Few sports can move beyond a country’s borders and take on a truly global audience. Soccer, basketball, cricket, hockey, and tennis are among those few, attracting viewers and potential players from nearly every place on the planet.&nbsp;



Despite the massive audiences each sport draws in weekly, it would be easy enough to think that there is little opportunity for crossover across different sports, yet basketball’s <a href="https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EuroLeague</a> dismisses such a suggestion.



The equivalent to soccer’s Champions League, the EuroLeague has pitted the best teams from across the continent against one another for over sixty-five years. Several of the dominant sides in the league represent the most popular soccer clubs in Europe due to the usage of a multi-sport model. Each season, eighteen teams participate, ten of which use a multi-sport model in which they have an elite-level soccer team. 



<h2>Soccer clubs dominating European basketball</h2>



With the EuroLeague remaining the elite competition in European basketball, here are the soccer teams that have a basketball counterpart dominating the competition.



Honorable mentions – Bayern Munich, Monaco. Maccabi Tel Aviv &amp; Fenerbahçe:



Despite both <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/bayern-munich-tv-schedule/">Bayern Munich</a> and Monaco failing to replicate their soccer successes on the basketball court, both have made efforts to leave their mark on the sport. Neither side as of the time of writing has reached a EuroLeague final, but both currently find themselves in the top ten positions of the competition. Monaco in particular has shown signs of improvement in recent years, finishing third in the league stage of last season, as well as finishing third overall in the previous season.&nbsp;



In the case of Fenerbahçe, the Turkish team reached three consecutive finals starting in the 2015-2016 season, with the side picking up their first EuroLeague trophy amidst this three-season run. Finally, Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv has collected over one hundred major honors in their history including fifty-seven Israeli League titles. Their performances in Europe have seen Maccabi Tel Aviv claim the fourth most EuroLeague championships of any side with six.



<h2>Real Madrid – EuroLeague titles: 11</h2>



Embodying the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/real-madrid-tv-schedule/">Real Madrid</a> DNA, the greatest team in European soccer history is also the greatest team in European basketball history. With twenty-one EuroLeague final appearances, eleven of which have resulted in victory for Los Blancos, no team has lifted the historic trophy as many times as Real.&nbsp;



Famous ex-players for Real include five-time NBA All-Star Luka Dončić, who spent three years with the Spanish giants before being drafted as the 3rd pick in the 2018 NBA draft. His final season in Spain saw him crowned the EuroLeague MVP as he helped Real lift the league title. In the years since both club and player have continued to dominate in their respective fields.&nbsp;



Across the last three seasons, Real has reached the final of the EuroLeague in all three years, a streak they will look to continue this campaign. Meanwhile, Dončić was named the NBA’s Rookie of the Year in 2019, as well as scoring the most points in the league across the 23-24 NBA season.

<h2>Panathinaikos – EuroLeague titles: 7</h2>



Whilst the NBA’s ‘Greek Freak’ Giannis Antetokounmpo has continued to tear up the NBA, the EuroLeague has seen Panathinaikos, a team led by his younger brother Kostas have similar levels of success. With twenty-two NBA appearances under his belt, Kostas is now part of the Panathinaikos side that went on to lift their seventh EuroLeague last season.



Battling off fierce competition, the Greek side would finish 2nd in last season’s regular season stage, before beating Maccabi Tel Aviv 3-2 in a best-of-five series in the quarter-finals. They would then go onto face and beat Fenerbahce and ultimately Real Madrid, to secure their place as the now defending EuroLeague champions.&nbsp;



Domestically Panathinaikos’ success has been irrefutable. Far and away the best team in Greek League history, the team in green and white have won their domestic league on a record forty occasions. The highlight of Panathinaikos’ domestic success was a staggering run of nine seasons where they were crowned champions stretching from the 02/03 season to the 10/11 campaign.



<h2>Barcelona – EuroLeague titles: 2</h2>



Even if Barcelona has not quite managed to equal the five European titles that their soccer outfit has won, on the basketball court the club has consistently remained one of the best teams in the EuroLeague.



With Jabari Parker, 2019 EuroLeague MVP Jan Veselý and Justin Anderson, Barcelona’s squad features three first-round picks from their respective NBA drafts. Including the rest of the squad, and then you’re looking at a team that has a combined 1,898 NBA appearances, multiple Olympic bronze medals, and one EuroLeague championship.&nbsp;



So, despite being without a EuroLeague championship since the 09/10 season, the Catalan side has shown huge promise of late, reaching the top four three times since the 20/21 campaign. As of the end of October, Barcelona stands as the league leader, winning five of their opening six games, only losing in their opening game against Lithuanian side Žalgiris Kaunas.

