US National Team: Chronicling the downfall

In 1998 the United States finished dead last in the World Cup. But truthfully that World Cup showed itself better in France than the current US team has performed of late. Despite an inability to finish chances in Steve Sampson's odd 3-6-1 formation, the US only conceded five goals in the entire World Cup. Moreover […]

USA 0-3 Brazil: Bradley Makes (Negative) History

Bora Milutinovic couldn't do it. Steve Sampson couldn't do it. Bruce Arena couldn't do it. But Bob Bradley has accomplished it: consecutive games against Brazil where the US allowed three or more goals. Prior to the September 2007 friendly in Chicago the US had held Brazil to two or fewer goals in ten straight matchups, […]

Bob Bradley's Tactics: Inconsistent and Inexplicable (UPDATED WITH NEW CONTENT)

Bradley went from the empty bucket 4-4-2 against Honduras to a 4-5-1 with essentially three […]

MLS Talk Podcast #88: USA 1-3 Italy Postgame

The United States gave a heroic effort against Italy in South Africa but as has been typical of the US in big games, they fell short and serious questions about the tactics persist. USA 1-3 Italy: Some Positives but Same Old Story

Photo from Getty Images/FIFA.com Some quick points: I believe Rico Clark's sending off was justified. I've heard and seen since the red card arguments against it, but if you tackle from the side with your cleats out and get no part of the ball, that's a letter of the law for sending off. In fact […]

CONCACAF Champions League Thoughts

Let's take a quick break from the US National Team mania that's sweeping America (not really but those of us that retreat to our bubble of footy fans would think the whole nation is engrossed by the Confederations Cup and Jermaine Jones defection from Germany to the US) and look ahead to the CONCACAF Champions […]

Thoughts on Jermaine Jones and the USMNT

UEFA Photo Ives Galarcep confirmed this morning what I had read in the Euro papers early last night eastern time: that Jermaine Jones a disruptive but effective force for Schlake 04 in an otherwise disappointing few seasons for the Gelsenkirchen based club wants to play for the USA. Watching Schalke (thank you GOL TV and […]

Confederations Cup 2009: Why The US has a Realistic Shot versus Italy

As discussed yesterday on this site with our retrospective of the 1999 Confederations Cup run by the United States it's possible even realistic for a properly motivated American team to beat European sides outside of Europe.
