Tottenham are reportedly negotiating to sell a minority stake in a deal that could value the club at an impressive $4.8 billion. 



This move is part of a strategic effort by Chairman Daniel Levy and the club’s majority owners, <a href="https://www.thespurs.news/club/owners/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ENIC Group</a> (ENIC). They want to attract fresh investment for various ambitious projects and bolster their financial standing.



<a href="https://www.thetimes.com/business-money/companies/article/tottenham-seek-375bn-valuation-in-stake-sale-676gtshb9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Times</a> says <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/tottenham-up-for-sale-daniel-levy-reveals-surprising-stance-20230921-WST-457819.html">Daniel Levy</a> is looking for an investment that values the club between $4.5 billion and $4.8 billion, including debt. 



The primary motivation behind this move is to raise capital for new player acquisitions. They also aim to develop the women’s team academy further and construct a 30-storey hotel adjacent to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.



ENIC, which controls 86.6% of <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/tottenham-tv-schedule/">Tottenham</a>, is not seeking a full takeover. Instead, the plan is to sell around 10% of the club. Rothschild bankers advise the club, but the details of the agreement are still up in the air.



Among the interested parties is Amanda Staveley, known for her involvement in the Saudi Arabia-led takeover of Newcastle. Staveley’s fund, PCP Capital Partners, has raised approximately $642 million for club deals over the years. 



Additionally, American investors have shown interest in purchasing a stake in Tottenham.

<h2>Potential changes in ownership structure</h2>



The deal to sell a minority stake could pave the way for Joe Lewis and his family to sever their ties with the club. 



Lewis acquired a controlling stake in Tottenham from Lord (Alan) Sugar in 2001 but relinquished his controlling position in October 2022, transferring his 70.1% stake to Enic amid an investigation for insider trading in the United States. 



Daniel Levy, who is leading the search for new investors, owns the remaining 29.9% of Enic.



Tottenham also has around 30,000 smaller shareholders, including Goldman Sachs banker Michael Sherwood. The new investment would support the club’s development projects and could enhance its competitive edge in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a>.



Spurs’ valuation has been a topic of significant interest and controversy. 



Daniel Levy reportedly valued the club at $4.5 billion in 2021; a figure that drew skepticism from industry experts at the time. 



In 2019, current Chelsea owner Todd Boehly led a consortium in advanced talks to acquire them for almost $3 billion. Nonetheless, the negotiations ultimately fell through.



Los Angeles Media Fund Global Ventures offered $3.9 billion to purchase the club in 2022, but ENIC rejected the offer. 



Despite matching the owners’ valuation, the bid was declined; the club was reportedly not interested in being listed on the stock exchange.



<h2>Comparative valuations</h2>



If Tottenham’s valuation reaches $4.8 billion, it would still place the club below <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/chelsea-tv-schedule">Chelsea</a>; a consortium led by <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/vieira-let-go-by-todd-bohely-after-criticism-of-strasbourg-project/">Todd Boehly</a> purchased the Blues for $5.4 billion in 2022. 



Earlier this year, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/man-united-academy-coaches-left-shocked-and-angry-amid-cuts/">Sir Jim Ratcliffe</a> acquired a 25% stake in <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-united-tv-schedule">Manchester United</a> for $1.3 billion; further highlighting the competitive landscape of Premier League club valuations.



Enic, led by Joe Lewis, has owned Tottenham since 2001, making Daniel Levy the longest-serving chairman in the Premier League. Levy’s family holds 29.4% of Enic’s share capital, and his tenure has been marked by significant development both on and off the pitch. 



The club’s state-of-the-art stadium and training facilities are testaments to the investments made under Enic’s ownership.

The state of affairs at Everton has seemed to reach a new low following their<a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/everton-lose-again-as-fans-demand-change-20230114-WST-415506.html"> 2-1 loss at home</a> against Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday evening.



Prior to the game, the club’s board of directors were advised to stay away from Goodison Park as what the club described as ‘a real and credible threat to safety and security’.



There was a sit in demonstration against the board by thousands of Everton fans who demanded owner Farhad Moshiri to make changes at the club including both the board and executive levels. 



<h5>Moshiri rejects fan demands</h5>



Moshiri however dismissed the demands leading to widespread resignation of Fan advisory board.



On the pitch too, things couldn’t have gone worse as Frank Lampard’s terrible side went on to lose the game after taking the lead. The Toffees currently sit 19th in the standings having lost 4 of their last 5 league games.



<h5>Role of Usmanov unclear</h5>



The <a href="https:\/\/www.theguardian.com/football/2023/jan/15/questions-mount-over-alisher-usmanovs-links-with-everton-fc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Guardian</a> have now reported that several football managers have raised questions over the ownership of the club. 



It is claimed that several of them were interviewed for the managerial post in the presence of Uzbek Oligarch Alisher Usmanov who had earlier been sanctioned. 



The report comes as a major surprise after the club had publicly announced in <a href="https:\/\/www.theguardian.com/football/2022/mar/02/everton-suspend-ties-with-russian-companies-linked-to-alisher-usmanov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">March of 2022</a> that they had suspended all sponsorship deals with Russian companies that were backed by Usmanov.



It is believed that Usmanov attended several meetings alongside Moshiri since his initial acquisition of the club in 2016 until his assets were frozen after Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Usmanov was swiftly sanctioned falling under the category of ‘Putin’s associates’.



Managers who were interviewed for the job were however left with a feeling that Usmanov partly owns the club or has stakes in some shape or form. 



Moshiri however has consistently denied the claims saying that he is the owner of the club.



Usmanov’s spokesperson however hasn’t denied the Uzbek’s presence in the managerial interviews saying, “Mr Moshiri did at times turn to Mr Usmanov for advice given the latter’s significant experience in football, but he [Moshiri] made all the decisions.” Moshiri’s spokesperson however denied the claims saying, “Mr Usmanov has never interviewed or been present during an interview.”



The report from Guardian also states that several managers have claimed that Usmanov might partly own the club while one specific manager mentioned that the oligarch had visited him in Germany regarding the job. Lampard had also earlier <a href="https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/frank-lampard-alisher-usmanov-breaking-23268037" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> that Usmanov was in a Zoom call during his interview.



It remains to be seen what the developments would be surrounding the club with these fresh allegations but it looks like nothing’s going right at Everton both on and off the pitch.