<h2>Olympiacos – EuroLeague titles: 3</h2>



On the soccer pitch, Olympiacos are the reigning European Conference League champions. On the court, the team’s three EuroLeague titles place them as one of the most successful in the competition’s history.



Though the Greek side has been without a EuroLeague championship for over a decade, they have remained one of the best teams in the competition in the years since their last title. Across the last ten years, Olympiacos have finished in the top four places on five occasions, only losing the 22/23 final by a single point to Real Madrid. Aided by the arrival of former NBA shooting guard Evan Fournier in September, Olympiacos will look to go one step further this season and win the EuroLeague championship once again.&nbsp;

Soccer clubs and European basketball mix in an unusual way in the EuroLeague. We take a look at the most successful soccer clubs in bball.

The recent talk about the creation of a <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/european-super-league-set-to-attempt-relaunch-in-2024-20221019-WST-404971.html">European Super League</a> in soccer mirrors European basketball over the last two decades. 



Real Madrid, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/joan-laporta-wants-super-league-to-replace-champions-league-20221009-WST-403533.html">Barcelona</a>, Juventus and other clubs continue to pioneer the plan for the competition. In that case, European soccer could very easily wind up with the same look as basketball in Europe. It is not entirely a pretty picture.



Here is a look at basketball’s structure in Europe with a brief history of how we got to this point:



<h5>Today’s European basketball structure</h5>



Currently, there are four continental competitions for basketball in Europe.



<ul><li>EuroLeague (18 teams)</li><li>EuroCup (20 teams)</li><li>Champions League (52 teams)</li><li>Europe Cup (47 teams)</li></ul>



The first two competitions, EuroLeague &amp; EuroCup are controlled by EuroLeague Basketball. Meanwhile, FIBA Europe controls the other two. There are, of course, national leagues, domestic cup competitions and regional leagues, too. 



But, for the purposes of comparing how a future structure of European soccer may look, let’s concentrate on the four continental competitions.



<h5>How did we get here</h5>



The top of the basketball pyramid is FIBA. It is the equivalent of FIFA in soccer. FIBA EUROPE is the arm of FIBA that regulates the game in Europe. Think UEFA overseeing European soccer as a connection to FIFA. FIBA originally established the FIBA European Champions Cup in 1958. In 1996, this competition took on the name EuroLeague in 1996. 



After the 1999-2000 season, nine clubs broke away from FIBA to create a new league. To add insult to injury for FIBA, they never trademarked the name EuroLeague. The breakaway league quickly adopted this name. 



The reason for the breakaway is exactly that which we are witnessing today in European soccer. Select teams brought in more money, and they wanted assurances that they could be in a top, money-making competition without relying on qualifying through league position. Two of those members align with the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/uefa-and-fifa-cant-block-european-super-league-court-rules-20230131-WST-417717.html">European Super League</a> in soccer, Real Madrid and Barcelona.



What followed for the next 2 decades was threats, sanctions and a division of basketball that left fans confused, angry &amp; many never returning to the arenas they once occupied.



<h5>EuroLeague Today</h5>



Today’s EuroLeague operates under the ULEB umbrella, originally formed in 1991 by French, Italian &amp; Spanish clubs. It is very similar to the European Club Association. Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli was the President of the ECA, and he was a leading proponent of the European Super League. 



The EuroLeague has 18 teams, 12 of which have long term licenses. The other six work under one- and two-year licenses. It’s become a complicated semi-closed league structure today. It even introduced a promotion/relegation system. 



In 2002, ‘EuroLeague Basketball’ created a new competition called the ULEB Cup, now known as the EuroCup. The top 2 teams each season in the EuroCup are given one-year licenses to compete in the EuroLeague, thus creating a promotion/relegation system. 



As for FIBA, they operate 2 European competitions which have now been named ‘Champions League’ and ‘Europe Cup.’



The two FIBA competitions are well below in quality to the two ULEB competitions, attracting only lower-tiered clubs. International dates for national competitions come into dispute as well. The European competitions alongside national championships &amp; domestic cup competitions make for crowded calendars.



<h2>Is European soccer following its basketball counterpart?</h2>



Understanding what has transpired in basketball in Europe creates a lot of clarity to the battle going on right now in European soccer. ‘FIBA Europe’ got relegated to second-class citizenship compared to Euroleague Basketball when it comes to club play. 



