<p>Leeds have unveiled ambitious plans to expand Elland Road, their historic stadium, increasing capacity to 53,000 seats through a phased redevelopment. This expansion will see the club boost its seating capacity by over 15,000. This move reinforces the commitment to long-term growth while preserving the unique atmosphere that Elland Road is renowned for.</p>



<p>To keep the stadium’s restoration as smooth as possible, the project will be executed in stages. Therefore, fans can continue to attend matches without significant inconvenience. The modernization will also elevate the stadium to UEFA Category Four status. After the expansion, it will be among the elite venues capable of hosting major European and international fixtures.</p>



<p><a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/leeds-united-tv-schedule/">Leeds United</a> have called <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/leeds-finally-decide-on-elland-road-stadium-after-20-years-saga/">Elland Road</a> their home since the club’s 1919 foundation. Its expansion and modernization come at a pivotal time for the club as it seeks to accommodate its growing fan base. Despite the club’s relegation to the Championship, the Whites continue to attract sell-out crowds. Its current average attendance is over 36,000 and a staggering 26,000 fans are on the waiting list for season tickets.</p>



<p>As part of the stadium’s redevelopment, improvements will focus primarily on the West Stand (John Charles Stand) and the North Stand (Don Revie Stand). Both have facilities that no longer meet <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> standards. The John Charles Stand was originally constructed in 1957 following a fire in the previous West Stand. Thus, it will receive much-needed upgrades to enhance both general admission and hospitality areas.</p>



<h2>New vision for Elland Road’s modernization</h2>



<p>Paraag Marathe, chairman of Leeds, highlighted the project’s significance for the club and the community at large. <a href="https://www.leedsunited.com/en/news/leeds-united-football-club-announces-next-steps-in-plan-to-enhance-elland" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">He stated</a>: “We recognize how important Elland Road is to the Leeds United fans and the wider community. The opportunity to refresh a century-old stadium, coupled with the legacy of Leeds United, is unprecedented. Our plans reinforce our commitment to the long-term success of the club. I am excited that we are going to be able to welcome thousands more supporters to every game, in a stadium that retains the unique atmosphere of Elland Road.”</p>



<p>The expanded capacity will position Elland Road as the seventh-largest club ground in England, surpassing major stadiums like St. James’ Park and Everton’s Bramley Moore Dock once completed. Leeds United have sold out every home fixture for the past six years, underscoring the demand for a larger venue.</p>

<p>The redevelopment will occur in phases to limit capacity reductions and ensure the stadium remains functional throughout construction. The exact date of the expansion’s confirmation is still up in the air. There will be consultations with fans and local residents expected to shape the final plans. Importantly, the project is contingent upon the club securing a return to the Premier League. This requirement may not delay the project for more than three years.</p>



<p>The club has enlisted specialist acoustic consultants to preserve the stadium’s famous atmosphere. Additionally, Leeds hired local transport consultants to address access routes and traffic management around the stadium. There are plans to improve public transport connectivity to Elland Road.</p>



<h2>What does Leeds City Council think?</h2>



<p>The expansion project has garnered strong support from Leeds City Council, with Council Leader James Lewis acknowledging the potential economic and social benefits of the stadium’s redevelopment. He said:</p>



<p>“Expanding and enhancing the existing ground will allow many more fans access to games while protecting the unique Elland Road atmosphere. This investment can also be a catalyst for wider regeneration plans for south Leeds, which represents an opportunity of national significance.”</p>



<p>Plans are in place to complement the stadium’s expansion with broader infrastructure improvements, including upgrades to Leeds Railway Station and the introduction of the White Rose Rail Station. <p>Current Leeds United majority owner Andrea Radrizzani offered to put up the club’s stadium, Elland Road, as collateral to purchase Sampdoria. The Italian businessman currently owns more than 50% of the English club through his company Aser Ventures. Leeds were just relegated from the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Premier League</a> last weekend after a disastrous season.</p>



