<h4>Espanyol History</h4>



<p>Reial Club Deportiu Espanyol de Barcelona was founded in 1900. This original team, then known as Sociedad Española de Football, folded in 1906. Many of the players joined another club, which then merged with another, to be reformed as Club Deportivo Español in 1908. The current Catalan spelling of the club name was adopted nearly 90 years later in 1995.</p>



<p>Fittingly, <em>Espanyol</em> was the first Spanish club founded entirely by actual Spaniards. Other clubs of the era had been founded by British or European ex-pats. </p>



<p>In the 1910s, the club won several Catalan regional titles, and nearly won the Copa del Rey twice, but lost both times to Bilbao.</p>



<p>They would finally conquer the domestic cup in 1929, and again in 1940. These were to be the club’s last major titles for quite some time, as another would not come until the new millennium (the 2000 Copa del Rey). Another Copa followed in 2006, to date the club’s last big trophy. Espanyol fell just short of European glory on two occasions. They were the runners-up of the UEFA Cup in both 1988 and 2007.</p>



<p>Espanyol have never won La Liga, but they have won the Segunda División twice (and the women’s team won the Primera División in 2006). </p>



<p>Espanyol’s main rivals are FC Barcelona, who play only about 3 miles away at the famous Camp Nou. Barça have been dominant in the “Derbi Barceloní” – Espanyol have only finished above their rivals in the league table three times.</p>



<p>The club’s home ground Estadi Cornellà-El Prat opened in 2009, and seats 40,000 spectators. Espanyol is one of many Spanish clubs that is a broader sports organization. The club has affiliated teams in basketball, roller hockey, volleyball, and formerly baseball.</p>

<p>FC Barcelona’s celebration of <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/barcelona-cruise-past-espanyol-to-win-la-liga-title-20230514-WST-432881.html">winning LaLiga</a> against city rivals Espanyol stopped early as pitch invaders stormed Estadi Cornellà-El Prat. For Spanish soccer, it was ugly scenes all around. </p>



<p>FC Barcelona fans danced around on a rival’s field. Moreover, this is a rival likely to suffer relegation. However, the response from Espanyol supporters was shocking, to say the least. </p>

<p>Droves of fans ran at Barcelona players and security officials. The madness spilled into the players’ tunnel, where Sergio Busquets and other Barcelona players told the police to sort the issue out.</p>

<p>However, one of the most shocking twists needed video recordings. One of the people to run on the field and actually throw a TV camera to the ground was a member of the People’s Party of Catalonia, a political party in the city of Barcelona that leans conservative. Video shows Yago Darnell, an Espanyol ultra, attempting to hide his face as he <a href="https://twitter.com/DiegoFSRB/status/1658028278014148609" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">thrusts a massive camera onto its side</a>.</p>



<p>Darnell effectively serves on the city council of Sant Joan Despí, a smaller city within Barcelona that is just north of where Espanyol plays its games. However, the People’s Party asked Darnell to step down once video clearly showed his face. He obliged and resigned on Monday.</p>



<h2>Espanyol pitch invaders leave rivalry on bad note</h2>



<p>This Catalan derby may take a backseat to some of the other rivalries in Spain. El Clasico, the Seville derby and the Madrid derby are all highlight games. The same international passion does not exist for the Derbi Barceloní. Yet, this is a contest that extends back into the 1920s. In total, the two Catalan clubs have played one another over 200 times. Most of those are in LaLiga.</p>



<p>However, Espanyol faces relegation this season. That contributed to the fans’ emotion in storming at the Barcelona players. Therefore, in all likelihood, this is the last time these two will play each other for at least one season. Espanyol has been relegated five times before this campaign. On each occasion, it secured promotion at the first time of trying.</p>

<p>Barcelona claimed their 27<sup>th</sup> La Liga title after they beat cross-city rivals Espanyol 4-2 on Sunday evening. </p>

<h5>Barcelona win La Liga For First title since 2019</h5>



<p>This is also the Catalans’ first league title since the 2018-19 season. </p>



<p>Xavi’s men started on the front foot right from the get-go and were soon ahead in the 11<sup>th</sup> minute when <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/08/12/barcelona-finally-register-lewandowski-on-eve-of-new-season/">Robert Lewandowski </a>slotted home from Alejandro Balde’s cross from the left wing.</p>



