Why the USMNT will never be as good as Brazil

After a historically poor World Cup qualifying campaign the US Men’s National Team is going through a bit of an identity crisis. Despite winning three consecutive hexes prior to 2018, amassing 20+ points in each campaign, the in-flux squad could only manage 12 points this go-around. Ask a pundit what went wrong and they’ll tell you that Klinsmann lost control of the locker room, the tactics were desultory, or that bad luck simply took center stage. The aforementioned are all valid reasons, however, the demise of the USMNT has much more far-reaching roots than an Omar Gonzalez own goal or ... Read more

USA vs. Ireland match preview: Young squad faces tougher challenge

So far, so good USMNT coach Dave Sarachan ran out a very youthful lineup and they impressed with a resounding 3-0 over an overmatched Bolivia side. But now the test gets more difficult. A home game against an understrength side that didn’t qualify for the World Cup is one thing. A road game against a team that made it to the Round of 16 at Euro 2016 is quite another. The opponent: Ireland. The display that the young players put on against Bolivia was quite impressive. Three players scored their first international goal: Walker Zimmerman, Josh Sargent and Tim Weah. ... Read more

USA vs Bolivia preview: Several USMNT rookies set to win first caps

Looking at this roster, it features seven players who have never been capped before: Alex ... Read more

Klinsmann’s goalkeeper son named to US under-20 team

Chicago (AFP) – Jonathan Klinsmann, the son of fired US national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann, has been called into the American squad for the North American regional under-20 championship tournament. The younger Klinsmann, a goalkeeper for the University of California, was among five college players in the lineup, which also included defender Marlon Fossey and midfielder Luca de la Torre from English Championship side Fulham. It’s a situation reminiscent of when the elder Klinsmann took over the American squad in 2011 after the firing of coach Bob Bradley with Bradley’s son Michael serving as one of the midfielders in his ... It will be the first qualifier in this stint as coach for Arena, 65, who guided the Americans to the 2002 World Cup quarter-finals and in the 2006 World Cup, where they made ... Read more

Klinsmann directly responsible for USA defeat to Mexico in Hex opener

Photo credit: Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports Dos A Cero is a thing of the past. For the first time in fifteen years, the United States lost a World Cup qualifier on home soil – falling on Friday night against Mexico by a score of two goals to one. In this most meaningful Hexagonal opener, the mystique of Columbus fell apart for the USMNT – done in by another dose of aggressively incompetent coaching, and maybe a little bit of karma. Jurgen Klinsmann refused to be outdone. He lined the US up in a 3-5-2 formation in which it had never ... Read more
