Rio de Janeiro (AFP) – The son of Brazilian football legend Pele was ordered released on Wednesday pending an appeal against his conviction and 13-year sentence for laundering drug-trafficking money. Edson “Edinho” Cholbi do Nascimento, 46, had turned himself in last Friday, a day after a judge reconfirmed his conviction handed down in 2014 but cut his prison term from the original 33 years. Sao Paulo (AFP) – The son of football legend Pele turned himself in late Friday after being ordered by a Brazilian court to begin serving a nearly 13-year prison sentence for money laundering and drug trafficking. Pele leads football tributes to plane crash victims

Rio de Janeiro (AFP) – Brazil football legend Pele and Argentines Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi led numerous sporting tributes Tuesday to the Brazilian footballers killed in a plane crash in Colombia. Players of the Chapecoense Real team were among 81 people on board the doomed flight that crashed into mountains in northwestern Colombia. “Brazilian football is in mourning. It is such a tragic loss,” Pele, 76, wrote on Twitter. “My sincere condolences to the families of the deceased. Sao Paulo (AFP) – Brazil football legend Pele said Tuesday he will try to take part in the Olympics closing ceremony, after poor health stopped him from attending the opening gale. “I am continuing my physiotherapy and focused on joining you for the closing festivities on August 21. Sao Paulo (AFP) – Brazil football legend Pele wants to light the Rio Olympic flame at the opening ceremony on Friday, but poor health may prevent him from accepting the honor, his spokesman said Thursday. Sao Paulo (AFP) – Brazil football legend Pele is getting married Tuesday for the third time, tying the knot with his girlfriend of six years Marcia Cibele Aoki. Pele, 75, told O Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper that this time, he has found “love forever.” Pele and Aoki met in New York in the 1980s but only started seeing each other in 2010, when they crossed paths in an elevator in Sao Paulo.
