving Stuart Attwell and other match officials during the two matches. Their 3-2 loss against the Cherries resulted in a red card for Wily Boly.

A comprehensive investigation then led to an apology from referee chief Howard Webb. Additionally, they made a formal complaint against Ivan Toney. Brentford’s striker allegedly moved the foam before attempting a free-kick, and scoring.



On Saturday, in yet another unexpected occurrence, Maxwel Cornet tripped Neco Williams, denying Forest what seemed to be a simple penalty. But referee Thomas Bramall ordered play to continue, and video assistant referees did not step in.



<h2>What did Nuno Espirito Santo say?</h2>



With Clattenburg at the helm, Nottingham Forest have an exciting road ahead of them. Though unusual, the position of referees’ analyst reflects the sport’s dynamic nature, where players who grasp and use the nuances of refereeing have a distinct advantage.



With Clattenburg’s knowledge, the Reds should be able to better understand and respect on-field choices as the season progresses. Additionally, other clubs may follow their lead and change the narrative from one of conflict to one of cooperation by cultivating closer connections with the officiating community.



Now that the former referee has been appointed, the team’s coach Nuno Espirito Santo is hoping that VAR rulings will be clarified.



“I have not seen him yet. But what I expect is that somebody so expert and so good, will give us a clear view and a clear opinion on what is happening. I think everyone in this room is asking that. For me, I am asking myself why. I can accept that the referee did not see it.



“But when we have VAR, when it is so obvious, what I expect from Mark is that he will be able to say ‘this is why that was obvious’.



“We should have had a penalty, yes. When something is so obvious, I cannot say anything else other than the truth. For me, it is a penalty. Perhaps the referee did not see it. But if he has not seen it, VAR has to interfere and do something.



“They took two minutes to check it. After you have seen it, you ask yourself ‘why?’. Today the result was different. But that was not the case last week (against Newcastle), when the outcome was different”, he said.

I remember sitting this year in anticipation of the 3rd round draw as per usual after watching Kettering battle to a draw against Leeds United I had a feeling that this could be a draw to remember. My mate who supports Brighton had seen his team qualify to the third round as a league 1/2 team for the first time in his life (Brighton were in the Championship for two seasons so qualified automatically) and he was as excited as I’ve ever seen him been. Another mate, an Aston Villa supporter, was preying to the Gods that the Villans wouldn’t defy chance and draw Man Utd yet again. And me personally as a Toon supporter – there’s a team that wears red and white who were my preferred opponents.
Yet a lot of times these draws can end up as an anti-climax, particularly the 3rd round draw this year. It’s just such a great concept and in any football fans head who doesn’t follow the top four he would love it if Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea all got away draws against a bunch of brick layers and plasterers. Because that is what this is all about and what I personally love to see – the underdog getting a chance. Last year a local side near where I am from, Blyth Spartans got a 3rd round draw against Blackburn Rovers and even though they lost, it’s one of those unique type of matches in football. I’m not saying its a terrible draw, I just love to see a lot of interesting ties.
My Seagull friend was immediately brought down to earth as Brighton got an away tie against Torquay, Villa got a tricky fixture against Blackburn and the Geordie faithful will be forced to make the longest trip in English league football twice this season now as Plymouth were drawn as their opponents. Not inspiring for any of us (particularly now Plymouth have got a new manager and are hitting a bit of form and the Toon are dropping!). A lot of the Championship teams have difficult draws and there are 7 all Championship ties.
On a positive note that means at least 7 Championship teams will be in the 4th round. And Cardiff and Millwall in this past decade have proved that a great cup run can be a memorable thing, which can ultimately end up with a big day out at the end. When 2nd of January comes I know I will be excited about the cup once again because after all – this is what most English fans dream of seeing their club win. And more importantly we have a few interesting ties involving Championship sides (all times are GMT):
Nottingham Forest V Birmingham City – 2nd Jan 3pm:
When the draw was made it may of seemed like a slightly interesting tie, but both teams are in amazing form and both are putting their current unbeaten record on the line. Forest have made the City Ground a fortress this season and will be keen to test Paul Hart’s England credentials after recent cries were made to make the City stopper England’s World Cup choice. The FA cup was the one trophy that famously eluded legendary manager Brian Clough in his successful spell at the club and the last time the club lifted the title will be 51 years ago by the time the final comes around. Forest have won their last four at home so be aware Brummies!
Middlesbrough V Manchester City – 2nd Jan 3pm:
Middlesbrough have had a few troubles this season. Largely tipped by many to be the team most likely to be promoted back to the Premiership at the first time of asking, they decided to change things around and bring Gordon Strachan in. One win in their last five home games doesn’t make great reading coming into this one, especially as Roberto Mancini has come in and lifted Spirits at the sky blue outfit. You would forgive a Middlesbrough fan if a good cup run was the last thing on their mind but I’m sure Strachan will be aware that a victory against the ‘richest team in the world’ will lift the spirits of even the tea lady at the Riverside. It depends what Boro turns up on the day as they can go from the brilliance of dominated QPR 5-1 to disappointment of crumbling 3-0 to Blackpool. I’m sure any neutral would love to see a Boro victory in this match.
Portsmouth V Coventry City – Jan 2nd 3pm:
Coventry, until they lost 2-0 to the in form Forest, were starting to gather a bit of form and confidence and there is no better time to play Portsmouth in an FA cup-tie. Pompey are likely to be missing a number of their African internationals for this game and their team will most likely be pieced together from what is left of their squad. <a href="http://epltalk.com/breaking-news-portsmouth-face-winding-up-order/14299">Current financial issues</a> loom large over the 2008 winners and Coventry will no doubt fancy their chances in this match. This is a huge opportunity to pile more misery on the south coast team and take home a Premiership scalp and Chris Coleman will be letting his players know about the low morale of the Pompey players.
Reading V Liverpool – Jan 2nd 5.15pm:
If Reading manage to pull off a win in this game then the all too often used term ‘magic of the FA cup’ would never be more necessary to coin. Although Reading managed to end their horrible home run in November against Blackpool, it still only totalled three home wins in all of 2009. There has been no win in their last five games and caretaker Brian McDermott is currently managing the club. Although Liverpool have had their own troubles this season, they recently snatched a late winner at Villa Park in their most recent fixture – the sort of goal that could kick start any season. It’s mission impossible for Reading really and it will be interesting to see what team Rafa Benitez decides to field considering their options of silverware have dwindled down recently. A brave man would bet on Reading but stranger things have happened and neutrals will no doubt be cheering on the Royals come Saturday.
Chelsea V Watford – Jan 3rd 3pm:
<a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/dec/30/chelsea-roman-abramovich-debt-scolari">Debt free</a> Chelsea welcome cash strapped Watford this weekend; two very contrasting situations for two London clubs. Malky Mackay has done everything he can this season and you wouldn’t argue if he told you that the club has other priorities rather than&nbsp;a good cup run. Chelsea may have lost a number of key players to the African Cup of nations, but this game will give a chance to some of the younger players attempting to break through such as Daniel Sturridge; something that won’t help the Hornet’s cause. There’s bound to be a large following from the Watford fans and hopefully this can inspire the players to raise their game, despite the probable uncertainty over a lot of players futures.
So we are all geared up for an exciting weekend of knock out football and although the Premiership teams have the odds to win this thing, you can never count out anyone in the FA cup. Lower league sides in the past have often shown up the big boys time and time again and hopefully we’ll be in for a weekend of drama and great football. This weekend sees the entrance of the Premiership and Championship clubs in to the F.A. Cup as the worlds oldest domestic cup competition continues in its 128th year. It’s one of those weekends that gets football fans excited, throwing up all kinds of memories for fans of every club from every level of the domestic game. For fans of all clubs, the F.A. Cup offers us all the chance to dream that this could be our year.
This weekend the fans of Barrow, York City Luton Town and Forest Green Rovers will be bursting with pride as the take on league opposition. Disappointingly for the fan in me, only four non-league sides have made it through to the third round this season but there are still some tasty ties for this years game.