<p>Nine minutes later, it was 2-0 when Balde got on the end of a fine lofted pass from Pedri from the right wing to double his side’s advantage. </p>



<p>Barcelona were at their brilliant best once again just five minutes from the first-half whistle when Lewandowski made it 3-0. </p>



<p>The Polish international had the easiest of finishes as he secured his brace following Raphinha’s fine-weighted ball from the right wing.</p>

<h5>Espanyol struggle to make impact</h5>



<p>It was a day to forget for Espanyol as they hardly offered anything against their opposition. The hosts looked second best in every department and soon after the restart it was 4-0 in the 53<sup>rd</sup> minute. </p>



<p>Jules Kounde got on the end of a fine cross-field ball from the ever-brilliant Frekie De Jong to put the game to bed. The French defender glanced the ball into the back of the net with a quality header to demonstrate the Blaugrana’s superiority on the day.</p>

<p>Javi Puado pulled one back for the hosts in the 73<sup>rd</sup> minute before Joselu got another consolation in the second minute of stoppage time to make it 2-4 on the day, a respectable score given the hosts’ lack of cutting edge throughout the game. </p>



<p>Espanyol, however, stay 19th at the foot of the standings with relegation looming large. </p>



<p>The result means Xavi has brought in much-needed stability to the club and with news of <a href="https://www.espn.co.uk/football/barcelona-espbarcelona/story/4926877/why-a-lionel-messi-return-to-barcelona-isnt-as-wild-as-it-sounds" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lionel Messi returning to Camp Nou</a> in the summer, things look bright for the Spanish giants. </p>



<p>Barcelona will be looking to build over the summer, and retaining the League title will be a priority. However, the Catalan giants are expected to focus more on the Champions League next season.</p>

<p>Barcelona played out a 1-1 draw against Espanyol in a controversial Catalan derby that saw both sides finish with ten men. </p>



<p>With Real Madrid winning against Real Valladolid on Friday evening, a win for <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/where-to-find-barcelona-vs-espanyol-on-us-tv-20221231-WST-412898.html">Barcelona</a> would have seen them lead their archrivals by two points at the top of the table, but the Camp Nou side could only get one point from the game.</p>



<h5>Barcelona Start Strong</h5>



<p>The home side made a strong start to the game with <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/2019/03/07/chelsea-cruise-past-dynamo-kiev-towards-europa-league-quarters/">Marcos Alonso</a> opening the scoresheet with a header in the seventh minute.</p>



<p>Andreas Christensen headed a corner onto the path of Alonso who thumped his header home to give Barcelona the perfect start to the derby.</p>

<p> The hosts should have been out of sight in the first twenty minutes but missed several glorious opportunities to extend their lead.</p>



<p>Ansu Fati missed two chances while Raphinha spurned a glorious one on one opportunity as the hosts failed to make their domination count as they headed into half time with a one goal lead. </p>



<p>Espanyol hardly got a foothold into the game with Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Ander ter Stegen having hardly anything to do in first half.</p>



<p>The hosts dropped their levels in the second half playing with a far less intensity and hardly showing urgency to get a second goal. Robert Lewandowski put a header just a yard wide in the 56<sup>th</sup> minute following a fantastic cross from Alonso.</p>



<p> An otherwise dull second half suddenly came to life when referee Mateu Lahoz started dishing out unnecessary yellow cards to players.</p>



<p>Espanyol got a <a href="https:\/\/www.theguardian.com/football/2022/dec/31/barcelona-espanyol-la-liga-match-report" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">golden opportunity</a> to restore parity after striker Joselu was brought down by Alonso in the 73<sup>rd</sup> minute and the Spaniard made no mistake to tie the game.</p>

<p>Four minutes later, Jordi Alba was sent off for dissent while Espanyol also had Vincius Souza, and Leandro Cabrera see red in a matter of minutes. However, after a VAR check Cabrera’s red card was rescinded which rounded off Lahoz’s poor officiating. </p>



<p>The game saw the referee giving out 14 yellow cards along with the two sending offs.</p>



<p>Lewandowski had the chance to grab all three points after being put through on goal but Espanyol goalkeeper Alvaro Fernandez denied the Polish striker to give the away side a point on their return back home. </p>



<p>Barcelona go into the new year at the top of standings on goal difference with 38 points from 15 games. </p>