<p>According to <em><a href="https://theathletic.com/4568028/2023/06/01/leeds-elland-road-sampdoria-radrizzani/?source=twitteruk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Athletic</a></em>, Radrizzani has offered to use Elland Road as collateral to secure a $32 million loan. This loan then assisted the takeover of the Italian side. Much like Leeds, Sampdoria is suffering relegation this season. The Genoese side currently sits bottom of the Italian top flight and has collected just three victories in the league this season. Sampdoria will complete their campaign with a matchup against champions Napoli on Sunday.</p>



<h2>Leeds minority investors unaware of move between Elland Road and Sampdoria</h2>



<p>Radrizzani was not at Elland Road last Sunday for the team’s final match of the season. Instead, the Italian was working on the deal to buy Sampdoria. Leeds will return to the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/championship-tv-schedule/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Championship</a> after three years in the English top flight.</p>



<p>Although Radrizzani does currently have a majority stake in Leeds, 49ers Enterprises also controls about 44% of the team. According to the aforementioned news outlet, the minority investors were completely unaware of Elland Road’s use in the massive loan. The stadium is not, however, actually owned by Leeds. Radrizzani privately purchased Elland Road in 2017.</p>

<p><em>The Athletic</em> reached out to Radrizzani to discuss the Italian’s decision to use Elland Road as collateral. Radrizzani wasn’t exactly open to talking about the move. “What Aser Ventures does with its assets which includes several companies including Leeds United, Greenfield and Elland Road.. it’s none of your business,” stated the businessman.</p>



<h5>49ers Enterprises likely to restart negotiations for club</h5>



<p>49ers Enterprises have <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/leeds-owner-considering-bid-for-inter-milan-if-lufc-stays-in-epl-20230414-WST-428570.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">made it known</a> that they are willing to purchase more of a stake in Leeds to become majority owners. However, previous considerations depended on the club staying in the Premier League. Things have changed on this front now that the Whites will take part in the Championship next season.</p>



<p>Nevertheless, Radrizzani and 49ers Enterprises should begin renegotiations once again for the buyout. The eventual final purchase price will surely be lower than first expected because of the relegation.</p>

Andrea Radrizzani has reportedly put Leeds United's stadium, Elland Road, up as collateral to purchase Sampdoria.

<p>Leeds United <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/leeds-sack-jesse-marsch-after-only-2-league-wins-in-6-months-20230206-WST-418757.html">sacked</a> Jesse Marsch this week with the club sat firmly in a relegation scrap in <a href="https://www.premierleague.com/tables" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">16th</a> position. It was less than a year after the American’s arrival at Elland Road. Back then, Leeds was in a similar position. However, Marsch helped <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/jesse-marsch-is-leeds-american-savior-from-relegation-20220408-CMS-378881.html">propel Leeds to survival</a> last season in the Premier League. </p>



<p>However, he failed to implement enough change to provide Leeds more comfort in the English top flight. The issue was Leeds United bleeding goals. After 20 games under Marsch, Leeds conceded 34 goals. Only Bournemouth, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City have more goals against. </p>



<p>Much of Marsch’s strategy relies on pressing, forcing players under pressure and hitting the opponents quick. That tactic made for exciting games, sure. Leeds was in a draw or one-goal game in six of the last seven Premier League games under Jesse Marsch. The only problem was that Leeds United was not winning these games. A one-goal loss at <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/tottenham-beat-ten-man-leeds-with-thrilling-second-half-comeback-20221112-WST-408056.html">Tottenham</a>, Aston Villa and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/nottingham-forest-edge-leeds-as-pressure-mounts-on-marsch-20230205-WST-418697.html">Nottingham Forest</a> compounded three draws.</p>



<p>It follows a trend that dates back to his arrival in England. Over his near-year in the Premier League, Marsch coached 32 games. He only won eight of those games, drew nine and lost 15 more. That points per game of just over one is dismal, even in the tightly contested Premier League. Moreover, it would be easy to say Marsch did not have the backing of the Leeds executives. The opposite is true.</p>



<h2>Lack of Leeds United improvement under Jesse Marsch</h2>



<p>Leeds made a number of key signings this summer and winter in a bid to aid the American manager. Notably, at least for some circles, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/adams-joins-american-contingent-at-leeds-20220706-CMS-392295.html">Tyler Adams</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/rb-salzburg-midfielder-aaronson-joins-leeds-20220526-CMS-387066.html">Brenden Aaronson</a> arrived from RB Leipzig and Salzburg, respectively. Marsch, a previous coach at both of those clubs, persuaded Leeds to spend over $50 million on two Americans 23 and under. </p>