Stoke City, Sunderland, Southampton and Notts County will be the clubs trying to avoid the ignominy of a defeat to a non-league side, but with all three of the bigger clubs at home, I don’t think we’ll see any shocks in those particular ties. There are several ties that are eye opening for several reasons though and of those, Manchester United entertaining Leeds on Sunday is the pick of round. Leeds’ fall down the leagues has been spectacular, but they currently sit on top of Division One, looking certainties to return to the Championship.

It’ll be interesting to see how this resumption of the cross pennine rivalry will be played out, with no love love lost between either side. Of the top four sides in the Premiership, Arsenal certainly have the most difficult tie, with a London derby trip to West Ham United on Sunday as well. Chelsea and Liverpool should make light work of Watford and Reading respectively whilst Tottenham should win easily against Peterborough United.
Overall though, the chances of any Premiership clubs getting knocked out by lower league opponents look slim to be honest but there are a couple of tricky ties. Portsmouth will be hoping Coventry City won’t bring their recent good form to Fratton Park, whilst Birmingham City face a dangerous trip to Nottingham Forest. Manchester City visit Middlesbrough who have been bang out of form since they sacked Gareth Southgate but should be too strong.

Of the other recently promoted sides, Burnley and Wolves both face potential banana skin games at Milton Keynes Dons and Tranmere Rovers and may view the match as a chance to give secondary players a run out. Bolton Wanderers fans will probably be viewing the clash with Lincoln City, now managed by Blackburn Rovers old boy Chris Sutton, with renewed optimism following Gary Megson’s sacking earlier today.
What ever happens, 3 Premiership clubs will be out of the competition no matter what with three all Premiership ties in the third round. Aston Villa welcome Blackburn Rovers, whilst Wigan will be trying to put tonight’s thrashing at Old Trafford out of their minds as Hull City visit the D.W. Stadium and Arsenal travelling to West Ham United.
Overall though, this isn’t really a weekend for shocks, but the F.A.Cup has a reputation for shocking you when you least expect it and that’s why it’s still the best cup competition in the world. Here’s to a great weekend of cup football before we get back to the Premiership.
