Actor Pitt arrives for the world premiere of the film

As transfer markets go, summer 2015 has not disappointed. We’ve had real mega-deals, dramatic screw-ups, and plenty of records broken; exactly what us fans feed on! The stats do make for interesting reading, with the Premier League coming out way on top in terms of money spent, switching up on the norm of selling players abroad for inordinate amounts of dosh.

This was a summer where the Manchester gold was called upon in its fullest, and not just from the City. Real Madrid and Barcelona have been known to shoot out the blocks and throw around more money than David Bentley in an all-inclusive casino; but they really have been quite conservative, considering.

The big boys from Serie A have been recruiting, but, like with La Liga this summer, there were a couple of surprisingly big spenders outside the normal hierarchy.

Check out the full transfer stats from the top three European leagues this summer:

Premier League Total Spend, Summer 2015 – £870m

Biggest Spenders:

Manchester City: £154m
Manchester United: £115m
Liverpool: £88m
Chelsea: £72m
Tottenham: £53m

Largest Transfer Fees:

Kevin De Bruyne to Manchester City: £55m
Raheem Sterling to Manchester City: £49m
Anthony Martial to Manchester United: £36m
Christian Benteke to Liverpool: £32.5m
Nicolas Otamendi to Manchester City: £32m

Former Chelsea man Kevin De Bruyne’s £55m move to Manchester City was the biggest summer transfer deal across all European divisions. More than double the price of the biggest signing from La Liga and Serie A, De Bruyne and his new teammate Raheem Sterling cost City a whopping £104m this summer. If they can click with striker Sergio Aguero, however, who’ll be questioning that outlay?

French attacker Anthony Martial’s deadline day move from Monaco to United raised some eyebrows, with the 19 year old now the most expensive teenager in football history. Liverpool, meanwhile, have also been big spenders, bringing in six first team players, spending the third most in the league.

Serie A Total Spend, Summer 2015 – £450m

Biggest Spenders:

Juventus: £89m
AC Milan: £67m
Inter Milan: £56m
Napoli: £23m
Torino: £19m

Largest Transfer Fees:

Geoffrey Kondogbia to Inter Milan: £22m
Carlos Bacca to AC Milan: £21m
Alex Sandro to AC Milan: £19m
Alessio Romagnoli to AC Milan: £18m

The Italian big boys have been busy. Three big signings from each of the traditional big three, with Juve’s capture of the promising Dybala coming out on top in terms of price.

With The Old Lady reaching the final of last year’s Champions League, there could be the chance of something of a resurgence for the ‘graveyard’ league, as it is sometimes called.

The two Milan clubs are pushing hard for a return to the big time, with AC’s purchase of South American hitman Carlos Bacca sure to be popular with the fans, while Torino are the surprise inclusion in the top five spenders.

La Liga Total Spend, Summer 2015 – £400m

Biggest Spenders:

Atletico Madrid: £92m
Valencia: £83m
Real Madrid: £54m
Barcelona: £38m
Villarreal: £28m

Largest Transfer Fees:

Mateo Kovacic to Real Madrid: £25m
Jackson Martinez to Atletico Madrid: £24.8m
Arda Turan to Barcelona: £24.1m
Alvaro Negredo to Valencia: £23.8m
Danilo to Real Madrid: £23m

Yes, you read it right. Alvaro Negredo cost Valencia £23.8m from Man City, and that deal hits the top five in La Liga!

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid were surprisingly quiet this summer, with main rivals Atletico Madrid splashing the cash in their attempts to keep pace. Jackson Martinez, Yannick Ferreira Carrasco and Luciano Vietto coming in to replace the departing Arda Turan and Mario Mandzukic.

Who do you think was the best signing of the transfer window, across the three European leagues?