<p>In total, seven players came in under the oversight of Jesse Marsch that individually cost more than $12 million. Interestingly, the most successful one appears to be Wilfried Gnoto, the cheapest of the bunch at just over $5 million.</p>



<p>Georginio Rutter arrived in the winter as the club-record arrival based on transfer fee. As did <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/leeds-united-interested-in-signing-weston-mckennie-20230124-WST-416653.html">Weston McKennie</a> on loan from Juventus. Granted, those players had limited time to help Marsch save his job. </p>



<p>However, despite spending heavy in the transfer window, Leeds struggled to make a difference. They showed a glimpse early on, picking up seven points in the opening three games of the campaign. </p>



<p>However, that could add pressure to the side to perform regularly. Jermaine Beckford, a former player who made over 125 appearances with Leeds, says that pressure can mount on young players with high transfer fees.</p>

<p>“When [high transfer fees are] the case, naturally the pressure comes along with that,” Beckford said on Generation xG, available on <a href="https://imp.i305175.net/c/330866/1313913/11640" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Peacock</a>‘s Premier League TV channel. “The expectation level for performances not only for results, goals scored and for fans to be excited, that level rises as well. Unfortunately, that has not been the case.”</p>



<h5>Not taking the chances</h5>



<p>The major counter in favor of Marsch was that Leeds simply did not take its chances. For sure, Marsch has a say over that, and finishing can be improved in training. The crew on Generation xG recounted the Leeds game against Nottingham Forest, Marsch’s last in charge. </p>



<p>In that game, Leeds mustered 70% possession, its highest in a Premier League game this season. It had 10 total shots, with four on target, double Forest’s. According to <a href="https://fbref.com/en/squads/5bfb9659/Leeds-United-Stats" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Football Reference</a>, Leeds had an expected goal ratio of 0.9. In other words, it clearly missed its chances. </p>



<p>As stated, Marsch is somewhat to blame for that, and that is why the club sacked him midseason. That’s a common move for clubs in the relegation scrap. Five of the six clubs 15th and lower have had managerial changes this year. The exception is David Moyes at West Ham.</p>



<p>The next manager at Leeds inherits a similar situation to what Marsch had upon his arrival at Elland Road. With expensive players in the squad, there is no reason for Leeds to go back down to the Championship.</p>

<p>In a refreshing change of events, former Birmingham City owners, David Gold and David Sullivan took control of the Hammers and admitted straightaway the mess that West Ham United have been battling with. Since the crashing collapse of the Icelandic banking system, West Ham had been financially stricken and the true extent of the footballing debt is now apparent. The Hammers owe £110 million out. One Hundred and Ten Million pounds.</p>
<p>Only in November did C.B. Holdings claim that the Hammers were in debt to the tune of £38 million, misleading the fans in to thinking that the situation was nowhere near as bad as some in the media had reported. In fact it was almost 3 times as bad as they made out and the new owners/controllers made clear exactly where they debts lay. They also confirmed that the club were going to have to sell players in this transfer window, contrary to the clubs previous stance. An immediate cash injection of £8 million was needed to keep the club going.</p>

<p>The list reads like a what not to do in football, or to put it another way, how to run a club like Leeds United. It’s as if someone wrote a business plan based on what went wrong at Elland Road and it was mistranslated into Icelandic to make it seem positive. It’s madness to see the debt and borrowing going on at West Ham over the last 3 years.</p>

<li>£50 million owed to banks.</li>
<li>£40 million owed to other clubs for transfers.</li>
<li>The £40 million owed to other clubs, includes £20 million compensation to Sheffield United.</li>
<li>Alan Curbishley is still owed his severance deal after winning his case for constructive dismissal</li>
<li>No-one owes West Ham any money, all player transfer fees that were received paid the bank debt immediately</li>
<li>C.B. Holdings had borrowed money against the next two seasons season ticket revenue</li>
<li>There is no money for strengthening the squad.</li>
</ul>
<p>Now this paints a completely different figure to what the West Ham fans believed, rightly or wrongly what the were being told. The previous regime were filling there heads with nonsense. It is a very real prospect that relegation would have seen West Ham implode financially. No ifs, no buts, they were immediately into administration. After all the information about Leeds United, C.B. Holdings were following exactly the same route.</p>