Certainly, UEFA would face the same fate in soccer. At best, UEFA’s top competition would be at the level of today’s Europa Conference League in the event of a <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/european-super-league-is-here-its-called-the-premier-league-20230202-WST-418025.html">Super League</a>. At first, they would have a good selection of clubs to still choose from, if say, 18 clubs broke away. 



As we see in basketball, it’s not just a club competition that gets created. Rather, it is a new type of ‘federation.’ There is a simple promise of promotion to the Super League. Many clubs just outside of the elite group would clamor to start a new competition under the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/laliga-warns-of-impending-european-super-league-20221104-WST-406842.html">Super League</a> umbrella. That would leave UEFA with a poor selection of clubs for it’s own competitions. More importantly, this new competition would sap all the TV revenue away from UEFA. 



Basketball’s schedule is manageable. Teams play 3-4 games per week. Using that structure for soccer, where teams max out at two games per week, is a huge problem. 



<h5>The future of soccer</h5>



There are two options if soccer goes down this path of European basketball.



One, UEFA’s new structured Champions League format (starting in 2024-25 season) could be enough to appease the top clubs to stay with UEFA. Option two, is very much what we have seen in European basketball. A creation of de facto two ruling bodies.



The new Champions League format could buy UEFA a few more seasons. However, based on <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/latest-chelsea-transfers-not-at-fault-for-aimless-spending-20230114-WST-415145.html">spending of clubs</a> in the modern era as well as the ownership changes with little regard for tradition, European soccer may be unrecognizable in 10 years by today’s fans.

Is European soccer going the way of European basketball?

European basketball could be setting the blueprint for soccer as it continues to go down a path of super leagues.

MLB scheduled its Interleague dates to start right after the finals of the NBA.&nbsp; It is a great move for baseball because it rejuvenates&nbsp;its fans and transitions sports fans by refocusing their attention from basketball to baseball.
MLB has begun to master its technique for giving Interleague baseball the spotlight in the crowded sports calendar and has accentuated the rarity of matchups among teams by having in-state, intra-city rivals playing&nbsp;one week and the next week having World Series rematches, as well as other oddly encounters.&nbsp;
Drama&nbsp;has followed baseball’s good moves.&nbsp; Anyone watching&nbsp;Interleague play in the&nbsp;last two weeks will have noticed that there has been an unbelievable amount of highlights, history and walk-off wins.&nbsp; The steroid controversies, ticket prices&nbsp;and other problems with ego-driven players that has plagued baseball does not seem to be effecting the public’s will.&nbsp; Baseball is coming through this Summer in better position than originally thought by many critics and it seems to be weathering the financial storm.&nbsp;
It is also no secret that MLB is working all the angles of college baseball.&nbsp; The college World Series played out tremendously this year, as its format has begun to take&nbsp;on more tradition and more recognition with each year that passes.&nbsp;
Make no mistake about it, Soccer is competing with baseball for the American sports fan’s dollar.&nbsp; More than any other sport, baseball is a thorn in the side of the growth and popularity of U.S. pro Soccer because it is a constant scene stealer.&nbsp; This is a reality mostly because of the timing of the seasons they play.&nbsp;
But, there is no doubt&nbsp;to the fact that the&nbsp;Confederation Cup has&nbsp;boosted Soccer in the consciousness of the U.S. sports fan.&nbsp; It proves the U.S. is nearing equal footing with the best in the world.&nbsp;
What effects will&nbsp;possibly winning Confed Cup and winning the Gold Cup&nbsp;have on recruiting new fans for the struggling professional leagues, MLS, USL and NPSL?&nbsp; Will the boost from the Confed Cup and upcoming coverage of the Gold Cup help the U.S. pro leagues with attendance in general?&nbsp;
Attendance should rally not only due to improved international play, but also because of hotter temperatures and better weather across the country.&nbsp;
Of course, if there is no improvement in attendance or television ratings, no worries.&nbsp; Soccer purists have it figured&nbsp;to be only that&nbsp;‘the public needs to have patience’ as these professional leagues develop.&nbsp; After all, they are such young leagues.&nbsp;
Sometimes though, it seems as if&nbsp; U.S. pro Soccer can’t catch any breaks.&nbsp;&nbsp;On the heels of the success of the USMNT in the Confed Cup comes the unfortunate link of AEG, a huge part of MLS and its future, to the&nbsp;July-planned Michael Jackson concert series in England.&nbsp; What&nbsp;impact will&nbsp;Michael Jackson’s death have on AEG’s financials and what transferrence will be felt in MLS ?&nbsp;It appears certain there will be some sort of significant fallout, as AEG was&nbsp;way deep into its commitment with the King of Pop.

