Premier League Saturday: Jan. 14, 2012

It's been a few weeks since we've had an open thread, but this weekend's Premier League fixtures offers plenty of opportunities for some of the underdogs in the league to register an upset. With no early and no late kick-offs today, you have seven Premier League matches kicking off at 3pm GMT/10am ET. Potential upsets […]

English Football Cards From Early Nineties (Pro Set): Photos

In the late 1980's, football stickers were still the rage so when Pro Set launched a collectible card collection in England and the United States in the early 1990's, they definitely turned heads. The quality of the photos were spectacular when compared to the tiny stickers from Panini, and it wasn't any surprise that they […]

England Card Collection From 1998 World Cup: Photos

It's day four of cleaning out my garage (it's looking pretty tidy so far). Today I uncovered a pack of England cards that were issued by Upper Deck in 1998 under the title of "England: The England Card Collection." In the above picture, you'll see five of the six cards that were contained in a […]

Glen Johnson's Tackle Was Worse Than Vincent Kompany's: Animated GIF

Glen Johnson committed a two-footed lunge against Manchester City in Wednesday night's first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final. However, the tackle (see above animation), which was far worse than the one that Vincent Kompany committed against Nani this past Sunday, was unpunished by referee Lee Mason. The tackle by Liverpool's Glen Johnson is sure […]

Look At These English Football Clubs And Badges From 1962: Collector's Card Photos

On day three of cleaning out my garage, I found a pleasant surprise in a 1962 collection of 25 cards entitled "Football Clubs and Badges" from a company named Lamberts Of Norwich. The cards were included in packets of tea from Lamberts. Each card features an English club with the club's name, football kit, crest […]

If Tottenham Beats Everton Tonight, Can Spurs Go All The Way?

It may seem like a typical mid-week game, but Tottenham's match tonight against Everton is monumental. If Spurs win, they go joint second with Manchester United, and will be just three points away from Manchester City at the top of the table. A win for Harry Redknapp's side tonight and another slip-up by either of […]

1990 Panini Football Stickers: Photos

Day two of cleaning up my garage unearthed some more gems. This time it's "Football '90," which is a small stack of Panini stickers from the 1990-91 season. There are about 50-75 stickers in all, nowhere near the entire collection. But the first thing that jumped out at me is all of these long forgotten […]

How Much Is Your Cable Or Satellite Bill?

In the past few weeks, I've been reading several comments from readers who are complaining how expensive it is to watch soccer on television. Of course, it's all relative. Based on the quantity of games shown, it's probably the best bargain we've ever had. But it made me think. How much is each of us […]

Andrey Arshavin Couldn't Hit a Barn Door; Thierry Henry Shows Him How

It's only fitting that in a game where Arsenal monopolized the number of shots taken against Leeds United in Monday's FA Cup match that late substitute Thierry Henry would stride on to the pitch and show his fellow teammates how to slot the ball into the back of the net. Specifically I'm looking at you, […]

Why Kompany's Tackle On Nani Shows How The System Is Broken

Soccer has been one of the most important things for me almost my entire life, but if there is one thing I don't like about the sport, it's when questionable calls happen like the one on Sunday where Vincent Kompany got red carded for his challenge on Nani. The reason why I don't like instances […]

FA Cup Footballers From 1988-89 Featured In Match Magazine: Photo

While cleaning out my garage over the weekend, I came across an old box of football/soccer collectibles. I haven't peeked inside the box yet to see what's in there, but I thought I'd reach in and pick out the first thing that was near the top. And it just so happened to be a sheet […]

Paul Scholes Rejoins Manchester United; Red Devils Are Getting Desperate

Paul Scholes has come out of retirement to rejoin Manchester United until the end of the season, and will be on the bench today for the FA Cup third round match against Manchester City. No, it's not an April fools joke. The 37-year-old Paul Scholes will be rejoining the 38-year old Ryan Giggs and his […]

If England Doesn't Care About the FA Cup, Why Not Export Selected Matches Overseas?

This morning I was listening to BBC Five Live commentator Alan Green complaining about poor attendances in this weekend's FA Cup matches. The two examples he gave were the crowd of less than 15,000 for a west Midlands derby between Birmingham City and Wolves, and the fact that tickets were still available yesterday for Sunday's […]

What Happens to Christian Miles Now That Rob Stone Has Joined FOX Soccer?

Reading the press release about the arrival of Rob Stone at FOX Sports this week, you would have presumed that Christian Miles was a goner. Without mentioning Miles's name, the press release described how Stone would be hosting Goals On Sunday and FOX Soccer Match Day, both programs currently hosted by Miles, and even mentioned […]