<p>It seems like absolute madness that not one lesson from the Yorkshire clubs demise has served to teach anyone anything it seems, as we see with the issues at Manchester United, Portsmouth and Liverpool in the last week. Regardless of the riches awash for the Premiership clubs, you still have to cut your cloth accordingly. Someone sooner or later is going to fall over the edge, which is a subject I’m going to be looking at in more depth for EPLtalk.com next week.</p>
<p>Gold and Sullivan have acted quickly in bringing in their trusted lieutenant, Karen Brady as vice chairman and she’ll be quick to install some much needed pragmatism at Upton Park. They are now going to talk to Newham council about moving to <a href="http://www.london2012.com/" target="_blank">the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 Olympics</a>. That could be&nbsp; a challenge as Tottenham enquired about taking it over and were plainly told it was not available. The Olympic stadium is set to be reduced from its 80,000 capacity down to a pointless 30,000, for which there is neither the use nor the need.</p>

<p>The NFL could still play a part in the stadium’s future use that could play into West Ham’s hands. The NFL have earmarked that the often mooted London franchise’s potential base could be there. It would certainly make more sense to use it as a dual sport stadium than a white elephant for athletics, which is the current plan. There is neither the inclination or support for that size of athletics venue in London, they should sell it and use the money to redevelop Crystal Palace Athletic Stadium.</p>
<p>So now, West Ham have to focus on the future and the fans will be thankful that regardless of the criticisms that could be placed at Gold and Sullivan’s door during their tenure at Birmingham City, they still have a club to support. The work is now on to bring in fresh investment to try and work off the remaining debt and crucial to that is the fact that West Ham United need to stay up.</p>
<p>Gianfranco Zola has been nothing but a gentlemen throughout this difficult period for him and he needs to make sure that he can keep his side together for one almighty relegation scrap. For a first job, he has certainly been earning his money, of that there is no doubt. In the next six games, West Ham face Portsmouth, Blackburn Rovers, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley, Birmingham City and Hull City. Come the end of February, Gold, Sullivan and Zola will know exactly the size of the task to keep West Ham United in the Premier League.</p>

<p>The morning after Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League has seen the club reiterate that Rafa Benitez’s position is safe.&nbsp; Not qualifying for the Champions League knock out stage is a big blow for a club that strives for parity at Europe’s top table. Throughout this season, Liverpool have struggled in the League and in Europe. Last night saw them relying on Lyon to win in Florence, but what astounded me was the lack of pushing for extra goals.</p>
<p>Liverpool needed goals, but towards the end of the game, Benitez’s substitutions began to become increasingly surreal. Ngog was removed for Benayoun, Left backs were exchanged and Aquilani was brought on for 34 seconds.&nbsp; All the while, Liverpool were praying for Lyon to score but if they had, Benitez needed Liverpool to score more. If Lyon had scored and the game in Florence was drawn, Liverpool then could qualify by beating Fiorentina 3-0 at Anfield.</p>

<p>Yet what would have happened if Liverpool had only won 2-0? It would have then come down to goal difference and Liverpool would have lost out again. As it is, it doesn’t matter anymore, but what struck me before the game yesterday was Jamie Carragher’s comments about winning the Europa League to give the season a <em>“gloss”</em>. This Liverpool side is possibly the weakest since Gerard Houillier left the club in the summer of 2004, they’re struggling in the league and only have the Europa League and the F.A. Cup to aim for. What kind of gloss does winning the Europa League give you?</p>
<p>The title is a non starter, but is it beyond them to finish 4th? They are only 5 points off 4th currently but the next 3 league games could see them fall further behind. Tough trips to Everton and Blackburn are followed by a visit from Arsenal whilst the upwardly mobile trio of Tottenham, Manchester City and Aston Villa are playing well. For Liverpool to profit they have to hope they can hit title form, without having a hope of the title and all 3 of their rivals fall away spectacularly.Is that possible?</p>
<p>Of course, people point to the injury crisis that seems to have engulfed Liverpool, but this squad is solely the work of Rafa Benitez. It is only weak because he has created such a situation. He still relies on 2 players he inherited, Gerrard and Carragher, who are coming to the end of their natural careers. Gerrard is 29 and Carragher is 32 in January and has probably had his most fitful season in the red shirt. Gerrard can still drag Liverpool forward, but for how much longer? How much longer can Carragher keep going? How much will it cost to replace them?</p>