Who is the real target demographic of professional soccer in the U.S.? Is it Soccer Moms?&nbsp; Is it&nbsp;Soccer players?&nbsp; Is it Latino people?
Sure,&nbsp;Soccer Moms, Latinos and Soccer players&nbsp;make up some of the peripheral targets, but who makes up the core target?
One U.S. pro soccer fan thinks he’s the&nbsp;core target demo.&nbsp; He’s 41&nbsp;and 1/2 years old and had been a&nbsp;consistent fan of the big 3,&nbsp;football, basketball and baseball his whole life,&nbsp;until recently.&nbsp; As a new Soccer fan and not having been a soccer player for more&nbsp;than 20 years, he watches snippets of world soccer leagues, but&nbsp;does not go out of his way to find them.&nbsp; He doesn’t have Fox Soccer Channel to watch at home,&nbsp;though he wonders what life would be like with it.&nbsp; He doesn’t&nbsp;own a soccer scarf and has no plans to purchase one.&nbsp; &nbsp;
He supports Obama and likes to talk politics, but does not consider himself a Republican or Democrat.&nbsp; He doesn’t tweet yet, but has recently investigated Facebook as a possible hobby.&nbsp; He likes Spanish music a lot, but does not like watching American Idol or Dancing with the Stars.&nbsp; He has attended one women’s Roller Derby and one Lucha Libre and only watches short stints of MMA, but he is ready to watch American Soccer every night of the week.
He only glances briefly at NASCAR, but loved Talladega Nights with Will Ferrell.&nbsp; He wants to know a little more about Lacrosse and Cricket, but not too much.&nbsp; He likes to watch and play Tennis a lot, but only can take small doses of watching or playing golf.&nbsp; He likes to spend time with his wife and kid and wishes he had season tickets for a professional soccer team in his area.

He refuses to succumb to the word ‘pitch’ to replace the word ‘field’ and still hasn’t seen ‘Bend it Like Beckham’, but he did really enjoy the documentary on the NASL Cosmos, even though he’s not old enough to remember&nbsp;too much about the league.&nbsp; He also refuses to succumb to the abbreviation FC or nicknames like Chivas and Real, which seem foreign and pretentious.&nbsp; He’s looking forward to an old name coming back, Rowdies.&nbsp; He gets confused by all the&nbsp;different cup competitions and would rather see a longer regular season of professional U.S. Soccer.
His socioecomoic status is middle class, but he relates well to all classes; middle, middle-upper, middle-lower, upper and lower.&nbsp; He lives in an apartment and his wife keeps pushing him to buy a house.&nbsp; His work fluctuates, which is another reason he needs a stable, semi-daily American Soccer league, so he can get away from all of his work problems.&nbsp;
Above all, he considers himself a U.S. sports fan, who&nbsp;deals daily with&nbsp;his disenchantment&nbsp;for baseball, football and basketball.&nbsp; He&nbsp;looks forward to the day he can&nbsp;go to a franchise restaurant where the volume is up on a U.S. pro Soccer league match like it sometimes is on the big 3.

