CONCACAF Gold Cup Matchday Two: MLS/USL Impact (UPDATED)

Matchday two is in the books from the CONCACAF Gold Cup Champions League. While the region is always improving, the three nations that have clinched passage to the knock out stages already were all semifinalists in 2007: Canada, Guadeloupe and the United States. Mexico's continued unsporting play took a radical and disturbing turn on Thursday […]

Zizou Visits Colorado

As we recover from the excitement (if you want to call it that) of the Mexico-Panama game and the disgraceful and surprising behavior of Javier Aguirre, we are happy to report that Aguirre wasn't the only former Madrid resident who was showcased this week on US soil. Zinedine Zidane was at the 12th annual Addidas […]

USA 2-0 HONDURAS: Santino's Redemption

Santino Quaranta has had a bumpy last several years. I'll assume all our readers are familiar with his trials and travails so I won't rehash them here. But tonight at his home stadium, Quaranta achieved redemption with his first international goal in his first call up in over three years. Honduras today fielded a bonafide […]

CONCACAF Gold Cup: MLS in the Spotlight

Whether it is players, stadiums or officials, the CONCACAF Gold Cup is truly a showcase for MLS. The league has placed the most players on this tournament spread among the 12 qualified nations and MLS players ( and MLS bound players) have made a huge impact already on the tournament. MLS players, Stuart Holden, Robbie […]

Gooch Signs With Milan: Reaction (Updated)

The impact of this signing cannot over emphasized. For years and years top European clubs have shown no interest in American field players. Most European oriented American fans (eurosnobs as they are often called) have laughed off any suggestion of an American field player playing for a top European side. Additionally, after past impressive performances […]

DeGuzman Signing Would be a Coup for TFC and MLS

I don't usually post speculation about transfers here but this particular signing would be massive on many levels. My feeling is that MLS exists to promote domestic talent, and Julian DeGuzman is the best attacking player from the US or Canada in Europe. DeGuzman's revelation that he is considering a move to TFC should inspire […]

Gold Cup Matchday One Review (MLS/USL Perspective)

The big story of the first weekend of Gold Cup action was probably the injury to Mexico's Carlos Vela (pictured above from CONCACAF.com). If Vela is out long term, El Tri's hopes to recapture the Gold Cup trophy could be seriously dented. Nicaragua playing their first ever major tournament match gave a good account of […]

MLS and the Gold Cup: Scheduling Conflicts Continue

With Major League Soccer's self proclaimed "Summer of Soccer" continuing it's worth noting that MLS has promised before the season to schedule smarter during internationals. I have previously stated that, while I would like the league to consistently break during FIFA blackout dates, I realize it is not necessarily practical and does not jive completely […]

Grenada 0-4 USA: July Fourth Masterpiece

Don't let the skeptics tell you Grenada is a poor opponent. This side qualified for the Gold Cup by beating World Cup 2006 and current Hexagonal participant Trinidad and Tobago. This is also a team that gave Costa Rica such a scare in the second round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying that Hernan Medford was […]

CONCACAF Gold Cup: Red Bulls Pacheco Leads El Salvador's Remarkable Turnaround

Alfredo Pacheco is flying the MLS banner high in CONCACAF these days. At a time when less high profile, national team players from the region play in MLS than arguably any time in the league's history (look back at the hexagonal and World Cup qualifying for the 1998 and 2002 World Cups for comparison) Pacheco, […]

CONCACAF Gold Cup: FSC Drops the Ball

As I discussed yesterday I love the Gold Cup. Perhaps the tournament needs to be moved back to February or made once every four years but I do support the event wholeheartedly. The United States is in CONCACAF and I have made an effort to understand the rest of CONCACAF as well as I understand […]

CONCACAF Gold Cup: Squad Exemption for the USA Worth Debating

CONCACAF 's oddities have struck once again. The Confederation that has done some odd things through the years (most notably the re-branding of the entity as the Football Confederation about ten years ago) has once again done something that seems from the perspective of someone who watches a lot of football, quite odd. The decision to […]

Podcast Audio

The last few podcasts have been exciting endeavors as MLS Talk aimed to and hopefully provided the most comprehensive coverage experience of the USMNT run in the Confederations Cup. However, the rushed nature of the post match shows led to poor quality control and I am sorry to admit that the audio quality of those […]