<p>Last year for me saw Liverpool punching way above their weight when they ran Manchester United so close for the title. Chelsea were in flux, Arsenal were still growing as a side. Spurs were in a crisis of their own creation, Villa lost their way and Manchester City were still coming to grips with their new found wealth. That is not the case this season, all of their rivals are in much better shape and all of them have money to spend, which is certainly not the case at Anfield.</p>
<p>The constant negativity towards the owners has sullied the the picture at Anfield, taking the focus away from the playing squad. Blaming bad luck, referees and injuries is becoming the norm from Benitez. Yes they have had bad luck with injuries but so have Chelsea and Manchester United. Chelsea were without Lampard, Drogba, Ballack, Boswinga and Carvalho on Saturday and thumped Wolves 4-0. Would a Liverpool side without Torres, Gerrard, Carragher, Mascherano and Johnson do so?</p>

<p>Of course the added poignancy here for Liverpool is that they can’t afford to sack Benitez regardless of how bad this season turns out for them. The last accounts filed for 2007-2008 saw Liverpool make a loss of £41.5 million on top of a £290 million debt. There is no doubt that Hicks and Gillett have saddled the club with debt, but at what point does the playing squad become the main area for concern? It is a dangerous game to assume Liverpool can walk in to the Europa League and win it.</p>
<p>There will be other footballing giants in the next round of the competition, which Liverpool will have to be aware of. Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Marseille, Real Madrid, AC Milan, CSKA Moscow and Athletico Madrid could all join them. It will not be easy for a team playing well to win it, never mind one that is struggling across all fronts to find some form. Benitez has to find a settled side and stick with it, forget the Europa League and concentrate on the league. Benitez’s obsession with Europe could completely derail the league with dire consequences.</p>

<p>What if Liverpool don’t win the Europa League and finish 5th? That’s a £40 million hole in a teams finances that is losing £40 million a year already. Across the Pennines, the effects of financial mismanagement coupled with failure to qualify for the Champions League can still be seen at Elland Road. That’s a very real scenario, regardless of history and standing. Liverpool need to get going and quickly or a disappointing season will become a catastrophic one within weeks.</p>

<p>Somewhere between Leeds and Manchester on the M62 I was able to truly digest my four-day jaunt back to my native land for the third round of the Carling Cup. Working in football in the United States is a great privilege, and in Pacific Northwest the advent of Seattle Sounders FC has been a revelation for Major League Soccer. However, there is simply no substitute for a strong dose of the English game. As soon as I got off the plane and began preparing for the third round tie between Leeds United and Liverpool old emotions began flooding back.</p>
<p>Long before kickoff all of Yorkshire was buzzing with conversation about this massive fixture. I was reminded of match-ups between these storied northern clubs that took place during my childhood. There were numerous references to Mark Viduka, Tony Yeboah, and other Leeds legends that put Liverpool to the sword in ‘the good old days’. Despite the fact that Leeds and Liverpool had not played one another in five years, the atmosphere on match day was strangely familiar. Leeds city centre was stuffed with United supporters, as many of the old guard came out of the woodwork for this unique encounter. In every pub classic anthems like “In Your Liverpool Slums” and “Only Sing When You’re Stealing” echoed in jubilation, and I had to be careful to conceal my Liverpool leanings. My father and his mates reveled in my discomfort, and after several hours of banter the supporters began boarding coaches for Elland Road.</p>
<p>Predictably, the motorway resembled a car park, and the heavily inebriated Leeds mob forced the doors of the coach open in mid traffic. A sea of white and blue washed over the road, and in the distance Elland Road loomed ominously over the eager supporters. While this historic football ground is revered by the Leeds faithful, away fans approach Elland Road with caution during their respective visits. This was no different for the red and white clad Liverpool horde, and a large police presence was on hand to snuff out any trouble. As helicopters circled the ground with their spotlights aimed at the hooligan element, my large party of family and friends dipped inside the Peacock for one last pint before kickoff.</p>