A purely American&nbsp;soccer league&nbsp;must take the step of changing the goal post dimensions.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As it is now, posts are at a height of 8 feet.&nbsp; An American league should make the bold move of moving the height of the crossbar higher.&nbsp; The crossbar needs to be adjusted by the length of 2 soccer balls to make the new&nbsp;height 8 feet + 2 balls.&nbsp;
At first glance, this adjustment in the goalpost appears to be only for offensive purposes.&nbsp; But, for every goal scored under these new conditions, there will also be one great save made by the goalkeeper.&nbsp;
An American soccer league must take into consideration that sports fans will not settle for an average score of 2.5 goals per game.&nbsp; It is all about offense.&nbsp; Americans are looking for at least double or triple the amount of goals that are being scored now.&nbsp; The ideal average score to attract sports fans to soccer in the U.S. would be 4-3.&nbsp;
Making the sport mainstream should always be priority, unless soccer is only looking to fill a niche, and is satisfied being a peripheral sport in the U.S.&nbsp; Raising the goalposts will create more drama, entertainment and the unexpected.&nbsp; By having the posts&nbsp;a little higher, players can aim a little higher.&nbsp;
Common sense dictates that there would be 10 times the amount of richochets than there&nbsp;are presently.&nbsp; Goalkeepers, averaging 6 foot 3 inches, are now able to get to almost every ball level with&nbsp;the crossbar.&nbsp; But raising the crossbar would mean that they would not be able to get to every ball level&nbsp;with the crossbar.&nbsp;&nbsp;
These ricochets&nbsp;from the goalposts back onto the playing field will delight the fans.&nbsp; Fans tend to always ooh and ahh when balls hit the posts.&nbsp; With the ricochets, come more saves, more surpise and more pace.&nbsp;
Recently,&nbsp;a still living legend, the Wizard of Westwood, John Wooden, winner of 10 NCAA basketball championships with UCLA, said that basketball should raise the rims from their present height of 10 feet.&nbsp; This declaration by the most recognizable teacher of the game is an admission that the game as it is now, according to Wooden, can be better.&nbsp; By raising the rim, players will have to be more creative with their shots, and thus, will rely less on dunks and put-ins.&nbsp; Basketball has lost a good deal&nbsp;of strategic play because of the ease of the layup.
Sports must evolve with the times.&nbsp; Players are taller and more athletic than players from the past.&nbsp; Dimensions&nbsp;from the playing field should progress and change according to what is best for sports fans to enjoy.&nbsp;
Regardless of the goalie’s position and distance from the goal, few scores are made that actually travel over the extended arm of a goalie who is in a standing position.&nbsp; It is time for American pro soccer&nbsp;to take its shot.&nbsp; Increase the size of the goal and see how many more&nbsp;attempts on goal there will be and see how much more exciting the game can be.

In order for Soccer to find the success it seeks in the U.S., it must make changes to the traditional rules without changing the integrity of the sport.&nbsp; Soccer can be that viable alternative for sports fans in the U.S. if it plays with American rules and also&nbsp;promotes&nbsp;the game to fit U.S. sports fans expectations, not&nbsp;the expectations of soccer enthusiasts.
The game of Soccer, like all other American spectator sports, must be tinkered with from time to time in order to maintain its entertainment value for the newest generation.&nbsp; But, the sport must not be altered significantly to where it is not recognized as Soccer.&nbsp; The integity of the sport must be kept intact (10 on 10 where no one touches the ball with their hands and one Goalkeeper for each side).
In sport, it is common for rules to vary from country to country.&nbsp; FIBA, the International Federation of Basketball plays its games under its rules, including a trapezoid key (paint).&nbsp; The U.S. adheres to these rules during international play and reverts back to its own rules for play in the NBA.
All&nbsp;strategies&nbsp;for delivering the product must adjust&nbsp;to the spectatorship landscape of the U.S. sports fans.&nbsp; If done with an American flavor,&nbsp;soccer can be an enduring spectator sport in the&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp; It has the ability to provide unique drama, escape and entertainment.&nbsp; It is definitely possible to raise the American consciousness for the appreciation of Soccer and it can become the 4th most dominating spectator sport in America.&nbsp;
Soccer needs to be serious, competitive, fun, and&nbsp;unapologetically American.&nbsp; The rules changes and marketing schemes must take responsibility in perfecting the art in the sport.&nbsp; They must make sure that the skill involved in the sport is showcased and that every match is played with contemporary sports drama and theatre.&nbsp; Action, tension during the contests and common sense in the rules must take precedence so that every game has the potential to rise to the occasion and be an unforgettable sporting spectacle.
There is a lot that must be done for American soccer to succeed.&nbsp; Sports fans in the U.S. expect more from their spectator sports.&nbsp; They are different than sports fans from other parts of the world.&nbsp; They are more sophisticated and they have been spoiled.&nbsp; The greatest moments in the recent history of sports have occurred in American sports or with American athletes.
The&nbsp;sport has been built-up significantly over time at the youth level and upwards through high-school and college levels.&nbsp; But, in order for professional soccer in the U.S. to derive the most amount of fan support possible, the marketing must become event-driven and reach&nbsp;the diehard sports fans.
Soccer can become a fabric of the American sports fans environment just as football,&nbsp;basketball, and&nbsp;baseball have consistently achieved from year to year.&nbsp;&nbsp;Soccer must think&nbsp;progressive in their rules amendments and consider what makes 4th down, the 3 and 2 count and the last-second shot so appealing to sports fans.
