American streaming service <a href="https://paramountplus.qflm.net/c/330866/1007330/3065" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Paramount+</a> will stream the upcoming 2022 Ballon d’Or ceremony live as it happens.&nbsp;&nbsp;The star-studded event will take place on Monday, October 17th in Paris.



Hosted by former Chelsea great Didier Drogba and television presenter Sandy Heribert, the ceremony begins at 2:30PM (ET).&nbsp;&nbsp;Along with airing the entire event, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/channels/paramount-plus-soccer-schedule/">Paramount+</a> will also stream an hour-long press conference at the conclusion of the ceremony.



<h2>Background on Ballon d’Or ceremony</h2>



The Ballon d’Or is an annual award presented to the top performer in the sport of that particular year. First originating in 1956, the trophy is presented by <a href="https://www.francefootball.fr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">France Football</a>, a weekly soccer magazine consisting of sporting news from all over the planet.



Argentina international Lionel Messi has won the most Ballon d’Or awards in the history of the prestigious event.&nbsp;&nbsp;Along with his record seven wins, the now PSG player has also finished second in the voting five times, and third once.



Cristiano Ronaldo (5), Michel Platini (3), Johan Cruyff (3), and Marco van Basten (3) round out the top five Ballon d’Or winners of all time.



While Messi may have the most Golden Ball trophies of all time, he is not currently in contention to bring home his eighth triumph.&nbsp;&nbsp;This will be the first time since 2005 that Messi was not among the nominations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema is the current favorite to win the award this year.&nbsp;&nbsp;However, there are 30 total players that can collect the Ballon d’Or.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some other notable 2022 nominees include: Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe, Robert Lewandowski, Kevin De Bruyne, and Christopher Nkunku.



The men’s Ballon d’Or trophy is not, however, the only award handed out at the ceremony.&nbsp;&nbsp;There is also a women’s Ballon d’Or, Kopa Trophy (best young player), Socrates Award (player involved in social/charitable work), Gerd Muller Trophy (top scorer), Yachine Trophy (best goalkeeper), and an award for the best club of the year.

Paris (AFP) – The Ballon d’Or, awarded to the world’s best male and female footballer, is revamping its format from next season, organisers France Football magazine said on Friday.
The award willl now be based on performances across a whole football season, rather than a calendar year, and the jury that selects the winner will be reduced to around 100 journalists rather than the current 170.
The women’s award will have a jury of 50.
“It’s an opportunity to give it a new impetus,” France Football’s chief editor Pascal Ferre said at a presentation of the new format.
“Before we were judging based on two half seasons. This will be clearer.”
The next Ballon d’Or awards will be handed out in September or October 2022 and will be based on the season that ended in July with the women’s Euro 2022.
With the World Cup finals in Qatar not taking place until November and December this year, the stars of that event will have to wait until the 2023 awards.
The changes are also designed to prevent the Ballon d’Or becoming the equivalent of lifestyle awards.
This is in response to the criticism of the 2021 award given to Lionel Messi for the seventh time, following his transfer to French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
Many observers believed Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski deserved to win — the Pole did win the equivalent category in the 2022 Best FIFA awards.
Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas won both the Ballon d’Or and the Best Fifa award for women’s player.
In another change, former Chelsea forward Didier Drogba is joining the committee that picks nominees.
The criteria will also be clarified with “individual performances” given more prominence than factors such as the trophies won by a player’s team or an individual’s “sense of fairplay”.
“It is about avoiding ambiguities, being clear and coherent — the Ballon d’Or is an individual award based on individual performances,” Ferre said.

Paris (AFP) – The Ballon d’Or deal between France Football and FIFA has ended, the French publication and football’s governing body announced on Friday.
The coveted award will from now on return to its original home after France Football’s agreement with FIFA finished.
The next recipient will be determined by a vote of journalists – players (national team captains) and managers will no longer have a say.
“The contractual agreement between FIFA and France Football expired in January. We told France Football in early August that the contract would not be renewed,” the game’s governing body declared.
Argentina and Barcelona star Lionel Messi won the award for a record fifth time in 2015.
FIFA plans to continue its annual best player award to male and female players.
FIFA and France Football teamed up in 2010 since when only two players have been nominated for the title known as the FIFA Ballon d’Or – Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The first Ballon d’Or was won by Stanley Matthews, at the time with Blackpool, who beat Alfredo Di Stefano for the inaugural title in 1956.
Up to 1994 only European players were eligible.
The first non-European to win it was the following year, AC Milan’s Liberian star George Weah.
From 2007 it honoured the world’s best player, with FIFA under former president Sepp Blatter entering into a deal with France Football in 2010 to merge the Ballon d’Or with FIFA’s best world player honour.