<p>The atmosphere in the pub and around the ground was simply electric. It was as if the years had been rolled back to reveal a fixture between two of the top teams in England competing for Champions League positioning. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. Prior to the match, Leeds United manager Simon Grayson stated that he did not want his side to be distracted from the League One campaign. While this one-off fixture with Liverpool presented a wonderful opportunity for Leeds, Grayson wisely played down the Carling Cup tie to keep his side on task. Leeds are two leagues and forty places below their Scouse counterparts in the English football pyramid, and few were expecting the Yorkshire club to push Liverpool.</p>
<p>Yet as the supporters filed into the ground there was a sense that Leeds were truly up for this big occasion. The Elland Road end was filled with 7,000 Liverpool supporters, as the boisterous Mereysiders stretched from the Lowfields paddock all the way to the West Stand. While these individuals delivered a powerful rendition of “The Fields of Anfield Road”, Leeds United’s supporters refused to be outdone and responded in kind with an overwhelming version of “Marching on Together”. These competing sets of supporters created a cacophony of noise, and Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher hailed the atmosphere as, “One of the best in England.”&nbsp; Leeds routinely draw over 25,000 people to League One matches, but on this occasion Elland Road was packed to the hilt with a capacity crowd of 40,000 on hand. The noise inside the stadium was hair raising, and United’s form on the pitch only increased the fervor.</p>
<p>Unlike many lower league sides that encounter Premier League opposition in cup ties, Leeds did not panic against the likes of Carragher, Javier Mascherano, and Ryan Babel. Liverpool manager Raphael Benitez was even forced to bring on Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson in the later stages of the match, while Fernando Torres eagerly roamed the touchline. Leeds played their usual brand of dynamic football, maintaining consistent build-up through the midfield and feeding the ball to star target man Jermaine Beckford. The Whites attacked beautifully, and on 13 minutes Beckford headed the ball towards Luciano Becchio who placed an attempt into the back of the Liverpool net. With an early 1-0 lead, United supporters shook the stands with their emphatic celebrations. Unfortunately, the center official waived the goal off after the linesman declared both Beckford and Becchio offside. Television replay revealed that this call was inaccurate and that the goal was indeed valid, but Leeds could do nothing to plead their case.</p>
<p>While United mounted several other scoring opportunities, including a point blank attempt on goal by Beckford, Leeds were unable to find the back of the net again. Liverpool withstood the pressure and claimed a 1-0 lead through David Ngog in the 66<sup>th</sup> minute, sending the away end into raucous scenes of merriment. The Merseysiders retained their lead until the final whistle, but Leeds proved their worth against one of the top sides in the country. Grayson could not hide his admiration after the match, stating, “Nobody expected us to win this game apart from the players in our dressing room and, if you speak to them, they’re gutted.”</p>
<p>The Carling Cup is often viewed as an inferior competition contrasted with league and FA Cup campaigns, but you wouldn’t know that at Elland Road on Tuesday evening. Leeds supporters left the stadium with their heads held high and a feeling of satisfaction, knowing that their side played with the grit and pride that is associated with their iconic white shirt. Liverpool boss Raphael Benitez hailed the home support in his first appearance at Elland Road, and the Anfield manager appeared relived to have claimed a result at the end of the night.</p>

<p>Although I was off to Eastlands the next day to see Manchester City take on Fulham in continued Carling Cup action, the conversation revolved around Leeds’ performance late into the night. At Del Rio’s Italian restaurant in York (a regular finishing point for my football group), United supporters lamented missed opportunities, but ultimately there was a feeling of pride in the club’s efforts. For a side that has been relegated twice in four years and suffered a fifteen-point deduction, this was indeed a good thing.</p>
<p>Leeds supporters are many things but no one can accuse them of disloyalty. As the club anthem states, “We’ve been through it all together, and we’ve had our ups and downs.” For now it seems that the downward spiral may have ended, and if Leeds can continue to maintain pole position in League One, it may not be too long before Liverpool return to Elland Road.</p>
