Dubai (AFP) – South Korea beat Syria 2-0 in Dubai on Tuesday to reach their 10th straight World Cup finals.
The Koreans, who have appeared at every finals since Mexico in 1986 and came fourth when they co-hosted the tournament in 2002, go to Qatar alongside Iran, who had already clinched a place from Asia’s preliminary Group A.
Even without injured English Premier League star Son Heung-Min, Paulo Bento’s side dominated the game but they did came close to scoring until forward Cho Gue Sung’s shot from close in went wide in the 43rd minute.
Two minutes later, Cho, who got the winning goal in the last match against Lebanon, headed the ball against the post.
Kim Jin-Su opened the scoring with a 54th minute shot that gave Syrian goalkeeper Ibrahim Alma no chance.&nbsp;
Kwon Chang-Hoon shot from outside the penalty area to double the score in the 74th minute.
Iran beat Iraq last Thursday to reach their third straight finals.
The third-place teams from Asia’s two qualifying groups will clash in a playoff for the right to play a South American team for a place in Qatar.
The first World Cup finals in an Arab country will start in Qatar on November 21.
South Korea have a history of World Cup upsets. They knocked out Italy to reach the semi-finals in 2002 and at the last World Cup in Russia beat Germany 2-0 but failed to reach the knockout rounds.&nbsp;

Seoul (AFP) – Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors’ bid for a second AFC Champions League title faces a major threat this week when they come up against free-scoring domestic rivals FC Seoul and their record-seeking striker, Adriano.
The Motors tore apart Sven-Goran Eriksson’s Shanghai SIPG 5-0 in the second leg of their quarter-final as they purred towards a second Asian title after lifting the trophy in 2006.
The green-clad South Korean side are the unbeaten runaway K-League leaders by 14 points and they have impeccable pedigree in the Champions League, contesting two finals and only once failing to reach the knock-out stages.
But they will be wary of FC Seoul, whose Brazilian marksman Adriano is the tournament’s top-scorer with 12 goals — one away from equalling the single-season record of 13.
Adriano&nbsp;smashed four past Buriram United and got a hat-trick against Sanfrecce Hiroshima as he lit up the group stages to put the 2013 record set by Guangzhou Evergrande’s Muriqui under threat.
He has been used sparingly by coach Hwang Sun-Hong in the competition’s later stages but he is a dangerous impact sub, as shown when he scored off the bench in the first leg of the quarter-final against Shandong Luneng.
Before Jeonbuk host Seoul in the first leg on Wednesday, 2003 champions Al Ain contest Tuesday’s West Asian clash at home against surprise contenders El Jaish.
Qatar’s El Jaish lost the first leg of their quarter-final 3-0 to Al Nasr, but the result was reversed when the UAE side was found to have fielded an ineligible player.
A 1-0 win in the second leg was enough to take El Jaish through to their first ever semi-final in the Asian club competition.
UAE’s Al Ain historically have the better record, winning the Champions League in 2003 and losing in the final two years later, but El Jaish beat them twice in the pool stages this year to finish top of Group D.

Seoul (AFP) – South Korean tycoon Chung Mong-Joon on Wednesday said he would use every available avenue to fight a FIFA ban imposed over his lobbying for Seoul’s bid to host the 2022 World Cup.
The former FIFA presidential candidate said he would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport if necessary to overturn the ban after FIFA’s Appeal Committee partially confirmed an earlier suspension and reduced his ban from six years to five.
“Correcting the wrongful decision by FIFA’s Ethics and Appeals Committees is not only a way to restore my honour, but also my own contribution to the reform of FIFA,” Chung said in a statement.
“As such, I shall exhaust all legal options available to me including an appeal to (the) Court of Arbitration for Sports”, he said.
“What I find most disappointing is the fact that FIFA has not really changed.&nbsp;Had it fully acknowledged that FIFA’s way of doing things were wrong, such a decision would never have been rendered.”&nbsp;
Chung, a former FIFA vice president, was found to have contravened rules while lobbying for South Korea’s bid to host the 2022 World Cup, which was awarded to Qatar in 2010.
Chung, the billionaire scion of the Hyundai family, had been a candidate to replace former FIFA chief Sepp Blatter but ultimately withdrew from the race, which saw ex-UEFA secretary general Gianni Infantino elected.&nbsp;
Chung accused FIFA judges of “sabotage” after his suspension came into force in October last year.
The appeals committee said the evidence against Chung was “not sufficient” to support the six-year-ban and reduced his fine from 100,000 to 50,000 Swiss francs.
