An Open Window

In previous years the January transfer window didn't mean a whole lot for MLS. The league for all intents and purposes retreated from the international transfer market after the 2000 season, a year when MLS was extremely aggressive in bring top international talent from European leagues to MLS, and in most cases the purchases failed […]

American Soccer Show #4: Eurosnob Discussion

Those of you who tuned into the American Soccer Show this afternoon or morning depending on where you reside were probably entertained by the passionate conversation my co-host Dave Denholm and I had on the subject of Euro snobbery. We hear the term all time with reference for football fans here in the states, but […]

Fearless Predictions for 2008

The US National Team will rely on two, maybe three thirty somethings to move through the first group of CONCACAF qualification. (the names Frankie Hejduk, Eddie Lewis and Pablo Mastroeni come to mind) Major League Soccer will fail to sign a big name over the hill international, but will scout well and sign a few […]

Joey Barton: Saying my peace on the subject

Let me deviate from the American Soccer format of this blog for a moment to share my thoughts on Joey Barton's most recent brush with the law. I am as our listeners and readers are keenly aware, a Manchester City die in the wool supporter. I've been relegated with the club three times since I […]

Some New Year’s Thoughts

Reports out of Europe indicate that Luis Figo has signed a contract with AEG. This is interesting because unless I read MLS rules incorrectly the Galaxy cannot sign another designated player. That would mean Figo is headed to Houston and my understanding is that Dom Kinnear wasn't really entertaining the thought of a DP. Of […]

The 2007 season for MLS was its most visible on both the American sports scene and on the international football scene. Best of USL-1 2007

The continued constant realignment and tinkering with USL makes it difficult to keep track of USL-1 especially when so many former USL-1 teams are in USL-2 and expansion teams come and go as the California Victory did this season. In the upcoming seasons USL-1 is likely to expand to and may simply put teams where […]

Best and Worst of 2007: US National Team

2007 was an interesting year for the US National Team. A transition year to say the least, at times the US looked worse than any point since prior to hosting the 1994 World Cup. The American performances in the Gold Cup and Copa America were un-inspirational to say the least. Despite winning the Gold Cup […]

Christmas Time Thoughts

This is traditionally the busiest time of year in the English Football season with the Boxing Day matches on the horizon and the January transfer window about to open. But here in the United States we are consumed by meaningless college bowl games between sixth place finishers in their conference. Can you imagine if we […]

MLS Pursuing the Road Previously Traveled and Failed

1998 was an expansion year in MLS. Chicago and Miami entered the league and MLS sensing it needed to expand the pie of potential players in the league increased the number of foreign players allowed in the league from four to five and the results were less than pleasing. Perhaps it was a sign that […]
